The stand-in Test captain says they reviewed their 2018 defeat to find out where they could improve

Kraigg Brathwaite said he wanted to lead by example•Associated Press
A day after coach Phil Simmons raised optimism for the West Indies ODI side, Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite said the side has learnt from the mistakes made during their 2018 tour to Bangladesh.Brathwaite’s own miserable form in that series – just 22 runs in the two Tests – was one of the reasons why the visitors capitulated so easily. With the home side having their full complement of spinners available this time too, and West Indies having an even more inexperienced side, there will be even more responsibility on Brathwaite. He hasn’t had the best of times recently too, having made just 55 runs in two Tests in New Zealand Tests last month.Brathwaite wants to lead by example and set a foundation as a batsman, the key to which, he said, would be balance at the crease.Related

“I want to lead from the front,” Brathwaite said. “It is my job as an opening batsman to get runs and build a foundation for the team. I don’t see the guys here as second string. I think they can perform and do well at the international level. I know they are looking for the opportunity.”For me, being balanced at the crease is the key whether I am playing spin and pace. It was decent in England, there was improvement in New Zealand as well. I want to just stick to my plans. Keep it simple. I don’t want to think about too many things. I know my plans. Put God first, and believe in yourself.”Apart from being their most experienced Test cricketer on tour, Brathwaite also has the maximum sub-continent experience with 15 Tests. Among the already depleted batting unit, Jermaine Blackwood and John Campbell combine only six Tests in this region, while the rest of the batsmen are either uncapped or have never played Tests in the sub-continent.”We reviewed after the last series and found out where we could have improved,” Brathwaite said. “We have specific plans that we will carry out. We look forward to the challenge. You have to find ways to overcome challenges in international cricket. Their spinners did well last time. We have to execute and believe in ourselves. Trust our preparations.”Brathwaite believes that strike rotation and a solid defence will be key for their batsman. He said that he can rely on his opening partner Campbell to bat according to the conditions, while maintaining his own batting pace intact.”I think the rotation of strike will be key. John [Campbell] is a very good player. When we went to India to play Afghanistan, he got a fifty in the first innings. He didn’t change his approach in the second innings as well. I will encourage him to be himself and to trust his gameplan. His defence is solid; down here you will have to defend more balls than you get the opportunity to attack.”Once he trusts his defence, rotate when he could, he will do well. He got a score in his last Test innings in New Zealand, so he must have that belief. I know that he has the ability. Once he plays his natural game, I know John can be a fantastic opener for the West Indies.”Brathwaite said that winning in Bangladesh is still possible for his side, but they have to be patient. “When you are leading a team, you want to win. My role here is to lead from the front, both as a captain and with the bat. It will be great to get the win. We have to start hour by hour, we can’t think too far ahead. Once we take it step by step, the end result will take care of itself.”
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped a fresh update regarding the future of a "phenomenal" Celtic player this summer, with a new development emerging.
Celtic transfer news
The Hoops continue to be linked with signings in the summer transfer window, including USA international Tanner Tessman, who plies his trade for Venezia. The 22-year-old has won two caps for his country to date, but is a young player who will be expected to add to that tally.
Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers has reportedly held talks with Michel-Ange Balikwisha, with the Royal Antwerp attacker seemingly a strong target for Celtic as they look to add more firepower in the final third.
Adam Idah impressed on loan from Norwich City last season, scoring some vital goals en route to the Hoops sealing the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double, including netting the late winner in the cup final against Rangers. Bristol City striker Tommy Conway is seen as an alternative to Idah should they fail to bring him in on a permanent basis.
Another rumoured Celtic target is Poland midfielder Jakub Kaluzinski, with the Scottish giants believed to be keeping tabs on him. The 21-year-old has two years remaining on his current deal at Turkish side Antalyaspor.
