Poonam and Bisht win India a last-wicket thriller

An unbeaten 18-run stand for the tenth wicket took India past the finish line after the hosts were reduced to 190 for 9

How would you describe the 2017 Women’s World Cup final? A thriller? If so, the next ODI between India and England turned out to be nothing less – this time in the opener of the three-match series in Nagpur. It took a last-wicket stand of 18, between Ekta Bisht and Poonam Yadav, to help the World Cup runners-up beat World Champions England in a thrilling finish. Before their performance with the bat, the two India bowlers also took seven wickets to dismiss England for 207.A collapse, one reminiscent of their failed run-chase in the World Cup final at Lord’s, had reduced India from 166 for 3 to 190 for 9, but with 18 needed off the last three overs, Poonam joined Bisht at the crease and scored four runs – all in singles – in the 48th over.A front foot no-ball off the first delivery of the 49th over from stand-in captain Anya Shrubsole, the Player of the Match in the World Cup final, conceded five as Bisht found the backward-point boundary. Three nervy singles and another four, from Poonam, made it 12 runs off the over. Shrubsole hung her head, clutching her knee in dismay, and India needed two to win off six balls.Bisht then worked a single towards third man off Natalie Sciver, before a wide down the leg side sealed victory in 49.2 overs. The run-a-ball scores of 7 by Bisht and 12 by Poonam handed India their first win in the 50-over format this home season, following a 3-0 hiding against Australia in Baroda last month.India should not have struggled in the low chase after Smriti Mandhana made 86. With the equation reading 37 needed off 72 balls, Veda Krishnamurthy, Sushma Verma and Jhulan Goswami played out 46 balls for 13 runs, before left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone removed all three batsmen in consecutive overs. Her 4 for 37 followed offspinner Danielle Hazell’s 2 for 24 that had left the hosts wobbling at 41 for 2 inside the Powerplay. One of Hazell’s wickets was that of Mithali Raj, lbw for a duck in her 192nd ODI appearance.Georgia Elwiss is bowled by Ekta Bisht•BCCI

Mandhana subsequently steered the chase with two fifty partnerships en route to her sixth half-century in seven matches. With Harmanpreet Kaur (21 off 38) she added 51 for the fourth wicket and shepherded India close to the hundred-run mark, before sharing a 71-run stand with Deepti Sharma. Variable bounce and turn on the Nagpur pitch forced Mandhana to be cautious, but she managed to hit five fours and three sixes.England had also collapsed after opting to bat. They slid from 71 for no loss to 124 for 6 in the middle overs. Leading the undoing for the visitors was legspinner Poonam, who dismissed Danielle Wyatt (27) and Amy Jones in the 12th over. She followed up with a second caught-and-bowled dismissal in the 16th over – Tammy Beaumont for 37 – before Bisht ran through the middle order with three wickets.A semblance of resistance, however, came from Fran Wilson, whose 78-ball 45 hauled England to 181 for 8 on the back of three partnerships, including the 40-run eight-wicket stand with Hazell. After Wilson holed out in the 46th over, Hazell provided a final flourish. Her 52-ball 33 lifted England past 200, but Bisht bowled her in the final over to set India a target of 208.

Newcastle: Magpies star once failed to outscore Gayle, now he’s ‘sensational’

Newcastle United boast a crop of players of a far greater collective quality than anything England's north east has witnessed over the past few decades.

True enough, the Magpies clinched Europa League football in 2012 and did so with a sturdy defence and a scintillating attack, but Eddie Howe has constructed a squad capable of sustaining success for many years, something Alan Pardew's team failed to do in their one-season European sojourn.

Not only has St. James' Park been transformed with new additions such as Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Alexander Isak, but players such as Joelinton and Fabian Schar have harnessed their potential and are thriving at the centre of the system.

Another, Miguel Almiron, has been positively radiant in the Magpies attack over the past few years after initially struggling.

How did Miguel Almiron previously perform for Newcastle?

The Paraguayan dynamo was signed from MLS outfit Atlanta United in a club-record £21m transfer in February 2019, having just posted 13 goals and assists apiece in the United States of America.

However, he did not hit the ground running and failed to register a direct contribution across ten Premier League appearances before the summer of 2019, starting nine times.

His first full season was not much better; while the 50-cap international bagged eight goals across all competitions, half of those came in the FA Cup against lower-league opposition, scoring just four times from 35 starts in the English top-flight.

This was the same tally as Dwight Gayle, who actually achieved the total in just ten starting displays, and despite this, he was branded a "shocking" player by journalist Matt Murphy.

