De Villiers hopeful Wanderers pitch will not aid Sri Lanka

The Wanderers will look like the Wanderers on Saturday, which is hardly startling news except if you saw it two weeks ago during the second T20 between South Africa and Sri Lanka. The surface was dry, cracked and took turn, the hosts criticised it for resembling Colombo, Sri Lanka had them in the spin and levelled the three-match series. There will be none of that again.Even if groundsman Bethuel Buthelezi has not been given any instructions, he would have heard stand-in T20 skipper Farhaan Behardien wonder what happened to the pitch that is reputed for its bounce and carry. “We haven’t quite got to the bottom of it,” Behardien said, when asked if he was given an explanation for the conditions. “But it wasn’t a traditional Wanderers wicket.”For the ODI it should be after captain AB de Villiers stressed the importance of making the most of local conditions. “Everywhere you play around the world teams try and cash in on home ground advantage. It’s important for us to – not make it ridiculous – but to play to our strengths,” he said. “That’s why touring is so difficult, especially to the subcontinent and there’s nothing wrong with that. They make pitches the way that they feel they’ve got the best chance to win. We’ve probably haven’t got it right in that last T20 and one or two of the ODIs but this wicket looks really good.”A Johannesburg ODI is usually a run-fest, especially since South Africa started playing there in pink as part of a breast-cancer awareness project. In the four pink games since 2013, South Africa have averaged 351 and won all of them.Specifically, de Villiers himself has taken to the change of kit. He has scored two centuries, including the fastest hundred in ODIs off 31 balls against West Indies, to average 97.50 and admits there’s something about the occasion that gets him going. “I enjoy big crowds and big moments and there’s a bit of hype and a lot of noise around this game.” he said. “I love playing at the Bullring. Once I get going and I get to 50 or so and the crowd gets a bit louder, it gets me going as well.”A sell-out is expected on Saturday, which means more than 30,000 people will pack into the venue in anticipation of a series win. South Africa could secure the trophy with two games to play, not only to give them the opportunity for a second series whitewash at home but as part of a strategy to learn to string together victories as they would need to do at an ICC event.”If we are going to win big tournaments, you’ve got to win five or six games in a row sometimes. We’ve got to get that habit going of winning series 4-1, 5-0, instead of 3-2 like we’ve done in the past because when you get to a World Cup, 3-2 is not good enough,” de Villiers said. With the Champions Trophy less than five months and only 11 matches away, de Villiers wants South Africa to start getting into good habits now and to maintain them until the 2019 World Cup. As has often been the case, de Villiers is confident South Africa have what it takes to break their trophy drought but knows the proof will only come with a cup. “The culture is stronger than ever. The guys seem to have a lot of direction and a lot of feel for where we are going as a team but our true test will be at the Champions Trophy.”

Fans React As Arsene Wenger Offside Rule Set For Trial Run

Football is a forever-changing game, whether we like it or not. There are still some fans that will remember a life without the back pass rule, whilst the rest of us have to suffer what it must have been like at five-aside every week. And who could forget away goals? Oh, how we miss the drama of those so dearly.Arsene Wenger and FIFA’s offside rule is one of the most extreme changes that could occur yet, however, with attacking players handed a huge advantage compared to the microscopic detail that VAR has given us recently. It doesn’t surprise us that Wenger is focusing on the attacking play, though, given how electric his Arsenal sides were going forward in their prime. And, now, he’s looking to see even more goals.

What is Arsene Wenger’s proposed offside rule?

Wenger’s offside rule, which is set to go through a trial run, according to DirecTV Sports, via Sports Joe. The trial run will take place in Sweden’s U21 men’s league and U19 women’s league.

Meanwhile, trials will also eventually take place in both the Netherlands and Italy. But, what does the rule entail?

As quoted by ESPN, Wenger explained: “You will be not offside if any part of the body that can score a goal is in line with the last defender, even if other parts of the attacker’s body are in front.”

