Mourinho admits big bid for Premier League star

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that the Blues have had an offer for Everton defender John Stones rejected, as per The Daily Mail.

The Premier League champions have star players all over the pitch and as such are not widely expected to do too much business this summer.

The departure of Petr Cech has been nullified by the signing of Asmir Begovic, whir young Brazilian forward Kenedy has also been added to Mourinho’s contingent.

However, it appears that the West London club are thinking about the future and a time when they no longer have John Terry, as a bid for Stones has been placed.

Mourinho has stated that he wants to add a young centre-half to his squad this summer and is well within his right to lodge an offer for the England international defender.

“We made a bid, we can make it, it’s an open market until September 1,” the Blues boss stared.

“We didn’t make an offer on September 2 or in March or two days before we play against Everton. We are making the bid in the period we have to make it, which is the open market.

“So until September 1, every single one of our players can get a bid and we can make bids for other players. While they say we don’t accept this bid, until September 1 we can improve the bid: £1 more, £10 more. We can improve it.

“If one day manager Roberto Martinez or the chairman comes and says: “He’s not for sale, we don’t accept any bid,” then game over. So during this process, it’s clear: we don’t deny we made a bid. It means we are trying to buy.

“We have three [central defenders]. Two are more than 30 years old. We would like to have two under 25, which would give us the next 10 years, but it’s not urgent, it is not something we are desperate for it, because we have three centre-halves, plus Branislav Ivanovic, so we have four.”

With Mourinho’s comments suggesting that Chelsea are ready to offer an increased figure to try and capture Stones, the Toffees could have a job on their hands holding onto the starlet this summer.

In Focus: Liverpool should prioritise signing goalkeeper over Coutinho replacement

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested in a statement on the club’s official website that the club will spend in the transfer window following Philippe Coutinho’s departure.

What’s the latest?

The Brazilian’s move to Barcelona seemed inevitable but what could be seen as surprising is the fact that Liverpool allowed the sale mid-season.

Klopp released a lengthy statement explaining the reasons behind Coutinho’s departure, suggesting that himself and the club were unable to convince the playmaker to stay at Anfield.

Within the statement, the manager also hinted at new signings, but he did not specify whether those deals would be made in January or at the end of the season.

“I have so much belief in the talent we have here already and even more faith, together with our owners, that we will make continued investment into the playing squad, which will allow more growth and more improvement.”

Who do Liverpool need?

There is no denying that losing Coutinho is a huge blow for the Merseyside outfit; the 25-year-old had been Liverpool’s best player for some time.

However, given the raft of attacking talent in the club’s ranks, there is no desperate need to sign a like-for-like replacement in this window.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana are more than capable of maintaining Liverpool’s prowess up front.

What the club should be focusing on, is bringing in a new goalkeeper to rival Simon Mignolet.

The club have already strengthened the defence with the purchase of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton earlier this month, but the situation between the sticks continues to be troublesome.

Both Mignolet and second-string keeper Loris Karius have struggled to show consistency, with both prone to making a costly errors.

Liverpool should be hunting for Coutinho’s replacement, but buying a new goalkeeper should be next on the agenda.

Liverpool fans tell club which stars should be signed

Liverpool fans have had to deal with the departure of Philippe Coutinho, who ended his five-year spell earlier this month to join Barcelona.

The Reds fought hard to keep the Brazilian in the summer by rejecting numerous bids from the Catalan giants.

In the end, though, the Merseyside outfit succumbed to pressure from Coutinho’s camp and allowed the playmaker to move to Spain.

Now, Liverpool fans are mulling over who the club might bring in to replace the 25-year-old.

There has already been activity this window from manager Jurgen Klopp as he has recruited Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

Liverpool supporters are not satisfied with only one new arrival in January, though, and they have used Twitter in an attempt to persuade the club to bring in some new faces.

In fact, the fans hijacked the Twitter announcement confirming that youngster Ryan Kent has joined Bristol City on loan.

Rather than wish the player good luck, most supporters were more concerned with who else might be coming through the welcome gates at Anfield.

Three reasons West Ham must hijack Stoke City’s bid to sign Badou Ndiaye

According to Sky Sports, Stoke City are in advanced talks over a £15m deal to sign Galatasaray midfielder Badou Ndiaye, who was also a summer target for Premier League rivals West Ham United when he was still with Osmanlispor.

