Rangers set for late transfer blunder after striker update emerges

Glasgow Rangers are looking highly unlikely to bring another centre-forward to the club on deadline day with Philippe Clement and his transfer team deciding to sit quietly rather than liven the place up at Ibrox.

A move for Oscar Cortes is reportedly done, and the winger may be the only addition through the door for Rangers on the final day of the winter window.

Rangers deadline day activity

The key talking point throughout the previous month was the need for another striker, with Lawrence Shankland the name on everyone’s lips.

A fresh update from the Daily Record suggests that any chance of the Hearts forward making a move away from Tynecastle before the deadline this evening are 'minuscule' at best.

Lawrence Shankland on international duty with Scotland.

With just 18 months left on his current deal, now was the perfect chance for the Light Blues to strike, yet it appeared as though Philippe Clement seemingly was not even interested in bringing him to Glasgow.

Regardless of interest or not, this was a move which the club should have persisted on, especially with his record in front of goal since arriving back in Scotland during the summer of 2022.

It may well turn into a deadline day blunder in the coming months.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

Lawrence Shankland would have been an upgrade on Cyriel Dessers

Since returning from the winter break, Dessers has shown an improvement in his performances compared to the start of the season.

The Nigerian has scored in all three competitive matches Rangers have played as they have earned three victories, yet Clement surely cannot rely on the 29-year-old if they are to challenge Celtic for the Premiership title.

The matter of fact is, Dessers is not clinical enough in front of goal. In the top flight this season, he has missed 12 big chances, the highest number among the whole squad, and he often requires a couple of chances before finding the back of the net.

Shankland, on the other hand, has been in sublime form since the start of the 2022/23 season. Not only has he scored more goals during that period than Dessers (47 vs 22), but he has also registered more shots per game (3.5 vs 2.8) this season, along with completing more successful dribbles per game (0.8 vs 0.4) and it proves that he could have been a solid upgrade on the former Feyenoord frontman.

Shankland could have given the Ibrox side that added firepower which may have given them a slightly better chance of winning the top flight for the first time since the 2020/21 season.

It looks as though the club may have to go through the final few months of 2023/24 with just Dessers and Fabio Silva as their two main centre-forward options.

Silva has plenty of talent but has yet to truly prove it during the embryonic stages of his career thus far.

Shankland is already on 19 goals for the current campaign and could easily smash through the 28-goal barrier that he achieved during his first term at the Gorgie outfit.

Could this be a potential move the Gers live to regret not making in the coming months? Only time will tell for Clement and his staff.

"Outstanding" Tottenham player suffers injury in new setback for Ange

One “outstanding" Tottenham Hotspur player has appeared to suffer a new injury this weekend in another setback.

Tottenham injuries 2023/24

Spurs haven’t had the best of luck with injuries during Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, with a plethora of players missing large parts of the campaign.

The Australian has had to make do without star summer signings Micky van de Ven and James Maddison for a number of months, whereas Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon have also been out for long periods of time.

Tottenham could strike similar deal to Maddison as transfer discount mooted

Spurs are expected to make a move.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 16, 2024

Postecoglou still has Spurs pushing for a top-four finish as the run-in approaches, though, however, Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves leaves them two points behind Aston Villa.

At the beginning of the year, Spurs had a total of 12 separate injuries throughout the season, totalling in 625 days lost. Now, it looks as if one of the unlucky players has suffered another setback.

New Ryan Sessegnon injury

Sessegnon was named in Tottenham’s U21 starting XI for the match against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, however, after bursting into the box, the wide man pulled up and required treatment.

Ryan Sessegnon.

He only managed to last 35 minutes before needing to be replaced, and as per The Spurs Web, the commentator described it as ‘heart-breaking news’.

The 23-year-old, who can play as a left-back, left-midfielder or left-winger, made the move to north London from Fulham back in 2019. During that time, though, he has struggled with injury, with the most Premier League appearances made in a season being just 17.

