Dyche may have sold Everton’s "unbelievable" 14-goal talent too soon

Everton have excelled defensively under boss Sean Dyche, with the Toffees having the best defensive record of any side outside the Premier League's top four.

The club's good defensive record is partially down to Jordan Pickford, with the England international making 86 saves in the top-flight – the ninth-best record of any 'keeper in the league.

Pickford has also kept the joint second-most clean sheets in the division, with Arsenal's David Raya the only 'keeper to register more.

The combination of Dyche's back-four and Pickford have given the Toffees a fighting chance of preserving their record of being in every Premier League season, despite the club's six-point deduction earlier this campaign.

Everton midfielderIdrissa Gueye.

However, the club have struggled in front of goal this season, with the Toffees only scoring 29 times in 28 games, with only bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United scoring less.

The club may have missed a trick by selling one player, who was on the books at Goodison Park with the former Toffee in great goalscoring form this season.

Ellis Simms' stats at Everton

After joining Everton's academy at 16, striker Ellis Simms instantly became a success within the club's academy, scoring 32 times in 21 U18 Premier League games – a truly staggering record.

He rapidly progressed at Goodison, scoring eight times in 15 games for the club's U21 side during the 2019/20 season, before making his first step into senior football with Blackpool just a year later.

Simms notched up ten goals in his 24 games for the Tangerines, a record that would see him make his Premier League debut for the Toffees during the 2021/22 season.

The striker started and featured for 62 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but he would have to wait nearly 18 months for his next opportunity within the Toffees' first-team setup.

The youngster enjoyed a 17-game stint on loan at Championship side Sunderland, scoring seven times before being recalled by boss Dyche.

He would go on to make 11 appearances for Everton between January and May, only featuring for 219 minutes, starting just twice.

However, the forward did score his first Toffees goal in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea – a real full-circle moment for the youngster as he scored against the side he made his top-flight debut against.

Ellis Simms' stats since leaving Everton

The club decided to sell 23-year-old Simms for £8m to Championship side Coventry City during the summer of 2023, with the marksman enjoying a brilliant scoring season.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

He's bagged 14 goals so far this campaign – a tally higher than any member of Everton's first-team setup, with Abdoulaye Doucoure achieving the most with just six.

Simms' has scored five of his goals in the FA Cup, including a double against Wolves at the weekend that secured the Sky Blues' place in the semi-final.

The "unbelievable" striker, as dubbed by Sky Sports pundit Karen Carney, allowed the Toffees to make a sizable amount of money on a player who had only shown glimpses of quality during his time at the club.

However, his form in the Championship this season could see the club regret selling the striker, with the 23-year-old having the potential to become a top-quality forward in the years to come.

'It was crazy and felt like a dream' – Phoebe Litchfield on her WBBL debut

The 16-year-old is one of the most highly-rated young players in Australia. She showed why on the WBBL’s opening night

The past, present and most definitely the future of the Australian cricket team was on display at North Sydney Oval on Friday.Alex Blackwell, who was capped 251 times by her country, padded up for another WBBL season and struck 56 off 38 balls. Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy, two stars of the current world-beating Australia side, did what they often do and sent the ball to all parts. And then there was a 16-year-old on debut who will, probably sooner rather than later, be part of that Australia team.Phoebe Litchfield only lasted 22 balls, but played out in front of a worldwide TV audience the innings went to reinforce why she has been talked about as one of the most talented players of the next generation.Earlier this year, a video posted on Twitter by New South Wales of Litchfield batting the nets went around the world. “I sort of didn’t know at the time,” Litchfield told ESPNcricinfo. “I thought they were just videoing our whole squad and then my friend was like ‘nice video’ and I was confused at the start, but it’s got a lot of views which puts on a bit of pressure on.”There was only a few days to get her head around a WBBL contract. “The nerves sort of climbed from there to the first ball,” she said.Pressure, and expectation, it appears are things Litchfield is able to take in her stride. On Friday, against a star-studded Sydney Sixers side, and walking in with her team 3 for 25, key internationals Rachel Priest and Rachael Haynes dismissed, she showed her range of strokes with a flick over midwicket followed by a deft scoop over fine leg. “I guess I go where there’s no fielders. It was on, so I went for it,” was her matter-of-fact response. It was an attempt at a repeat that saw her go lbw, but even the dismissal was significant as the wicket-taker was fellow 16-year-old Hayley Silver-Holmes.”To see such class from a 16-year-old is really impressive,” Alyssa Healy said. “That’s what’s so great about this competition, these young girls are getting opportunities.”Litchfield has already had plenty of representative honours, selected for a Governer’s General XI, touring with Australia U-19s, and a few weeks ago playing for a Cricket Australia XI against the Sri Lankans. Her WBBL debut, on a landmark night for the competition, was another milestone.”I aspired to be in the Big Bash and now I’m playing in it, so it’s a great experienced and I’m just happy to be here,” she said. “It was crazy and felt like a dream. It was a great experience, having [Alex Blackwell] out there made me a bit more calm which was nice. It’s a very good spot to watch, at the other end, Alex go at it.”There is both excitement and a degree of caution within the Thunder camp – not wanting to overwhelm Litchfield early in her career – but also an acknowledgement that her maturity stands her in good stead. There are more shots in the locker, too, with Litchfield having a 360-degree game with parts of hockey, the other sport she plays at representative level, playing a part.”I have to play hockey right-handed so it took me a while to get good at that. I didn’t do a reverse sweep today, but the reverse comes out and that’s sort of a hockey shot,” she said. She is part of the Australia Under-16 hockey side and at the moment is pleased to be able to split her focus between two sports. She knows a decision looms at some point in the future but it is not something that has been discussed yet and the Thunder coach Trevor Griffin sees it as strength that Litchfield has another focus in her life to retain a balance.”I like having the off-season to get my head off cricket, it’s a nice fitness booster and I think if played cricket all year I’d probably get sick of it, so it’s nice to switch over,” Litchfield said. “Most likely [I will have to choose] because the season is getting bigger and bigger and there’s lots of competitions around the world, but I’m not thinking about that soon. If cricket asks me to stop, I’ll stop, but for now I’ll keep playing both.”

