Man Utd team news: Ten Hag can soften Casemiro blow with "sensational" £60k-p/w gem

Manchester United return to domestic duty following the recent international break today as Erik ten Hag’s side travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United in the Premier League.

The Dutchman will be hoping to carry on the momentum which saw United secure a stunning last-gasp win against Brentford in their last league match, although he will have to make a few changes to his starting XI.

What is the Man Utd team news vs Sheffield United?

Ten Hag will travel to Sheffield knowing quite a few of his players will miss the tie against the Blades due to injury problems.

Indeed, the Dutchman will be without Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Aaron Wan-Bissaka while the likes of Tyrell Malacia and Raphael Varane are also unavailable.

A new name has been added to those who will miss the tie, as Casemiro won’t be available due to suffering an ankle injury whilst on international duty for Brazil.

The midfielder was withdrawn during the 1-1 draw against Venezuela, with manager Fernando Diniz saying: "He asked to come off due to a blow to his ankle."

Ten Hag will now need to replace the 31-year-old, who was the only outfield player to feature in all 11 of United’s matches so far this term.

Scott McTominay is certainly an option, especially after his confidence-boosting cameo against Thomas Frank's men a couple of weeks ago.

Could Scott McTominay replace Casemiro?

The Scot didn’t start the tie against the Bees, but he certainly finished it. Trailing by a goal to nil heading into injury time, McTominay popped up and made himself a hero, and potentially kick-starting United’s season in the process.

While he only took five touches of the ball and completed just two passes, the midfielder scored an equaliser, before coming up with a Fergie-esque winner to secure a stunning comeback victory.

McTominay has only started two matches all season, but the £60k-per-week star gave everyone at Old Trafford a glimpse of just what he offers when given a chance.

His form for Scotland during the Euro 2024 qualifiers is testament to this. Across six matches for his country, he has scored a whopping six goals, while taking 2.3 shots per game and averaging 37.8 touches each match, and it is time Ten Hag gave him a proper chance in the Red Devils starting XI.

Lauded as “sensational” by broadcaster David Tanner following his goal for Scotland against Cyprus last month, the Dutchman will hope he can translate his form for his national side to his club as they seek points in the league.

The academy graduate managed just ten starts in the Premier League last term, yet created two big chances, succeeded with 59% of his attempted dribbles, won 60% of his aerial duels and lost possession just 5.4 times on average per game.

He has slipped down the pecking order of late, yet with injuries starting to take their toll on the Old Trafford side, the former Ajax boss might have no choice but to slot McTominay into the heart of his midfield.

It could well turn out to be a wise move.

CONFIRA A CLASSIFICAÇÃO DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

O Botafogo incomodava o Red Bull Bragantino.

Spurs star who was a 9/10 stole the show alongside Vicario v Chelsea

They say that lightning doesn't strike twice, but once again Tottenham Hotspur played host to a controversial if captivating display of Premier League mayhem, only this time they felt the violent glare of the referee's red card.

Indeed, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium welcomed two early baths to one team in a single match for the second time in little over one month, but this time it was the visitors who benefitted from Spurs' reduction to nine men, leaving Chelsea in the driving seat to surge into a late 4-1 lead despite a stoic home display.

It was a game of immense havoc, in so many ways epitomising the enthralling nature of the Premier League, but in others marring a compelling spectacle through shocking challenges and contentious calls.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs previously defeated Liverpool in a match of a similar scenario, part of a run that propelled Ange Postecoglou's side into a table-topping position.

That has now ended with a heavy – and flattering – victory for Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea, but Postecoglou will take great solace from his outfit's fighting spirit and fluid tenacity, crafting glorious opportunities to restore unlikely parity late into the affair, before Nicolas Jackson added to his 75th-minute strike to complete a hat-trick.

It was a scoreline that Tottenham need not rue for too long, this was a match of circumstance, a contest of attrition that Spurs had tantalised achieving with flying colours, before Destiny Udogie's dismissal after half-time exacerbated the quandary arising from Cristian Romero's sending off and Cole Palmer's subsequent leveller from the penalty spot.

The poignant part of the whole encounter stems from the hosts' blistering start, soaring into an early lead after Dejan Kulusevski's deflected effort careered off Levi Colwill and past the hapless Robert Sanchez.

Dominance was preserved and Heung-min Son thought he'd doubled the advantage but for the cruel intervention of VAR, which also, in fairness, chalked off strikes from Chelsea's Raheem Sterling and Moises Caicedo.

At the end of the day, Spurs fell to defeat, but the position remains one of power and promise, and with Guglielmo Vicario's rock-solid presence between the sticks, Spurs have the man to lead the push for prominence from the back.

Guglielmo Vicario's stats vs Chelsea

When Tottenham signed Vicario from Atalanta for an initial fee of £17m, viewed as the long-term successor to stalwart Hugo Lloris in goal, it was met with varied response, but he has proved himself to be among the finest in the division thus far, with a statement performance against the Blues underscoring his value.