Sessegnon arrived as a player with so much potential, with pundit Noel Whelan hailing him as “outstanding” and a “£50m player in the making” back in 2020, a price tag he is yet to live up to in a Spurs shirt unfortunately.

“I saw a lot of him at Fulham and he was outstanding for them, probably the best player in the Championship a few years ago.

“He’s young and has time on his side. I expected him to make a quicker impact at Spurs, but you often get these teething troubles with young players, especially when they’re competing with top internationals. “Once he has a run of matches under his belt and gets his confidence, there’s no doubt he’s an outstanding player.

“I think he is a £50million player in the making, and Spurs and Mourinho will, too.”

The Englishman has just under 18 months remaining on his Spurs deal, and if he struggles to remain fit, then Tottenham officials may seriously look into allowing Sessegnon to depart this summer, looking to bring in some funds in the process.

Chris Dent ton hands Gloucestershire lead over Leicestershire

Tom Smith chimes in with career-best 84 after coming in as injury replacement

Chris Dent and Tom Smith staged an unlikely third-wicket stand of 195 in 66.1 overs as Gloucestershire forged a potentially decisive first-innings lead on day two of the Specsavers County Championship match against Leicestershire at Cheltenham.Skipper Dent posted a superb 125 and Smith raised a career-best 84 on a day when bat dominated ball for long periods, the hosts reaching the close handily placed on 275 for 6 in reply to Leicestershire’s 252.If Gloucestershire’s intention was to bat only once on a pitch that is expected to deteriorate over the course of the next two days, they were made to re-evaluate their plans when Chris Wright took three wickets in as many overs with the second new ball to redress the balance. The hosts are 23 runs ahead with four first-innings wickets in hand and bottom-of-the-table Leicestershire will feel they are still in with a chance against opponents who have lost back-to-back matches and must bat last.Only playing because of an injury to teenage all-rounder Ben Charlesworth, spin bowler Smith was enjoying his first Championship outing since September 2017. And how he made up for lost time, registering his highest red-ball total after being promoted up the order to help take the shine off the ball and protect Gloucestershire’s middle-order stroke-makers.Arriving in the middle with the score on 46 for 2 – Miles Hammond and Gareth Roderick having succumbed to Mohammad Abbas and a Neil Dexter run out respectively – Smith adopted a low-risk strategy to frustrate Leicestershire’s bowlers.Having scraped just seven runs in his first hour at the crease, the former Middlesex and Sussex man eventually attained only his third first-class 50 from 155 balls. Accelerating after tea, he eclipsed his previous highest score of 80, made against Surrey at Bristol six years earlier, entertaining Festival-goers with nine boundaries and visibly growing in confidence the longer he remained at large.Dent in particular has proved a thorn in Leicestershire flesh this summer, compiling a substantial innings of 176 in the drawn match at Grace Road last month. Initially subjected to a stern new-ball examination at the hand of Pakistan Test paceman Abbas, the Bristolian lived a charmed existence before moving up through the gears to register a patient 50 from 95 balls shortly before lunch.Taking charge of an inreasingly progressive third-wicket partnership in the afternoon, Dent raised his third hundred of the summer via 202 balls with his 14th four, despatched just backward of square leg at the expense of Callum Parkinson and eliciting a standing ovation from an appreciative Festival audience.By the time he departed midway through the final session, caught at the wicket off the bowling of Wright, Gloucestershire’s captain had faced 231 balls, harvested 16 fours and held sway for a little over five hours.Having worked so hard to build a platform, Gloucestershire were no doubt disappointed by what followed, Smith losing his off stump to a Wright in-swinger and Graeme van Buuren falling to the same bowler, held by Colin Ackerman at second slip later in the same over.Ryan Higgins was then bowled by Will Davis for 14 shortly before stumps, at which point Gloucestershire had lost four wickets for the addition of 32 runs, leaving the seventh-wicket pair of Jack Taylor and Benny Howell to negotiate the final three overs.Smith said: “It was a bit of a new role for me, one we only discussed after Ben Charlesworth went down with injury. I’d opened the batting for the second eleven a few times, but not played against this quality of bowling. My initial intention was to bat time and help screen the guys who were coming in after me. Batting became easier the longer I was out there and it was nice to score a 50. It’s been quite a long time coming.”