Sky Sports says that the Turkish giants are willing to let the 27-year-old leave for the right price, although the goalposts have already been changed on many occasions during negotiations.

The report adds that the Potters are keen to agree the transfer as quickly as possible, as they are aware that they will need to begin work permit proceedings soon in order to get a deal for the Senegal international across the line before the January transfer window slams shut.

Meanwhile, the Irons were beaten 2-0 by League One outfit Wigan Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Cup at the DW Stadium on Saturday, and manager David Moyes’ need for new players before the end of the month may have increased after midfielder Pedro Obiang was stretchered off with a serious injury.

The centre of the park certainly looks to be an area that requires strengthening before Wednesday, and bringing Ndiaye to the London Stadium could prove to be a shrewd move.

Here are three reasons West Ham must hijack Stoke’s bid to sign the Senegalese star…

They need a midfielder

Rumours suggested that David Moyes was keen to add another midfielder to his squad even after Joao Mario signed from Inter Milan on Friday, and the injury blow for Pedro Obiang at the DW Stadium means it could be an urgent priority before the January window slams shut on Wednesday.

While the east London outfit have been linked with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Leander Dendoncker this month, Ndiaye would certainly be more of a like-for-like replacement for the Spaniard in the centre of the park.

The fact that Galatasaray are looking to sell the 27-year-old could prove to be an opportunity that Moyes finds difficult to ignore.

His qualities

Football Soccer – Steaua Bucharest v Osmanlispor – UEFA Europa League group stage – Group L – National Arena, Bucharest, Romania – 24/11/2016 Badou Ndiaye of Osmanlispor celebrates scoring a goal. According to WhoScored.com, Ndiaye’s main strengths are his dribbling and his tackling ability, while he also has a passing accuracy of 87.6% in 17 Super Lig matches for Galatasaray this season.

The 27-year-old has won 50 of the 89 tackles he has made, while he has shown his quality on the ball by successfully completing 30 of the 42 dribbles he has attempted.

The Senegal international has also proven he can be a threat in the final third too with previous club Osmanlispor, for whom he scored 18 goals in 75 matches.

Price tag

With clubs knowing that West Ham could be looking to replace Obiang in the last few remaining days of the January transfer windows, they – in England especially – could look to raise their prices if the Irons come calling for one of their midfield players before Wednesday.

However, Galatasaray seem willing to sell Ndiaye just six months after they signed him, and if the east London outfit could bring the 27-year-old Senegal international to the London Stadium for around £15m they would probably be delighted – especially as he should be entering the prime years of his career.

Liverpool fans excited about Wilson’s potential

Harry Wilson scored his first Hull City goal against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.

The 20-year-old is on loan at the KCOM Stadium from Liverpool, and found the back of the net for the Tigers in his second appearance since joining the club at the end of last month.

Wilson made his first-team debut for Liverpool in the FA Cup last season, but he is yet to make a Premier League appearance for the Reds.

It was not a surprise that Liverpool took the decision to send Wilson on loan during the January transfer window, and he will look to continue finding the back of the net for Hull in the final months of the 2017-18 campaign.

Wilson, who is already a Wales international, took to Twitter to reveal his delight at opening his account for Hull.

As expected, a number of Liverpool fans were on hand to hail the winger, who many cannot wait to see potentially make his mark at Anfield next season.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

In Focus: Arthur would be an excellent addition for Mourinho

According to Calciomecarto, Manchester United are prepared to rival Barcelona in the race to sign Gremio’s highly-rated Arthur.

What’s the story?

Reports in Spain state that Barcelona are keen to complete the signing of Arthur from Gremio as soon as possible, while reports in Italy state that United are still hopeful of beating the La Liga leaders to his signature.

The 21-year-old has risen to prominence with Brazilian side, Gremio. In 51 appearances for the club, the midfielder has scored two goals while also lifting the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Libertadores.

It is reported that Jose Mourinho is unhappy with his current midfield options, and he’s eager to sign midfield reinforcement in the summer transfer window.

What will he bring?

Indeed, one of Arthur’s primary talents is his versatility. The Brazilian player can operate as a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder or even as an attacking midfielder – such flexibility is useful for any team.