Arsenal look to repeat Rice move by signing £42m Premier League star

When Arsenal jetted off to Dubai at the beginning of the year in search of sun and relaxation, a magic potion must have been found along the way.

Why? Well, the Gunners have been one of the best teams on the continent since that trip. They have scored goals by the bucket load and are unbeaten in the Premier League throughout 2024 so far.

They are now top of the league, clear of Liverpool and Manchester City who they face next Sunday, and they’re also into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

After a run of three matches across the New Year period where they’d not only failed to win but had also only scored once, that’s not bad going.

Key to their revival has been the likes of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and penalty hero David Raya. However, we think a certain Declan Rice deserves just a little more praise.

Declan Rice's performance in numbers throughout 2024

Rice’s marquee capture last summer sent a message throughout the rest of the league. Never in their history had Arsenal broken the £100m barrier. In fact, until Rice arrived they hadn’t broken the £72m fee paid for Nicolas Pepe. The less said about that the better.

Unlike Pepe, Rice was never destined to flop. He was always going to be a success. It’s rare you can call a £105m footballer a bargain in today’s market but that’s exactly what the midfielder is.

You could count criticisms of the England star on one hand but you’ll need an army to count up the superlatives thrown his way this season.

In the first half of the campaign, Rice was more reserved. He acted as the deepest of midfielders in Mikel Arteta’s system. He still popped up with some vital goal contributions, though, scoring late winners against Manchester United and Luton Town. It was the perfect way for the former West Ham man to endear himself to the Emirates Stadium faithful.

Yet, 2024 has seen him go to an all-new level. The 25-year-old is now adding more goals and more assists to his name. He’s even become somewhat of a set-piece specialist.

In the first half of the campaign, Rice was involved in just five goals across 28 games. Yet, across the first three months of the new calendar year (11 matches), the midfield sensation has been involved in seven goals, four of which have been assists from dead-ball situations. That’s a 40% increase on his efforts in the first half of the term and a 44% increase already on his seasonal tally of 2022/23. Not bad indeed.

Arteta has been known to favour domestic signings and in Rice, you can’t get much better. Therefore, the idea of potentially repeating this trick in the summer is an exciting one.

Arsenal transfer targets for 2024

A notable priority for this summer’s transfer activity will be a striker. Ivan Toney has been linked relentlessly since the winter but whether the Gunners will be happy to meet an alleged £80m asking price remains to be seen.

The latest name to come out of the rumour mill is another Premier League player; Morgan Gibbs-White.

Nottingham Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White

That’s according to the Daily Star this weekend who suggest that Arsenal are keeping tabs on the Nottingham Forest man’s availability with the Tricky Trees wary they may have to cash in on a few players amid fears concerning profit and sustainability rules. They have already been docked four points for a failure to follow the regulations.

Why Morgan Gibbs-White is so exciting

So, what would Gibbs-White bring to north London? Well, the £42m-rated star is a much-liked figure, winning Forest’s Fans’ Player of the Season for 2022/23.

Why did he win it? Courtesy of some dazzling efforts in the final third. Last term, the 24-year-old scored five goals and registered eight assists in the Premier League.

He’s been just as good this time around, netting four times and supplying five assists across all competitions.

What will delight Arteta is Gibbs-White’s versatility. He has achieved those numbers from a plethora of positions on the pitch. The former Wolves man is first and foremost an attacking midfielder but he can also play out wide on both sides of the attack.