Vicario, aged 27, was immense and proved his worth against Chelsea despite shipping four, an unflappable force who highlighted the qualities that Daniel Levy and his transfer team saw when considering a swoop this summer.

No goalkeeper in the English top-flight boasts a better save percentage than Vicario's 82.9% this season, as per FBref; the metrics-based site also records the £75k-per-week stopper to rank among the top 5% of goalkeepers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for save percentage.

The Athletic's Tim Spiers even remarked that the Italian was "playing like the spirit of Lev Yashin", such was the magnitude of his brilliant sweeping display. Tottenham played with an obscenely high line, even when down to nine men, and it could have been six or seven Chelsea goals but for the goalkeeper who was relentless in coming out of his box to stifle attacks.

Romero and Udogie aside, it was a resounding demonstration of renewed cohesion, and Vicario was at the heart of it, and while the shot-stopping ace highlighted his ability, the performance of Pedro Porro down the right channel must not go unnoticed either.

Pedro Porro's stats vs Chelsea

Porro joined Spurs on a permanent deal in the summer after spending the second half of last term on loan at the club, and has really started to come into his own under Postecoglou's wing, having now made ten appearances in the Premier League this season.

The £85k-per-week dynamo starred against Chelsea and performed admirably against the Blues' numerical superiority, taking 61 touches, winning a whopping eight ground duels which included four tackles, three clearances and blocking a shot, as per Sofascore.

He also succeeded with three crosses, producing a delightful looping delivery for Rodrigo Bentancur to agonisingly head wide after spinning away from Chelsea's defensive line, hailed for his "titanic" performance by reporter Charlie Eccleshare.

As per FBref, the 5 foot 9 star ranks among the top 10% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 9% for shot-creating actions, the top 17% for assists, the top 1% for blocks and the top 14% for tackles per 90, underscoring his protean ability.

Football.london's Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those left waxing lyrical by the Spanish defender's performance, providing him with a 9/10 match score to match the Lilywhites' imperious goalkeeper.

In his post-match ratings, he wrote: 'Made a mess of an early pass but Vicario bailed him out. From then on he was superb, blocking, tackling and also providing quality at the other end with a free-kick that Bentancur should have headed home.'

pedro-porro-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-kieran-trippier-newcastle-united

Across his appearances in the Premier League this season, Porro has averaged 3.5 tackles, 5.5 ball recoveries and 1.1 key passes per game, also completing 82% of his passes, and his resilience and defensive merit was on full show against a Chelsea team who, frankly, should have blown Tottenham away in the second half.

But they didn't and the Stamford Bridge side's wastefulness was compounded by Postecoglou's team's incredible display of fortitude, ultimately caving in at the end after a gallant effort.

It's the first Premier League defeat of the season for a football club who, just a matter of months ago, were riddled with despondency after falling to an eighth-placed league finish in 2022/23 that played a part in the sale of world-class talisman Harry Kane.

Tottenham lost, but the feel-good factor must remain intact; now is the time to show off a steely new underbelly and rebound from the setback with vigour.

With stars such as Vicario and Porro maintaining such remarkable levels, a season of memorable success could very much be achievable.

Ian Bell, 204 – never better than when he has gone

Since Ian Bell has come to terms with the fact that his England days are over, he has made it seem more illogical than ever

ECB Reporters Network30-Aug-2018
ScorecardWhile England’s batsmen were floundering at The Ageas Bowl, the batsman who some would have selected for the fourth Test, was scoring his third Championship century of the season- this time a double hundred -against Glamorgan, exceeding 20,000 first class runs, and guiding his team to a commanding position at the end of the second day at Colwyn Bay.Ian Bell came to the crease in the 11th over, and when he was out 109 overs later for 204, his aggregate against Glamorgan this season stood at 425 having scored 106 and 115 – both not out – in the earlier game at Edgbaston. He has been at the crease against them this season for 18 hours, faced 743 balls having struck 53 fours and two sixes.Unlike his centuries in Birmingham, Bell did give two chances – one straightforward, the other more difficult – but his batting overall was again a splendid exhibition of classy strokeplay, punctuated by those glorious trademark strokes through the offside. There was generous applause when he guided the ball to third man to reach his century, then more acknowledgment four runs later when he reached his personal milestone, and when he was eventually dismissed five overs before the close, Bell was given a standing ovation and handshakes from the Glamorgan players.Talking T20

When play resumed in the morning, nightwatchman Chris Wright gave his senior partner useful support by putting on 56 before Wright miscued against Meschede and saw his leg stump knocked back.Sam Hain then joined Bell, to play an attractive innings of 61 – only his second Championship fifty of the summer – and share a partnership of 121 for the fifth wicket. The stand was broken when Kiran Carlson held on to a fierce drive from Hain at extra cover to give Ruaidhri Smith his second wicket.Warwickshire were building partnerships for every wicket, and the stand for the sixth wicket produced another 62 runs, with Tim Ambrose scoring 22 before he was leg before to David Lloyd. Bad light then caused a seven over delay, with Warwickshire needing a further 54 runs in eight overs to gain maximum batting points. With plenty of time left in the game, they opted to consolidate and build up a sizeable lead and with Keith Barker providing more support there followed another fifty plus partnership stand- the fifth of the innings. Glamorgan’s depleted attack did take an eighth wicket, but by then Warwicksshire were 445 for 8 – a lead of 242.

