World No.1 rankings face-off enlivens England, Australia dead-rubber

England will usurp their rivals at the top of the pile if they can complete 3-0 clean sweep

Andrew Miller07-Sep-2020Big PictureBlink and you miss it in the frantic world of T20. Opportunity has knocked twice for Australia in this series – with a thumping great battering ram in the series opener on Friday, and with a polite rap of enquiry in the closing moments two days later. And twice England have peered over the ramparts and drawn up the drawbridge, to take a 2-0 series lead with one to play, and leave their opponents somewhat non-plussed in their first competitive outing since March. But this third outing, however, is a dead rubber with more riding on it than might ordinarily be the case. Next month’s T20 World Cup may be on the back burner, and so this is not the opportunity for fine-tuning for which it had originally been earmarked, but the ancient annals of Anglo-Australian rivalry love a chance for some bragging rights to be put up for grabs. And so it will prove on Tuesday, where England know they will not be satisfied simply to leave with the series trophy in their grasp. The World No.1 ranking is the true objective for Eoin Morgan’s men, an accolade which passed temporarily to them after their six-wicket win on Sunday, but which will be snatched back by Australia if they can end their series on a high.It may be a broadly meaningless bauble controlled by a mysterious ICC algorithm, but the allure of being top dogs is more than merely cosmetic for the hosts. Just as was the case in their four-year journey to becoming the 50-over World Champions, the No.1 spot was a rite of passage that Morgan, and the then-coach Trevor Bayliss, used almost as a stress test.England, they realised, needed to know the full texture of expectation, for until they had learned what it meant to be a team with a target on their back, they could not be ready for the crunch moments that, sure enough, would await them come the biggest stage of all.So this contest is sure to matter, in the same way that England’s whitewash-sealing win at Old Trafford in 2018 mattered. Right up until the moment that Jos Buttler sealed an excruciating one-wicket win with a brilliant unbeaten 110, Australia had looked set to secure a consolation victory that would have been out of kilter with the fare that had gone before it.Buttler, however, will not be present for this contest. He has been granted leave to visit his family, having excelled in the opening two games, and Morgan too cannot be a complete shoo-in either, having suffered a very awkward-looking finger dislocation in the field on Sunday – not that it prevented him from batting, albeit briefly, in the run-chase.They may be a huge pair of personalities to lose from their starting line-up, but England will not mind too much if they are forced to dig a touch deeper and rely on less prominent members of their line-up to front up with the crucial contributions. For as Australia’s own struggles to find a serviceable middle order have shown, sometimes the hardest part of T20 squad-building is giving meaningful opportunities to the men outside of the prime positions. If, in the circumstances, the No.1 ranking has to be delivered by the likes of Tom Banton, Sam Billings (and of course the ubiquitous Dawid Malan), then England will consider this series a job very well done. Especially as you can be sure, in spite of the errors that have derailed them up to this point, Australia will not be relinquishing their hold without a fight.Dawid Malan reverse-sweeps•AFP