Indeed, the new rule changes the scope of when a player is considered offside. As of right now, when any part of a player’s body, excluding hands and arms, are ahead of the final defender, they are considered offside.

Wenger’s new rule would hand the advantage to attacking players, however, which will see any part of an attacker’s body that they can legally score with ruled onside if in line with the last defender even if other parts of an attacker’s body are behind the defender.

This would give attacking players an extra yard away from the backline in a new rule which would give extra benefit to some of the quickest players in world football – although it could force defenders to abandon the popular high-lines used these days, and see them sit much deeper.

How fans have reacted to FIFA’s new potential offside rule?

The news hasn’t exactly gone down well with fans across the football world, with many quick to shut the idea down. After all, the question comes to the fore once again in football, why fix what is not broken?

It will certainly be interesting to see how the trial runs go. Here’s how fans reacted to the news:

Man United Make Bid For 25 y/o Captain

Manchester United have reportedly made a bid to sign Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

What’s the latest Man United transfer news?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag appear to be on the hunt for more signings this summer after securing a move for Mason Mount.

The England international has become the first player through the door at Old Trafford ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, joining in a deal worth an initial £55m plus a further £5m in player performance add-ons.

With a new midfielder brought in, attentions now appear to be turning towards a new goalkeeper after David de Gea’s contract expire at the end of June. The Spaniard’s future remains up in the air, with Inter Milan’s Andre Onana appearing to be a key target to come in and take over as first choice.

Reports have suggested that personal terms have been agreed with the Cameroon international and a new verbal €45m offer has been made to the Serie A side, although Inter are thought to be holding out for €60m.

Should De Gea move on and Onana arrive, another goalkeeper could still be of interest to those at Old Trafford, especially with Dean Henderson wanted back at Nottingham Forest, this time on a permanent deal.

Therefore, Onana and Tom Heaton could eventually be the only senior options for Ten Hag, but another new target appears to be Bayindir.

The Daily Express relayed reports from Turkey over the past 48 hours regarding Man United and Bayindir. It is claimed that the Red Devils have launched a shock swoop to sign the Turkey international, with a €3m (£2.5m) bid submitted.

Bayindir is ‘widely recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in the Super Lig and he could yet reach new heights if he was to seal a move to Old Trafford, although it's highly unlikely he would be coming in as the No.1’.

Who is Altay Bayindir?

Bayindir is 25 years of age and has been with Fenerbahce since 2019 after leaving Ankaragucu. Valued at €11m by Transfermarkt, Bayindir is under contract until 2027 and is named as Fenerbahce’s club captain. He has made 141 appearances for the club in all competitions, keeping 42 clean sheets and conceding 160 goals.

A five-cap Turkey international, Bayindir was once praised by former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil when the German was playing alongside the goalkeeper for Fenerbahce.

As per FBref, Bayindir has been compared to Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and Newcastle United’s Nick Pope, so he could be a smart signing in a relatively cheap transfer. He stops more crosses than De Gea and his average length of goal kicks is shorter than the Spaniard, so he could be viewed as a shrewd addition at Old Trafford, potentially playing second choice to someone like Onana.

There should be plenty of chances for Bayindir to feature in domestic cup competitions, though, with Man United in four competitions, including the Champions League, and it looks as if a deal is one to keep a close eye on following this update.

