West Ham: Gianluca Scamacca may leave

West Ham summer signing Gianluca Scamacca has been linked with an exit as reports from Italy make a surprise claim.

The Lowdown: Hammers player exodus?

Members of the Irons squad have been linked with potential moves away this summer.

The most obvious of these names is midfield sensation Declan Rice, who has been attracting serious interest from Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, the agent of West Ham forward and current Torino loanee Nikola Vlasic has reportedly explained that the Croatia international would like to remain in Serie A.

The Latest: Scamacca eyeing West Ham exit…

Now, Italian news website PLANETAMILAN.it have shared an update involving Scamacca, as the 24-year-old allegedly ‘wants to return’ to play in Serie A.

Indeed, the striker has found it difficult to fully break into manager David Moyes’ starting eleven and is now eyeing a summer exit.

However, as AC Milan take an interest, West Ham won’t let him go for cheap – with this report claiming they will demand around £44 million for his services.

The Verdict: Pinch of salt?

Just half way through his first season at West Ham, Scamacca is currently still finding his feet again after an injury lay-off and it could take more time for him to adapt life in the Premier League.

The Italy international suffered a knee problem mid-way through January, just after he scored in West Ham’s 2-2 draw away to Leeds, and it’s been difficult for him to fight his way back into Moyes’ eleven since.

That being said, Scamacca has netted seven goals in all competitions this season, and a hot streak of form towards the end of this campaign could seriously bring up those numbers.

Called a ‘quality’ player by members of the media, we believe the former Sassuolo star still has plenty to prove in claret and blue.

Newcastle eyeing Napoli manager Spalletti to replace Howe

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing up Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti as a potential shock replacement for Eddie Howe.

The Lowdown: Bad form

Newcastle’s form has been patchy to say the least this year, recording just four wins in total over all competitions, and scoring just nine goals in 12 games (Sky Sports).

This has included a Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester United, and three 2-0 defeats in a row ahead of Sunday afternoon’s match at home to Wolves in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s position should not really be under threat, considering the work that he has done to get them into a major cup final and challenging for European places in the first place, but if the poor form continues until the end of the season, the new ownership may start having a look around.

The Latest: Spalletti interest

As per Italian news outlet Calciomercato, the St. James’ Park outfit, as well as fellow top-flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, are ‘toying with the idea’ of hiring Spalletti as their new manager, with PSG also thought to be interested.

His current deal at Napoli expires in the summer, but they have a clause that can be activated to extend his contract until 2024.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Stick with Howe

There is no doubt that Spalletti is a top quality manager, having been hailed as a ‘genius’ by journalist Mina Rzouki.

Napoli star Piotr Zielinski has also lauded him as an ‘excellent’ coach, and says that the team are doing ‘exceptional things’ this season.

Indeed, Napoli are almost through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Frankfurt in their last-16 first leg tie, and are 15 points clear at the top of the Serie A table, looking almost guaranteed to win the title.

However, the job that Howe has done at the Magpies should not be forgotten, having turned them from a relegation-threatened side to Champions League hopefuls, and getting them to a major domestic final gives extra credit in the bank.

Nonetheless, the board should not make the rash decision of letting him go this summer, with Spalletti someone they could target further into their long-term project.

Leeds defender wanted by many clubs

Leeds United centre-back Robin Koch ‘has many clubs interested’ in his services, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Contract talks

Koch has missed just one Premier League fixture this season, featuring regularly alongside January signing Max Wober in recent weeks under new head coach Javi Gracia.

The German has admitted that he would be open to becoming Whites captain in the future and has also said that his advisor has already held talks with Elland Road officials over a new contract. The defender’s current deal expires in 2024, with Koch recently saying:

“During the season, I want to distract myself as little as possible with planning for the future.

“The first talks between the club and my advisor are currently underway. Towards the end of the season and during the summer break, I will deal with that. Now my focus is 100 per cent on our games and goals.”

However, despite the in-house talks over a new contract, it looks as if he is of interest to a plethora of clubs ahead of the summer window.

The Latest: Romano’s comments

Romano was talking in his Caught Offside column regarding Koch in the last 48 hours. He name-checked Newcastle following links of a move to St James’ Park for Koch, adding that ‘many clubs’ are ‘interested’ in the Leeds man.

