England 'will not be afraid' to leave out Stuart Broad or James Anderson – Chris Silverwood

England coach must weigh up whether to pick a spinner for the second Test in Cape Town

Chris Silverwood has insisted England “will not be afraid” to take tough selection decisions if necessary.Silverwood, the England coach, will have to weigh up whether or not his side should pick a spinner for the second Test in Cape Town starting on January 3. If they do, it could leave him and Joe Root, the two men who will select the team for that Test, with a tricky decision over which seamer to leave out. With Sam Curran having been the pick of the bowlers in the first innings and Jofra Archer having taken a five-wicket haul in the second, that may leave Silverwood and Root with the tough decision between selecting only one of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.ALSO READ: Silverwood defends Root’s decision to bowl first despite heavy defeatBut while Silverwood said he would not shy away from such a selection – and accepted that England’s bowling plans had gone “off-piste” for a while on the third morning – he underlined his faith in his senior players.”In Jimmy and Stuart we have a wealth of experience and we’d be really stupid not to take that into consideration every game,” Silverwood said. “It would be naïve of us not to do that.”But equally you do want your youngsters to come through and if we’re going to make room for a spinner then we’ve got to have a look at that.”We have to look at which seamers will be right for that particular pitch and choose from there. If there is a big decision to be made, we’re not afraid to make it.”We started off planning the bowl at the top of off [stump] on the third morning. Then the tailenders frustrated us and we went off-piste a bit at that point. We formulated a new plan and that worked well. We’ve got to make sure that when we’re bowling we’re very clear on what we have to do and we stick to the plan.”Any decision over Broad and Anderson is complicated by the context of the first Test. Broad was recovering from illness and will probably be back to full fitness next week, while Anderson was playing his first first-class game for many months and, again, may feel he is better placed for next week’s game.It is far from certain England will select a spinner in Cape Town. Spin was almost irrelevant in the last Test on the ground – South Africa picked an all-seam attack – and, with Jack Leach unlikely to be available, England may keep faith with the all-seam attack which claimed all 20 wickets in a Test for them the first time this winter.Dom Bess and Jack Leach could come into contention for the second Test•Getty Images

Silverwood also promised to keep faith with Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler. Neither man has made a Test century this year – Buttler has made just one in his 38 Tests and is averaging 25.10 this year with one half-century in his last 14 innings; Bairstow is averaging just 18.55 with one half-century in his last 16 innings – but Silverwood’s underlying confidence in them remains high.”We’ve just got to keep backing them as we know they’re both very fine players,” Silverwood said. “They’re an asset to a team.”Jonny wasn’t in the team going into New Zealand, but he did a lot of work behind the scenes. He was in Potchefstroom and then Cape Town with the fast-bowling group, facing the bowlers and working on his game. He worked particularly hard and earned his way back into this team.”He got his chance when Ollie Pope went down ill and took over the gloves when Jos went down. So he’s a great asset to have, somebody like that who can take over the gloves and is a fine player.””We know Jos is a fine player and we know he can hurt people. We’ve got to keep giving him the opportunity to do that.”Jos in in a position where he will sometimes have to marshal the tail as well. That’s the unique challenge of batting at No. 7. But equally he can go out there are really hurt people at times. At the moment, we feel he’s best suited to that position.”England travel to Cape Town on New Year’s Eve and will train at Newlands on New Year’s Day.

Mark Boucher says he has 'no clue' whether Faf du Plessis is poised for Test retirement

Head coach believes ‘under pressure’ captain should take confidence from spending time in the middle during second innings