Form guide(last five completed matches)
England WWLWW
Australia LLWLWIn the spotlightThere’s no escaping the furious case for retention that Dawid Malan is currently making. Like Jonny Bairstow’s full-frontal assault on England’s established ODI line-up three years ago, there are only so many times you can ask a player to prove himself before, well, he has proved himself. And right now, with 661 runs at 50.84 in his 15 T20I appearances, including seven fifties and a 48-ball hundred, Malan is producing the sorts of numbers that stop arguments in their tracks. Yes, he does have a habit of pootling along to a run-a-ball 10 before finding his range in any given innings, but on balance, the rewards from that early lack of risk are worth factoring in. No-one complained too loudly when Chris Gayle took the scenic route to destruction, did they?On the face of it, Aaron Finch has done little wrong in his two innings to date. With a total of 86 runs from 65 balls, the skipper is the obvious form man in the Aussie ranks, and the likeliest rock of resistance as they seek the consolation victory that will defend their No.1 status. And yet, while the timing of his strokes gives no cause for complaint, the timing of his dismissals has twice had a discombobulating effect on the rest of Australia’s batting. On each occasion he’s fallen just after the halfway mark of the innings, and such is the frailty in that under-tested middle order, it’s offered England’s bowlers priceless traction. And yet, perhaps Finch’s efforts have merely been paling compared to the onslaughts of his counterpart. Buttler’s efforts so far have been transcendent, but he won’t be here this time around. More of the same may yet be sufficient.Team newsButtler’s absence creates a wave of welcome upheaval in England’s ranks, given how many top-order batsman are competing for so few spots. Malan’s No.3 berth would appear to be locked in for the time being, so Tom Banton is the obvious man to resume his opener’s role alongside Jonny Bairstow. Sam Billings is the first-choice beneficiary from the hole that creates in the middle order. It remains to be seen whether Eoin Morgan bows to the finger that he dislocated in the second match – notwithstanding the chance to go to No.1, it might be prudent. Moeen Ali could yet be captain, Sam Curran and Joe Denly could yet get recalls.England (possible) 1 Tom Banton, 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Sam Billings, 5 Moeen Ali (capt), 6 Sam Curran / Joe Denly, 7 Tom Curran, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Jofra Archer, 11 Mark WoodIf Australia could splice their lower-order batting from the second match to their top-order saunter in the first, they be very handily placed in this series. As it is, they’re 2-0 down and with no obvious areas in which to improve their batting fortunes. Their top four of Warner, Finch, Smith and Maxwell is surely locked in, while Marcus Stoinis’s 35 on Sunday was his highest T20I score, so this would be an odd moment for the selectors to lose faith in what he can offer. Alex Carey, by contrast, has scored three runs from 12 balls in the series so far, but of the men on the bench, Matthew Wade hasn’t kept wicket for three years, while Josh Philippe is perhaps a touch too raw at this stage. The likelier change is a rotation in the fast-bowling department, with Josh Hazlewood perhaps getting an outing before the ODIs.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Steven Smith, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Kane Richardson / Josh Hazlewood, 11 Adam ZampaPitch and conditionsThe same surface will be used for the third match running, which Malan suggested was partly in anticipation of low, spinning conditions in Asia this winter – the IPL as much as the tour of India, in the cases of players on both sides. The absent Buttler transcended those conditions in both games, but besides him, fluent run-scoring has been hard to come by. The weather is set to be dry, and for a day-night game in September, that’s all you can ask for.Stats and Trivia Chris Jordan needs two wickets to draw level with Broad on 65 T20I wickets, the most for England in the format. Since 2017, Australia have won just one of their last 11 away white-ball fixtures against England, a run that includes eight ODIs and three T20Is. That victory came in the World Cup group match at Lord’s last year.Quotes”We certainly take a lot of pride on being the No.1-ranked team, it’s a great feeling, it’s nice walking out knowing that. That will spur us on but really we just want to win whatever game is in front of us and that’s what contributes to being No. 1.”
“The man that matters is Eoin Morgan, and if he’s happy with the way I’m approaching it, then that’s good enough for me at the moment. That doesn’t mean I’m not trying to improve on that – I always want to improve, so I can keep pushing a case to be in the starting XI.”.”

Bad news for Dessers: Rangers plotting bid for Scotland international

Glasgow Rangers ended their 2023/24 campaign in disappointing fashion last month as they were beaten in the final of the SFA Cup at Hampden Park.

A 90th-minute goal from Adam Idah won the tournament for their Glasgow rivals and that capped off a poor month for Philippe Clement and his team, as they had already watched Celtic lift the Scottish Premiership title.

Head of recruitment Nils Koppen and the Belgian head coach have reacted to that disappointment by making some early moves ahead of the summer transfer window officially opening for business on Friday.

Oscar Cortes has been brought in for a second loan spell from Lens, with an obligation to make the deal permanent next summer, left-back Jefte has joined from Brazilian side Fluminense, and centre-back Clinton Nsiala will officially join the club at the start of next month when his contract with AC Milan comes to an end.

Lens forward Oscar Cortes.

The Gers are also reportedly in pole position to land Germany U20 international Yusuf Kabadayi from Bayern Munich on a permanent deal, to bolster their options on the flank.

They do not seem to be satisfied with that, though, as the Scottish giants are also said to be in the running to add a new number nine to their squad.

Rangers' interest in Euro 2024 centre-forward

According to the Daily Record, the Light Blues are one of the teams lining up a potential swoop to sign Bristol City centre-forward Tommy Conway.

