Southampton are "very interested" in signing new 24 y/o winger this summer

Southampton are "very interested" in signing a 24-year-old ace in the summer transfer window, with the player seen as a "very popular" target by the club.

Southampton playoff final & transfer news

Russell Martin and his players are preparing for their biggest game of the season, with Leeds United standing between them and a place in the Premier League next term. On Sunday afternoon, the Saints take on the Whites in the Championship playoff final at Wembley, with the importance of the game impossible to downplay.

Once the dust has settled after the weekend action, it will be clear to see what calibre of player Southampton will be able to sign this summer, depending on which division they are playing in when the 2024/25 campaign gets underway.

One player who has been integral to Saints' excellence this season is Flynn Downes, who has flourished on loan from West Ham throughout the campaign. It is believed that the south coast club are pushing to sign the 25-year-old on a permanent basis at the end of the season, with Martin saying of him: "He is a big player for us; he is important. His aggression, his athleticism, his power, his composure, his courage to receive the ball but we have a lot really really good players."

Southampton are also reportedly interested in signing Rangers attacker Kemar Roofe, with the Englishman expected to leave Ibrox in the coming weeks, ahead of his contract expiring this summer. On the flip side, Che Adams looks to be certain to leave St Mary's before next season gets underway.

Southampton "very interested" in Elias Saad

Taking to X, journalist Dominik Schneider claimed that Southampton want to sign St. Pauli winger Elias Saad this summer, seeing him as a "very popular" option to come in and bolster Martin's squad:

Saad could be a strong addition by the Saints once this season reaches its conclusion, even though not a huge amount is known about him.

The 24-year-old has scored seven goals in the 2. Bundesliga this season, highlighting his ability to deliver end product from his attacking role. He has also averaged 1.2 tackles per game in the competition, showing that he can also contribute positively in a defensive sense.

Saad is a one-cap Tunisia international, which further outlines the pedigree that he possesses, and an overall tally of 60 career goals at club level, coming from a total of 147 appearances, is also a positive sign.

Southampton hit gold on “selfless” star who's worth more than Downes

Southampton have this midfield star to thank for such a great season overall.

ByKelan Sarson May 20, 2024

Whether Southampton earn promotion to the Premier League could be significant to them signing the Tunisian or not, however, showing why victory over Leeds this weekend is so essential.

Celtic can move on from Kyogo & Idah by signing 6ft 2 "top striker"

The 2023/24 season may have only just come to a climax, yet there is simply no time to waste for Celtic in their preparations for next term, with the Scottish champions needing to get their recruitment on the money if they are to develop into a more competitive outfit on the continent.

At present, the burning issue appears to be nailing down a long-term solution in the centre-forward ranks, with speculation rife as to whether loan hero Adam Idah will return to Parkhead permanently this summer, following his impressive tally of nine goals in just 19 games in all competitions.

With the Irishman's parent club, Norwich City, believed to be playing hardball at present, the Old Firm giants may have to turn their attentions elsewhere sooner rather than later, particularly amid reports that Ange Postecoglou favourite, Kyogo Furuhashi, is being courted by clubs in his native Japan.

Having scored 54 goals in just 83 games under his former boss, the 29-year-old suffered a noticeable dip following Brendan Rodgers' arrival in the dugout, with his respectable, yet unspectacular return of 19 goals in 50 games this season sparking the need to find a suitable successor.

Celtic's search for a striker

With reports indicating that Kyogo could depart for around £10m this summer – and with Idah in line to return to Norwich for pre-season – the hunt to acquire a credible replacement will need to ramp up sooner rather than later.

Perhaps the obvious, standout candidate for the Hoops to help them move on from their current striking duo is Aberdeen sensation, Bojan Miovski, with the Macedonian marksman having long been linked with a move to Glasgow.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

As FotMob reported only last week, Rodgers' side are among the clubs who are interested in signing the 24-year-old ahead of next season, with the double winners said to be ahead of rivals Rangers in the battle for his signature – albeit with the likes of Southampton, Bologna and Feyenoord also in the mix.

