Tottenham identify potential £26 million Harry Kane replacement for Ange

Tottenham are thought to have added a £26 million striker to their transfer target list as they scour the market for long-term Harry Kane replacements.

Spurs eyeing new centre-forward this summer

Despite Richarlison's transformation under Ange Postecoglou this season, it remains the case that Spurs are keen to sign a new number nine.

The Lilywhites have been mentioned as potential suitors for Brentford star Ivan Toney, among others, in the past six months – but the centre-forward position was never a priority for January.

The plan to bring in a striker was thought to be one for later in the year, with journalist Dean Jones saying late last year that Tottenham will sign a replacement for Kane once we get to 2024.

“I don't know what they will look for in a Kane replacement, but they would be silly not to be looking at Ferguson right now," said Jones to GiveMeSport, commenting on previous links to Brighton star Evan Ferguson.

"I know Manchester United have had an eye on Ferguson. I'm sure Chelsea will, too, given their recruitment policy. But Tottenham have to as well. They're going to have to sign another striker eventually. Son is good for now. With Richarlison, everything’s up in the air. They will sign a new striker once we get to 2024, and Ferguson has to be on the radar.”

Other reports suggest this is still firmly the case, with reporter Pete O'Rourke telling Football Insider that Tottenham wish to sign a marquee striker this summer.

"Tottenham are expected to sign a new marquee number nine this summer to replace departed legend Harry Kane," he wrote this month.

"Kane, 30, left Spurs last year (2023) after scoring 32 goals across all competitions for the Londoners in the 2022-23 campaign. It is believed Tottenham are stepping up their plans to land a marquee new forward in this year’s summer window. That is despite the promising form of their current strike force under Ange Postecoglou’s stewardship this term."

Amid their reported pursuits to shore up other key areas of the squad, though, it is unclear exactly how much club chiefs would be willing to spend on a goalscoring centre-forward.

Tottenham identify £26m Kane replacement Omar Marmoush

According to Bild, Spurs may have a cheaper option in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush.

Indeed, the German news outlet writes via Sport Witness that Tottenham have identified Marmoush as a striker target, and he could cost as little as €30m (£26m) to prise away from his club in the best-case scenario.

Omar Marmoush for Frankfurt.

The Egyptian ace has bagged 10 goals and five assists in 18 Bundesliga appearances this season, with Eintracht boss Dino Toppmoller calling him "tireless".

"He brings a completely different energy to our attacking play through his penetrating runs and tireless work rate," said Toppmoller.

She played all three T20Is during the women’s Ashes and finished as England’s leading scorer from limited opportunities.Meanwhile, Brisbane Heat have completed their list for the new season which starts on October 18 by bringing in New Zealand allrounder Maddy Green. She has played 40 T20Is although her standout international performance was hitting 122 in New Zealand’s record total of 491 for 4 against Ireland in 2018.

Pochettino should axe Chelsea flop who’s earning £40k-p/w more than Gallagher

Despite spending an exorbitant sum of money, it has been a tough couple of years for Chelsea fans.

The west Londoners went through four managers last season only to end up 12th in the Premier League, whereas this year, they have stuck with Mauricio Pochettino – for now – and are currently 11th.

So far, Todd Boehly and Co's plan to spend big on youngsters has not worked out, and while it could still come good in the end, there are several players on big wages at the club who probably shouldn't be.

In fact, one signing from last year is on substantially more than Conor Gallagher despite making little to no impact since joining.

How much Conor Gallagher earns at Chelsea

Gallagher, a boyhood Chelsea fan, has been with the club for his entire footballing journey. He fought his way through the various youth sides and impressed out on loan before finally taking his chance and staking a claim for a spot in the first team.

The Epsom-born gem made his full debut for the club against Leeds United on the 21st of August 2022 in the Premier League, although it wasn't quite the introduction to the team that he would've hoped for as the Peacocks beat them 3-0.

In fact, the Englishman's first season in the team probably didn't go quite as well as he was hoping it would as, after making 45 appearances, he had just three goals and one assist to his name, although considering he played just 2022 minutes, it isn't as a poor a return as it first looks.

However, the 24-year-old has dramatically improved this season, scoring four goals and providing six assists in just 36 appearances while also captaining the side on 17 occasions in the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

In all, it would be quite hard to argue that the "heart" of the club, as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, isn't deserving of his £50k-per-week wages, especially as there's another player in the team earning substantially more than that while making comparatively little impact.