“On links with Robin Koch – Newcastle are still preparing their summer strategy, I’m not sure the targets are 100% clear at this stage.

“For sure they will be busy and they are tracking many players. “Koch has many clubs interested but it’s not something advanced at this stage.”

The Verdict: One to watch

Should Leeds suffer relegation to the Championship, then perhaps Koch could be one of a number of players to leave Elland Road, potentially alongside young forward Wilfried Gnonto, who is attracting interest from Juventus.

Koch has impressed at centre-back in 2023, coming in for praise from Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison, who said this about the defender following the 0-0 draw with Brentford in January.

‘I thought Robin Koch at the back was outstanding.

‘I thought he was brilliant. He put his body on the line, he defended well. He had a real good battle with Ivan Toney. Both players got booked, and you have to battle Ivan Toney because he’s a brilliant striker who can cause you problems. He was in his face and was battling him, but they defended ever so well.’

Therefore, it could be one to keep an eye on over the coming months, but hopefully, Koch will help Leeds remain in the top flight, which will leave the Whites in a good position to fend off potential offers, especially if the player signs new terms in Yorkshire.

Chelsea resigned to making Lukaku loss

Chelsea have accepted the fact that they will make a huge loss on Romelu Lukaku should they sell the striker this summer, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

The Lowdown: Exit highly likely

The Belgian made his return to the Premier League and indeed Stamford Bridge back in 2021 but is currently out on a season-long loan at Inter Milan after falling out of favour.

In January, Spanish reports relayed an update from the 29-year-old admitting that doesn’t want to return to work under Graham Potter, which has alerted several clubs to his potential availability.

Saudi Arabian clubs, Everton and Aston Villa have all been credited with an interest in the forward, but most recently, a new transfer plan has emerged.

Calciomercato claim that the Blues could look to include their player in a deal to re-sign Tammy Abraham, but no matter where he ends up, the club will be down from a financial point of view.

The Latest: Chelsea accept fate

According to Football Insider, Chelsea have ‘resigned themselves’ to the fact that they will be making an ‘enormous loss’ on Lukaku should his sale be sanctioned later in the summer.

Inter’s attacker arrived in SW6 for a £97.5m fee but ‘sources with knowledge of his situation’ believe that Todd Boehly will have to accept a cut-price sum of less than £30m.

The Blues are already paying for part of his salary whilst on loan and it’s stated that the owner needs to ‘trim the squad’ and ‘balance the books’ ahead of the 2023/24 term.

The Verdict: Let him leave

Lukaku has made zero appearances under Potter being at Inter since he was appointed, and that won’t change any time soon, so Chelsea would be making the right decision to cash in, albeit for a significantly lower fee than they would have liked.

The 104-cap international scored just eight goals in the top flight throughout the whole of the 2021/22 season before returning to Italy, therefore lacking the kind of prolific form required to succeed.

The Antwerp native has also been previously slammed for his performances in the capital by journalist Josh Bunting who labelled him a ‘disgrace’, stating that he has a ‘rotten’ attitude and should ‘never play for the club again’.

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku in the summer so Lukaku’s replacement is already lined up, it’s now just a case of finding a potential suitor that would be able to put the best offer on the table.

Arsenal could sell Rob Holding in summer

Arsenal could reportedly sell Rob Holding along with nine other players in a mass summer clear-out.

The Lowdown: ‘Outstanding’ against Palace

Holding had to step in for the injured William Saliba in the 4-1 win at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League last time out, and put in an ‘outstanding’ performance in the words of journalist Steve Kay.

Indeed, he won a player-high 11 of his individual duels, and also made more clearances (five) than any of his team-mates, while he was also accurate with all five of his long ball attempts, and recorded one successful dribble, two tackles, 87 touches of the ball and a 91% pass accuracy (SofaScore).

However, that was Holding’s first start in the top flight this season, and he has been limited to just ten starts in 18 appearances in total over all competitions so far.

The Latest: Mass clear-out

As per The Sun, Holding is one of ten players who could be facing the chopping block at the Emirates Stadium this summer.

They are thought to be ready to listen to offers for Nicolas Pepe, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nuno Tavares, Pablo Mari, Cedric Soares and Alex Runarsson, while Kieran Tierney and Folarin Balogun are also facing uncertain futures.

