Neymar wants to leave PSG – but Barcelona need bargain signings, not big-money distractions

The Brazil star reportedly covets a return to Catalunya after asking to be sold by the French champions, but the Blaugrana should steer clear

Another year, another rumour suggesting that Neymar will be leaving Paris Saint-Germain. The Brazilian star has hardly spent a summer in the French capital without being linked with a move away. This time, though, what appeared to once live in the realm of gossip columns and social-media speculation has become something more concrete. Neymar, according to , has told PSG that he wants out. And now, we are led to believe, he really means it.

Of course, the predictable links have cropped up. Chelsea have, depending on who you believe, both entered talks and ruled out the signing entirely. Numerous Saudi Pro League sides have also enquired. But the big name, perhaps the most likely contender for his services, is Barcelona.

And there's some romance to this one. Barcelona are his former home, the club where Neymar staked his claim to be one of the best in the world. He won seven trophies across four years in Catalunya, scored 105 goals, and finished third in Ballon d'Or voting twice. That he wants to go back, and Barca president Joan Laporta is interested in securing his services, is of little surprise.

But while Neymar wants to relive part of his footballing youth, the new, Xavi-led version of Barcelona has grown up. This is a wiser organisation now, one more financially prudent, a club that should avoid the Neymar saga — and has shown it has the smarts to do so.

(C)Getty ImagesNeymar, the megastar

It was, perhaps, Neymar's megastardom that drew him to Paris in the first place. The Brazilian wanted his own spotlight, a sole role in the centre of a club, without other big names snatching attention from him. Finally, he had the platform to go from the consensus third-best player in the world to the undisputed finest. That, coupled with the handsome, €36.8 million (£32m/$41m) salary, made the Parisians' offer relatively easy to accept.

What happened next is well-chronicled at this point. Neymar was swiftly joined in Paris by Kylian Mbappe, and the two embarked on a six-year tour of Champions League failures and limited domestic success. Other actors joined them along the journey — Lionel Messi, Achraf Hakimi and Sergio Ramos all had their go — but none of those additions yielded any results. And perhaps more importantly for Neymar, each one took a tiny slice of attention away from him. Gradually, PSG's star man, the centre of the nation-state-owned project, became a role player in a side defined by its glut of superstars.

And it's not like Neymar has helped himself, either. Here is a player who is already polarising for his embodiment of 'samba' football. Neymar elasticos past a defender, then falls over when he's hardly been touched. Neymar beats four opponents, then gets booked for reacting to a foul from one of them. Neymar tallies 30 goal contributions in every PSG season, but taints his image with off-field antics. There were the wild parties, the midnight McDonald's trips, the curious tendencies to be injured at the same point of every season.

These are all damaging things for a normal footballer. But for one of Neymar's style, standing, and stardom, they are damning. He is, by this point, an immensely talented but injury-prone player who is the wrong side of 30.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesBarcelona's past failures

These are the kinds of things that Barcelona have ignored in the past. Every time a big name crops up in transfer rumours around Europe, the Blaugrana are among the first to be linked. And too often they have coughed up. They panic-bought injury-prone and unproven Ousmane Dembele shortly after Neymar's departure, handing Borussia Dortmund €105m (£90m/$116m) for a 19-year-old who had only started 22 matches at the top level.

A few months later, they coveted Phillipe Coutinho. They paid up again, gifting Liverpool €160m (£142m/$176m) for a player who was quickly becoming surplus to requirements for Jurgen Klopp's men. And 18 months after that, when Antoine Griezmann was ready for a move away from Atletico Madrid, Barca met his €120m (£107m/$134m) release clause — despite there being no clear spot in the side for his inclusion.

Those three players, bought for a combined €385m (£339m/$426m), will have been sold for less than €100m once Dembele's protracted move to PSG goes through. Add in the fact that Barca only get half of Dembele's reported €50m (£43m/$54m) fee, and they will have lost over €300m (£260m/$330m) by outbidding everyone else for top European stars.

And that doesn't even include the near-misses. At various points, Barcelona have been linked with Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Joao Felix, while only after four years at the club, the €75 million spent on Frenkie de Jong is starting to look like a reasonable investment. There is a history here, a line of risky, often reckless decisions that have been made in the name of the club badge and perceived power, rather than on-field performance.