Romano drops update over "extraordinary" Celtic hero
Taking to X, Romano said that Atalanta have tabled a fresh bid for Celtic star Matt O'Riley, with the offer as much as €18m (£15.1m):
At this point, it does feel as though Celtic may have to be resigned to O'Riley leaving the club this summer given the amount of interest in the midfielder, as well as the calibre of clubs thought to be seeking a deal.
While Liverpool have also been linked, Atalanta's pedigree is undeniable following their Europa League triumph last season, and the Dane may see it as too good an opportunity to turn down.
Replacing the 23-year-old would be extremely difficult considering he has been the creative hub of his side for a sustained period of time. He scored 19 goals and registered 16 assists last season, while Rodgers said of him in the recent past:
"He has been absolutely phenomenal really in his consistency. I think if we lacked anything as a team, it was probably that. But from an individual perspective, his goal return… I think someone said he had scored his first goal [of last season] in January of last year.
"So to look at his numbers now, it’s [a] huge testament to himself, because the work he puts in, the focus he puts in every single day at training to improve and be better, that’s clearly been rewarded by his teammates and everyone else. It’s very well deserved."
Rodgers has now personally held talks with 23 y/o target over Celtic move
The Bhoys’ transfer window has burst into life…
ByTom Cunningham Jul 20, 2024
Should there be a sudden change of heart from O'Riley, it would be an almighty boost for Celtic, but for now, they should be looking to find a perfect replacement to help fill the expected void left by him.
Head coach calls Australia’s decision to call off tour of South Africa “very disappointing and disruptive”

De Kock “has been given the extra burden of being captain and that can be tough and something he’s not used to” – Boucher•Getty Images
Quinton de Kock will not continue as South Africa’s Test captain after the Rawalpindi Test, with coach Mark Boucher saying that it’s important to “release him from that burden” of leading all three sides in the international arena. But it’s not a decision the team needs to make in a hurry, because the “disappointing and disruptive” development of Australia postponing their tour of South Africa means there isn’t any Test cricket on the horizon for South Africa.”When we get back after this tour we’ve got a bit of time before our next Test series so we can sit down and make a good, solid call on who can take over from him and release him from that burden and try and get the best out of him,” Boucher said on the eve of South Africa’s second and final Test in Pakistan. “It’s been tough on Quinny. If you’re not scoring runs it gets highlighted, especially if you’re a captain.”We’re not that harsh on Quinny in this environment. We know that he’s a quality player and there’s a good innings around the corner for him. He has been given the extra burden of being captain and that can be tough and something he’s not used to.”De Kock was given the role in temporary capacity for the 2020-21 summer until a permanent candidate was found. South Africa may not know who that is just yet, but they seem to have decided that it would not be the wicketkeeper-batsman.South Africa will not play Test cricket for up to nine months after the Pakistan series following the postponement of their three-match home series against Australia, scheduled for March. Australia withdrew from the tour yesterday, citing an “unacceptable” Covid-19 risk. Cricket Australia had offered to host the series in Perth, but Cricket South Africa refused after they took unprecedented steps to minimise risk for Australia, including government-approved VIP treatment. CSA called CA’s last-minute withdrawal “frustrating” and Boucher agreed with that sentiment.”CSA have expressed their disappointment and it’s no different for the players. I know there was a lot of planning going into the Australian tour back home. We haven’t really been a part of that, but it seems a lot of goalposts were being moved for that particular tour, for Australia,” Boucher said. “For example, the one positive that came out of the bubble against Sri Lanka was the hotel that we stayed at (Irene County Club). We thought it was a great hotel for us as South Africans. It suits our needs and the cultural way that we are, being outdoors.Related

