Man Utd eyeing ‘amazing’ Ten Hag replacement who could revive Mount

Even if Manchester United had beaten Burnley 1-0 in Premier League action, the pressure still wouldn't have been off Erik ten Hag's shoulders.

The Clarets drawing 1-1 in the end at Old Trafford courtesy of a last-gasp penalty kick just adds more fuel to the fire for those who want the Dutchman to be relieved from his duties at the end of the campaign, with a whole host of names being lined up to now replace the ex-Ajax manager.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the powers that be at the Theatre of Dreams could move in a different direction to lead Man United into a potentially more successful new era.

Man United manager news

Even with Ten Hag still clinging onto his job post for the time being, that hasn't stopped the rumour mill at Old Trafford from going into overdrive speculating who could eventually be the unpopular 54-year-old's successor.

Current Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic was rumoured to be in the running to oust the Dutchman according to a report from TEAMtalk, whilst further rumours suggested Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi was also being talked up to come in after the season is over and done with.

Yet, the new 'favourite' – according to the Guardian – is surprisingly England manager Gareth Southgate.

Who could benefit from Southgate's appointment?

This is a move that would surely be welcomed by ex-Chelsea man Mason Mount who has starred under the former Middlesbrough boss' watchful eye on the international stage in the past.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw also wouldn't object to the 53-year-old walking through the door either, as Southgate potentially leaves England behind to return back to the firing line of club football.

Mount was given his senior England debut by Southgate back in 2019, the-then 20-year-old attacking midfielder with the world at his feet after exploding into life at Chelsea.

Now 25, he has since gone on to gain 36 caps for his country, picking up five goals and five assists along the way before being turned away from the England picture in the midst of his Blues career falling by the wayside and a turbulent move to Man United transpiring.

Mount will want to recapture his Chelsea best at Old Trafford, having only made 13 Premier League appearances this season to date under Ten Hag with recurring injury issues stopping him in his tracks.

Southgate could well be the manager Mount desires to put an arm around him to get more out of the forgotten number seven, who has shone brightly in patches this season when fit.

Mount's strike against Brentford back in March found the back of the net despite the ex-Blues midfielder only being on the pitch for ten minutes, breaking his Red Devils duck in the process.

Deployed down the left wing during this impactful cameo from the bench, Mount would benefit from an extended run in the United XI in a more central spot and Southgate could gift him that based on his preference for where he slots the 25-year-old into his past England sides.

The current Three Lions boss – who was praised as being "amazing" by Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham recently – has only ever played Mount down the flanks twice during his 36 caps, with all of his goal contributions coming from a more central position.

It would be an almighty risk appointing Southgate based on his previous managerial record at Middlesbrough (seen in the table above) but the appointment could work wonders for the English personnel already at the Theatre of Dreams who will want to run through brick walls for the 53-year-old at club level if he is seen as the correct fit after ten Hag.

Shoaib Malik whacks fifty as Peshawar Zalmi win

There was a lot of batting firepower on show after rain curtailed the game to 15-overs a side