The pressure on Faf du Plessis is mounting•Stu Forster/Getty Images

Mark Boucher knows as much about Faf du Plessis’ future as a Test cricketer as we do, which is that du Plessis is under pressure. Asked directly if du Plessis is going to retire next week, Boucher said: “I’ve got no clue. He hasn’t said anything. I don’t think so.”Du Plessis has not crossed fifty in his last nine innings, he has not even crossed 40. He has had to deal with a major administrative crisis that he admitted weighed him down. It’s little wonder he needed a shoulder rub during his innings at St George’s Park.In what some are speculating could be his last Test innings, du Plessis faced 123 balls and spent two hours and 24 minutes, which, in other circumstances could be considered confidence-boosting. But when he was dismissed, the possibility of a four-day finish loomed, which is hardly the way a captain wants to take his team to the close of play. Given all the other challenges du Plessis is facing, it’s not unthinkable that it has all become too much, but Boucher hopes it hasn’t.”It’s easy for me to sit here and say yes I am happy with his state of mind. For me, his state of mind will be a lot better if he gets up there and scores runs,” Boucher said. “We all know that he is under pressure in the media and from a confidence point of view.”The positive for me is that he actually got out there, he gave himself a chance to have a look at the conditions and he looked like he got some good rhythm in a really tough situation. He got to face over 100 balls so he will sit back in the changeroom, look at the team situation and be disappointed in the performance today and in the Test match but I am sure he will take confidence from the fact that he got to spend time out there and face a few balls in the middle.”ALSO READ: Cricket is a finite game and du Plessis’ finish is in sightStill, South Africa seemed to lack a certain impetus which seemed to suggest there is something bigger brewing. Boucher indicated there are problems behind-the-scenes, although he did not elaborate on what they might be. “There might have been a couple of things that added to the lacklustre performance today. We can’t get too emotional about it. We’ve got to go out there and say we need a lot of hard work in the future and that’s what we’ve got to do,” Boucher said.Whether that relates to Kagiso Rabada’s suspension or the possibility of du Plessis’ impending exit is unclear. What is, is that the brief honeymoon period South Africa’s new management experienced at SuperSport Park is over and divorce proceedings are already being talked about in terms of the captain.South Africa are staring down their seventh Test defeat from the last eight they’ve played. Though they would have experienced similar when up against the Australian side of the early 2000s, then there was depth in the system; now the options are severely limited. South Africa only have one available bowler who can send the speedgun above 150kph for the Wanderers Test, Anrich Nortje, their experienced opening batsman, Dean Elgar, is coming off his worst calendar year in 2019 and is trying to hold the fort in an inexperienced top six and their best bowler is a containing spinner, Keshav Maharaj. Is this the lowest ebb since readmission? Boucher wouldn’t be drawn into that. “That’s a big call. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have been in teams where we’ve been pretty low. Here, we are still in the series. We are in a bad situation in this particular game but we are not out of the series yet,” he said.Instead, Boucher has taken it on himself to accept responsibility for the performances so far and to try and fix things as quickly as possible. “It’s easy to point fingers at this and that and our system. For me, there’s no excuses. I need to find a way to get it right in a short period of time,” Boucher said.”I look at this as a time to self-reflect. I’m looking at myself and saying, ‘how do I take responsibility for the performance of the team and how do I try and mentally and physically upskill these guys to make them better players in a short space of time?'”

Pundit says Tottenham could use Alejo Veliz in swap deal for £50m striker

A pundit says Tottenham could use 2023 signing Alejo Veliz in a swap deal to sign one £50 million striker for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Spurs looking for Harry Kane replacement

It's been a successful first full season without club-record goalscorer and Lilywhites legend Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich in a multi-million-pound blockbuster deal last summer.

Ex-Tottenham scout says Spurs could make major signing in £40 million star

His club could be forced to a deal with Daniel Levy.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 20, 2024

Many believed Kane's influence in the final third would be too hard for Postecoglou to replace, but the Australian has managed without him extremely well. Indeed, Spurs have implemented a brand of high-pressing, attack-minded football with goals coming from other sources.

Son Heung-min and Richarlison have scored a combined 26 between them in all competitions this campaign, putting Spurs in firm contention for a top-four finish and potential Champions League qualification.

However, Postecoglou apparently doesn't plan to stick with the aforementioned duo. It is believed Tottenham are laying the groundwork to sign a new striker to fully replace Kane this summer, and they've been linked with a host of interesting options.

Abroad, the likes of Union St-Gilloise sensation Mohamed Amoura and Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez are rumoured to be attracting interest from Spurs. Closer to home, Brentford striker Ivan Toney, Newcastle United star Alexander Isak and Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke are other possible targets.

Brentford's Ivan Toney

Of course, as Spurs look to bolster other key areas of the squad, whilst looking to abide by PSR rules, they'll have to weigh their next steps in pursuit of a new forward man pretty carefully.

Top goalscorers are in high demand and will likely cost a pretty penny, meaning chairman Daniel Levy and the recruitment team could have to be cunning in their dealings with rival clubs.

Using makeweights in potential part-exchange bids could be a fruitful avenue for Tottenham to go down, and pundit John Wenham has theorised that Veliz may well be a candidate to go the other way.