“And we even surrendered that to Australia. There’s probably a feeling that we were laying down the red carpet for Australia, which is frustrating at times. After all of that, it’s very disappointing and disruptive to our plans going forward.”Apart from missing out on the opportunity to compete against the Australian Test side, South Africa also made arrangements to send their Test squad home from Pakistan at the conclusion of the Rawalpindi match on February 8 to quarantine ahead of the Australia series, and therefore miss the three-match T20I series in Lahore starting February 11. Although the players no longer need to return home early, a second-string T20I squad has already arrived in Pakistan so South Africa will release their Test players and a significant number of their support staff, as originally planned.”Myself, (bowling coach) Charl Langveldt and (media manager) Sipokazi Sokanyile will be staying over and looking after the T20 squad. It’s not ideal,” Boucher said. “There’s been a lot of planning that’s gone into the two tours, and going back and quarantining for Australia. So the planning was all there.”We were told at a very late moment that this wasn’t going to happen. It’s difficult for us to suddenly turn around when there’s a T20 series around the corner.”Quinton de Kock is caught by Abid Ali at short leg during the first Test•PCB
De Kock is among those players who are scheduled to return home, albeit with no Australia Tests to prepare for now. He will also not need to ready himself for another captaincy stint, which might have affected his form with the bat. Since being named captain, de Kock has scored just 45 runs in four innings and, after four unsuccessful reviews in Karachi and questionable bowling and fielding calls, it appeared he may want to relinquish the role, or have it taken from him, sooner than expected. Boucher denied that.”It wasn’t a consideration to make extreme decisions during a tour, especially a two-match Test series. I don’t think it’s time for panic,” Boucher said. “I think it’s time for us to get closer as a unit and make some good, solid calls. And understand that if the guys put in performances then we’ll be in a better position to win Test matches. It’s difficult to put it all on one person, especially a talent like Quinny. It’s not his fault that we’re 1-0 down. It’s some very poor cricket we played on day one (in Karachi).”South Africa were bowled out for 220 on the first day of the first Test and lost seven wickets for 87 runs, which Boucher put down to a lack of application that he has seen his players try to improve on, both by watching Pakistan and in practice ahead of the second Test.”Hopefully the guys have learnt their lesson by watching how Pakistan played, and from our mistakes,” he said. “I think the mental preparation going into this game has been good because they’ve witnessed it and seen how Pakistan have played, and how to put a big score together.”There’s a lot more care about keeping their wickets and a lot more intensity when they defend; not so many shots in the nets. You can talk as much as you can. Sometimes they’ve got to see it to believe that’s the way to go about building innings in subcontinent conditions.”This will be the last Test South Africa play in the season, with no indication of when the Australia tour would be rescheduled to or when another Test series comes around. ESPNcricinfo understands that CSA is looking at holding a T20 tournament at home in February-March before Pakistan visit the country for white-ball matches towards the end of March.

Mostramos alguma reação no segundo tempo. Temos que levar isso para o jogo em casa e tentar a vitória. Procurar honrar essa camisa que é uma camisa grande”, disse o atacante, que marcou os dois gols da Chape.
O próximo jogo da Chapecoense pelo Campeonato Brasileiro da Série será na próxima quarta-feira, dia 13 de outubro, às 19h00, na Arena Condá, contra o Athletico-PR. No momento ocupa a última colocação na tabela com apenas 12 pontos e precisa de uma reação espetacular para escapar do rebaixamento.
The winds of change have blown for Liverpool this year, with Arne Slot's budding project seemingly heading in the right direction. Pre-season results must be taken with a pinch of salt but the smoothness of the Dutchman's style's inculcation is promising to say the least.
Having defeated Arsenal 2-1 in an entertaining friendly in Philadelphia, the Reds are starting to prove their ball-playing faculty, and while fans hope to see some activity this summer in the centre of the park, signing a build-up specialist to orchestrate from the base of the midfield and offer competition to Wataru Endo, treatment is needed elsewhere.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot
Central defence has long been considered an area in need of revamping at Anfield, especially after Joel Matip's contract expired in June, but Jarell Quansah's emergence has eased the need for immediate investment.
The attacking flanks are similarly in need of some added firepower, especially as the lionised Mohamed Salah steps into his final year, and since sporting director Richard Hughes suggested Liverpool could see a "crescendo" in August, FSG seem set to accelerate their interest in the coming weeks.