The Verdict: Keep him!

While Holding is not a regular starter, he has proven to be a useful squad player in case of injury.

Mikel Arteta has called upon him no fewer than 89 times over the last four seasons that he has been in charge, showing how much faith that he has in the 27-year-old.

Being English as well, Holding helps fill the homegrown quota, and so there is no harm on keeping him for at least another season, with him, Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jakub Kiwior four solid centre-back options for Arteta going into the next campaign.

Crystal Palace: Guehi wanted by Spurs

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is being targeted by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer window, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Rise to prominence

The Eagles centre-back isn’t out of contract at Selhurst Park until 2026, but being a regular feature this season having started 27 of the 28 top-flight games, has been rewarded for his performances.

England manager Gareth Southgate recently called the 22-year-old up to his Three Lions squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers which has raised his profile among clubs eyeing possible targets.

Roy Hodgson will know that the 6 foot star will be looking for a move elsewhere in the upcoming window should the club get relegated, and if that is the case, he isn’t short of a potential suitor.

The Latest: Spurs eyeing Guehi

According to Football Transfers, Tottenham ‘want to bolster’ their defensive ranks with the addition of Guehi ahead of the 2023/24 term.

Manchester United are also credited with an interest in the star but it’s reported that Antonio Conte’s side are the ‘closest’ to wrapping up a deal later in the summer.

Reporter Steve Kay delivered a further update on Spurs’ current stance. He said:

“Spurs are interested in signing Marc Guehi in the summer. Palace want £65m. Spurs apparently won’t pay that – they’re looking at paying around £45m.

“Tottenham have been looking for a young, versatile defender for quite a while now, and they have recently inquired about Aymeric Laporte and Pau Torres.

“They want someone who can play as a left- or right-sided centre-back in place of Eric Dier, who is a midfielder playing in a centre-back role, and Davinson Sanchez, who has been at the club since 2016 but simply hasn’t hit the heights expected of him.”

The Verdict: Keep hold of him

Guehi has been lauded a ‘leader’ at Crystal Palace by talent scout Jacek Kulig so Hodgson and the hierarchy need to do everything they can to keep hold of him beyond the summer window.

The Cote d’Ivoire native is currently averaging 3.7 clearances and 1.6 tackles per league game, alongside recording an 86.3% pass success rate, displaying the rock he is at the heart of the backline and how comfortable he is playing out from the back (WhoScored).

The England international is also strong in the offensive aspect of his game having scored four goals and provided one assist during his time at the club, highlighting the threat he brings to set pieces (Transfermarkt).

Finally, Guehi adds versatility to the squad with his ability to also operate at left-back and right-back and even the thought of losing him will be a huge blow to Palace.

Man United Could "Unleash" £1.4k-p/w "Leader"

Manchester United saw their hopes of securing Champions League football next season dealt a significant blow following the loss to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson handing the hosts a deserved win at St James' Park.

A major issue for United boss Erik ten Hag following that "lifeless" defeat – as per Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst – is the midfield ranks, with the Dutchman failing to settle on a suitable partnership in the absence of the suspended Casemiro.

With Christian Eriksen also yet to return from injury, the former Ajax head coach opted for a trio of Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer for the trip to Tyneside, despite the fact that the Red Devils had "barely had a midfield" while utilising those same three players in the FA Cup win against Fulham, as per The Athletic's Adam Crafton.

With the only other senior option that of the polarising Fred – who has been branded "not good enough" by club legend Roy Keane – the Old Trafford outfit are rather limited in that department, hence the latest suggestion that a new 'number eight' could be a priority this summer.

Although such a statement signing is likely needed ahead of next season – amid apparent interest in both Frenkie de Jong and Jude Bellingham – in the short-term Ten Hag may need to look to the academy ranks to find a potential solution, with 18-year-old, Dan Gore, one standout candidate.

Who is Dan Gore?

A shot of life at senior level has yet to emerge for the teenager in his United career to date, although the midfield maestro does appear to be in the manager's thinking, having been called up to first-team training throughout the campaign.