Pundit says Tottenham could use Veliz in swap deal for Solanke

The Argentine starlet was signed by Postecoglou from Rosario Central last summer. Tottenham have since been careful in nurturing his development into the first team, sending him out on loan to Sevilla for the second half of this season.

Unfortunately for him, game time in Spain has been hard to come by, which will arguably frustrate those in north London but also bring questions as to why. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham has claimed that Veliz could be used in a Spurs swap deal to sign Solanke.

“An interesting angle with Veliz’s link to Bournemouth is Tottenham’s interest in Solanke,” Wenham said.

“I think he would be a brilliant signing for Spurs, and he is a player who ticks a lot of boxes. Whether some sort of deal can be worked out where Veliz is used as part of a deal to bring Solanke to Tottenham, I think that is possible.”

The £50 million Solanke has enjoyed a phenomenal season, bagging 17 goals and three assists in the top flight alone, so there will likely be a growing clamour for his services.

Leeds hit the jackpot with £5m Bielsa signing who’s now worth 4x more

Leeds United will really be worrying now that this isn't their year to immediately return to the Premier League, with another disappointing result in the Championship last time out against Blackburn Rovers.

The 1-0 loss means Daniel Farke's once-confident Whites are without a win in their last three second-tier matches, Sammie Szmodics' late strike silencing a shell-shocked Elland Road.

It's not as if Leeds have been leaking goals for fun however in this sticky patch of form, with Leeds' number one goalkeeper Illan Meslier still boasting the most clean sheets in the division as a minor plus – amassing 19 from 40 appearances in-between the sticks.

Only costing £5m to bring him into the building in 2020 after an initial loan spell, the permanent signing of the French shot-stopper continues to look like a smart bit of business when you glance at his transfer value four years on.

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Illan Meslier's time at Leeds

Often a scapegoat when Leeds perform poorly, with the lofty 6 foot 6 keeper even labelled as a "liability" last season when Leeds suffered relegation by football journalist David Kent, Meslier deserves some praise based on his campaign to date and his past exploits in the Championship.

In the second tier alone over his five-year Whites stay, Meslier has accumulated 26 clean sheets from 50 appearances. There will be question marks about his ability in the top flight to answer for however if Leeds do seal promotion, with the 24-year-old only keeping 21 clean sheets from 107 games at that level.

Still, Leeds would much rather have Meslier in the net now than past figures such as Kiko Casilla with the Frenchman keeping a first-team spot in West Yorkshire ever since Marcelo Bielsa gambled on the young keeper during his celebrated tenure at Elland Road.

Meslier would keep seven clean sheets from ten appearances during the 2019/20 campaign that saw Bielsa guide the Whites to the Championship title, drafted in and performing exceptionally well under pressure.

Leeds were rinsed dry by Bielsa signing who earned double Gnonto’s wages

If Leeds decide to cash in on their former Lorient keeper down the line having lost patience with his sometimes shaky performances, they would make a generous profit on the £5m they originally purchased him for.

Meslier's transfer value in 2024

According to Football Transfers, Meslier is now worth in the region of €24.2m (£20.7m) for his stuttering promotion hopefuls.

That makes the ex-Lorient goalkeeper the most valued asset in the Leeds squad currently, worth around £5m more than Crysencio Summerville – even after the Dutchman's standout campaign to date – who has a €17.9m (£15.3m) price-tag next to his head.

Leeds' most valuable players – 2023/24

1. Illan Meslier

€24.2m (£20.6m)

2. Ethan Ampadu

€23.9m (£20.4m)

3. Wilfried Gnonto

4. Archie Gray

€19.8m (£16.9m)

5. Crysencio Summerville

€17.9m (£15.3m)

Ethan Ampadu, Wilfried Gnonto and Archie Gray all also fall behind Meslier's increased value, with the 24-year-old more focused on picking up clean sheets between now and the close this season – away from his transfer worth – to play his part in Leeds winning promotion.

illan-meslier-leeds-united-transfer-value-rise

Meslier will hope if Leeds do win promotion that he can answer to his nay-sayers by establishing himself as a trusted top-flight goalkeeper, with a bumper move away from Elland Road always on the cards if he feels the time is right to leave as well.