That kills two birds with one stone. Arsenal arguably need someone capable of thriving in that left 8 role that’s been such a topic of fierce debate this season. Arteta also needs more cover for the likes of Saka and Gabriel Martinelli on the flanks.

What will also please Arteta is that Gibbs-White, like the aforementioned Rice, wouldn’t need a huge period of adaption. There is a reason the Gunners have acquired so many players from the Premier League in recent years. It’s plain and simple, you know what you’re getting and the player knows the division inside and out.

Rice, of course, is a world-class player but he is the prime case study in this instance. Had Arsenal spent big money on a player from overseas, there would have been more risk attached. Perhaps the player won’t adapt to English football? Perhaps they’ll miss home? There are plenty of variables.

As a result, Gibbs-White – described as a “transition monster” by ABC journalist Ahmed Yussuf – would be a shrewd acquisition that doesn’t just take influence from the Rice deal but also Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard.

The Belgian was a bargain buy at just £27m from Brighton and like Gibbs-White, features in similar roles on the pitch. With 11 goals this season, it’s safe to say that move has been a success.

The Nottingham Forest star might not be the awe-inspiring star signing that many supporters crave this summer but it would be more smart work in the market from Edu and Co. It adds depth, creativity and goal-scoring quality, alongside versatility. What’s not to like?

CSA loses second independent director as crisis snowballs

Mohamed Iqbal Khan steps down alleging serious misconduct in the organisation, including credit card abuse

Firdose Moonda05-Dec-2019

AFP

A second independent director has resigned from the Cricket South Africa board, deepening the crisis within its administration. Mohamed Iqbal Khan, who also acted as chairperson of the finance committee, stepped down on Wednesday evening alleging serious misconduct in the organisation, including credit card abuse. On Tuesday, Professor Shirley Zinn resigned as an independent director citing problems with CSA’s “principles of corporate governance”.Khan’s resignation letter, seen by ESPNcricinfo, points “all the fingers” at CEO Thabang Moroe, whom he accused of “bringing cricket into disrepute” given CSA’s current situation. The board’s problems at the moment include battles with the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), projected losses of at least R654 million (USD 44 million approx) for the next four-year cycle, a lack of sponsorship for the Mzansi Super League, the suspension of three senior members of staff, and delays in appointing the director of cricket.”I cannot believe you are not aware of the many issues that have caused this malaise and to that extent, you are also complicit, and perhaps even the entire board. However, I can no longer be part of an organisation that is fast ruining the game,” Khan wrote.Specifically, Khan appeared to agree with SACA, who had said Moroe was aware of the CSA’s non-payment to SACA for commercial rights during the 2018 MSL, something which SACA claimed when other CSA employees were suspended. Interim director of cricket Corrie van Zyl, COO Naasei Appiah and head of sales and sponsorship Clive Eksteen are currently facing disciplinary action for alleged dereliction of duty related to the year-long delay in payment to SACA, which both SACA and now Khan say Moroe was aware of.Khan is also the first person to mention financial irregularities on the record, after several insiders claimed CSA’s expenses were running into the millions. In listing “some of the issues of concern to me”, Khan wrote: “CSA never paid the South African Cricketers’ Association a contractual amount in terms of a key stakeholder contract and the blame therefore was placed on three suspended employees despite the contract being signed by him [Moroe]”, and cited “widespread credit card abuse in the office” as another point of contention. The CSA Board comprised 12 members – president Chris Nenzani, the six presidents from the affiliated provinces – Beresford Williams, Zola Thamae, Tebogo Siko, Donovan May, Jack Madiseng and Angelo Carolissen – and five independent directors, namely Khan, Zinn, Dawn Mokhobo, Steve Cornelius and Marius Schoeman CS. Now it is down to 10. The inclusion of independent members came in 2012 after Gerald Majola was forced out because of the 2009 IPL bonus scandal.Khan’s letter also revealed that CSA were due to hold a board meeting on Tuesday, which was postponed to Saturday. More resignations are expected before then.Meanwhile, a second sponsor has also spoken out about their “grave concerns,” for the way CSA is currently being run. After Standard Bank demanded a meeting with CSA on Monday, the Willowton Group, whose product Sunfoil is well known to South African cricket fans as the title sponsor in Test series until last summer, also issued a statement as they remain involved in development cricket. The Willowton Group was particularly strident in their support for the suspended trio, with whom they worked closely.”During our tenure as headline sponsor to the international test series and 4-day domestic series, we valued the relationships that were created with past and current players, that were both active in the game and administration. Their passion for the game of cricket and good governance created an environment that allowed the national team and fellow South Africans to focus on the game out on the pitch and not the side games that are so prevalent today. These same passionate individuals have been cast out of the organisation and suspended without real cause or substantiation,” the group said in a statement. The Willowton Group called for the immediate reinstatement of van Zyl, Appiah and Eksteen as well as Khan and Zinn to the board and immediate resignation of Moroe and president Chris Nenzani.CSA are expected to make big decisions at their board meeting on Saturday.

