Journalist bemoans Wolves signing Costa

Journalist Steve Madeley believes Wolves signing Diego Costa is ultimately a move that has backfired, following the striker’s red card against Brentford.

The Lowdown: Costa back in the controversy

The Spaniard joined Wanderers back in September, as they looked to add firepower in the final third after the losses of Raul Jimenez and Saša Kalajdžić to injury.

Costa has struggled for Wolves to date, however, not yet finding the net or providing an assist in six Premier League appearances and being sent off at Brentford.

The 34-year-old was shown his marching orders for head-butting Ben Mee in stoppage time, meaning he will now serve a three-match suspension.

The Latest: Madeley bemoans signing

Taking to Twitter on Monday, The Athletic‘s Madeley admitted it is a transfer that is ultimately a flop for Wolves:

“Sadly, it’s beginning to look like a wolf video and a head-butt might be the most memorable moments of Diego Costa’s return to the Premier League. A piece on a necessary gamble that seems destined to fail for Wolves.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“398117″]

The Verdict: Desperate times…

There was hope that Costa may be able to conjure up some of the magic from his prime in a Wolves shirt but that hasn’t proved to be the case at all so far.

[freshpress-poll id=“399044″]

Perhaps it is to be expected at 34, but he has lost the spark that once made him such a huge handful, at a point where similarly-aged players such as Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema are still world-class, largely due to the fact that rely on instinct rather than physicality.

The hope is that Costa can contribute something positive after his suspension but it looks as though his stay at Molineux will end up being a short, unsuccessful one.

Newcastle can land next ASM with Diaby

Newcastle United were linked with a whopping 60 players during the summer transfer window, but only added five new faces before September’s deadline, and there is already mounting speculation on who the Magpies will add next to their thriving team in January.

The North East club became the richest in English football just over 12 months ago when their controversial takeover went through, and have since been strategising their rise back to the top of the Premier League table with manager Eddie Howe holding the reigns.

This season, the Magpies are exceeding expectations already as they are currently inside the top four, boasting the best defensive record in the entire league – conceding just 10 goals in total – and credit has to be given to the club’s thorough recruitment process that has built a team that can compete at the highest level.

So, where do Newcastle go next when it comes to using the winter transfer window to strengthen their already highly-impressive team?

One area that could use some development area is the wider positions of the forward line, with Allan Saint-Maximin’s constant injury issues plaguing the side’s ability to have their strongest attacking lineup available.

There is no doubt that Saint-Maximin has the quality to start at St James’ Park, however, the talented 25-year-old winger has had 12 separate instances of injury during his three-year tenure at the club, missing 41 matchdays whilst in recovery.

As a result, the signing of reported transfer target Moussa Diaby could be the perfect next move for Newcastle to ensure they can maintain their current impeccable form in the Premier League.

The £59m Bayer Leverkusen winger was heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park over the summer, but the Magpies were dealt a blow when Diaby confirmed he would continue to play in the Bundesliga. However, he is now back on the club’s radar after a fantastic start to the season.

Over 11 league appearances, Diaby – who was hailed “dangerous” by Nils Petersen – has scored two goals, registered three assists and created a whopping nine big chances, as well as making an average of 2.5 key passes, taking 1.7 shots and completing the majority of his dribble attempts (53%) per game.

Not only that, but the Frenchman currently ranks first for chance creation, ranks second for key passes and ranks 10th for crosses in the entire Bundesliga, which is incredibly impressive and something Howe will surely find it hard to ignore when he considers the transfer window ahead.

As such, Diaby could be the answer to Allan Saint-Maximin’s lack of availability in the forward line and would definitely be a great addition to boost goal contributions in the second half of the season.

Adama Traore let Wolves down va Brentford

Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to win yet again as they drew 1-1 at Brentford in today’s Premier League clash.

It was a gritty performance from Wolves, who were looking to claw their way out from the relegation zone, although it took a Ruben Neves equaliser in the second half to secure what might yet be an important away point.