The combative and composed ace – who notably irked Anthony Martial with a crunching, training ground challenge earlier in the season – has been hailed as "one of the most talented youngsters" in the club's academy set-up by talent scout Jacek Kulig, with that sign of the potential gem that Ten Hag has on his hands.

The England youth international was notably "superb" as part of the FA Youth Cup-winning side last term, according to MEN's Steven Railston, and has gone on to make "excellent progress" in the current campaign, notably registering two assists in 14 games for the U21s in Premier League 2.

Manchester United's Youth Cup winners

That fine run included a standout showing as captain in the recent draw with Arsenal in that latter competition, having been hailed as the "catalyst for creativity" in that 1-1 stalemate with the Gunners, as per Railston.

The £1.4k-per-week youngster's quality was also on show during the club's brief EFL Trophy run earlier in the campaign, with Gore averaging 1.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game from his three outings to illustrate his tenacious approach, while also averaging one successful dribble per game.

That ability both on and off the ball was only recently praised by youth coach Mark Dempsey, who hailed the young 'leader': "I think he’s a proper footballer, good with the ball, good without the ball, and he can travel with it. His final pass has to improve for me, that’s the last bit for him, but the rest is great.

"I like to see him play football because he’s one of them to get fans off their seats. He smashes into people, technically he’s fantastic and he’s been terrific all season. He’s been captain a number of times and personality-wise, he’s a quiet boy, but he’s a leader.

"He leads by example. He’s a local lad, he loves the football club and you see that in the way he plays. Whether he’s playing at Old Trafford, a three-a-side at Carrington or at The Cliff, it’s the same performance from the kid and we’ve all got a lot of time for Daniel."

Such traits will likely go down well with both United supporters and with Ten Hag, with Gore's all-round attributes potentially making him a dream candidate to fix the club's current midfield woes.

Liverpool Could Ditch Jones For Unbelievable £30m Man

Liverpool are reportedly among the Premier League clubs who are interested in signing Bristol City starlet, Alex Scott, amid the teenager's standout form in the second tier of late.

What's the latest on Alex Scott to Liverpool?

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds – as well as both West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers – are said to be keen on signing the 19-year-old this summer, with manager Jurgen Klopp keen to address the club's 'significant issues' in central midfield.

The report suggests that the Merseysiders' chief scout Barry Hunter and head of recruitment Dave Fallows took the trip to watch the Guernsey native in action for England's U20 side against Germany last month.

The highly-rated playmaker – whose existing deal at Aston Gate is set to run until the summer of 2025 – could reportedly fetch as much as £30m if he is to be sold at the end of this season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Who could Alex Scott replace at Liverpool?

There is no doubt a need for further midfield additions at Anfield this summer, with the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having just a matter of weeks left to run on their existing deals, while veteran ace James Milner is also currently out of contract at the end of the season.

It would be one of the club's young stars who Scott could replace in the side, however, with the Robins' maestro able to prove a potential upgrade on academy graduate Curtis Jones, with the latter man having failed to truly kick on in recent years.

The 22-year-old's woes were evident in the recent draw with rivals Arsenal, with the Echo's Ian Doyle writing that the 6 foot 1 man was 'unable to use [the] ball effectively and [the] crowd soon lost patience with the youngster.'

The signing of Scott – who has been lauded as an "unbelievable player" by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola – could seemingly allow Klopp to ditch the struggling Jones from the side.

Bristol City's Alex Scott

The differing creative quality between the pair is showcased by the fact that the Bristol ace has scored once, provided four assists and averaged one key pass per game from his midfield berth this season in the Championship, while Jones has failed to register a goal or an assist, while averaging just 0.3 key passes.

Equally, the latter man has also offered little defensively from his nine Premier League appearances after averaging just 0.8 tackles and one interception per game, while Scott, by contrast, is far more combative having averaged 2.1 tackles and 0.9 interceptions from 37 league outings.

The teen sensation – who has been likened to City's Jack Grealish – may have only been competing in the second tier of late, although he showed his class when taking on Guardiola's men in the FA Cup last month, completing five of his six attempted dribbles and winning 11 of his 15 total duels.

To be able to thrive against such elite opposition is an indication that Scott could easily make the step-up to the top tier, with a potential switch to Merseyside potentially set to be bad news for the likes of Jones.
