Wolves defender set for England call up

Wolves have had some outstanding individual performers that have made up for injury issues in the team, with a particular young defender making an impact this season.

What’s the word?

Max Kilman has taken to the Wolves team like a duck in water, with impressive performances throughout his game time in Lage’s side this season.

His most notable performance came during the game against Everton where the defender played in a back three alongside Conor Coady and Romain Saiss, where he looked more than comfortable defending against Demarai Gray and Richarlison.

The 24-year-old not only flourished defensively, winning eight out of ten duels vs the Toffees but managed to find the back of the net scoring his second career goal in the game.

Now, he has reportedly caught the eye of England Manager, Gareth Southgate, and Wolves reporter, Tim Spiers, has weighed in on Twitter regarding the rumour;

“Maximilian Kilman’s performances this season have put him on England’s radar.”

“The defender was called up by Ukraine earlier this year but because he’s played competitive futsal for England he couldn’t switch nations.”

The Englishman was hailed “outstanding” by his club captain and teammate, Conor Coady, after his performance against Fulham last season, highlighting why he should be in the frame for international acclaim heading into 2022.

“I thought he was outstanding, but I would expect nothing else from him. He’s brilliant to have around and is a brilliant professional – he listens to the manager, he learns off the lads who’ve been playing there the last couple of years and I think you could see that today,” the skipper said.

Wolves fans will surely be over the moon to hear that their player is on the radar of the England manager and could be included in further international fixtures, especially after the £14k-per-week defender has secured his future by signing a new contract with the club only a few weeks ago.

There is certainly room for the player to grow and develop in his role at Molineux, and he clearly has become an important part of the Wolves set up more recently playing as the right centre back in the back three.

If he continues to thrive in Lage’s side the sky is the limit for the young defender, who could find himself landing a spot on the plane to Qatar for the World Cup this time next year.

Celtic fans react amid Benkovic injury fears

[ad_pod ]

Celtic fans are in a panic over the fitness of Filip Benkovic.

When Brendan Rodgers mentioned a knock at Tuesday’s media conference it didn’t seem too concerning, with Jozo Simunovic and Kris Ajer linking up for the double header versus St Johnstone. A double header against Valencia next month is an entirely different prospect.

The loss of Dedryck Boyata and Benkovic has been a summer time bomb that Celtic fans have dreaded. But if it becomes reality now, there could be pressure on what remains of the transfer window to bring in a ready-to-play replacement.

The story of a season ending injury was first reported by The Scottish Sun and needless to say, it has created quite the reaction amongst Celtic supporters.

Rightly so – the 21-year-old has been in excellent form during his season-long loan from Leicester City, making 26 appearances for the Scottish champions in all competitions.

Here’s a quick look at how Hoops fans reacted to the news on Twitter…

Wolves backed to re-sign Matt Doherty

Former Wolves favourite Matt Doherty could re-sign for the club this month after a failed spell at Tottenham, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Doherty struggles at Spurs

The right-back traded Wanderers for Spurs back in 2020, seemingly seeing it as a step forward in his career, not to mention a fresh challenge.

Things haven’t panned out the way Doherty would have hoped in north London, however, and he has been limited to just 99 minutes of Premier League action this season.

The 29-year-old has been strongly linked with a return to Wolves in the January transfer window and a potential move has now been endorsed further.

The Latest: Journalist backs Wolves return

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke said he could see the move coming to fruition:

“I’m sure if Wolves were interested in him, it’s something he would seriously consider, to go back to the club because that’s where he made his name and enjoyed such a great time to win that move to Spurs in the first place.”

The Verdict: No-brainer for Wanderers

Doherty was a wonderful servant for Wolves over a long period of time, providing endless quality from full-back, and scoring 28 goals and registering 41 assists for the club. He was once described as ‘sensational’ by Jermaine Jenas.

For that reason, bringing him back to Molineux makes sense for all parties, allowing the 27-cap Republic of Ireland international more playing time, even though he will have to battle with the ever-improving Nelson Semedo for minutes.

Spurs will seemingly be happy to get rid of Doherty, given his squad status, so it is a move that appears to be a match made in heaven for all parties.