Fifties for Tom Banton, George Bartlett seal win for Somerset against Warwickshire

Duo hand visitors victory that trims gap to leaders Essex to just two points

In a match of ebbs and flows, the tide was ultimately strongest for Somerset, carrying them home with wickets in hand and the best part of two hours to spare after the promise of the morning ultimately came to nothing for Warwickshire.Chasing 258 to win, Somerset had been 49 for 3 inside the first hour’s play but half-centuries from their two brightest young batsmen, 21-year-old George Bartlett and 20-year-old Tom Banton, enabled them to close out a victory that trims the gap between themselves and leaders Essex to just two points.Yorkshire, famously involved in the three-way tussle with Somerset and Middlesex that went to the last day in 2016, are not yet out of the race and the finale to this season may yet be just as dramatic, not least because Somerset’s last two opponents at Taunton, either side of a visit to Hampshire, are Yorkshire and Essex, the latter in the last week of the season. It has not escaped their captain, Tom Abell, although the task facing him now is to ensure his team adhere to the mantra of taking one match, one session at a time.”That last game is something a lot of people have been talking about and potentially it is a great prospect, but we try not to look too for ahead,” he said.”We have two games before that and each game is massive at this stage of the year. We will take each as it comes and try not to think about anything else, try to focus on what we are doing.”He felt that this match served only to emphasise the point, the win all the more remarkable given that Somerset had to fight hard to avoid being required to follow on in the first innings after Warwickshire had piled up 419.Even after a fine hundred by Steven Davies had given them foundation, it needed gritty partnerships between Dom Bess and each of the Overton brothers to see them past the follow-on point in the face of some testing bowling by the Warwickshire seamers.”Warwickshire are a good side who had us in trouble in this match and that is the nature of this division, which is why you need to be on the money every session of every game you play,” Abell said. “We can’t afford to have sessions like we did on the first day.”But we do talk about that a lot, how we answer it when our backs are to the wall, and it really does give me a lot of satisfaction to see how we were able to come back from that position. It showed great character.”The partnership between Dom Bess and Craig Overton on day two came at a crucial phase of the match. Avoiding the follow-on was massive and then that spell from Jamie Overton yesterday, the kind of spell we know he can deliver that turn games on the end, changed the game.”The session to which he referred was the one in which Overton removed Rob Yates, Michael Burgess and Henry Brookes in the space of 12 deliveries – the catalyst for a Warwickshire collapse from 107 for 4 to 146 all out, requiring Somerset to score what came down to 250 on the final day, with all wickets in hand.On a fourth-day pitch, it was never going to be plain sailing and after losing those three wickets in the morning session, with Davies, James Hildreth and Abell all departed, the early part of the afternoon could have seen the balance tip towards the home side. But Banton and Babar Azam battled through that phase, adding 90 for the fourth wicket, the former displaying maturity and adaptability beyond his years as he has on several occasions this summer. He faced 119 deliveries spread across two and a half hours for his 66, little more than a week after he hit five sixes in a 51-ball Twenty20 hundred.George Garrett, another prodigious talent, bowled impressively again on his Warwickshire debut and the wicket of Babar will join his first-innings dismissal of Bartlett in taking up permanent residence in his memory.Yet Warwickshire’s bowlers as a collective bowled less well than they had at times in the first innings, offering too many opportunities for runs. They remain next to bottom of the table, although it probably matters little given Nottinghamshire’s seemingly irreversible spiral towards relegation.Jeetan Patel found some turn, getting the wicket of Banton via an inside edge onto pad and a super catch by Tim Ambrose diving forward, but could not land the ball on the right spot often enough and Bartlett and Bess were able to turn the chase into a relative stroll by the end.

Grêmio joga bem, vence o Novo Hamburgo e reassume a ponta do Gauchão

Show de Jean Pyerre

Pressão do Novo Hamburgo