His most accomplished talent is his passing ability, which he exercises to terrific effect during games. Furthermore, he has developed a tendency to lay off the ball. Without question, he’s an exceedingly talented and promising player.

Does Mourinho need him?

Except for Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, United’s midfield options are either approaching 30 or have already reached 30 years of age. Moreover, Marouane Fellaini is widely expected to depart United at the end of the season. Thus, it is logical for United to sign another midfielder.

At the age of 21, Arthur will provide United’s midfield with youthful exuberance and treasured squad depth. Alongside Paul Pogba, the duo could prove to be an effective long-term partnership for the Red Devils.

Arthur is unequivocally talented and is widely tipped to become a global star, a move for the Brazilian would be excellent business from United’s perspective.

In Focus: Sunday’s clash with Celtic is Rangers’ most important game for years

As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers striker Jason Cummings is targeting victory against Celtic next week, believing his teammates can’t wait to square off against the reigning champions.

What’s the story?

Cummings was in lethal form yesterday against Falkirk in the Scottish Cup, netting his first career hat-trick and giving Graeme Murty a positive selection headache for the visit of Brendan Rodgers’ side this Sunday.

Now the striker wants to put the pressure on Celtic and let them know they’re in a title race.

As quoted by The Daily Record, the former Hibs man said:

We’re going to go and try to beat them, that’s what we’ll set out to do and push them as far as we can. Of course, we don’t want to see Celtic winning trebles and winning all the time. We’re trying to put a bit more pressure on them and I feel like we are. We can just take it week by week and win every game we can and we’ll see what happens. The boys are buzzing, these are the games you want.

Whatever happens this weekend, it’s guaranteed to be a frantic and exciting 90 minutes. It’s undoubtedly the biggest match for the Ibrox side in years and their first opportunity to get within touching distance of the Hoops in the league since promotion from the Championship.

[ad_pod ]

Will Cummings start?

Despite his excellent goalscoring turn against Falkirk, you’d still fancy Alfredo Morelos to get the nod over Jason Cummings next week, especially if Graeme Murty opts to play one up front.

Morelos is better at combining with teammates in the final third and while not as clinical in front of goal, still has 17 goals to his name this season. Cummings is also an excellent option to bring on from the bench if needed.

Despite Murty’s side having scored 23 goals in their last six matches, their path to victory against Celtic will likely be inspired by an exceptional defensive performance first and foremost, get that right and it’s anyone’s game.

West Ham United fans slate Patrice Evra after poor display vs Swansea

West Ham United are deep in the mire of a relegation fight after suffering another heavy defeat in the English Premier League on Saturday, losing 4-1 away to Swansea.

The Swans have now leapfrogged David Moyes’ side in the table, with the Hammers just three points above the bottom three, struggling for form. Just nine games remain before the end of the season and the pressure is on to pick up results.

Fans were left fuming with the result and performance, with many scratching their head at Moyes’ team selection and tactics, with veterans Patrice Evra and Pablo Zabalete deployed as wing-backs.

The duo were found lacking for pace all afternoon and supporters were particularly distressed with the performance of Evra, who failed to demonstrate why he was signed by the Irons last month.

Is the French legend completely past it at Premier League level?

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks fearful he will miss out on going to the World Cup

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks, rated at £13.5m according to Transfermarkt, fears the ankle injury he is suffering from could see him miss the World Cup in Russia this summer.

The 22-year-old picked up the injury at the end of last season but the Daily Mail says it has continued to hamper him into the current campaign, which has hindered his chances in the Spurs first team under Mauricio Pochettino.

The midfielder has made 25 appearances in all competitions for the north London outfit this term, although he hasn’t featured in either the Premier League or Champions League in 2018, with his only appearances this year coming in the FA Cup, where he hasn’t impressed the Wembley faithful with his displays.

The report adds that the Argentine boss has tried to protect the youngster and not rush him back into action too quickly in order to protect him from making the issue even worse, but a lack of game time will also hamper his chances of being named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in June.

Winks exploded onto the international scene with a brilliant display on his Three Lions debut against Lithuania in October, and he will be waiting to see if he gets the call-up for the two friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy later this month or if the persistent ankle problem sees him miss out.