Diego Costa, who looked lively during the match, was sent off in stoppage time for violent conduct, and that summed up Wolves’ campaign so far.

Rising star Hugo Bueno didn’t give his best performance either, winning just four of his ten duels during the game and losing the ball ten times, but Adama Traore was perhaps the Old Gold’s biggest liability.

Adama Traore put in another poor performance

Benefitting from an extended run in the team due to Pedro Neto’s injury, the Spain winger hasn’t exactly set the world on fire recently.

Against Leicester City last weekend, the 26-year-old completed just 20 passes as Wolves were thrashed 4-0, and today’s lethargic display won’t do him too many favours either.

A SofaScore rating of just 6/10 was the worst on the pitch today and he failed to threaten Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, registering no shots during the match.

The winger also failed to record a single successful dribble from three attempts while managing to lose possession a staggering 18 times as he struggled to assert his influence on the game.

With just 14 successful passes played, it’s clear that Traore was starved of any meaningful service on the wing, but this shouldn’t have hindered him from dropping deeper and trying to create opportunities.

The Spaniard has heaps of ability, but in tight matches such as today, the 26-year-old needs to be at his best in order to provide plenty of chances for his team-mates. With six failed crosses out of six, it was another bad day at the office.

Wolves face a home clash against Brighton and Hove Albion next week, and it is already looking like a must-win encounter if they are to go into the World Cup break outside of the Premier League relegation zone.

Predicted Sheffield United XI vs Rotherham

Sheffield United could move back into the Championship’s automatic promotion spots as they face Rotherham at Bramall Lane on Tuesday evening.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side produced a superb display at the weekend as they thrashed table-toppers Burnley 5-2 to hand Vincent Kompany’s side just their second defeat of the campaign.

Three points against Rotherham in Tuesday’s Yorkshire derby would see the Blades move above Burnley into top spot.

Thus, Heckingbottom will be desperate for his side to pick up where they left off, against a Millers side that are without a win in their last five.

Here is how Football FanCast expects Sheffield United to line up at Bramall Lane, with two changes from the side that started against Burnley.

Wes Foderingham looks unlikely to lose his place in between the sticks after starting 16 games in the Championship so far this season, with seven clean sheets to his name.

There is one change at the back for the Blades, as Ciaran Clark starts ahead of Jack Robinson in the left centre-back position, to give the “fantastic” – as dubbed by his manager – Englishman some rest after he only recently returned from injury.

Clark starts alongside John Egan and the impressive Anel Ahmedhodzic to complete a solid back three, with George Baldock and Enda Stevens keeping their place as the bombarding wing-backs.

John Fleck and Oliver Norwood also keep their place in the middle of the park, although assistant manager Stuart McCall suggested that loanee Tommy Doyle could return to the squad, so he will be pushing for a start.

However, his Manchester City teammate James McAtee will definitely be fit, so he earns a start ahead of Ben Osborn in midfield, to provide some more creativity and attacking threat against a side the Blades should be looking to defeat.

Finally, Iliman Ndiaye and Oliver McBurnie unsurprisingly start together up front, with 18 league goals between the pair so far this season.

Chelsea leading Endrick race

Chelsea are thought to be leading the race to sign Brazilian wonderkid Endrick, according to The Evening Standard’s Nizaar Kinsella.

The Lowdown: Endrick profiled

Endrick is just 16 years of age but is already a household name in Brazil after scoring 165 goals in 169 games for Palmeiras’ youth teams.

He has been hailed as a ‘phenomenon’ by Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and is sponsored by Nike. The left-footed forward has scored three times in five first-team appearances for Palmeiras, but it looks as if he could be on the move in the New Year.

The Latest: Endrick transfer update

Kinsella shared a story for The Evening Standard regarding Chelsea and Endrick on Tuesday. He said that ‘several recent meetings’ have been held with the Stamford Bridge club over a deal, with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain also in the race for the teenager’s services.