Liverpool ready to pounce
As per Football Transfers, Liverpool are among the top Premier League clubs interested in signing Pedro Neto this summer, though Tottenham Hotspur currently have the lead in the race.
Title favourites Arsenal and Manchester City are also interested in signing the 24-year-old, who has suffered his share of injury problems in recent years but remains one of the most coveted wingers in English football.
Wolves winger Pedro Neto
Valued at £60m by Wolverhampton Wanderers, it's generally accepted at Molineux that the Portuguese winger will be sold this summer, and given he is highly effective across both flanks, he could be the perfect addition to a Liverpool side stepping back into the Champions League and indeed a new era.
Why Liverpool could sign Pedro Neto
Neto has been a prominent figure in the Premier League for a number of years now, having signed for Wolves from Serie A side Lazio in an £8m double swoop with Bruno Jordao back in 2019.
Pedro Neto celebrates for Wolves
He was only 19. Now, a fully-fledged sensation, Neto has established himself as one of Wolves' most talented players in modern history, described as an "incredibly talented and physically very gifted player" by boss Gary O'Neil at the start of the 2023/24 season.
Injuries might have been his enemy but Neto succeeded in levelling up to an elite-level quality last term, notching three goals and 11 assists across 24 fixtures in all competitions, albeit missing two large portions with hamstring injuries.

Slot, like Jurgen Klopp, implements an intense style of football that is birthed from high-octane training sessions, though, unlike his predecessor, the 46-year-old has an exemplary fitness record across his past two clubs: Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands.
Neto, moreover, has a lot of experience on the right flank, with his left-footed preference allowing him to drift inside and wreak havoc, evidenced by his ranking among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League last season for assists and the top 9% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.
The Portugal international would be a dynamic and versatile option for a healthy attacking fold on Merseyside, and while supporters crave the signing of Anthony Gordon, this might actually be the one to go for.
How Pedro Neto compares to Anthony Gordon
Hailed as a "pace monster" by analyst Ben Mattinson, Neto would add a dimension to Slot's wide play and enhance the overall fluency of a Liverpool side that is already tantalising a successful season.
Wolves star Pedro Neto
Gordon was deservedly crowned Newcastle's Player of the Year for 2023/24 after his prolific campaign, scoring 12 goals and supplying 11 assists across all competitions and being praised for taking "it up a level" by pundit Jamie Carragher.
The former Everton player has also hit a career goal contribution rate of 0.28 while on the right, as opposed to 0.40 on the left, so he wouldn't be able to sort out Liverpool's Salah conundrum with the same success as the protean-performing Neto.
Given that Liverpool already yield one of the Premier League's finest left-wingers in Luis Diaz, who has been linked with a move away this summer but seems unlikely to be going anywhere, with no contact pointed Liverpool's way.
And as a further point, while Gordon offered far greater striking output than the Old Gold phenom last season, the underlying numbers suggest that Neto could offer more to the Liverpool first team.

As you can see from the table above, Neto is a more creative and more progressive player than Gordon, at least, he performed as such last term. His goalscoring wasn't at the same standard but he also played in a goal-shy Wolves team, tasked as the architect of the playmaking.
And a move to Slot's Liverpool could alter that considerably, for the Anfield outfit created more big chances in the Premier League last year than any of their rivals (with 102).
Newcastle player Anthony Gordon
Wolves, conversely, ranked 16th (with 54), making a telling comment on the importance of Neto's creative input. Newcastle, as an addendum, ranked joint-second with 97 big chances created – one can only imagine the chaos Neto would have wreaked if placed in either of the northern sides.
Liverpool must sign Neto this summer; that is by no means meant to discredit Gordon's exciting skillset, but the Portuguese, when fit and firing, is a force to be reckoned with and would make a marked improvement on the Reds.