How Miovski compares to Idah and Kyogo

The 24-year-old – who still has two years left to run on his current deal at Pittodrie – would likely not come cheap himself amid claims made that even a £5m bid wouldn't cut it, yet the Dons hero has certainly warranted a sizeable asking price amid his prolific performances of late.

The figurehead of a struggling Aberdeen side over the last two seasons, the 6 foot 2 hotshot has plundered 44 goals in just 95 games in all competitions since his arrival from Hungarian side MTK in 2022.

That return is not far from the 53 goals which Kyogo has scored in that time, albeit while operating in a far more successful and front-foot side, while his 26 goals this season alone matches up with Idah's total career record at senior level – the 23-year-old scoring 17 goals in 115 games for the Canaries, as well as his nine for the Hoops.

Only a year older than Idah, Miovski would represent another potential long-term addition for Rodgers and co as the spearhead of the attack, with the 22-cap international having already caught the eye of Rodgers, who labelled him a "good player" following the Scottish Cup semi-final clash at Hampden.

With three goals in seven meetings against the champions – alongside four in nine against those at Ibrox – Miovski has certainly proven himself against the best in the division, hence why Livingston boss David Martindale previously claimed that the "top striker" could "walk into any team" in the league.

Also dubbed "one of the best players in Scotland" by writer Zach Lowy, the in-demand forward would certainly represent a shrewd addition for Rodgers and co, with the battle now on to see just who can get ahead in the race for his signature.

ECB considering cost-cutting move away from Lord's despite Australia boost

September white-ball series set to be confirmed but financial challenges remain

English cricket has received a significant boost with the news that Australia are set to confirm their limited-overs tour in September.Confirmation of the tour, which will see the sides play three ODIs and three T20Is, means England’s men’s team should be able to fulfil all 18 international fixtures which were scheduled ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the ECB should be able to avoid the bleakest financial predictions that were made ahead of the season.Significant challenges remain, however. The ECB management recently warned the first-class counties that the next broadcast deal could be worth up to 50% less than the current deal – due, in part, to less competition in the market – meaning a period of cost-cutting is inevitable.ESPNcricinfo understands that among the options being considered is a partial move away from Lord’s as an administrative base and a move away from Loughborough as a performance base. While it is understood that the ECB is given a relatively favourable rental agreement at Lord’s by the MCC, there is ongoing consideration towards moving to less expensive offices elsewhere.ALSO READ: England’s white-ball tour of India postponed until 2021This possibility has been considered previously. This time, however, there is not only a financial incentive but a growing view that a game intent on becoming more inclusive for all aspects of society might benefit from a move away from St John’s Wood, the suburb of London where Lord’s is situated, which is one of the most expensive and exclusive parts of the country.Thought will also be given to moving away from the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough. While the centre has outstanding facilities, there are suggestions it is largely replicating those offered at various other major grounds.Edgbaston, which is about to embark on the next stage of its redevelopment, is one location that is sure to be considered as an alternative for both the administrative and the performance set-ups. In the next few weeks, building work will begin at the ground on new residential and commercial premises which could easily be fitted as required by the ECB. Emirates Old Trafford is also likely to be considered. The ECB could move its offices away from Lord’s•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The most likely conclusion at this stage is that ECB could set up hubs in different areas of the country in order both to cut costs and to improve its relationships with the counties. While a complete move from London is unlikely, it does seem the ECB will follow other major companies – such as Channel 4, the BBC and HSBC – in moving away from the capital.A reduction in the headcount at the ECB, which has risen sharply in recent years, also appears inevitable. As part of a likely restructure, the pay of some executives could also be cut. While confirmation of the Australia tour will ease the ECB’s most immediate concerns, other scheduling issues remain. Most pertinently, there is ongoing discussion about a possible cut to the number of Tests played on the tour to India (from late January to late March) with suggestions it could be trimmed from five Tests to four or even three.England were originally scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is in India in September and October before returning for a five-Test series starting in January. Now, they will attempt to fit in as many of the limited-overs matches and Tests as possible in a window from late January to late March. At this stage, the tour is still scheduled to be staged in India, though there remains a strong possibility it will be moved to the UAE.There is also doubt about the viability of England’s limited-overs tour of South Africa, which had been pencilled in for December. The current Covid situation in South Africa suggests the tour would need to be staged behind closed doors in a biosecure bubble, which might prove both problematic logistically and prohibitively costly.Looking ahead to the 2021 English summer, the ECB is still waiting on confirmation over whether the World Test Championship final, which is planned for June, is to be postponed. In any event, it looks probable the Asia Cup, pushed back from September, will be held in June, which could see England’s fixture list hit as a consequence. England are due to host Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs from June, Pakistan (three T20Is, three ODIs) and India (five Tests). There are no immediate prospects of senior tours to either Pakistan or West Indies – the sides which have so far toured England in far-from-perfect circumstances this summer – though it appears there is some thought towards extending the next England tour of West Indies, in early 2022, from two Tests to three.