How much Benoît Badiashile earns at Chelsea

There are quite a few players who earn more than Gallagher in Chelsea's current squad – 18 to be exact – including Robert Sanchez, Nicolas Jackson, and Axel Disasi, but perhaps the most surprising is Benoît Badiashile.

Benoit Badiashile Chelsea

The French centre-back is currently bringing home a healthy pay packet of £90k-per-week, which is £40k-per-week more than the stand-in captain, or almost double.

Now, while a wage of £90k-per-week is unimaginable for the vast majority of people, it is not terribly abnormal in the Premier League, and so, if Badiashile was regularly playing for Chelsea, it might be easier to understand, but he's not.

In all, the former AS Monaco man has made 23 appearances since completing his £35m move last January, and while a large part of that is due to the 25 games he has missed through injury, it's also been down to a slew of less-than-ideal performances.

For example, when he was selected to start at Anfield in January, he looked utterly hopeless, putting in a display that Gabby Agbonlahor described as "dreadful" and "the worst centre-half performance I've seen in the Premier League."

He was also directly responsible for Newcastle United's opening goal in the club's League Cup tie in December, only avoiding serious criticism thanks to the 92nd-minute equaliser from Mykhailo Mudryk.

Considering his 60 weeks of wages, which amount to £5.4m, and the £35m transfer fee he originally cost the club, it is hard not to look at that £40m as money wasted, at least for now.

Chelsea played a blinder selling £34m gem who's worth less than Sterling

The Cobham star has had a rough couple of years away from Stamford Bridge.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 6, 2024

Ultimately, the young Frenchman is only 22 years old, and he could well come good for Chelsea, but given his consistent injury problems and less-than-stellar performances when he is fit, the signs aren't great.

Sir Alex personally pushing Man Utd to sign 49 y/o along with Ashworth

Manchester United are again looking to rely on their legacy to attract new arrivals, with legendary Premier League boss Sir Alex Ferguson personally intervening on one particular deal.

Make or break for Ten Hag

Though Manchester United ultimately came away with three points against Everton over the weekend, it was far from a reassuring victory.

The Red Devils were second best for much of the encounter, with the United fans having to watch on as the visitors racked up a massive 23 shots. Fortunately, Sean Dyche's side were unable to find a cutting edge, but the weekend's results have left United six points outside the top five places and seemingly certain to miss out on Champions League football for next season.

For now though, Ten Hag is safe, with United's new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe focusing instead on improving things behind the scenes.

Sir Alex Ferguson gets involved

To that end, it has been reported that once again United are enlisting the help of their club legends to convince new arrivals at Old Trafford, with Sir Alex Ferguson sensationally believed to be 'pushing strongly' for the club to complete a deal for Crystal Palace's transfer guru Dougie Freedman.

49 year-old Freedman is a hot commodity in the Premier League, having been responsible for the arrivals of Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise in south London, with all of the trio having impressed and now being linked with moves to clubs across the top six of the division.

Report claims Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to approve big Man Utd transfer

The Red Devils want to snap up a “complete” player.

ByHenry Jackson Mar 10, 2024

Football FanCast had previously reported on the potential move, with United expected to make a formal approach for Freedman in the coming weeks, but Football Insider add that Fergie himself is 'pushing strongly' for the Red Devils to complete the deal, with the former United boss a 'huge admirer' of Freedman, who reportedly used to be next-door neighbours to the Scot.

The Palace man is understood to be open to the move too, having spent seven years at Selhurst Park. It remains unclear whether or not Palace would demand compensation to allow him to complete the move, with that key detail also currently holding up a move for Dan Ashworth.

Dan Ashworth speaking with Steve Cooper.

United remain confident that Ashworth will be among their backroom staff come the end of the campaign, but Newcastle are holding out for around £20m to let him leave the club he joined from Brighton in 2022. Currently on gardening leave, it may be a situation that is solved by the end of the campaign.

Freedman's arrival would continue Ratcliffe's overhaul, having already poached Omar Berrada from city rivals Manchester City, who will arrive to take up the role of CEO at Old Trafford. With the correct people in place, Ratcliffe will be hoping for a major change in both transfer policy and results on the pitch in the seasons to come.

Virat Kohli 254*, Ravindra Jadeja 91 break down South Africa

It is hard to remember an untidier effort from the visitors in the field. Even the forecast rain refused to come to their rescue.