The report claims that Koppen is plotting an offer to sign the Scotland international, who is in the squad for Euro 2024 and could feature against Germany on Friday, to bolster Clement's attacking options.

It states that Scottish rivals Celtic are also keen on the 21-year-old marksman and could also swoop in to sign him for a compensation fee of £300k next year.

Tommy Conway celebrates for Bristol City.

The outlet reveals that he has one year left to run on his contract at Ashton Gate and both Premiership sides would be able to sign him on a pre-contract agreement from next January onwards, and would only have to pay £300k if he runs his deal down.

Conway has been in talks over an extension with the English Championship side but the Daily Record claims that those discussions have not had a positive conclusion for the club.

Meanwhile, the Bristol Post reports that the Robins are now open to offers to cash in on the striker in the current transfer window, amid interest from Rangers, Celtic, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

This suggests that the door is open for the Light Blues to snap the young striker up ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, instead of having to wait until next year to bring him to Ibrox.

These updates on the club's interest in a deal to sign the Scotland international should come as bad news to Cyriel Dessers, as it could impact his game time in Glasgow.

Cyriel Dessers' debut season at Rangers in numbers

The Nigerian forward joined the Scottish giants on a permanent deal from Cremonese last summer after the Italian club were relegated from the Serie A.

Michael Beale brought him to Ibrox and the Belgian-born marksman ended the 2023/24 campaign with a return of 22 goals and nine assists in 54 appearances in all competitions.

Cyriel Dessers

More than 20 goals in a debut year in the country seems like a fantastic season on paper for the experienced attacker but it becomes less impressive when you dig deeper into his performances and how he achieved that tally.

Firstly, no Rangers player underperformed their xG (Expected Goals) by more than Dessers. He scored 16 Premiership goals from 21.72 xG – an outperformance of 5.72 goals.

As you can see in the table above, the 29-year-old dud missed a staggering 27 'big chances' – 18 more than anyone else in the squad – on his way to 16 league goals.

These statistics show that the striker, who was also dominated by opposition defenders in physical duels, was incredibly wasteful in front of goal and let his teammates down on a regular basis by not making the most of the high-quality opportunities that were created for him.

Why the Tommy Conway interest is bad news for Cyriel Dessers

The club's reported interest in Conway is bad news for the former Serie A marksman as the 21-year-old ace's form for Bristol City suggests that he could come in as an upgrade on the Gers dud.

His finishing ability in the Championship for the Robins indicates that the potential is there for him to be far more ruthless than Dessers in front of goal, which could then see him dropped to the bench or from the squad entirely.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

The Scotland international, who Gers supporters may now keep a close eye on during the European Championships this summer, completed 85% of his passes in the second tier and won 45% of his ground duels.

Whereas, Dessers completed 71% of his attempted passes in the Premiership and won just 29% of his battles on the deck, which suggests that the Bristol City star could come in and offer more in and out of possession outside of the final third.

As you can see in the table above, Conway also caught the eye with his efficient finishing as he scored ten goals from 9.25 xG, an overperformance of 0.75.

This suggests that the Scottish talent has the quality in front of goal to make the most of the chances that are created for him, which was not the case for Dessers this season as he significantly underperformed against his expected tally.

He could, in theory, score more than 16 that the ex-Cremonese number nine did for the Gers if the team can provide him with the high-quality chances that they created for the current Light Blues striker, due to the finishing quality Conway displayed in England.

After Nsiala: Rangers close in on new signing who'd thrive with Cantwell

ByDan Emery Jun 11, 2024

Therefore, Rangers being interested in the 6 foot 1 striker, who was once dubbed an "absolute hero" for Bristol City by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is bad news for the Nigeria international as it could spell the end of his time as the first-choice striker at Ibrox.

The statistics indicate that he could be an upgrade on Dessers if Clement and Koppen can sign the youngster ahead of Celtic and Wolves, which is why this could be a shrewd piece of business by the club – whether it happens this summer or next year for £300k.

Personal terms agreed: Spurs trying to sign "monster" £55m Son partner

The European Championships may have grabbed the footballing world's attention over the last week or so, but like the rest of the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur have a busy summer of transfers to prepare for.

The Lilywhites enjoyed a bumpy first season under Ange Postecoglou that ended in Europa League qualification, but if the Australian is going to succeed in taking the club back to the top, he'll need to have the best players at his disposal.

