How many times has Messi won the Ballon d’Or?

The Argentine has won the personal accolade on seven different occasions between 2009 and 2021, with old adversary Cristiano Ronaldo second on the all-time list with five awards to his name.

This combined with the fact that he has now essentially completed football – having won the 2022 World Cup last winter – means many feel as though Messi is the greatest footballer of all time.

And at 35 years of age, it appears as though we are sadly coming towards the very end of his career as the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain man has decided to leave the European game and head to America.

Even so, he departs having still delivered the goods over the past season, most notably with Argentina in Qatar, and so could possibly win the Ballon d’Or for pulling off such a remarkable achievement.

However, it seems as though Messi is not particularly interested in the prize anymore as he made clear in a recent interview (via @AlbicelesteTalk on Twitter).

|ndeed, he told the press: "Does Ballon d’Or matter to me? No, at this stage in my life, it is no longer important to me.

"I’ve always said, the individual prizes are not what matters to me, but the collective ones are the most important to me. The most important prize at the moment is the World Cup. This is the greatest prize for me."

Unsurprisingly, Messi clearly cherishes his World Cup win above anything else he's achieved on a personal level over the course of his career.

Even so, his numerous Ballon d’Or wins will help future generations understand just how special he was as a player. With that in mind, the award does still hold real value and it will be interesting to see who it will go to win it in 2023, if not Messi.

As per Goal, they still rank the Argentine as the favourite at this moment in time. After that, Erling Haaland of Manchester City – with 53 goals, nine assists, a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup under his belt – is in second.

While Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Kevin De Bruyne make up the rest of the top five.

Rain allowed only 38.1 overs of play. A brief shower forced lunch eight minutes early, and only six balls were possible in the second session. Pakistan’s innings ended 5.2 overs into the third session, after which the New Zealand openers came out and faced one ball before it rained again.Pakistan were 76 for 5 at the start of the day’s play, and trailed New Zealand by 195. That they narrowed their deficit to 55 was down largely to two partnerships featuring Azam: 74 for the sixth wicket with Sarfraz Ahmed, and 67 for the seventh with Sohail Khan. Taking to his Twitter, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano offered the latest verdict on the future of Leicester City gem James Maddison.

With the midfielder having starred in a relegated team, many are vying to rescue him from a level far below his station.

Ange Postecoglou obviously shares the hierarchy's interest in the 26-year-old, but Newcastle United stand in their way.

The Italian journalist wrote on Twitter: "Newcastle will insist on James Maddison deal this week as they don’t want a long saga — he’s top target but decision has to be made soon. Tottenham are also working on player side, still pushing and into the race; no bid was submitted last week despite reports."

It is expected that the Foxes will command a fee in excess of £50m, likely buoyed by this saga set to develop.

Could James Maddison help the Tottenham squad?

In acquiring this creative England international, Postecoglou could instantly reinvigorate an attacking force that somewhat faltered last campaign. Were it not for the goalscoring exploits of Harry Kane, it could have proved a truly abysmal year for the Lilywhites, even worse than it already was.

The 29-year-old notched 30 league goals, and was hardly helped out by the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Heung-min Son.

The latter's underperformance in particular was frustrating given how consistent a threat he had proven to be since joining in 2015. He has hit double figures in the league in every season but his first, yet saw his numbers drop from 23 goals in the 2021/22 term, and 17 the year prior, to just ten league strikes in his most recent campaign.

To reignite the 30-year-old back to his previous levels, this midfield magician would surely offer the supplementary talents needed to place him in more profitable situations.

After all, for a weak Foxes side, he still managed 19 goal contributions and maintained an impressive 2.3 key passes per game.

His scything passing range could cut through defences to find the electric Son in behind, with the former Norwich City maestro's early-season form even leading pundit Dean Saunders to suggest he was "world-class".

Perhaps when surrounded by such an abundance of truly quality attacking talent, placed in the free-flowing system that Postecoglou will seek to employ, Spurs and indeed Son could finally get back on track with Maddison the catalyst for such a return to the top.

Everton could potentially complete the signing of Leeds United striker Rodrigo this summer, according to an update from journalist Paul Brown.

Have Everton been linked with Rodrigo move?

The Blues remained in the Premier League by the skin of their teeth last season, staying up on the final day after a nerve-shredding 1-0 victory at home to Bournemouth.

After two poor years in the top flight, it is essential that Everton now kick on and look to finish higher up the table, but new signings will be required in order for that to happen, with quality too often lacking all over the pitch of late.

Rodrigo is one player who has been linked with a summer move to Elland Road, having suffered relegation with Leeds United last month. It is highly unlikely that he will stay on and play in the Championship in 2023/24, so a new challenge will appeal to him instead, with his current deal expiring next summer.

Are Everton being backed to sign Rodrigo?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Brown talked up the idea of Everton making a move for Rodrigo during the summer transfer window, saying they would be able to fund his services:

"Rodrigo, clearly, is the kind of signing that Everton could currently fund. Until new investment comes in and the board is properly reshuffled, it's difficult for Everton to commit huge funding to any kind of transfer at the moment.

"That is an interesting one. He does have a pretty good goalscoring record in the Premier League, particularly if you compare him to Everton's current strikers."

Rodrigo could be a strong short-term signing for Everton, providing Sean Dyche with the extra firepower that is needed, considering they only scored 34 goals in 38 Premier League games last season, highlighting the importance of bringing in more natural goalscorers.

At 32, the £100,000-a-week Leeds man isn't getting any younger, but eight goals in 28 caps for Spain outlines his pedigree as a footballer, and he is still at a level where he can be a key man for the Blues for a couple of years. He was also described as "absolutely sensational" by Gary Neville last season.

Of course, the hope is that Everton become more financially strong this summer if the ownership issue changes, but for now, players of Rodrigo's ilk are ideal, with his experience and eye for goal both weapons that can aid Dyche's side and help them pull away from the relegation zone.

However, the Australians are hopeful that Lynn will recover in time to be part of the Twenty20 side to take on Sri Lanka in mid-February, when the Test players will already be in India.Lynn made his ODI debut on his home ground at the Gabba in the first game against Pakistan last Friday, but was ruled out of the second match in Melbourne due to an aggravation of his existing injury. The sidelining of Lynn comes at an unfortunate time for the batsman, who had lit up the Big Bash League with the Brisbane Heat and had a chance to make a one-day spot his own.”He’s obviously been playing in a lot of pain, even through the BBL,” Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann said ahead of the second ODI against Pakistan in Perth. “It’s just got to the stage where he can’t function anymore.”He’s got a couple of weeks with really no cricket, light duties … a little bit of physical stuff but nothing weight-bearing. He’s got to calm down the neck – it’s quite aggravated.