Chelsea are hoping that their financial might can tempt Endrick, with any potential transfer to be signed in early 2023 ahead of a move to London the following year, when the player will turn 18.

The Verdict: Exciting

Endrick appears to be a star of the future, so it is exciting to know that Todd Boehly and Chelsea are pushing to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

A move for the 16-year-old could be a major coup in the long run, but it would be interesting to see what the Blues would do with the youngster in the immediate future, should they secure his services.

A loan back to Palmeiras could make sense for all involved, and it looks as if this will be one to monitor over the coming months.

Maguire set to start for England vs Iran

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is set to start for England in their World Cup clash with Iran, according to reliable journalist Sami Mokbel.

The Lowdown: Maguire’s poor form

The 29-year-old has suffered a torrid time of things at United in the past 18 months or so, poor performances.

It has led to huge question marks surrounding Maguire’s place in England’s World Cup squad, let alone being named in Gareth Southgate’s strongest XI in Qatar.

As the Three Lions prepare to take on Iran on Monday, a big team news update has emerged.

The Latest: England start expected

According to The Daily Mail‘s Mokbel, Maguire will partner John Stones at the back for the game, with United teammate Luke Shaw also featuring:

“The England boss is set to keep faith with Harry Maguire in central defence despite his problems at club level. John Stones is expected to play next to Maguire.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-6/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Massive decision

This is a huge call from Southgate – one that will not only raise eyebrows among United supporters but also fans across the country, given Maguire’s form.

It is a massive show of faith, and while the Red Devils skipper could do well against a team England will be expected to beat based on FIFA World Rankings, how he eventually handles a better opponent will be the real test.

Maguire has rarely let England down, in fairness, with three goal contributions in the last two major tournaments which has seen England reach the semi-final and final, and he can be effective when his form is good, but there is enormous pressure on him to prove his worth in the coming weeks.

Rangers: Ryan Kent attracting more interest

Transfer expert Dean Jones has stated that Glasgow Rangers winger Ryan Kent is attracting interest from Germany as well as England ahead of January.

The Lowdown: New talks planned

It was reported earlier this week that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team are ‘making a fresh attempt’ to try and tie down the 26-year-old to a new contract at Ibrox and are planning to use the international break to ‘open new talks’ over his future.

Premier League side Fulham are thought to be ‘monitoring’ his situation, and they will ‘weigh up’ whether or not to make an approach in the January transfer window.

Kent’s current deal expires in the summer, meaning that he can leave as a free agent then, or for a cut-price fee in January.

The Latest: Plenty of interest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has stated that not only clubs in England but Germany too are interested in signing the Rangers forward, adding that his future should be decided by the end of the year.

The journalist said of Kent: “I know he’s got a couple of clubs interested in him in England, there’s been a couple of clubs in Germany tracking him for a little while now as well too.

“So, we should know by the end of the year exactly which way this is going.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-5/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Keep him!

Kent has perhaps not been at his best this season, with some of his performances criticised as his team have struggled to keep up with Celtic at the top of the Premiership.

However, the winger has still managed five assists in the division, the joint-most out of his team-mates at Ibrox.

Hailed as a ‘wizard’ by his former Gers team-mate Leon Balogun, Kent managed an impressive 19 assists in all competitions last season, including five on the Light Blues’ journey to the Europa League final (Transfermarkt).

He is still only 26 years of age, and he has plenty more to offer for the Teddy Bears should they extend his contract.

Spurs: Conte interested in Ugarte

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Manuel Ugarte to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Portuguese outlet O’Jogo, who claim that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are continuing to monitor the Uruguay midfielder at the Qatar World Cup this winter, with the Italian duo believed to have been tracking the 21-year-old ever since his impressive Champions League displays for Sporting Lisbon against Spurs earlier this season.