So, it's good news that, based on recent reports, he could soon have a new clinical number nine in his squad who could form a deadly partnership with Son Heung-min.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Transfers, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed personal terms with Brentford striker Ivan Toney ahead of a potential move.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

However, the report has also claimed that the Bees have turned down the Lilywhites' initial £40m bid and that while they value the Englishman at £65m, an offer of around £55m should be enough to seal the deal.

It won't be a cheap deal to complete, but given how impressive Toney's goalscoring record was before this season, it's probably one worth pursuing, especially as his link-up with Son has the potential to be brilliant.

serhou-guirassy-ivan-toney-tottenham-opinion

Why Toney would be a great teammate for Son

Now, the elephant in the room is Toney's record this season following his return from his eight-month football ban for betting offences.

In 17 appearances, the 28-year-old managed a reasonable if unspectacular return of just four goals and two assists, equating to a goal involvement on average every 2.8 games.

However, it would be incredibly unfair to judge him solely on those 17 games, considering the incredibly unusual circumstances that came before them, especially when, the season before, he managed to return 26 goals and assists in 35 games for the Bees and the campaign before that, it was 20 goals and assists in 37.

When looking at his output since winning promotion to the Premier League with Brentford as a whole, it becomes impossible to deny that the three-capped international is an excellent striker, and as such, he would help improve Postecoglou's attack in N17.

Specifically, though, his ability to finish chances would surely help club captain Son reach another level, as according to Understat, the South Korean underperformed his expected assists figure by 3.34.

Richarlison might have ended the campaign with a respectable tally of 12 goals and four assists in 31 games, but he has never managed to reach 20 goal involvements in a single season.

Aston Villa transfer target Ivan Toney in Premier League action for Brentford.

In contrast, the "unplayable" Brentford ace, as dubbed by Alan Shearer, has managed to do that twice in his last two full campaigns.

Therefore, while the Brazilian is a valuable player to have in the squad, he's never going to be the sort of nine who could help Son reach 15 plus assists in a single campaign, whereas the Northampton-born "monster", as dubbed by his manager Thomas Frank, certainly is.

Tottenham look to £50 million Premier League star as possible Hojbjerg heir

The Denmark international is expected to leave.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 15, 2024

Ultimately, it won't be a cheap deal to complete, but with how effective Toney has been when he's been given a full season to play, Tottenham cannot afford to miss out on his signature this season, and neither can Son, for that matter.

Russell, Narine, 84 for 8 – Kolkata Knight Riders are in a hole, and Delhi Capitals will look to keep them there

The Capitals won their earlier exchange, and are the table-toppers at this stage

Karthik Krishnaswamy23-Oct-20206:51

Should Eoin Morgan bat ahead of Dinesh Karthik?

Big pictureRemember this game? And this? And this one?The Kolkata Knight Riders probably had no business winning any of those games, but win is what they did. They have only won two other games so far this season, and if those jailbreaks were taken away from them, they wouldn’t be where they are on the table.Where they are is fourth, and within the playoffs’ range, but that can change quickly. There are teams currently outside the top four who have built a bit of momentum, and they know they can displace the Knight Riders, who have a distinct air of vulnerability about them after suffering a walloping at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. That defeat left the Knight Riders nursing the worst net run rate (-0.828) of all teams in the competition. How do you bounce back from the lows of 84 for 8? How do you do that without Andre Russell or Sunil Narine, or possibly both? How do you begin the process of bouncing back when you’re up against the in-form Delhi Capitals, who are gunning for a top-two finish and are themselves looking to bounce back from – a less severe but still wounding – defeat? There aren’t easy answers to these, but the Knight Riders will have to answer them soon. If they do, you might come to talk in hushed tones about those wins snatched from the jaws of defeat. “It’s the sign of a great team,” you might say, “when they win even when they aren’t playing well.”If the Knight Riders slide away from the playoffs spots, however, you will look at those wins differently. You will look at them and say they were warning signs of a team in decline. In the newsRussell injured his hamstring in the tied game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad and didn’t feature against the Royal Challengers. Narine was free to play that game, having had his action cleared, but he missed out because of what his captain Eoin Morgan described as a “niggle”. The fitness status of the two West Indians ahead of the game against the Capitals is not yet clear.Previous meetingHalf-centuries from Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant powered the Capitals to 228, but that total didn’t appear entirely safe in early-season Sharjah. Despite slipping to 122 for 6, the Knight Riders still came close in their chase, thanks to Morgan’s 18-ball 44 and Rahul Tripathi’s 16-ball 36. It came down to 26 from the last over, and Marcus Stoinis sealed victory for the Capitals with a pinpoint yorker to bowl Tripathi.Shikhar Dhawan brings out his trademark celebration•BCCI