Sky Sports: Liverpool want to sign "talented" £12m player ahead of Man Utd

With the Arne Slot era now officially underway, Liverpool reportedly want to get their summer transfer window off to the perfect start by beating Manchester United to a future star.

Liverpool transfer news

It could be a busy summer for the Reds on all fronts, as Michael Edwards looks to take Liverpool up another level with Slot handed the almost impossible task of replacing Jurgen Klopp. The returning club chief may also need to work on convincing certain players to stay put, with exit links emerging for both Caoimhin Kelleher and Joe Gomez in what would be a frustrating double blow.

On the incoming front, meanwhile, impressive names such as Rodrygo and Aurelien Tchouameni have been mentioned, who have both just won the Champions League with Real Madrid, defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley. Away from Europe's current stars, however, the Reds have reportedly turned their attention towards a player for the future, who's certainly not short on admirers.

Aurelien Tchouameni

According to Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool now "want" to sign Assan Ouedraogo ahead of rivals Manchester United this summer as well as Aston Villa and Newcastle United. The 18-year-old reportedly has a release clause of just £12m which lasts until mid-June, with the race now open for his signature following Bayern Munich's decision to not pursue the young midfielder in the coming months.

Liverpool considering swoop for “unstoppable” £87m Nunez upgrade

This fearsome marksman has already scored 49 times under Slot.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 2, 2024

It's certainly a busy race for Ouedraogo's signature even without Bayern's interest though, with Aston Villa and Newcastle sitting alongside Liverpool and United when it comes to interested parties and some Premier League clubs having already presented their projects to the Schalke man ahead of potential summer moves.

Whether Liverpool and Edwards have made such a presentation remains to be seen, but given Ouedraogo's potential, it's a race they should be hopeful of winning in the coming months.

"Talented" Ouedraogo can partner Elliott

Liverpool's academy was on show more than ever during the Klopp era in his final season and Harvey Elliott is one of the players to have once played in the Reds' academy, before moving into the first team in a path that Ouedraogo could follow. The young German has starred in the 2.Bundesliga this season and represents a player who has the potential to form quite the partnership with Elliott at the heart of Slot's side.

Ouedraogo's been particularly impressive going forward in what is a trait that should slot straight into the current Liverpool side, especially as they look to help the likes of Darwin Nunez avoid a repeat of their disappointing form in front of goal at the end of the season.

Given the numbers, it's no surprise that Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig described Ouedraogo as "talented" on X, with Liverpool now keen to see that talent for themselves at Anfield this summer.