Liverpool's 8/10 talent who sank Arsenal can make Slot forget about Gordon
There have been some promising pre-season signs over the pond from Slot’s Reds…
Having just signed a new deal, Chelsea's top goalscorer last season, Cole Palmer, will be aiming to replicate his form of last season, and looking to fire Enzo Maresca's Blues into a Champions League qualification spot.
An addition that could help Palmer, and free him of the double-teaming he could come up against this season, would be the signing of Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, who has been heavily linked all summer at Chelsea.
Napoli strikerVictor Osimhen.
Osimhen made 32 appearances for Napoli in all competitions last season, scoring 17 goals, providing four assists, and totalling 2,476 minutes played.
However, he's not the only forward in the crosshairs of the recruitment team.
Chelsea transfer news
According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are in negotiations with Atlético Madrid for attacker, João Félix. However, there has been no breakthrough yet in the talks.
Gallagher would move to Atlético Madrid, as part of a chain of events, if Chelsea can agree a deal for Felix, but for now, Gallagher has returned to London after the Samu Omorodion deal collapsed a few days ago.
Felix made 44 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona (on loan from Atlético Madrid) last season, scoring ten goals, providing six assists, and totalling 2,143 minutes played.
How Felix and Osimhen could work at Chelsea
Ex-Chelsea striker, Álvaro Morata, once described Felix as a "special talent" when speaking about him back in 2022, eluding to his ability to pick that "last pass".
Felix has, of course, already played for Chelsea, joining on a six-month loan in January 2023, where he made 20 appearances for the Blues, scoring four goals in that time, and adorning the Chelsea side with his dazzling dribbling.

Felix excels as a carrier, with elegant footwork in tight spaces, the ability to receive the ball and retain possession, and wriggle out of awkward situations to make something out of nothing.
His ability to draw fouls is akin to an Eden Hazard or Jack Grealish, allowing him to win set pieces in the final third, and relieve pressure on his side when needed.
His 6.22 touches in the penalty area per 90 is another good sign, especially if you were to pair him with Osimhen, as together they would average 13.04 per 90. The Nigerian's ability to win duels in the box, mixed with Felix's instincts and tight ball control in the penalty area, could prove to be a recipe for success, especially if you are averaging that many box touches per game.
One of the Portugal international's best assets is his volume shooting and ball-striking quality. Averaging 3.73 shots per 90, which ranks in the best 10% among forwards in the top five leagues, shows his confidence to get shots off and test the keeper.
Joao Felix scores for Chelsea
Of course, with all big transfers there is a big risk, but adding a creative force like Felix to this Chelsea side, alongside a box dominator like Osimhen, could just be exactly what Chelsea need.

Big PictureIs it the future, or is it, simply, the present, and the reality of a looming T20 World Cup? England rested and rotated all through the Test leg of this India tour, but now they’re at close to full strength for the T20I series. These five matches, therefore, come with a sense of urgency that a lot of bilateral T20I series lack. England, possibly the world’s best T20I side, are giving all their stars a run-out in Indian conditions before the big event in October. Along the way, they’ll subject India to the most rigorous litmus test for where they stand in this format.India, for their part, have only lost two of their last 15 completed T20Is. It’s a formidable record, indicative of a side that has most bases covered, but the big question for them to answer is how they’ll do when they meet a really good hitting team – such as this England line-up – in a knockout game on a flat pitch, particularly when asked to bat first.Related

It’s evident, from the make-up of their squad for this series, that they’re looking to assemble the firepower for that sort of scenario. Suryakumar Yadav – an innovative, 360-degree player – Ishan Kishan – IPL 2020’s most prolific six-hitter – and the recalled Rishabh Pant bring extra muscle to a middle order that already includes Hardik Pandya, and the addition of Rahul Tewatia – whose fitness status is as yet unclear – gives them a third option for the spin-bowling allrounder’s role, more explosive with the bat than either Axar Patel or Washington Sundar. With Shardul Thakur potentially at No. 8, this is a team with a good amount of batting depth, so the biggest question for India, as always, is whether their top three can bat with a little more adventure and a little less fear of getting out.Can India, in short, be more like England?England, for their part, will need to find a way to be more like India – with the ball. Among all Full Member teams, England have the worst T20I economy rate since the start of 2018 (India are fourth-best). If they can’t find a way to rectify that issue on Indian pitches – particularly given the injury doubts surrounding Jofra Archer – other teams will ruthlessly target their bowlers come the T20 World Cup.Form guideIndia LWWWW (last five completed T20Is, most recent first) England WWWLW6:12