Likely XIsDelhi Capitals: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje/Daniel Sams, 11 Tushar DeshpandeKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Rahul Tripathi, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Andre Russell/Tom Banton, 7 Pat Cummins/Sunil Narine, 8 Lockie Ferguson, 9 Prasidh Krishna, 10 Varun Chakravarthy, 11 Kuldeep YadavStrategy punts Shikhar Dhawan (69*, 57, 101*, 106*) has scored exactly half of the Capitals’ runs over their last four matches, so his wicket – particularly with the rest of the top order suffering a dip in form – becomes crucial for the Knight Riders. How do they get him early? Well, since the start of the 2019 season, fast bowlers have only dismissed Dhawan four times within the powerplay overs. He averages 84.75 against pace while striking at a healthy 135.05. His strike rate against spin in this phase (159.82) is even better, but he’s been dismissed six times in 112 balls by the slower bowlers, so the Knight Riders could look to attack him with Varun Chakravarthy or – if he plays – Narine taking the new ball from one end. Kuldeep Yadav has only bowled nine powerplay overs in his entire IPL career, but he’s not a bad candidate to try against Dhawan. In all T20 meetings, Dhawan has scored just 34 off 37 balls against Yadav, while being dismissed twice. The Knight Riders, however, might look to hold Yadav back for Rishabh Pant, who’s scored 23 off 21 balls against the left-arm wristspinner while being dismissed twice. Dinesh Karthik has a shocking record against legspinners this season: 14 runs off 18 balls, five dismissals. Against all other types of bowling, he has scored 131 runs at a more-than-decent average of 32.75 and a more-than-decent strike rate of 135.05. Morgan has also struggled against legspin: one dismissal in 55 balls, but . The Capitals don’t have a legspinner in their first-choice XI, but if they wanted to give Sandeep Lamichhane an opportunity ahead of the playoffs, this wouldn’t be a bad time to do it.Stats that matter The Capitals are yet to win a match in Abu Dhabi this season. This will be their third game at the venue. The Knight Riders (6.73) have the worst powerplay run rate of all teams this season. That low scoring rate isn’t necessarily because their openers have traded explosiveness for stability – the Knight Riders haven’t finished a single powerplay wicketless this season. They are up against a Capitals attack that has consistently taken wickets in the powerplay, picking up 17 at a best-in-the-competition strike rate of 21.18. The early overs of the Knight Riders innings, therefore, could be a key phase in the game. The Knight Riders have been poor in the powerplay with the ball as well. They have the worst economy rate of all teams in this phase (8.260 and have only taken six wickets in 60 overs, at an average of 82.66. Given that they were only defending 84, the Knight Riders’ refusal to bowl Lockie Ferguson in the powerplay against the Royal Challengers was perplexing, but they were probably going by the data, if a little too rigidly. In the IPL, Ferguson has a middle-overs (7-15) economy rate of 5.05 and has taken six wickets in that phase at an average of 14.33. In all other phases, he has an economy rate of 10.57 while taking only three wickets at 74.00. If they play, it will be Yadav’s 100th T20 game and Ajinkya Rahane’s 200th. Harshal Patel is two wickets short of 100 in T20s.

Balada é a lei. Igor Vinicius e sua mediocridade dentuça. Liziero gibi e sua eterna noite.

Pena não ter dado tempo de ter pego esses vagabundos lá dentro do Santo cupido Bar. Canalhas.”