(C)Getty ImagesCurrent shortcomings

Those decisions, combined with questionable financial mismanagement in the boardroom and reckless contracts handed out to aging players, left Barca where they are now. Even so, they have already been in the market this summer for one megastar.

Much of the noise around Camp Nou for the last year has surrounded the promise of re-signing another former club legend. Barcelona, we are led to believe, tried everything to sign Messi. They mortgaged the future of their own club, ruined their own in-house and external media deals, and pushed back the registration of some of the world's best young players in order to secure the return of the Argentine. And at the end of it all, after public courtship from the manager, club president and some of the players, Barca's financial manoeuvres weren't enough.

The team that once relied on its financial might and marketing clout to compete for the best names in Europe couldn't even afford to bring in the best of them all — even on a wage far below his market value. The saga is emblematic of Barca's struggles. They are now forced to watch the best player to ever grace their club finish his career across the Atlantic.

There is little to suggest that things will be different with Neymar. Although he reportedly wants to return to his former club, there is little indication that he is willing to make financial sacrifices to do so. This year, at PSG, he earned €36m (£31m/$40m). Barcelona likely cannot come close to that. Concessions will perhaps be made, but Neymar will still want a reasonable wage.

GettyImageA new strategy

Perhaps Barca have changed. Xavi has worked admirably with his financial limitations, giving young players a chance to flourish, while finding value in the transfer market. Under him, the Gavi-Pedri duo has become one of the best midfield tandems in world football. Andreas Christensen proved to be good value on a free last summer, forming a solid partnership with Ronald Araujo at centre-back. Meanwhile, his willingness to bring La Masia full-back Alejandro Balde into the side — at the expense of club legend Jordi Alba — has given Barca an extra attacking thrust on the left.

The manager has also given new life to players who seemed to be growing out of the shirt. He revitalised Sergio Busquets last year, stripping down his responsibilities to the passing and tackling that made him a position-defining No.6. He carved out a role for De Jong that allowed the Dutch midfielder to replicate his magical spell at Ajax in 2019. He even got life out of Ansu Fati, who grabbed 10 goals in all competitions while playing the most minutes of his injury-interrupted career.

This summer, everything seems geared towards for a similar strategy. Ilkay Gundogan looks like solid business on a free transfer while Inigo Martinez will provide valuable centre-back cover having also arrived as a free agent. Meanwhile, Oriol Romeu was impressive against Real Madrid in pre-season after being brought in for less than €8m (£7m/$9m) from Girona. Their only big outlay has been on Brazilian teenager Vitor Roque, though he will not arrive until the new year.

And the spending will likely end there — unless any other money crops up. Xavi himself has reportedly refused to sanction a move for Neymar, while also brushing off the minute chance of bringing in a disgruntled Felix. Barcelona may be priced out of the transfer, but they're also smart enough to avoid it now. Why would a title-winning team revert back to their old ways?

Corrective measure to boost spirits – BCCI secretary

Sanjay Patel, the BCCI secretary, has said the appointment of Ravi Shastri as the Indian team’s director of cricket was a “corrective” measure