The Report by Peter Della Penna05-Mar-2020

Shoaib Malik top scored for Peshawar Zalmi•PCB

The ageless Shoaib Malik shows no signs of slowing down, notching his 60th T20 half-century and doing so at a pace of two runs per ball to set the tone for a resounding 30-run win for Peshawar Zalmi over Quetta Gladiators in Darren Sammy’s first match in charge as head coach of Zalmi after stepping down as captain. In a match that was reduced to 15 overs following a 90-minute delay, Zalmi were sent in by Sarfaraz Ahmed at the toss, but Gladiators bowling unit could not back up their captain’s decision. They were also affected by an injury to Naseem Shah, who conceded just six runs across the first and third overs but walked off the field with a leg injury after the fourth over and could not complete his quota. While Shah went for three per over, nobody else in the Gladiators lineup went for less than 11 per over.Kamran Akmal started to rev up the Zalmi innings in the fifth over, hammering Mohammad Hasnain for back-to-back sixes over backward square and long-on. Though he fell attempting a third over midwicket to give Hasnain the first of his four expensive scalps, Malik and Haider Ali were relentless in attacking during their 54-run third-wicket stand across the next 30 balls. Despite being six wickets down with nine balls left, Zalmi managed to add a further 27 runs thanks to some lusty hitting from Lewis Gregory as Tymal Mills could not contain with his changes of pace.Jason Roy and Shane Watson got the Gladiators off to a fiery start in their reply, but the Gladiators lost momentum after Watson fell driving Hasan Ali to extra cover in the fifth to end a 45-run opening stand. New Zalmi captain Wahab Riaz was on a hat-trick in the 11th over after dismissing Ahmed Shehzad and Ben Cutting, the latter wicket effectively snuffing out the Gladiators last genuine threat after he had clattered two sixes in his first six balls at the crease. Riaz struck once more in the 13th to bowl Sarfaraz Ahmed, capping off his haul to help cement his first win since taking over the captaincy duties from Sammy.Turning pointWatson’s dismissal itself wasn’t necessarily the turning point, but more so Shehzad’s lack of aggression after replacing him at the crease at No. 3. Shehzad scored four runs off his first eight deliveries, putting pressure on Roy to take more risks. Roy fell attempting a slog sweep to Yasir Shah’s legspin to end the eighth for 45. Shehzad’s lack of efficiency allowed pressure to mount further before Riaz struck to remove him for 10 off 17 balls, skying a heave over cover before Cutting fell next ball slamming Riaz flat to deep midwicket. Shehzad’s go slow meant Gladiators needed 72 off the last 26 balls, far too steep a rate for them to come back.Star of the dayMalik was his typical efficient self. He scored off his first eight deliveries and only had a total of five dot balls before his wicket became the sixth. Otherwise, he rarely let the bowlers breathe. Just when it looked like a door might be cracked open for the Gladiators to reel back the Zalmi run rate following the wicket of Ali in the 10th, Malik made sure momentum stayed with Zalmi by driving Sohail Khan over mid-off, then pulling him through midwicket for another four. He was dropped next ball skying a drive to Nawaz at cover sweeper on 36, but continued to press on until crossing his fifty off 25 balls. The big missRoughly five minutes was lost when the third umpire was keeping everyone on the edge of their seats waiting to find out whether or not Riaz had any part of his foot behind the line on the delivery he bowled to get Cutting out. While it was very tight, leagues might want to consider putting a time limit on the amount of time it takes to come to a decision on reviews in order to speed up play because the umpire could have taken all day and still not come to a conclusive decision.Where the teams standZalmi move up into a tie for second place with Islamabad United on seven points, though United have a better net run rate. Gladiators are tied for fourth place with Karachi Kings on six points, though Gladiators are technically fifth due to an inferior net run rate.

Newcastle hit the jackpot selling "unbelievable" talent for 1264% profit

Newcastle United's dealings in the transfer market under Mike Ashley were questionable, to say the least, with the club either not spending any money at all or wasting it on players who weren't up to the level required.

The Magpies spent nearly £100m during the 2015/16 season, in an attempt to be competitive in the Premier League, with Ashley finally showing signings of splashing the cash.

Players such as Georginio Wijnaldum and Jonjo Shelvey proved to be quality additions, but they were a rarity with the vast majority of additions failing to provide any sort of value for their hefty fees.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Florian Thauvin and Henri Saivet both arrived on Tyneside during the same summer, but only managed a combined 24 appearances during their respective spells at St James' Park.

The club's erratic spending saw the Magpies needing to offload players the following summer to balance the books, with one player departing Newcastle for a huge fee – in a deal that proved to be excellent business by owner Ashley.

Moussa Sissoko's stats at Newcastle United

During the January transfer window of 2013, Newcastle signed midfielder Moussa Sissoko from French side Toulouse for a fee in the region of just £2.2m.

He would make an immediate impact on Tyneside, scoring three times in his first 13 Premier League appearances during the second half of the 2012/13 season.

Sissoko would be a key player in Newcastle's midfield over the next couple of seasons, featuring 69 times in the league over the next two seasons, scoring seven times as he helped maintain the club's Premier League status.