Trent Boult’s availability for the second Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington will be decided on the eve the game. Boult is nursing a sore hip from the Dunedin Test and didn’t train full tilt with the squad on Monday.Boult left the field on the fourth day of the first Test after bowling just 15 overs in South Africa’s second innings. He was touted to return on the final day that was washed out. Should he be ruled unfit, New Zealand can choose from Tim Southee, left out in Dunedin to accommodate an extra spinner and Matt Henry, who joined the squad ahead of the game. Henry, incidentally, isn’t reinforcement; his inclusion was planned leading into the series.South Africa expect Southee to return on a surface with the most bounce and carry in the series, although there is also a possibility of New Zealand including both Southee and Henry if Boult is ruled out.”Southee is a quality bowler, very skilled, especially in these conditions,” Temba Bavuma said on Monday. “Fortunately, we’ve played against him, I’ve played against him. We are aware of what he brings to the party. We will make sure we pay as much attention as we can to him and make sure he is not successful against us.”Bavuma has not yet looked at Wellington pitch that was uncovered on Tuesday, for the first time since Friday when the city’s rains began More than 70 mm of rain has fallen over the last four days. Two days before the Test, the strip was covered in green grass, which may not have the batsmen smiling but should suit South Africa’s attack.”I haven’t had a look at the pitch. I never really have a look at the pitch. We are expecting something quite close to Dunedin, maybe a bit more pace, maybe a bit more bounce,” Bavuma said. “On the first day, we will just have to assess the conditions. In Dunedin we didn’t do that as well as we could have. We’ll make sure that we learn from that and make sure that in the first session, whether with bat or ball, we are able to throw the first punch.”With rain around, the groundstaff are racing against time to get the surface ready. “With the weather we’ve had we’re just trying to produce the best wicket possible. It’s been pretty tough going,” Hagen Faith, the groundsman told “We’re focusing on getting the surface hard and having the wicket ready for day one. That’s the ultimate goal.”Heavy clouds and high winds dominated Tuesday but the weather is set to improve and clear up in time for the match, which Faith expects to be a cracker. “A lot of first-class stuff has gone down to that last day, final session, and we have seen that here with Test matches as well.”

Australia players presented with CA pay offer

The proposal could end a revenue sharing model between the board and the players that has stood for 19 years

Daniel Brettig21-Mar-2017

James Sutherland (right) was hopeful the newly proposed memorandum of understanding between Cricket Australia and the Australia Cricketers’ Association passes by June 30•Peter Della Penna/ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Australia’s cricketers are considering the formal payment MOU offer announced by Cricket Australia (CA) on Tuesday, as the board pushes on with its attempt to break up the fixed percentage of revenue share agreement that has existed since 1998.While CA have agreed with the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) to include women in a single MOU for the first time, the remainder of the offer stays broadly in line with the initial pay submission presented to the players late last year. Talks have so far been the most fractious since the ACA was formed 20 years ago. The offer was formally submitted to the ACA this afternoon. The proposed changes

Total pay increases to A$419 million for 2017-22, from the current A$311 million

Average women’s pay increases by more than 125%, to A$179,000 a year from A$79,000 for international cricketers; it is A$52,000 from A$22,000 for domestic cricketers

Average international men’s central contract to rise to A$816,000 by 2021-22, with match fees up to an average of A$1.45 million from A$1.16 million in 2016-17

Average domestic men’s payments to rise to A$235,000 by 2021-22, up from A$199,000 in 2016-17

Minimum and average hourly pay will be the same for men and women domestic cricketers

Identical match fees for Women’s National Cricket League and Matador Cup

James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, heralded measures such as equal hourly rates of pay for male and female domestic players, an increase for women of 125% next to their current deals. He also outlined the overall increase in player remuneration from A$311 million over the current MOU period (2012-17) to A$419 million over the next MOU (2017-2022).”We are pleased that the Australian Cricketers Association agrees with us that women, for the first time, should be part of the MOU, and we have proposed a financial model that has gender equity at its heart,” Sutherland said.”Under the proposal, women will receive an immediate average pay increase of more than 125%. As a result, our international women cricketers will see their average pay increase from A$79,000 to A$179,000, as of July 1 this year. By 2021, we expect to see our international women cricketers earning an average of A$210,000.”And our state female cricketers, playing both WNCL [Women’s National Cricket League] and WBBL [Women’s Big Bash League], will see their average remuneration more than double from A$22,000 to A$52,000 this year. Under this offer, we will achieve gender equity by ensuring that the minimum and average hourly pay will be the same for state men and women in 2017/18. In addition, match fees for the WNCL and the Matador Cup will be exactly the same: a one-day game for a state cricketer is worth the same to both men and women.”We are also introducing, for the first time, prize money for the WNCL of A$258,000 and the WBBL of A$309,000 this coming summer.”The Australia’s women cricketers’ fees – those who play international cricket – have increased by 125% to A$ 179,000•Getty Images