Mandeep Singh, Chris Gayle, and Mohammed Shami star as Kings XI climb to fourth

They hunted down 150 with eight wickets to spare, pushing KKR to fifth

Bishop: Shami proving there’s room for improvement at any stage of your career

The last time Kings XI Punjab took on the Kolkata Knight Riders, a little over two weeks ago, KL Rahul’s side seemed to have plumbed the depths in the IPL. They had slumped to a sixth loss in seven games, this one particularly galling after having the match well in hand for about 90 percent of the chase. By the time the return fixture against the Knight Riders came about, the Kings XI were a team transformed – or at least a team with fortunes transformed. There was no mucking about with last-over finishes, just a good bowling performance backed up by a efficient chase, and a fifth win on the trot. That the victory came against the Knight Riders – their closest competitors for a playoff spot – made this particularly significant. The Kings XI now have 12 points and moved to the top half of the points table. The bowlers had kept the Knight Riders to 149 for 9, having successfully weathered an 81-run stand between Shubman Gill and Eoin Morgan. Mohammed Shami struck upfront and the legspin pair of Ravi Bishnoi and M Ashwin applied the choke in the second half. The chase was clinical. Mandeep Singh partnered Rahul again at the top and shrugged off initial struggles to hit an emotionally charged half-century, batting till the end when the winning runs were hit. Chris Gayle came in at No.3 and bossed the bowlers around in a way only he can, out for 51 off 29 when only three runs were needed to create some artificial jitters, but Kings XI were not to be denied on Monday. The Shami burst at the top
In what has been a regular occurrence this IPL, Shami struck early, bowling beautiful lines. Rahul Tripathi pushed at one that seamed away after pitching on off to be caught behind. Two balls later, Shami did it again, only with even more impressive movement to send back Dinesh Karthik. The batsman reviewed, because his bat had hit pad too, but the ball was too close to the bat for the decision to be overturned. This was after Glenn Maxwell had already snared Nitish Rana in the first over of the match, and at 10 for 3 in two overs, the Knight Riders were in a bit of a hole.Morgan, Gill counter-attack
It was breathtaking to watch while it was on. Morgan was into his stride straightaway, and both men exploded when Shami was given a third over in the powerplay, taking him for 21 runs after he had given up just six in his first two overs. Both men continued in that vein even after the powerplay was done, punishing anything that was wide or full. Gill, who had been more circumspect at the start in earlier games, matched Morgan stroke for stroke as the Knight Riders made light of the early wickets. It was especially impressive given their long tail, and the pair of Gill and Morgan were the last proper batsmen they had.Bishnoi, Ashwin rein the batsmen in
Ashwin gave up 14 runs in his first over, both Morgan and Gill hitting a six each. Bishnoi was hit for a six off his third ball, but off his fifth, he had Morgan slog-sweeping one of his googlies for his leg-spin twin to gobble the catch at deep square leg. Morgan had made 40 off 25 and taken the Knight Riders to 91 for 3 in the tenth over alongside Gill, but as soon as he fell, the team started to feel the effects of a lengthy tail.Gill had faced 28 balls in the first ten overs, but in the next six overs, he was on strike for just nine deliveries. Sunil Narine, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Pat Cummins were unable to get the leggies away, even to just turn the strike over to Gill, and the Knight Riders innings sputtered. Gill was eventually out for a 45-ball 57 in the 19th over, having to farm the strike and manufacture big shots.Mandeep starts cautiously, Gayle blasts off
Kings XI were missing Mayank Agarwal for a second game, but they stuck to the previous match’s opening combination of KL Rahul and Singh. Although Singh took his time at the start, being on 3 off 11 at one point, Rahul was timing the ball with his usual fluency. With not a steep target to chase, the Kings XI could absorb some quiet overs, and once Singh had got his eye in, he began scoring more briskly. The opening partnership ended at 47 in eight overs when Rahul was trapped lbw by Varun Chakravarthy, but Gayle’s arrival turned the tide decisively in the way of the Kings XI. Gayle stuck to his time-tested method of taking the fielders out of the equation when the ball was in his hitting zone, smashing Chakravarthy for sixes off the fourth and fifth balls he faced. He had been troubled by Narine in the past, but on the day, he took 17 from the 11 balls he faced off Narine, smiting two dismissive sixes straight past him too. Anything full was met by the swinging arc of Gayle’s bat with considerable force. With a low total to defend, the Gayle onslaught meant the Knight Riders ran out of options quickly. Even though he fell for 51 off 29 after a stand worth exactly 100, there was to be no great escape for the Knight Riders this time.