However, his consistent performances during the 2015/16 season would catch the eye of multiple other Premier League sides, with the Frenchman in line for a big-money move.

He also featured for his nation at Euro 2016, with his call-up for the host nation only further driving his price tag up ahead of the transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton battled out for his signature, with the London club winning the race, paying £30m to take Sissoko to White Hart Lane.

The midfielder's move saw the club make a 1264% profit on the initial £2.2m they spent to sign him in 2013 – a brilliant deal for all parties.

Moussa Sissoko's market value in 2024

Eight years on from his departure from St James' Park, the "unbelievable" midfielder, as described by journalist Ricky Sacks, is still playing, featuring 24 times for FC Nantes in Ligue 1 during the 2023/24 season.

However, the 34-year-old's market value has rapidly decreased, with the Frenchman only valued at £1m, as per Transfermarkt.

Former Tottenham player Moussa Sissoko.

His subsequent value is now lower than current Newcastle full-back Matt Targett, who is still valued at £8.6m, despite not featuring for Eddie Howe since the start of October.

Although Sissoko was a hit at St James', he's failed to replicate his form elsewhere, only managing to find the net on two occasions during his latest stint in his homeland.

His £30m deal certainly helped the club during their tough years off the pitch, with the club able to receive the highest fee possible whilst his value was at its peak before rapidly declining since his transfer in 2016.

Ottis Gibson urges Mashrafe Mortaza to retire from international cricket

The Bangladesh bowling coach doesn’t see Mortaza in head coach Domingo’s plans for the 2023 World Cup

Mohammad Isam18-May-2020

AFP

Bangladesh bowling coach Ottis Gibson has urged Mashrafe Mortaza to retire from international cricket as he doesn’t see the bowler in head coach Russell Domingo’s plans for the 2023 World Cup. Mortaza, who stepped down from captaincy during Bangladesh’s last home series, against Zimbabwe in February, hasn’t made any announcements about retirement despite being constantly questioned about it since December 2018.Gibson, who joined Bangladesh in January this year, said that Domingo has to look at several younger bowlers to build a team in the next three years, which would mean having to look beyond Mortaza. Gibson suggested that Mortaza, Bangladesh’s leading ODI wicket-taker, can advise the young fast bowlers in a different capacity.”I think he has had an outstanding international career,” Gibson told the Bengali daily on Monday. “He has done himself and his country proud. With the next World Cup in 2023, any international coach will now start to build a team. I am quite sure that’s what Russell will be thinking. So he would want to see players like young Hasan Mahmud, [Mohammad] Saifuddin, Shafiul [Islam] and Ebadot [Hossain]. We haven’t seen Ebadot in white-ball cricket yet. There’s Taskin [Ahmed] and Khaled [Ahmed] gets fit again. We have Hasan and [Mehedi Hasan] Rana. So there’s a lot of young cricketers in the country.”I think if Russell is now trying to build a team for the future, then I don’t know what part Mashrafe will have to play in that. Perhaps now is his time, with all that’s going on in the world, to move on. He can find other ways to pass on his vast knowledge and experience to the young guys. I don’t think he has to be on the field to be able to pass on what he has learned over his career. He needs to find other ways to pass on that message.”This is the first time a coaching staff member has explicitly asked Mortaza to retire from ODIs, the only format he plays currently. Mortaza is currently on 269 international wickets from 218 matches. Despite his long absences due to mostly leg injuries in the first 10 years of his career, he has only missed five ODIs in the last five years, two of them to over-rate suspension. However, he only took one wicket in the 2019 World Cup, which brought into question his place in the team, notwithstanding his new role as a member of parliament after the 2019 general elections.Gibson said he is pinning his hopes on 20-year-old quick Mahmud who recently made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe, after impressing in domestic and A team competitions.”I have really been impressed with Ebadot who can clock 140kph,” Gibson said. “There’s Taskin who is still there. I have had some time to chat with him. He is still hungry to get involved. Khaled has been injured for a while.”Young Hasan Mahmud has really impressed me too. I have a lot of faith on him. He can really break through and become a top international Bangladeshi fast bowler. I have high hopes from him. He is very hungry to learn. He has a fantastic action that can only get better, so it will be interesting to see how he goes over the next few years.”Gibson, however, said the attitude towards pace bowling has to change in Bangladesh, if they are expected to do well at home or overseas. “The bowlers genuinely have a lot of skill but they lack in experience. They only get one spell in domestic cricket. Even if they pick two fast bowlers, the captain generally tends to go to the spinners if there’s a crisis. The fast bowlers never really get to bowl in pressure situations.”It is a very different story when we go abroad. We are relying on the fast bowlers to do the job away from home but they lack in experience in closing out games, even back home in domestic cricket. We must look at the way we play domestic cricket.”