One of the most hotly-contested aspects of the initial CA submission was that only the top male players deserved a fixed share of the game’s revenue because they helped provide most of windfall from international matches. Sutherland indicated that CA wanted to offer guaranteed minimums to the players while keeping any blue sky amounts over and above projections for funding other aspects of the game.CA’s figures come with the asterisk that the next round of television rights deals, both for Australian and overseas markets, are resolved over the next 15 months. Sutherland indicated that even if the revenue raised by these deals turned out to be comfortably above current projections, only international players would be entitled to a share in the upside.”We have placed the emphasis on increasing the guaranteed amount that the men will receive, rather than rely on any projected increase in revenue,” Sutherland said. “We understand that the ACA prefers the status quo, but CA believes that the model devised in the 1990s, which is based on a fixed percentage of revenue, has served its intended purpose – to make Australia’s cricketers some of the best paid sportspeople in the country.”It was a means to an end, not something that has to hold us back from providing players with financial certainty, a fair deal for all players including women, and the flexibility to invest in the grassroots of the game.”This is a landmark agreement. We are now looking forward to sitting down with the ACA to work through the details and we are confident we will be able to announce a completed agreement before June 30.”Another pillar of past MOU agreements was CA’s provision of an annual grant to fund the ACA, something the board openly questioned in their initial submission. Sutherland declined to indicate whether this was being maintained in the new offer.”That’s something that is in the detail of the proposal, I don’t want to go into that right now,” he said. “It’s something we can talk about later on. In the first instance we see that as a matter for the members and the ACA to consider and we can talk through that detail in the future.”Both Sutherland and the ACA chief executive Alistair Nicholson have spent time with the Test team in India in recent days. The players have so far been united in their rejection of any attempts to break up the revenue sharing model, and have also rebuffed CA’s efforts to negotiate directly with the players rather than the ACA.The national captains Steven Smith and Meg Lanning co-signed a letter to Sutherland to this effect in December after talks broke down. While they have resumed in the new year, the two parties remain a long way apart. Nicholson said that the ACA was positive about some elements of the pay offer, but also stated that much of its detail still needed to be digested before the players respond.”There is a lot of fine print to examine and a lot more forecast information still needed by the players,” he said. “Like all such proposals the devil is always in the details. For the moment, what can be said is that this proposal shows a number of promising signs that indicate that CA has been taking the ACA’s lead on various key points from our MOU submission.”However, with a lack of detail in the terms and conditions that underpin this proposal, the ACA will continue to seek clarification from CA and advise the players on this accordingly. The ACA will respond more fully in the coming weeks.”Australia’s looming series decider with India in Dharamsala should ensure that there will be little further jousting until the Test match concludes.

Liverpool Can Ditch Thiago By Signing £51m Sensation

An update has emerged on Liverpool and how their midfield is shaping up ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign…

Is Thiago Alcantara leaving Liverpool?

Journalist James Pearce has revealed that teams from Saudi Arabia are eyeing up a swoop for Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

However, the Spain international is not desperate to depart Anfield, despite having one year left on his deal, and has already rejected a chance to complete a transfer.

The reporter Tweeted: "Thiago is the subject of serious interest from Saudi Arabia and has already turned down one lucrative offer. His current plan is to stay at LFC for final year of his contract. Remains to be seen whether that stance changes in the coming weeks."

This comes after GOAL's Neil Jones reported that Turkish giants Fenerbahce are one of the sides interested in a deal for the ex-Barcelona star this summer.

Who could replace Thiago Alcantara at Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp must ruthlessly ditch the 32-year-old flop as he has become a liability throughout his time at Anfield due to his lack of availability.