Rohit: Pant is starting to understand game-situations better now
In the spotlightHe’s put an indifferent IPL behind him, he’s “worked his backside off” – in the words of his coach Ravi Shastri – to bring his fitness up to speed, he’s improved his wicketkeeping beyond recognition, and he’s played four outstanding innings in the space of seven Tests to once again have the world at his feet. He’s earned a T20I recall too, and India will hope Rishabh Pant can do to England’s bowlers in white-ball cricket what he did to James Anderson when he bowled to him with a new red ball at the same venue last week. It’s mindboggling that no team went for Jason Roy at the IPL auction, but this may have had something to do with a perceived weakness against spin. In his limited time in the IPL – a combined seven innings in the 2017 and 2018 seasons – he struggled against spin, averaging 12.40 and striking at 110.71, while returning corresponding figures of 117.00 and 150.00 against pace. Through this series, Roy will hope to show the teams that rejected him that he has the game to succeed against spin in Indian conditions.Team newsVarun Chakravarthy is set to miss the series after failing his mandatory fitness test, while there are doubts over the availability of Rahul Tewatia and T Natarajan. Given all this, the bowling attack is likely to include one of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, and a possible three-way battle between Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for two spots. It also remains unclear where Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav will fit in the middle order, but the biggest selection headache for India will involve their openers: which two among Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul will fill the top two slots? Virat Kohli, without confirming the XI, said on match eve that Rohit and Rahul remained India’s first-choice T20I openers.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 KL Rahul, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Axar Patel/Washington Sundar, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Navdeep Saini.India will be hoping Rishabh Pant brings his form in from the Tests•Getty Images
Jofra Archer’s recurring elbow issue is the main concern England have going into the series-opener. They have a wealth of fast-bowling options to select from, though, with Mark Wood, Tom Curran and Reece Topley all in contention should the need arise.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Eoin Morgan (capt), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Jofra Archer/Mark Wood, 11 Adil Rashid.Pitch and conditionsA far more batting-friendly surface can be expected at Motera than the ones served up for the third and fourth Tests, though the pitches that hosted the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20s here in January did help the spinners. The slower bowlers in that tournament averaged 32.00 on this ground and had an overall economy rate of 6.67, with the quicks managing corresponding figures of 24.02 and 7.55. Of the seven matches played here, five were won by the chasing team, suggesting dew may have had an influence.Stats and trivia India and England are dead even in terms of their T20I head-to-head: they’ve each won seven and lost seven. India, however, have come out on top in four of the last five meetings. Virat Kohli needs 72 runs to become the first batsman to score 3000 T20I runs. Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan have done extraordinarily well as a T20I partnership. They’ve put on two century stands and two half-century stands in eight innings, and average 66.37 as a pair while scoring at a whopping 11.46 per over. This makes them the fourth-quickest-scoring partnership among all pairs who’ve put on at least 200 runs together. K Ananthapadmanabhan will be making his debut as on-field umpire in this game. He was a legspinner who played over 100 first-class matches, the only player from Kerala to do so. Quotes”No, I don’t agree with that [India being the team to beat at the upcoming T20 World Cup]. They [England] are the No. 1 [T20I] team in the world and the prime focus will be on them. All the other teams will be wary of the strength that they bring onto the park and every other team will agree with what I say.” “Wicket looks good, depends what the groundsman chooses to do between today and tomorrow.”
