Kumble: When you leave it to the last couple of balls, it becomes a lottery

Punjab Kings head coach says their batters should have finished the chase in 19 overs

Steyn: The better team lost tonight

Anil Kumble, the Punjab Kings coach, was at a loss of words to explain yet another loss from a winning position. Kings failed to score the eight runs they needed off the last two overs to lose to Rajasthan Royals by just two runs. It made their qualifying chances that much harder. A sixth loss in nine games now means Kings will have to win every single game to control their own fate.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

“It’s sort of become a pattern for us especially when we get to Dubai, it seems,” Kumble said. “The approach was clear, we needed to finish it in 19 overs. That was the approach, to not let it go till the end. But unfortunately, when you leave it to the last couple of balls, it becomes a lottery. Credit to [Kartik] Tyagi for the way he bowled.”The loss followed a somewhat similar pattern to their game against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi last year. Back then, they lost despite needing just 22 off 18 balls with nine wickets in hand. On that occasion, they turned a cruise into complete wreckage by throwing their bats around and then being bested by Sunil Narine. Here, they couldn’t quite get bat to ball.Kumble was particularly irked by his batters not being able to read Tyagi’s plans towards the end.”It was pretty clear he was going to bowl wide outside off, and somehow our batters didn’t take the right options,” he said. “We need to discuss this and sort it out. We have five more games to go, we don’t want to get bogged down by this defeat but it’s certainly a bitter pill to swallow.”Related

Asked if he thought Royals left them with too much to chase, Kumble felt the bowlers had done everything that was asked of them on a “good wicket.” And it was simply a case of the batters failing to see off the chase. Arshdeep Singh picked up his maiden T20 five-for, while Mohammed Shami’s late strikes meant Royals finished well short of the 200-plus they looked to get. In fact, they lost 6 for 19.”I think it was a very good wicket, and we really came back in the last four overs where we gave away just 20 runs and picked up six wickets or so. Arshdeep bowled brilliantly, as did Shami. [Harpreet] Brar bowled really well on a tough pitch. On a ground where one side of the boundary is short, at one stage Royals looked good to score 200-210. So to really squeeze them in the last four, I thought the bowling effort was really good.”With the bat also, we showed it till the 17th over. We were cruising but we were pulled back in the 18th and 19th overs after [Aiden] Markram’s six. As batters, they know what their scoring shots are. All it needed was a bit of hitting. Even if someone got out first ball, the next batter had five balls to get the runs. When it goes to the last couple of balls, it becomes hard. The messaging was clear. We had to finish it in 19 overs, unfortunately that didn’t happen today.”

West Ham have hit the jackpot on Moyes signing who’s worth more than Bowen

West Ham’s current wage structure represents good value, with their best players earning the highest figures (mostly), with very few players presenting poor value for money with their wage packages.

Danny Ings is perhaps the most eye-catching at the top end of the wage list, earning £125k-per-week, the third highest at the club, despite playing more of a bit-part role.

The average wages in the squad are between £70,000-£100,000, with ten players earning between these two figures, including Max Kilman, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Niklas Fullkrug, and Mohammed Kudus.

Stats taken from Capology.

The two highest earners in the squad, both making £150,000 per week, are Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta, largely seen as two of the Hammers’ best players.

Bowen and Paqueta's form in 2024/25

Bowen made 44 appearances last campaign, scoring 20 goals and providing ten assists in his 3,842 minutes played. It was a brilliant campaign in which the England winger was rewarded with a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euros, with his value rising all the way to £42m as per Transfermarkt.

Paqueta, on the other hand, made 43 appearances last season, scoring eight goals, providing seven assists, and totalling 3,478 minutes played. The Brazilian is valued at a similar price tag by Transfermarkt, sitting at £46m.

Both players have started this season in a slower fashion. The skipper has three goals and provided two assists in his first nine appearances, which isn’t too bad, but Paqueta has scored just twice in his nine appearances so far.

That said, neither are quite as valuable as a certain Mohamed Kudus.

Mohammed Kudus' market value in 2024

Kudus, who was signed from Ajax for £38m last summer by David Moyes has been on quite the rise to stardom since moving to English football.

Such has been his productive form in the famous claret and blue that fellow Premier League sides such as Manchester City and Arsenal are sniffing around a player who boasts a larger market value than Bowne and Co with the Ghanain’s release clause sitting a pretty £85m.

Mohammed Kudus for West Ham.