However, earlier reports revealed that Paris Saint-Germain are also keeping a close eye on the central midfielder, while it is also claimed that Sporting are hoping to tie the six-cap international down to a new one-year contract at Estádio José Alvalade, a deal that would see the youngster’s release clause rise from €60m (£52m) to €80m (£69.5m).

“Midfield machine”

Considering just how impressive Ugarte has been in Portugal so far this season, it is not hard to understand why Conte would be interested in a deal to bring the 21-year-old to north London this winter, as the youngster would undoubtedly make an exceptional addition to Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma in the middle of the park.

Indeed, over his 13 Liga Portugal appearances in the current campaign, the £16.5m-rated talent has been in fantastic form, making an average of 3.0 tackles – the joint sixth-most in the league – 1.4 interceptions and regaining possession 1.1 times per game, as well as winning a whopping 6.1 duels – at a success rate of 55% – per fixture.

The £11.8k-per-week enforcer also impresses in possession of the ball, having created one big chance for his teammates, in addition to playing an average of 1.5 long balls, 0.4 key passes, being successful with 1.1 dribbles and completing 41.4 total passes – at a success rate of 92% – per match.

These returns have seen the player who Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig dubbed a “midfield machine” and David Cartlidge labelled a “roaming” midfielder average an eye-catching SofaScore match rating of 6.95, currently ranking him as Rúben Amorim’s ninth-best performer in the top flight of Portuguese football.

As mentioned earlier, the 21-year-old also impressed during Sporting’s 2-0 victory over Spurs in the Champions League this season, enjoying 72 touches of the ball, completing 50 passes – at a success rate of 89% – making four interceptions and three tackles, completing one dribble and winning seven of his 10 duels – at a success rate of 70% – against the north London side.

These metrics not only saw the Uruguay starlet earn a simply sensational SofaScore match rating of 7.2, but his performance also confirmed that Ugarte is more than capable of holding his own against Spurs’ own central midfielders – with the youngster bossing both Höjbjerg and Bentancur at the Estádio José Alvalade back in September.

As such, should the 21-year-old go on to impress for Uruguay against Portugal and Ghana in his country’s remaining two Group H games in Qatar, it would not be surprising to see Conte launch a bid for the £52m sensation this winter – as Ugarte could well help to form a midfield machine in north London.

Newcastle: Andrey Santos can be Bruno 2.0

Newcastle United could be set to bolster their midfield ranks with another south American talent…

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic, the Magpies are tracking a number of talents in the mould of their Australian prospect Garang Kuol.

One of those names is Andrey Santos, who at just 18 years old has been starring for Vasco da Gama in his homeland.

It is said that Eddie Howe is not desperate for first-team additions unless they offer big improvements on the current side, so this move would mark a view for the future instead.

Next Bruno

Given the creativity of this youngster, it is only right that he draws comparisons to their own Brazilian hero in Bruno Guimaraes.

The 25-year-old became an instant hit on Tyneside following his £40m January move, with five goals in his first 17 Premier League games helping propel his side from certain relegation to mid-table security.

He has since become an integral cog in their midfield, offering a tough-tackling-presence alongside an impressive ability to dictate the play from deep.

In Santos, they could replicate this in another defensive midfielder who has all the traits to replicate this Toon Army favourite.

This season in Serie B, the 5-foot-9 stalwart has eight goals in just 33 appearances from the engine room.

Despite operating quite low down the pitch, he is said to boast a technical ability far beyond many Brazilians that have come before him in England.

Juninho – whom Santos views as an idol – was quick to declare his love for the teenage sensation. The dead-ball wizard claimed that “physically, he is a monster”.

He continued: “Technically, he’s way above the others. He’s not going to be better than me, he’s going to be much better than me. He is a much more complete player. At 18, I didn’t play half as much as he does, I’m not ashamed to say that.”

With those claims coming from a man who still holds the record for most free kicks scored in history, it is clear this young talent has a monumentally high ceiling.

To sign him now would be a stroke of genius for Newcastle, who could secure their long-term replacement for their mercurial midfield maestro.