More trouble for Pawar over IPL bid

Sharad Pawar’s claims of not being involved in a bid for a Pune franchise in the IPL has been contradicted by information in a document describing the minutes of a board meeting of a company in which Pawar has a stake

Nagraj Gollapudi06-Jun-2010The former BCCI president Sharad Pawar and his family’s claims of not being involved in a bid for a Pune franchise in the IPL has been contradicted by information in a document describing the minutes of a board meeting of a company in which Pawar has a stake. The document reveals that on January 31, the Pune-based City Corporation had given Aniruddh Deshpande, its managing director, the permission to make a bid on “behalf” of the company during the auction in March. This calls into question Pawar’s earlier stance that Deshpande had made the bid entirely in his individual capacity and the board had given him permission to do so at the board’s meeting on March 17. Pawar, his wife Pratibha Pawar and his daughter Supriya Sule (a Member of Parliament) own a 16.22% stake in City Corporation. Pawar had said the reason he did not reveal his family’s stake in the company was because “there was no necessity felt to do so”. Sule had said that at the March 17 meeting it was resolved that the company will have nothing to do with the bid.But the minutes of the January 31 meeting, a copy of which is available with Cricinfo, states that Deshpande was asked to go ahead with the bid in the company’s name. According to the excerpts of the minutes of the January meeting the board “resolved that the company do and hereby authorize Mr Aniruddha Deshpande to represent the company in participating, bidding, winning & operating IPL franchisee from Pune in IPL-4 & onwards and to sign any agreement and other documents on behalf of the company in relation to participating in the bidding process of the IPL.”In his defence, Deshpande told the that the January 31 meeting was to “enable” him to exercise his bid in his personal capacity.Sule, meanwhile, continued to maintain that neither she nor her father had done anything wrong. “We don’t know anything about this because Mr Pawar and I don’t sit on the company’s Board. I don’t know why a mountain is being made out of a molehill,” she said. “How would we know? Have we signed any resolution? Do we sit on the Board? So how can we be held responsible for that?”Sule insisted that Deshpande was going to find a new set of shareholders if he had won the bid. “When Mr Deshpande submitted the bid to the BCCI, he had given a note that the shareholders may change as there will be a new consortium made if they win the bid and they lost the bid.”The BCCI is clearly unhappy with the situation. Reacting to Lalit Modi’s allegation on Friday that interim IPL chairman Chirayu Amin, too, was involved in the City Corporation bid, Shashank Manohar, the Indian board president, released a public statement, asking why Modi had not informed the board that Deshpande was bidding on his own.”Mr Modi has also made a statement that Mr Aniruddha Deshpande, MD City Corporation Ltd, had informed him that though the bid was submitted on behalf of City Corporation Ltd, it was in fact a personal bid on behalf of himself,” Manohar wrote. “Mr Modi, who claims to be above board in all matters, did not think this very cogent and important piece of information should be shared with Governing Council Members /Officials.”However, through his vehement attack against Modi, Manohar has also indirectly contradicted Pawar’s claim that the bid had not been made in City Corporation’s name. It is also understood that since Pawar is not part of any of the IPL franchises, he is clear of any wrongdoing as far as the BCCI are concerned.Pawar is a street-smart politician who has lost only one election in his entire life, but he will need all of his resourcefulness to get out of the embarrassing situation surrounding his links with a failed IPL bid.

United are four places and 15 points behind City in the Premier League and sunk to a disheartening home defeat by Fulham last week. They also are missing key players including Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire. However, the Catalan pointed out that United had previously been unbeaten in the new year and insisted he was expecting City's rivals to be a threat.

"They went to Luton and beat them, Wolves and beat them, Aston Villa to go and win a few weeks ago. They have the biggest quality," Guardiola told a press conference. "From one action they create something special with set pieces, transitions. Always have been demanding, when they play good, they will win. In 2024 they lost just one game, the consistency is there. [We will] prepare tactically, what we have to do to get three points."

New United minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has vowed to 'knock City and Liverpool off their perch' and targeted another league title within the next three years. Guardiola refused to comment on Ratcliffe's ambitions but acknowledged how tough it has been for United to reassert themselves at the top since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013. "Big clubs, you have to win. Not easy for United, an incredible period with Sir Alex. It's not easy," Guardiola added. "The big clubs used to have more patience, now there is a lot of pressure. I don't know the reason why, I'm not there."