As mudanças no trouxeram maior desafogo e criamos finalizações – e frisou:

Fabrizio Romano says "top" Man Utd ace wants out and will leave in January

Manchester United could be busy when it comes to moving players on in 2024, with Fabrizio Romano saying a “top” player will leave in January.

Man Utd exit news

The Red Devils have had a chaotic few months both on and off the pitch in recent months, with Erik ten Hag’s side not exactly making a perfect start in the Premier League. Off the field, the club brought in a number of new players over the summer, including adding to their midfield ranks with moves for Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat.

Players who have been frozen out at Old Trafford include winger Jadon Sancho, who has seemingly fallen out with Ten Hag and hasn’t featured since the end of August. Meanwhile, Donny van de Beek has actually played less than Sancho this season, featuring in just 21 minutes of competitive action this season. (Donny van de Beek stats – Transfermarkt)

An update has now emerged regarding his future, with a move away looking likely. Talking to The United Stand’s Mark Goldbridge, Romano claimed that Van de Beek will leave in the January window as he wants to play regularly. Relayed by United in Focus, the transfer expert said:

“Yes, Donny will leave in January for sure. He has to and he wants to because he wants to play. It’s a shame because Donny wanted to play for Man United, he loved this opportunity, but at the same time, he is never playing.

“He also knows after the injury he needs regular football. he can’t stay on the bench, not even on the bench, for a long time.”

Van de Beek’s record at Man Utd

Bot of Van de Beek’s substitute appearances came against Crystal Palace last month in the Premier League and EFL Cup, and overall, he hasn’t lived up to expectations since arriving from Ajax back in 2020. The 26-year-old contributed to 75 goals in 175 appearances for Ajax, but as can be seen below, has struggled in Manchester. (Donny van de Beek stats – Transfermarkt)

However, he has been praised in England by former Everton manager Frank Lampard during a loan spell with the Toffees, saying:

"I've been really impressed with him. On a professional level, since speaking to him, him coming and seeing him train, I am absolutely impressed with his fitness and his game sharpness. When you're watching training it doesn't surprise you.

"When I think back to the time he has had at Manchester United, he's a top level player. He was when Manchester United signed him and he was at Ajax. It's not easy. There are different ways of reacting and I'm sure it was tough. He has shown that if you keep your head down and keep working you can come through it.”

Van de Beek, on £120,000-a-week, is under contract until 2025, so the club could be in line to receive a transfer fee for his services, although you’d expect they may not recoup the €40m they paid three years ago.

CSA courts government scrutiny over T20 league

The country’s sports minister is considering a request to issue a moratorium on the board, preventing it from making any further announcements about the tournament

Firdose Moonda20-Aug-2018

Cricket South Africa President Chris Nenzani speaks at the inaugural player draft of the T20 Global League•T20 Global League

Cricket South Africa has run into more trouble in their efforts to get a T20 league up and running. The country’s minster for sports, Tokozile Xasa, has been asked to consider issuing a moratorium on the board, preventing them from making any announcements regarding the tournament until they appear before the parliamentary committee for sports and recreation. This request, delivered by letter on Monday morning, was made by Darren Bergman, the deputy shadow minister of sports and recreation and has been seen by ESPNcricinfo. Bergman asserts that the damage CSA have already suffered and the risks of greater financial losses are sufficient for parliament to demand assurances from the board that they can get a T20 competition up and running without any further hiccups.”While I do not believe that politicians should interfere in the running of sports and that we are best placed to play a supportive role, I am concerned that Cricket SA has the potential to risk major reputational and financial loss both to the sports as well as to the players and sponsors. This could have a negative impact locally and internationally,” Bergman’s letter reads. His comments were in reference to the legal action CSA is facing over the postponed GLT20.At least four owners have threatened CSA with legal action and reserved their rights to a team in the new T20 competition, despite the board announcing a new equity deal with broadcaster SuperSport. That deal is now believed to have fallen through, with SuperSport reportedly happy to telecast matches but averse to holding a 49% stake in the tournament.CSA’s board met in the weekend, planning to make an announcement on the future of their 20-over competition in the next two weeks, but if Bergaman’s request is successful, they will need to appear before parliament first. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Bergman said forcing to CSA to delay any further announcement would be “responsible rather than reckless.”CSA were due to address the parliamentary committee on Tuesday but asked for an extension while it prepares for next month’s AGM. If a moratorium comes in place – and Bergman hopes to hear back in the next few days – CSA may hasten their appearance in parliament. Then they need to satisfy the committee that they can conduct the 20-over tournament smoothly, despite the legal battles looming, the lack of a sponsor and the uncertainty over SuperSport’s role. All of this points to a likelihood that this new T20 league might be postponed as well, with the current six-team franchise competition continuing as usual.