In fact, Almiron actually failed to surpass that four-goal tally across any of his first three campaigns in the Premier League, plundering a measly five goals across the subsequent two terms.

Criticised for his lack of end product, the 29-year-old has always been held in good regard by the Tyneside faithful despite his profligacy due to a tenacious approach and unwavering work-rate, but there was an undeniable desire to start seeing the goals rain down with more satisfying regularity, and that they did.

How good is Miguel Almiron now?

Last season, the £60k-per-week wideman scored 11 times in the Premier League while supplying two assists from 29 Premier League starts, with eight of those goals coming in a ten-match burst of prolific form.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 14% for goals scored per 90, highlighting a crispness in possession and newfound predatory instinct in front of goal that has left him a starring member of Newcastle's flourishing squad.

This term, he has only scored twice from nine contests but both strikes have arrived in the past two divisional clashes – promising form considering Paris Saint-Germain are now just around the corner in the Champions League.

Heralded for his “sensational” rise to the fore by journalist Josh Bunting, Almiron has now subjectively cemented himself as Newcastle's finest right winger in many years, perhaps even eclipsing the impact of Moussa Sissoko, who arguably played his finest football at St. James' Park.

Tottenham Hotspur signed Sissoko in a £30m transfer on deadline day in 2016 after the Frenchman had made 133 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 12 goals and providing 19 assists. It's safe to say despite his positive performances, making an impact in the final third was not his forte, as is the opposite with the now resurgent Almiron.

Praised for his "technical quality" and "power" by former boss Pardew, Sissoko was adept at collecting the ball and charging at opponents, thriving down the right channel, but it's probably safe to say that given Almiron's performances and role in Newcastle's rise to the Champions League, he has eclipsed Sissoko's impact and legacy at the club, with the Toon sitting in mediocrity at the time.

Spurs: Agbonlahor says Tottenham now must sign "unique" star

Tottenham Hotspur have been told that if they're genuinely "serious" about challenging for the Premier League title, they must go and sign a "unique" star.

Spurs form this season

Spurs are being given a new lease of life by manager Ange Postecoglou, who's guided them to six wins out of eight in an unbeaten league start. The Australian, coming in from Celtic over the summer, has just been handed a second-consecutive Manager of the Month award – highlighting his phenomenal job thus far. Guiding Tottenham through their best start to a campaign since the 1960/1961 season, when they won a domestic double, things are well and truly on the up at N17. Indeed, there are plenty of reasons for supporters to be excited right now.

While the north Londoners are out of the EFL Cup already, having been knocked out by Fulham in the second round on penalties, their imperious top flight form suggests that they could, at the very least, challenge for a top four place. The FA Cup is also up for grabs, with Postecoglou's side now tasked with maintaining this excellent start.

All of this is perhaps made much more impressive by the absence of club legend and star striker Harry Kane, who departed for Bayern Munich over the summer. Kane, watching on as Postecoglou ushers in a new era, only has praise for the club he adores.

"I have made it clear my whole career I am a Tottenham fan and I would love to see Tottenham do well," he said at a press conference with England (via 90min).

"It's great to see. I think I've said before, the manager is doing great for them with the way they're playing. The fans are right behind the team and it's definitely what they needed after the last few years. I'll always keep an eye on Spurs and the Premier League. There is no other team in the Premier League I would want to win than Tottenham. I have to be respectful to Bayern Munich and of course, the fans know I will always have a soft spot for Spurs – there is no question about that."

Spurs transfer news – Ivan Toney

Tottenham appear unaffected by Kane's departure, much to the surprise of supporters considering his seismic impact over the last decade. However, reports have suggested that they have their eyes on a new striker for 2024. Indeed, Brentford star Ivan Toney is one of the names linked, with Football Insider recently claiming Spurs are in the running as the striker decides to depart his club.

Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking to talkSPORT, says that if Spurs are "serious" about a potential title challenge this season, they'll go and sign the forward who's been called "unique" by his manager (The Independent).

"No one will be able to afford him, he'll be something silly, £140/150million. But, do Spurs go and get Toney? If Spurs come to January and they're in a title race," he said.

Co-pundit Alan Brazil then replied: "Yeah but what if [Heung-min] Son got injured, touch wood it doesn't happen, or [James] Maddison, what then?

Ivan Toney strengths

Ivan Toney weaknesses

To which Agbonlahor added: "You've got Richarlison, he can't score, the young lad [Brennan] Johnson will do OK. I think whoever's serious about this title challenge, go and get Toney."

Toney scored 20 league goals for the Bees last season, and is now reportedly being courted by the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.