Bangladesh, New Zealand clash with point to prove

ESPNcricinfo previews the Group D match between Bangladesh and New Zealand

The Preview by Mohammad Isam20-Sep-2012Match factsSeptember 21, 2012
Start time 1530 local (1000 GMT)An explosive start by Brendon McCullum could fire up New Zealand in the Group of Death•Associated PressBig PictureNew Zealand, considered underdogs for the tournament, will open their World Twenty20 campaign against a team that is also considered this year’s dark horses and actually hold a mental edge over them – Bangladesh crushed the visiting New Zealand side 4-0 in a one-day series, and though that was two years ago, the memory is fresh for the eight members of the current squad who rejoiced with the cricket-crazy nation at the time. But Bangladesh have to quickly realise New Zealand will be eager to take the lead in a group that also contains Pakistan.Ross Taylor will lead a side that has traditionally done well in multi-team tournaments, where they gel as a unit to reduce the gap between them and more talented or experienced sides. But this hasn’t been a very positive year for New Zealand. They did start the 2011-12 season with home and away wins over Zimbabwe on either side of a drawn Test series in Australia – which included win in Hobart – but it has been downhill ever since, losing at home to South Africa and away to West Indies in all three formats. There was a spark of hope coming into this tournament, as they recovered from a Test-series loss in India to take the rain-hit Twenty20 series 1-0 with a win in Chennai. Subsequently, in a way, this is a great stage for New Zealand – they get a global tournament in which to impress and make up for a poor year. The main issue for them is fitness: Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee and Rob Nicol went to Kandy a day later than the rest of the team, too sick to travel on the stipulated day. The trio suffered gastro problems in Colombo, but have since recovered and are likely to be fit for selection. Also, Kyle Mills, who was recovering from his collision with Brendon McCullum during the India T20, had a bout of laryngitis. He too is expected to be fit.Still, whether they are tested would entirely depend on how much fight Bangladesh can provide. Bangladesh, as opposed to New Zealand, come into this competition confident and well-prepared: after their rousing Asia Cup performance, they have devoted the Bangladesh off-season to exclusively playing Twenty20s.The recent history between the two sides, the talent within them and their strong reasons for needing to reach the Super Eights could produce a tremendous encounter.Form guideBangladesh LWLWW (completed matches, most recent first)
New Zealand WLLLL
Watch out forBrendon McCullum, the man who has played some of the most memorable Twenty20 innings since the format’s inception. It is not really a surprise that he is the leading run-scorer in Twenty20 internationals. His most recent chartbuster came from No. 3 against India and he could continue in that role.Bangladesh would expect Tamim Iqbal, their most destructive batsman, to be the fire-starter. Like McCullum, he can carve up an attack if things go to plan. But that’s where the similarities end. Tamim hasn’t fulfilled expectations in Twenty20 cricket, but the recent series in Europe and, especially, the Sri Lanka Premier League have helped him understand the format’s demands.Team newsFor once Bangladesh have a settled line-up in Twenty20 cricket. The modified top-order would mean persistence with Mohammad Ashraful as Tamim’s opening partner and Shakib Al Hasan at No. 3. Shakib’s promotion would leave the middle-order with the task of finishing games, with Mushfiqur Rahim leading the way, and Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah for company. Ziaur Rahman and Mashrafe Mortaza will provide the big-hitting down the order. The only change, mainly due to conditions in Pallekele that are not too conducive to spin bowling, could be that Abul Hasan’s pace is preferred to the left-arm spin of Elias Sunny. Jahurul Islam, Farhad Reza and Junaid Siddique will only get a look-in if there’s an injury.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Mohammad Ashraful, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 5 Nasir Hossain, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Ziaur Rahman, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Elias Sunny/Abul HasanNew Zealand possess some prominent T20 cricketers; the key for Taylor would be to put together a line-up that balances attack and defence. He would be mindful of keeping the Bangladesh top-order quiet – Nathan McCullum could take the new ball to counter left-hander Tamim, but the difficulty would be to pick between four specialist pace bowlers who offer something different. Southee, if he has recovered sufficiently, would be picked on form, but Doug Bracewell and Adam Milne have pace, while Mills has guile.New Zealand (probable) 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Brendon McCullum (wk), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Ross Taylor (capt), 6 Jacob Oram, 7 James Franklin, 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Tim Southee/Doug Bracewell, 11 Kyle Mills/Adam MilnePitch and conditionsThe batsmen would be happy to know that the Pallekele pitches offer a better run-rate than the other two venues at the World Twenty20 and New Zealand have some idea of this venue’s profligate nature: they racked up a 300-plus score against Pakistan in the World Cup here last year and won by 110 runs. The weather, however, could ruin the contest, as there is forecast of rain in the area at noon on Friday.Stats and trivia Bangladesh have played one-fourth of all their T20Is in July this year.New Zealand have been involved in three tied games so far, the most by any team.Quotes”If we had played some of our build-up matches against top teams, preparations would have been a little better. Still, with us playing together for quite some time now, I believe this is our best Twenty20 team.”
“It’s a very tough group and it’s going to be a tough game. We can’t take them for granted, they have got some world-class players in their side and we know that. We have respect for them and we can only control how we play.”