The "suffering" Leeds star who Farke must drop alongside Bamford

Leeds United can bounce back to winning ways as they return to Championship action at Elland Road tonight with a clash against Sunderland.

The Whites head into this match off the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Coventry City at the CBS Arena on Saturday, which has left the side in third place in the division.

A win would have left the Yorkshire-based outfit top of the table, having played one more game than Leicester and the same number as Ipswich, but they now have to play catchup with their rivals in order to secure automatic promotion.

Goals from Ellis Simms and Haji Wright landed all three points for Mark Robins' men at the weekend, and Daniel Farke could now look to make some changes to his starting XI from that defeat to freshen his team up against the Black Cats.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.

After Saturday's loss, FFC urged the German head coach to drop Patrick Bamford, who has struggled in recent games, to the bench but the former Norwich boss must also ruthlessly ditch Glen Kamara from the lineup.

Patrick Bamford's struggles in front of goal

The former England international has hit a rough patch of form in recent weeks and has let the team down at times with his wasteful finishing.

Farke hailed the distance Bamford ran against Coventry to help the side in and out of possession with his pressing and his runs in the channels and in behind.

However, the 30-year-old striker needs to produce quality in the final third alongside that work rate to ensure that Leeds pick up vital points in their attempts to win automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Patrick Bamford in action for Leeds United.

Over the last four matches, the left-footed dud has not been directly involved in any goals – with zero goals and zero assists – and has missed three 'big chances'.

His teammates provided him with 1.34 xG worth of chances in front of goal over those four outings, yet he was still unable to find the back of the net.

The Leeds forward, who has produced one goal and zero assists in his last six league appearances for the club, must now be ditched from the starting XI, and FFC selected Mateo Joseph as his replacement in a predicted XI for the clash with Sunderland.

As well as Bamford, Farke must ruthlessly ditch Kamara from the team after his poor display against Coventry last weekend, which was a far cry from his average performance level in the Championship this season.

Glen Kamara's season in numbers

Signed from Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers on a permanent deal last summer, the experienced midfielder has been a metronomic figure in the middle of the park for the German boss so far this season.

He has provided reliability and quality in possession to keep things ticking in midfield for Leeds, whilst also having the strength and awareness to be a solid presence off the ball to keep the ball out at the other end.

As you can see in the chart below, Kamara ranks within the top 2% of Championship midfielders for pass success rate (92.4%), and the top 6% for progressive passes (7.02) per 90.

These statistics show that there are not many better than the Finnish star when it comes to retaining and progressing possession with passes, as he rarely gives the ball away and constantly looks to play forward to move his team up the pitch.

Kamara, who has averaged 1.1 key passes per game and racked up three assists, has also been strong off the ball with 2.0 combined tackles and interceptions per match and a duel success rate of 58% across 33 league outings.

This shows that the 28-year-old whiz has come out on top in the majority of his physical battles with opposition players throughout the Championship season so far.

Overall, the Whites midfielder has been a fantastic presence in and out of possession in the middle of the park over the course of the campaign, but his best qualities were not on display in the defeat to Coventry on Saturday.

Why Glen Kamara should be ditched from the XI

After the match, Farke revealed that Kamara has been "suffering" with an illness and that his energy levels were not where he wanted them to be during the first-half.

The German boss claimed that he wanted more energy and intensity from his players during the second-half, and that is why the Finland international was brought off the pitch at the break and replaced by Connor Roberts.

As you can see in the table above, his display against Coventry was off the pace in comparison to his average performance level in and out of possession.

Kamara did not provide any creativity to help his team to open up the opposition defence, with zero key passes and zero long balls completed, and only won two duels off the ball to win possession back for the Whites.

As Farke explained, the Finnish star has been suffering with an illness of late and did not have the energy required to produce a quality performance at the CBS Arena.

With this in mind, and Leeds playing tonight and then again on Saturday in the early kick-off against Blackburn Rovers, the manager must drop him to the bench to avoid another fatigued showing.

Farke could bring Connor Roberts back into the starting XI to lineup at right-back, and this would then free up 18-year-old starlet Archie Gray to be deployed in midfield next to Ilia Gruev, which would allow the boss to ditch Kamara.

Leeds should not want a repeat of his poor display last time out against Coventry, and that is why the £26k-per-week dynamo should be ditched for this clash with the Black Cats.

It would provide him with an opportunity to rest and fully recover from his illness, hopefully, to then be back and ready to start again against Blackburn, unless Gray does enough alongside Gruev to keep his place in midfield.

COLUNA DE VÍDEO: Setoristas do São Paulo no L! analisam sequência do time e falam sobre possíveis reforços

O primeiro desfalque é do equatoriano Arboleda.