Nagraj Gollapudi19-Aug-2014Sanjay Patel, the BCCI secretary, has said the appointment of Ravi Shastri as the Indian team’s director, and the reshuffle in the coaching structure, was a “corrective” measure to arrest the waning spirits among the players in England. Patel also made it clear that despite India suffering heavy defeats in the last three Tests in England, the BCCI was not thinking of replacing the captain MS Dhoni and the coach Duncan Fletcher.Though the decision to put Shastri in charge of the team, and temporarily replace bowling and fielding coaches Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney with Indian staff, was taken by the BCCI, Patel said Dhoni and Fletcher were on board. “I conveyed the BCCI decision to both of them. Dhoni readily agreed and even Duncan has not said a word here or there.””The team is with Ravi Shastri. Now it is his baby,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “He will handle everything. If he asks me for any help I will extend.”Shastri’s appointment was suggested by Patel, who spoke to the former India allrounder before proposing his name to the BCCI office bearers. When asked if Shastri was the only candidate discussed, Patel said he had the necessary credentials. “We looked at all options. I must appreciate that Ravi Shastri readily agreed to work in the interests of the Indian team. I asked him, ‘This is a challenge, Ravi.’ He said, ‘Sure Sanjay, we can work out something.'”Patel did not elaborate on Shastri’s responsibilities or the division of duties between him and Fletcher. “He will do everything that is required for the team,” Patel said. “They (Shastri and Fletcher) will decide the roles between themselves.”When asked what led the BCCI to create a position that had not existed before, Patel said the board felt the players would need some sort of rejuvenation after losing the Test series 3-1.”We wanted to see what was wrong with the boys. We have full faith in all our players. To support the Indian team, this was the best option to start with. You mean to say our boys do not know how to play cricket. But mentally the players could have been upset. So we wanted to appoint someone who could also work on the mental conditioning. We felt Ravi’s experience on field and off field, and his long tenure in cricket as a ex-captain and now commentator, were handy.”India’s loss in all the major overseas Test series under Fletcher’s watch has sparked an outcry from former India captains and selectors to sack him. Patel did not speculate about Fletcher’s future. “It is premature to discuss,” he said. “Right now the situation through which the Indian team is going, we have taken the first step. We are not thinking beyond that. After the completion of this tour we will review everything and then decide further action if required.”When asked if there had been any pressure from within the BCCI to think about a replacement for Dhoni as captain, Patel said: “Not at all. Our full support is with him for the entire series. I am absolute about that. I have told him that I have complete faith in him. The rest of the decisions will be taken by selection committee.”Patel also said it was incorrect to conclude Dawes and Penney had been sacked. “You cannot say that right now. We have not discussed anything about their contracts. We have just asked them to step aside. They can go on holiday, or go back home. They can even come to India if they want.” Dawes and Penny were replaced by R Sridhar, B Arun and Sanjay Bangar. The contracts for Fletcher, Dawes and Penney had been renewed as recently as April, when they travelled to Chennai to meet Patel, N Srinivasan, the suspended BCCI president, along with senior board officials. “Under the current situation we felt corrective steps were required,” Patel said. “Even if I had taken a decision few months ago but if it was needed to change that now, there is nothing wrong.”

Liverpool slam PGMOL's 'unacceptable' reasoning for Luiz Diaz offside error and outline 'clear need for escalation & resolution' in damning statement after Tottenham defeat

Liverpool have issued a statement slamming the PGMOL's 'unacceptable' reasoning for VAR's decision to disallow Luis Diaz's goal against Tottenham.

Diaz goal disallowedLiverpool reduced to nine menLost 2-1 to SpursWHAT HAPPENED?

VAR ruled out Diaz's goal in north London despite the winger clearly being onside. PGMOL accepted that an error had been made, and claimed that they would contact Liverpool to explain why such a mistake occurred. Liverpool, though, do not believe their explanation is satisfactory.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool were reduced to nine men in the game against Spurs, as both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off. The home side ultimately won the game 2-1, as a 96th-minute Joel Matip own goal gave Spurs all three points.

WHAT THEY SAID

Liverpool have issued a damning statement, reading: "Liverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL’s admission of their failures last night. It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined.

"We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

"It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention. That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable.

"Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency. This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.

"In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution."