The Report by Sidharth Monga11-Oct-201910:15

Agarkar: Kohli is the best batsman in the world across formats

Stumps On day two of the second Test, Virat Kohli and friends just stood there and beat every bit of fight out of a tattered and directionless South African side. Kohli could have chosen to bat on and have a stab at a triple, Ravindra Jadeja could have got a hundred had he not pushed too strongly towards a declaration, and then Umesh Yadav announced his comeback with two wickets in his first two overs.Watch cricket on ESPN+

India v South Africa is available in the US on Hotstar and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the Tests.

South Africa, on the other hand, dropped catches, misfielded regularly, conceded overthrows, snapped at each other, bowled 11 no-balls, and just waited for the declaration. Oh, and they also made strides towards having the worst series for a set of spinners in India, and none of their three fast bowlers charged in for the last 18 overs of the innings. Even when Keshav Maharaj was off the field with injury. Retirements, talent drain, relative quality of this South African side compared to their other teams are things beyond the scope of this report, but it is hard to remember an untidier effort from them in the field. Even the expected rain refused to come to their rescue.South Africa’s spinners now average 95; only two sides have ended a series with worse numbers in India. Maharaj has gone at 4.04 an over so far and has averaged 85.66, putting him in the worst five on both counts. While these are mid-series numbers, it will take some correcting to not walk away with dubious honours by the time Ranchi is done.Virat Kohli drives one away•Associated Press

India’s honours were the farthest from dubious. Kohli was tested with the new ball in the first hour, but South Africa’s cordon didn’t help themselves by refusing to move closer. Thrice Kohli edged in the first exchange, but none of those went to hand. That South Africa could draw edges through traditional channel bowling tells you how sporting the pitch was. Kohli was less sporting whenever the bowlers erred, and they erred frequently. No matter how honest they kept him with length balls outside off, Kohli was brutal on the ones that were too full or too straight. This was one of Kohli’s more difficult home hundreds. Only on a crazy seaming track in Kolkata, against Sri Lanka, did Kohli have a worse control percentage over his first 100 runs than the 87.86 here. He was respectful accordingly, even with debutant Anrich Nortje.Ajinkya Rahane was less fluent as he continued his struggles against spin. He took 33 balls to score his first run off Maharaj. To the first 100 runs of the 178-run partnership with Kohli, Rahane contributed just 25; he took 100 balls to do so. Against pace he opened up a little, but Maharaj dismissed him on 59.Left-arm spin did come close to getting Kohli out: but three outside edges off Maharaj refused to go to Faf du Plessis at slip. This, though, happened well after he had reached his hundred and was now pushing for quicker runs. That was one of the reasons why Jadeja was promoted to No. 6, but Kohli was so dominating that Jadeja could score just six in the first 50 runs of the 225-run partnership.Umesh Yadav jolted South Africa early with a couple of wickets•BCCI

Kohli was toying with the bowlers, and yet he didn’t resort to hitting the ball in the air. Soon he went past Steven Smith, Don Bradman and 7000 Test runs. The 7000th was also the run that brought up his seventh double-century. He was the fourth-fastest to the mark; also only three men have scored more doubles than him. After Kohli reached his double, he and Jadeja unleashed mayhem. South Africa went to pieces. Amid overthrows and misfields, Rabada fielded a ball in his follow-through and threw it at the keeper. Quinton de Kock had his back at the throw, and all hell broke loose. A frustrated Rabada vented his anger and de Kock refused to take it lying down. Between overs, Faf du Plessis had to physically push Rabada out of an altercation. Immediately, Vernon Philander failed to bend to field a ball at mid-on.Rabada didn’t bowl an over in the last 32, Nortje in the last 22, and Philander in the last 18. It was clear that fast bowlers were the only ones who could delay India’s declaration and thus leave a little less for their batsmen to do. In those 17.3 overs, India plundered 136 runs. One of those 11 no-balls brought a wicket in this period. Du Plessis missed an edge too. India stole singles from under the fielders’ noses. South Africa had closed their eyes and were waiting for the nightmare to end. It momentarily did as Jadeja skied one on 91, bringing his average in declared innings down to 74.7.The relief didn’t last as Yadav quickly showed South Africa’s fast bowlers how to bowl in helpful conditions in India. Skiddy, swinging and attacking the stumps, he had Aiden Markram lbw with the second ball he bowled. In his second over, he had Dean Elgar playing on. With his first ball in the match, Mohammed Shami got rid of Temba Bavuma. Du Plessis sent Nortje out as nightwatchman, who survived the day but only just.