Postecoglou must unleash Moffatt tonight

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side head into Wednesday evening’s Scottish Premiership clash against Ross County in a fantastic run of form, remaining undefeated over their last 11 league outings.

However, following yet more casualties in the 1-0 win over Motherwell last weekend, the 56-year-old manager will more than likely have something of a selection migraine rather than the usual headache going into the fixture at Victoria Park.

Indeed, all of Kyogo Furuhashi, Albian Ajeti, Giorgos Giakoumakis, James Forrest, Mikey Johnston and Jota look as if they will be unavailable for selection against the Staggies, something that could well leave Postecoglou no other choice but to field a number of his younger talents on Wednesday night.

And, after highly impressing for Celtic B this season, in addition to being brought into first-team training this week, now would appear to be the perfect time for the Bhoys boss to finally unleash the Hoops’ 19-year-old sensation, Owen Moffat.

Postecoglou must unleash Moffatt

The left-winger has been in sensational form for Tommy McIntyre’s reserve team in the current campaign, topping the club’s scoring charts in the Scottish Lowland League with 11 goals to his name.

However, not only is the youngster quite clearly a prolific goalscorer, but he is also a scorer of great goals, with perhaps the pick of the bunch being his audacious lob in a 5-1 win over the University of Stirling earlier this season.

In the closing stages of the match in question, Moffatt plucks a high ball out of the air with a fantastic first touch, taking him away from an onrushing defender, before deftly chipping the ball over the opposition goalkeeper from a good 40 yards out.

Indeed, finishing very much appears to be a strong suit of the forward’s game, with Celtic captain Callum McGregor having previously commented on the teenager’s ability in front of goal.

The 28-year-old said of the young winger: “His attitude has been first-class. I remember watching him at the end of last season. Every day he would do finishing, and I remember thinking, ‘he’s got a finish on him’.”

As such, while the Premiership is undoubtedly a huge step up from the Lowland League, it would very much appear as if Moffatt is more than ready for his big chance on Wednesday evening.

Chelsea cannot offer Moscardo a potential loan move as well since they have used up all seven international loan spots. Hence PSG have now got a free shot to get their hands on the player, even though they joined the race pretty late.

Nigeria vs Ghana: Changes Eguavoen should make against the Black Stars

Which alterations could the Super Eagles boss make for Tuesday’s make or break World Cup qualifier?

GettyNigeria vs Ghana

Friday’s goalless encounter between these West African giants has set up a hugely-awaited decider in Abuja on Tuesday, with observers closer to finding out which nation will be in Qatar later this year.

Nigeria boss Augustine Eguavoen may have seemed somewhat pleased with the 0-0 result, even though he still hinted a win could have been claimed at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Having assessed Friday’s performance, GOAL suggests tweaks the trainer could make for the reverse fixture.

AdvertisementBackpagepixFrank Onyeka

While there would be a temptation to play Peter Etebo instead, the Watford midfielder’s lack of match sharpness means Eguavoen should opt for the Brentford man from the start.

Whether the trainer selects Onyeka from the off remains to be seen, yet there is unlikely to be another Innocent Bonke experiment owing to the defensive midfielder’s underwhelming showing and subsequent injury in Kumasi.

GettyMore minutes for Ademola Lookman

Having waited so long before introducing the Leicester City winger on Friday, Lookman has to start in the reverse fixture.

The RB Leipzig loanee not only offers his aggressive ball carrying and dribbling ability, but he backs that up with the all-important end product.

With Samuel Chukwueze a doubt for Tuesday, Lookman should be trusted from the off for his home debut.

Watford.Start Emmanuel Dennis

Kelechi Iheanacho may have fashioned Nigeria’s best chance of the night at the Baba Yara Stadium, but he offered little else for the remainder of the game.

Admittedly, it could be a risk playing Dennis and Victor Osimhen in tandem up front, so Eguavoen may alternatively choose to introduce the Watford man for Moses Simon from the start.