Harshal's 11 knocks out Rajasthan

A round-up of the Ranji Trophy Group B games on January 31, 2015

ScorecardFile photo: Virender Sehwag’s 41 in the second innings was the most a Delhi batsman could score in the match against Vidarbha•Getty ImagesSeamer Harshal Patel took 5 for 43 in the second innings, extending his match haul to 11, as Haryana surged to an innings-and-119-run victory and Rajasthan were knocked out.Having started the day following-on at 38 for 5 on the usually spicy wicket in Lahli, the visitors stumbled further to 39 for 7 before crashing to 74 all out. Joginder Sharma also prospered, claiming figures of 5 for 27 in 13 overs. The Haryana bowlers needed only 9.2 overs on the third day to seal their second win of the season.Puneet Yadav failed to add to his overnight score and fell for 13. No. 9 Deepak Chahar top-scored with 19 off 21 deliveries, an indication of Rajasthan’s batting failure. Fittingly, Harshal wrapped up the innings when he bowled Pankaj Singh for 2.Sixteen-year old Himanshu Rana, who made 149, to power Haryana’s first innings to 373, was named Man of the Match.
ScorecardVidharba inflicted the first loss for Delhi in this Ranji Trophy season, beating them by an innings and 93 runs in Nagpur.Left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhurv and seam-bowling allrounder Shrikant Wagh proved to be a menace for the Delhi batsmen picking up three wickets each. Wagh ended with a match-haul of 8 for 90 while Dhurv picked up 7 for 51.Delhi started the day at 133 for 8 with Varun Sood on 21 and Virender Sehwag on 6, but their resistance was short-lived as Delhi were bundled out for 154 in their first innings where Wagh claimed 5 for 46 and Dhurv bagged 4 for 34.Having been made to follow-on, Delhi couldn’t manage to find their footing. Only one of their top five could manage to get double-figures, and crumbled to 99 for 7 before Vidharba bowled them out for 123. Sehwag’s 41 of 54 was the only notable contribution.Though Delhi are top of their group, they are yet to win a match away from home. They drew their games against Maharashtra in Pune and Haryana in Lahli.
ScorecardOdisha handed Punjab their second loss of the season, beating them by six wickets in Mohali. Odisha’s seamers made most of helpful conditions as Basant Mohanty and Deepak Behera took 17 of the 20 wickets.Behera picked up Siddarth Kaul off the third ball of the morning, but the sixth-wicket partnership between Yuvraj Singh (56) and Gurkeerat Singh (43) provided some resistance. Once their 61-run union was broken by Behera in the 36th over though, the tail crumbled to Mohanty, who finished with 6 for 42 and his second ten-for in a match.Odisha overhauled the target of 126 with six wickets to spare as Govinda Podder held the innings together with an unbeaten 60 off 137 balls.
ScorecardMaharashtra could not save themselves from following-on, but rectified a lack of big scores in the second innings as the openers Swapnil Gugale and Harshad Khadiwale made half-centuries and finished the day at 131 for 0.Maharastra’s first innings appeared in good hands when Ankit Bawne and Rahul Tripathi strung together a 97-run fifth wicket partnership. Bawne made 54 off 104 and Tripathi made 65 from 132 balls. But once they were dismissed, Ramesh Powar ran through Maharashtra’s lower order and finished with 4 for 34.Maharashtra, however, were a different side in their second innings with Gugale and Khadiwale remaining unbeaten on 77 and 52 respectively and ended the day 40 runs from taking a lead.

Sterling ignored in England squadFerdinand slammed SouthgateMore goal contributions than Grealish and RashfordWHAT HAPPENED?

The Manchester United legend was left frustrated as Sterling was once again ignored by England manager Southgate in the Three Lions squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying games. Ferdinand slammed the English manager while pointing out that the Chelsea star has more goal contributions this season than Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford combined.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The former Manchester City and Liverpool star hasn't featured for the English national team since their World Cup quarter-final against France in December 2022. Although the player was injured in the opening round of Euro 2024 qualifying games in March, he was ignored for the next four consecutive England call-ups.

WHAT DID RIO FERDINAND SAY?

Speaking on his YouTube channel , the former England defender said: "Free Sterling. Free my guy, Raheem Sterling. I don’t know what he’s done; I don’t know whose nose he has put out of joint. I don’t know what’s happened. For him not to be in the England squad is beyond me. There’s a lot of talent; don’t get me wrong. But if we’re talking form, he’s got more goals and assists, more goal contributions than Rashford and Grealish put together."

Mullins writes about son's autismSays it puts football in perspectivePays tribute to owners' outlook on lifeGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Mullin revealed how one particular scene in the hit series encapsulated his emotions around his family, in particular his son Albi, who was diagnosed with autism in January. Wrexham's talismanic striker also paid tribute to co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for putting real life matters ahead of football.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT MULLIN SAID

Writing in his newly-released autobiography Mullins shared: "When it came to the last episode of season one and that infamous play-off game in May 2022 against Grimsby, I wasn’t in any way prepared for how what I saw on screen would affect me. Footage of me taking a penalty was interspersed with clips of me playing with Albi in the garden. It showed what I already knew so well – that taking a penalty in a football match can never compare with being at home with my beautiful son.