Jonny Bairstow still focused on Test recall after record-equalling fifty

Record-equalling innings cannot distract Bairstow from ambition to reclaim five-day berth

Matt Roller at Ageas Bowl01-Aug-2020Jonny Bairstow has reiterated his desire to play Tests and said that he has never felt any temptation to put all of his focus on white-ball cricket after hitting 82 off 41 balls in the second ODI against Ireland.Bairstow continued his extraordinary run of 50-over form in an England shirt on Saturday, equalling the record for England’s fastest ODI half-century when he whacked the 21st ball of his innings over long-off for six. In the course of his day’s work, he also passed 3000 ODI runs, equalling Joe Root’s England record in doing so in his 72nd innings.Since he was handed a chance to open with Jason Roy following Alex Hales’ post-Bristol omission in September 2017, Bairstow has averaged 50.36 and scored at 6.72 runs per over in ODI cricket, a 49-innings stretch which includes nine 100s and seven 50s. His record against spin in that time is particularly belligerent: he scores at 7.33 runs per over against it, averaging 82.2 runs per dismissal. And yet coming into this series, Bairstow had stated his intention to use the three ODIs as the start of his “journey” to get back into Test-match contention.”[A Test recall] is my burning ambition but the only way I’m going to do that is to score runs, starting in this ODI series, [and] to keep well,” he told Sky. “I’m hopefully going back to Yorkshire to play two four-day games in between this and the T20s. So yeah, the journey to hopefully get back into contention for that starts here.”Bairstow has played only one Test since last summer’s Ashes series, making 1 and 9 in the Boxing Day Test at Centurion which Ollie Pope missed through illness. He had been left out of the side for the tour of New Zealand before Christmas, and was omitted from the squad that travelled to Sri Lanka immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic struck.Since then, he was part of England’s enlarged training group ahead of their series against West Indies, but transferred across to the white-ball bubble when it became clear that he would not make the XI for the first Test. He hopes to play a handful of Willis Trophy games for Yorkshire before England’s planned white-ball series against Australia in September, and said on Saturday that he was desperate to put himself “back in the shop window” for selection.Jonny Bairstow bludgeons a pull shot•Getty Images

“I’ve worked hard with my Test and red-ball stuff leading into the camp,” he said. “I’m here playing white-ball cricket. Obviously you’re really pleased for the guys that have gone and won that Test series after being 1-0 down. That takes a lot of guts, so it was great to see them win that series.ALSO READ: Bairstow’s belligerence guides England to 2-0 series win”I’ll be going back and playing for Yorkshire in the four-day comp. I’ll be trying my best – that’s all I can do to put myself back in the shop window to be selected in the Test squad again.”I’m concentrating on scoring runs, and I’ll try and get a lot of them here. Down the line, what happens, happens. I’ll go back to Yorkshire next week, and hopefully play Notts next week or the week after. I’m just concentrating on playing my cricket, not looking too far ahead.”Chasing a below-par 213 target on a used pitch, Bairstow flew out of the blocks on Saturday, hitting 14 fours and two sixes in an innings that showed him at somewhere near his best. He admitted that he felt some additional responsibility in the absence of Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler from the usual ODI batting line-up, but said that was not something that fazed him.”When you’re chasing slightly lower scores on a pitch that might not be coming on as much, I think it can be slightly tricky, depending on how the start is,” he said. “The way Jason [Roy] and I have gone about it previously has been to play as naturally as possible – we’ve gone about it in a way that we’d chase a larger score.”I’d have liked to have gone on and seen it home, but the manner we’re playing in, we want to keep going with that. You want to be out there in the middle, and hopefully thriving on the pressure and the responsibility. You want to be setting the standard for the guys that are coming into the side… hopefully that feeds down into the guys that are playing their first few games.”There are times when you can’t help but wonder whether Bairstow would make life easier for himself if he gave up his Test dream and instead focused on securing his status as one of the best white-ball batsmen in the world, thrashing boundaries in T20 leagues and putting his name alongside Buttler and Eoin Morgan as one of England’s modern one-day greats. Is it something that has ever crossed his mind, you might wonder? “No, to be quite honest with you,” was his snappy reply.