India women's England tour cancellation 'not a case of neglect' – Shanta Rangaswamy

The situation was out of BCCI’s control, says Apex Council member

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jul-2020

Shanta Rangaswamy has given the BCCI the benefit of the doubt•Annesha Ghosh/ESPNcricinfo

The BCCI’s decision to pull the women’s national team out their England tour was “not a case of neglect”, former India captain and Apex Council member Shanta Rangaswamy said on Monday, arguing that there hadn’t been enough time to make arrangements. Rangaswamy said the situation was not in the BCCI’s control and that “even nature” – in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic – was conspiring against women’s cricket.”It is not a case of neglect. You need at least six weeks to be match fit and with the Covid-19 affecting most part of the country, is it possible to organise a training camp right away? Then you would also have 14-day quarantine in England,” she told PTI.India were scheduled to tour England for a bilateral limited-overs series in July-August this year. That couldn’t happen because of the pandemic, but the ECB had suggested tweaking it into a tri-series, also involving South Africa, tentatively in September. But it was cancelled after the BCCI opted to pull out.ALSO READ: No cricket, no selectors, no plans – what next for India women?Though the Indian board didn’t say anything officially, as reported by ESPNcricinfo, the withdrawal was primarily because of the worsening Covid-19 situation in India. The ECB, however, is understood to have been prepared to cover costs for India’s accommodation and travel, including a charter flight if required, as the English board has done for the West Indies and Pakistan men’s teams currently touring the UK.”There was just not enough time to make it happen. Covid-19 has hurt world cricket, more so women’s cricket,” Rangaswamy said. “We have gone back a couple of years after a record attendance for the T20 World Cup final at MCG in March. It is sad and an anti-climax.”It is unclear if concerns over players getting adequate pre-tour training played a part in the cancellation. The BCCI is expected to organise a biosecure training camp in Ahmedabad for the men’s team ahead of their tour of Australia in December, according to an report. With a women’s ODI World Cup scheduled in New Zealand in February-March, questions arise around whether the board has let go a chance for its women – especially ODI stalwarts Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, who haven’t played international cricket since early November last year – to get some much-needed game time under their belts. Then there is the Women’s T20 Challenge, usually played alongside the IPL. The rescheduled IPL this year is clashing with the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia, where at least three Indian players are expected to participate.”It looks like even nature is conspiring against women’s cricket,” Rangaswamy said. “Last year, a third team was added to the IPL Women’s Challenge, this year it was supposed to be four. Now the shift of venue. More importantly, it is clashing with the Women’s Big Bash, which was already scheduled. Let’s see what the IPL Governing Council decides.”Going to England was more important than the IPL exhibition games. England tour would have been ideal preparation for the World Cup.”With no selectors in place and no tours lined-up, women’s cricket in India is facing uncertainty after the gains over the last three years, which included runners-up finishes at the 50-over World Cup in 2017 and then at the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Rangaswamy, however, wanted to give the BCCI the benefit of the doubt on the matter.”The post-Covid-19 scenario will be a testimony to their [BCCI’s] commitment on women’s cricket,” she said. “People doubting BCCI’s intentions will have to wait for things to be normal before passing their judgement. The situation was not in their control on this occasion. The late announcement on the men’s T20 World Cup postponement has also given the BCCI little time to prepare for the IPL.”