'Indian cricket has lost a real champion' – Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar, Milind Rege and Chandu Borde pay tribute to Bapu Nadkarni

In a heartfelt tribute to Bapu Nadkarni, who died on Friday aged 86, Sunil Gavaskar has hailed the former India allrounder’s attitude and cricketing acumen. Gavaskar was in Rajkot, as part of the commentators’ panel for the India-Australia ODI, when he heard the news of Nadkarni’s death.”He came as assistant manager for quite a number of our tours,” Gavaskar said. “He was very encouraging. His favourite term from where we all learnt from was ‘ (hang in there)’. He was gritty despite playing in the days when gloves and thigh pads were not very good, not much protective equipment as you would get hit, but still hang in there as he believed in . You are playing for India. That thing we learnt from him. “Every time he was on a tour he was very very helpful in terms of strategy. At lunch time or tea time, he would say ‘try this’, if you were a fielding captain. He would tell, ‘bring this bowler, or ask this bowler to bowl around the wicket.’ He was fantastic. Indian cricket has lost a real champion.”Gavaskar also recalled Nadkarni’s role in getting Sandeep Patil to bat in India’s second innings in Sydney in 1981, after he had retired hurt following a blow to the head from a Len Pascoe bouncer in the first innings. Patil went on to score 174 in the next Test match in Adelaide.”He [Nadkarni] was the one who kept urging Sandeep that ‘it doesn’t matter, you are here and you should go out and bat again.’ Bapuji was the assistant manager on the tour. It was only because of him that Sandeep went on to score that 174 in the next Test match because Bapuji was constantly there with him.”Bapu Nadkarni with fellow Mumbai and India stalwarts Dilip Vengsarkar and Ajit Wadekar•Getty Images & Hindustan Times

Milind Rege, the former Mumbai captain, said Nadkarni was a true allrounder.”Bapu Nadkarni was a great allrounder of Indian cricket and definitely a pillar of Mumbai cricket,” Rege said. “He didn’t get the accolades he deserved. He was one of the lead spinners and then would bat at No. 5 for Mumbai.”Rege reckoned that Nadkarni’s figures of 32-27-5-0 in his famous spell against England in Chennai would never be eclipsed. “Records are meant to be broken, but 21 overs and 5 balls without giving a run will never ever beaten by anybody.”Rege would call Nadkarni ‘Bapu ‘, as a mark of respect. Rege, along with his friend and teammate Gavaskar, learned a valuable lesson from Nadkarni, a characteristic Mumbai cricket is often associated with. “The thing that applies to Mumbai cricket, he would be right at the top. He was not a stylish player at all. With that stance he had, he managed to score important runs including the 283 not out against Delhi in the 1960-61 Ranji Trophy semifinals. He just would not give anything away, he was that .”Off the field, Nadkarni was a soft-spoken man, known to be particular about details. “Bapu was a lovely person,” Rege said. “The gentleman cricketer. Sunil and I played with Bapu when we were 17. He was among the Mumbai greats who nurtured us. He had a great sense of humour. And he could take a joke on himself and laugh it away.”Bapu Nadkarni (fifth from left) during a corporate tour of Pakistan in 1961•SD Rege/ACC Ltd

Chandu Borde, one of India’s leading lights in the 1960s, presented an example of Nadkarni supporting him at what he called a “crucial” time in his career. “It was one of the early Tests of my career,” Borde said. “I do not recollect exactly which one, but it was in Calcutta. I got a telegram from Pune (Borde’s home). It was to inform me that my relative Dayanand, who had played a big role in my cricket during my young days, had passed away in an accident.”Bapu hid the telegram under the pillow while I was batting. Later when I read the telegram I confronted Bapu: “What is this Bapu? Why did you this?” Bapu calmly told me he did not want me to be distracted. It was a crucial match for me. Till then my performances were not exciting or big. This was a crucial innings for me and Bapu did not want me to be disturbed.”Nadkarni, Borde said, always put the team first. “He was, what we in Marathi say an , one who had only friends and no enemies. Bapu was a very good team man, always appreciating his teammates’ performances.”According to Borde, Nadkarni’s upbringing and his family’s interest in sports was a major factor in his open personality. Borde recounted that Nadkarni was good at more than one sport, having played badminton at a high level. As for his cricket: “He was a very useful man to the team, a great contributor, stayed long at the wicket, was a good close-in fielder, and was a very accurate left-arm spinner.”