"They got that so right. Yes, it was a big moment, but the perspective that Albi has brought into my life meant that when I kicked that ball I felt no pressure. I was ice-cold. It was just a kick in a game. I put the ball on the spot and scored. I admire that about Rob and Ryan – they’ve never fallen into the ‘football is everything’ trap. Yes, it’s massive, and it matters to people on a very deep emotional level. But it’s nothing compared to the health and happiness of your loved ones. Truth is, if someone said, ‘Stop football tomorrow and all your worries with Albi will be over,’ I’d shake their hand and say, ‘Sound.’ "

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mullin has been a prominent supporter of autistic charities since his son's diagnosis. The Liverpudlian often wears boots with logos supporting awareness of the condition and has regularly attends events promoting greater inclusion for autistic children in sport.

Ailing Northants propose change of ownership

Ailing Northamptomshire want to put the club up for sale and are aiming to raise a minimum of £1m by offering the chance of group equity investment in a new company

George Dobell24-Mar-2016Ailing Northamptonshire are aiming to raise a minimum of £1m by offering the chance of group equity investment to buy the county cricket club.Northants announced losses of £449,127 after tax earlier this month – a deterioration of some £144,000 from the previous year – with gross turnover also down and membership falling. The size of the deficit was a surprise in what was generally a highly successful year for county clubs bouyed by a payout from an Ashes summer and rising T20 attendances.Only a few days ago, the club’s chairman, Gavin Warren, said Northants was in a “strong position”. Such assurances sounded hollow after the club issued a statement on Thursday evening, saying: “While the current cash-flow situation has been stabilised – and the club is embarking on the new season with confidence – it doesn’t provide the long-term financial security that the club requires to prosper and grow.”While it recently emerged that the club had invested in plans for a new ground on the outskirts of town – a claim published by ESPNcricinfo and originally denied by the club management, many of whom have a background in property development – the board insist that they have no intention of moving from Wantage Road and that legal provision will be made to prevent development of the site for any non-cricket purpose.Northamptonshire say they hope to be able to bring in 10 to 15 major investors, most of whom they say already have links to the club as supporters and benefactors, to provide some £50,000 each to allow for a reduction in the short-term debt and give additional working capital.Current directors, some of whom have loaned funds to the county at commercial rates of interest, would be able to transfer those loans into shares. They also intend to offer existing members of the county cricket club the opportunity to buy shares, with a minimum subscription of £250. Under the proposals, members would also elect a director on the new board.”The proposal is to allow 10 to 15 major investors to provide a minimum of £50,000 each,” a statement read.”Existing members will also have the opportunity to buy shares with a minimum subscription of £250.”A new limited company will be formed which would become the owner of Northants, subject to the consent of current members.”It is expected that the current board of directors will remain in place to ensure continuity and a smooth handover.”An emergency general meeting is expected to be convened “within the next few months” with the aim of forming a new limited company to own the club.It remains to be seen if Northants members will accept the proposal and if they will regard the legal protection foir cricket at Wantage Road as strong enough once further details are released.

No more excuses! Man Utd must put together a winning run amid favourable fixture list or Erik ten Hag will be on thin ice

After a horrendous start the Red Devils have the perfect chance to make up lost ground – their manager's future rests on them taking it

Compared to the previous international break Erik ten Hag had to endure in September, which saw Jadon Sancho lash out against him on social media and Antony being accused of domestic violence, the last two weeks must have felt like a holiday. There have been no scandals affecting Manchester United players and there has been a positive update in the takeover saga as Sir Jim Ratcliffe closes in on his 25 percent stake.

There has also been some good news on the injury front, with Raphael Varane, Kobbie Mainoo, Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon returning to training. United will be without Casemiro for their next fixture against Sheffield United but given the Brazilian's startling decline in form and the fact the injury is not serious, it is not the biggest setback.

United certainly needed some respite after a seemingly never-ending injury crisis and an awful run of results, setting unwanted records with each defeat. And after their miraculous, last-gasp victory over Brentford, they head into their next seven fixtures before the next break with a spring in their step.