The £20m dud has missed a staggering 66 competitive matches through injury or illness over his three seasons in England, which means that he has not been a reliable option for the German boss.

Klopp must now reignite his interest in Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram, who was dubbed a "monster" by writer Sam McGuire, in order to free up the space to part ways with Thiago.

Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.

Journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Liverpool explored a deal for the Frenchman, who could cost around €60m (£51m), before they decided to move on after the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai.

However, if the manager truly wants to upgrade his midfield this term, then he must reverse that decision.

Thuram, who has no significant injuries listed in his career to date, has made 89 competitive appearances for Nice over the last two seasons, which shows that the French gem is a durable player who Klopp can rely on to be available the majority of the time.

He is also an impressive performer in the middle of the park. The 22-year-old dynamo averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.04 across 35 league outings last season, which would place him eighth amongst the Liverpool squad throughout 2022/23 and ahead of the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Curtis Jones.

Thuram, who was hailed as "powerful" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, created 1.1 chances per game for Nice – 0.1 more than any Reds midfielder managed last term – and could use his ability on the ball to open up opposition defences on a regular basis for the likes of Mo Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Darwin Nunez to thrive in the final third.

These statistics suggest that the Ligue 1 sensation has the potential to be an excellent addition to Liverpool's squad and one that would allow Klopp to part ways with Thiago.

Fhe France international is a consistent performer as well as a durable campaigner who does not miss many matches, making him the perfect successor.

Liverpool Submit £34m Bid To Sign Impressive "Mountain"

An update has emerged on Liverpool's attempts to bring in another central defensive option to the squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to Tuttosport, the Reds have submitted an improved offer of €40m (£34m) to sign Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs during the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Jurgen Klopp's side have made an official bid as they look to ramp up their pursuit of the Dutch stopper before the start of the Premier League season next month.

It states that fellow top-flight clubs West Ham United and Crystal Palace are also interested in signing the Netherlands U21 international, although it remains to be seen if they are willing to match Liverpool's proposal.

How good is Perr Schuurs?

Schuurs proved himself to be a solid performer at Serie A level last season with his displays at the back for Torino and his arrival could spell the end of Nat Phillips' time at Anfield.

The Liverpool Echo recently reported that a new signing at centre-back would likely restrict the English titan's chances of getting on the pitch next term.

They add that Championship side Leeds United and Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord are both interested in signing the 26-year-old defender, although the club may have to drop their £10m valuation of his talents in order to facilitate an exit.

nat-phillips-liverpool-championship-leeds-transfers

Schuurs averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.87 across 30 Serie A matches last season, which is a higher score than Ibrahima Konate, Phillips, and Joel Matip managed in the Premier League for Liverpool.

This suggests that the 23-year-old battler has the potential to be one of Klopp's top options in that area of the pitch, if he is able to translate his performances in Italy over to England, whilst also having the scope to progress further.

The Torino star would also come in as the manager's youngest senior centre-back by one year. This means that the talented enforcer would arrive as a player with long-term potential at Anfield, rather than as a short-term signing with little room to grow and develop over the years to come.

Whereas, Phillips is yet to break into the first team on a regular basis by the age of 26. He made two Premier League appearances last season, which came after a spell on loan at Bournemouth in the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign.

This does not suggest that the ex-Stuttgart loanee is on the verge of establishing himself as a frontline central defensive option for the German head coach, which is why the signing of Schuurs could open the door for the club to move him on.

Bringing in the Dutch colossus, who was lauded as a “mountain” by journalist Josh Bunting, would provide the former Borussia Dortmund tactician with a fifth centre-back alongside Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Matip, and Konate, which should be enough cover for injuries and suspensions over the course of the next nine months.

This would, therefore, allow Liverpool to sanction an exit for Phillips, whether that is to Leeds or Feyenoord, as they would know that his departure would not leave them short heading into the upcoming campaign.