And this time they will need to kick on as, with two notable exceptions, they have a comfortable run of games. And as their terrible start has left them so little margin for error, they need to start performing, and urgently. There can be no excuses now and unless United pull together a run of wins, Ten Hag will have no room left to hide…

GettyBlunt Blades there for the taking

United's first game back is at Sheffield United, who are bottom of the Premier League. Ten Hag talked up the Blades' quality ahead of the visit to Bramall Lane by pointing to their last-gasp defeats to Manchester City and Tottenham. He said: "Every game in the Premier League is difficult, if you have seen their results against City and Spurs, they were very narrow wins. If you don't play your best football, you can have a loss."

However, the fact is this is a fixture United cannot afford to not win. Paul Heckingbottom's side are not just bottom of the table, they are on course for a historically bad campaign. They have picked up just one point from eight matches, taking an average of 0.13 points per game.

That puts them on track to surpass the worst-ever points total in the history of the Premier League. That accolade currently belongs to Derby County, who ended the 2007-08 season on 11 points, an average of 0.28 points per game.

They have shipped 22 goals, giving them by far the worst defensive record in the league, while they have the second-worst attack in terms of goals scored. And while they may have put on brave displays against Spurs and City, they were annihilated 8-0 at home by Newcastle and well beaten by West Ham and Fulham among others. United don't have to win pretty, as they showed at Burnley, but they simply have to take three points.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesVictory the only option against Copenhagen

Next up is a truly must-win game in the Champions League at home to Copenhagen. United have made their worst-ever start to a group stage by losing to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray and trail the Turkish champions, who look like being their biggest rival for second spot, by four points. But they have a glorious chance to make that deficit up thanks to back-to-back fixtures against Copenhagen, while Galatasaray's squad of ageing former stars play Bayern twice.

Copenhagen will be no pushovers and took the lead in both of their two matches. They threw away a two-goal advantage to draw at Galatasaray and spurned a second-half lead at home against Bayern, going on to lose 2-1. That suggests they have trouble seeing games out and if United can keep pushing them, they might cave in.

It will be an extra special game for Rasmus Hojlund, who began his professional career with Copenhagen. His two younger brothers, Emil and Oscar, remain in their academy. Hojlund caused real problems for Galatasaray only for his two goals to be undone by shocking defending by Victor Lindelof, Sofyan Amrabat and an unforgivably sloppy pass by Andre Onana.

United must learn from those mistakes because if they fail to win then they will edge closer yet to a humiliating group stage exit and be on track to finish bottom of the group, therefore also missing out on the Europa League.

Getty ImagesDerby win welcome but not obligatory

It seems strange to say it, but the derby against City on October 29 is the game that United will be under least pressure to win. While any victory against their local rivals will always be welcome, a draw or a narrow defeat to Pep Guardiola's side would not necessarily land Ten Hag in hot water, provided that his side win their other matches.

And one week out from the derby, City actually look like they are in a bit of trouble. They have lost three of their four league matches and it's not just the results. They have lacked their usual creativity in their last few outings, not helped by the suspension of Rodri or the long-term injury to Kevin De Bruyne.

Against Arsenal, they had just four shots, their lowest total in a game for 13 years. Erling Haaland is also looking out of sorts, failing to score in his last three outings for City and having just one shot in his last two league games.

City will also have less time to prepare for the game as they have to visit Young Boys in Switzerland on Wednesday.

With 70,000 fans behind them at Old Trafford, United could pull off a surprise result, as they did last season, which would really turn the mood.

(C)Getty ImagesNewcastle Cup tie is free hit

The Carabao Cup fixture with Newcastle is perhaps the least pressing of United's next fixtures and, in the grand scheme of things, a defeat to last season's runners-up and elimination from the fourth most important competition would not matter that much.

Ten Hag, however, earned lots of good will from winning the competition last season and seems determined to successfully defend it. He picked a strong team in the third round against Crystal Palace, quite unlike the Eagles, who avenged their 3-0 defeat by shocking United in the league four days later with their full-strength side.

While he will rest a few players, Ten Hag will still be keen to progress to the quarter-finals. But defeat need not knock United further off kilter.