Since joining the club, the 24-year-old has made 54 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in 4,118 minutes played.

So, why is the hard-working player worth more than Bowen and Paqueta? Well, this could be due to his profile being slightly rarer and desirable for top clubs who want to add pace in transition, efficient attackers, and forwards that work hard for the team out of possession.

Bowen and Paqueta are both 27 years old, whereas Kudus is just 24 years old, which does play a part in the valuation of players, so this is important to consider on top of the stats above.

Indeed, the metrics also show why Kudus is so valuable, putting in big defensive shifts, whilst still offering excellent goal threat, pace on the break, and driving his team forwards, shown by his 5.47 progressive carries per 90 which are streets ahead of his colleagues.

Kudus may not be West Ham’s most important player, but you can certainly see why he is so highly valued, and we could just see some of the “big six” begin to circle for his signature soon.

Eoin Morgan: Australia clash will have no bearing 'whatsoever' on Ashes

Test and white-ball formats too far apart to land any psychological blows, says captain

England versus Australia is always a high-stakes contest irrespective of the format, but Eoin Morgan believes that the result of Saturday’s T20 World Cup clash in Dubai will have no bearing “whatsoever” in the build-up to December’s Ashes opener in Brisbane.England go into the third match of the Super 12s on a high after thumping victories over West Indies and Bangladesh in their opening two games, but anticipate a stiffer test against Australia, who are also unbeaten in Group 1 following a forceful run-chase against Sri Lanka on Thursday.”It’s probably going to be one of our most difficult games,” Morgan said. “Australia are a very strong side. Coming into the tournament, they would probably be considered joint-second favourites, along with us. They’re a side that we know pretty well – we’ve played against them a lot over a number of years, so looking forward to a really good game.”The two teams played out an absorbing pair of white-ball series in England last summer – England claimed the T20 leg 2-1, but lost by the same margin in the ODIs for their first home series defeat since 2015. Australia also won convincingly at the same stage of the 2019 World Cup, before being overwhelmed by eight wickets in a pulsating semi-final at Edgbaston.”You learn a hell of a lot about how they play their cricket, how disciplined they can be,” Morgan said. “When they get on top they can be a difficult to side to play, when you try and wrestle momentum back.”The challenge for us and them is that we’re not playing at home so it’s about trying to adapt our style of play. Early momentum in any game can go a long way to winning. But like we’ve witnessed over the last couple of years, if we don’t manage to gain that momentum, I think we have guys that can either wrestle it back or counter-punch.”Related

One key operator who has yet to feature in the tournament is Mark Wood, England’s fastest bowler, who has been resting an ankle niggle during the opening week. Morgan said that both he and Tom Curran were “progressing really well” and that a call on Wood’s availability would be made on the morning of the match. But, Morgan insisted, despite Wood also being earmarked for a frontline role in the Ashes, there would be little point in trying to read too much into his display across four overs in the UAE, compared to the challenge that awaits in Australia in the coming weeks.”I’ve played Test matches and have played 50-over and T20 for a long period of time,” Morgan said. “There was a time and place where 50-over cricket was closely aligned with Test match cricket and the way that it was played.”Particularly top of the order and how your quicks bowled, but I think white-ball cricket has moved so far away from red-ball cricket that there’s just day and night between a psychological blow in one format in comparison to the other.”In the wake of the controversy surrounding Quinton de Kock and his refusal to take a knee ahead of South Africa’s match against West Indies, Morgan acknowledged that England and Australia may need to co-ordinate their own anti-racism gestures, particularly given that their failure to show solidarity during their 2020 series attracted criticism, not least from the former West Indies great Michael Holding, who decried their lack of action as “lame”.England’s cricketers have taken to wearing T-shirts denouncing all forms of discrimination prior to their home internationals, but because this approach is not permitted at ICC tournaments, Morgan said that the team would need to discuss the appropriate action.”If we’re not allowed to take our stance against all discriminations, we need to try to find something else that makes a difference,” Morgan said. “There’s a chance [we will take a knee]. The collective message [is] more powerful [when] everybody agrees to what we’re buying into. That’s the best way to raise awareness, educate and come across with a more powerful message.”We’ll talk at length today but we are quite restricted in what we can do at ICC events. If we come to something that can be supported by Australia, we will speak to them and see what their thoughts are as well.”

100% duels won: 8/10 Sunderland star was even better than Isidor

Sunderland managed to leap up to the top of the Championship standings with a narrow victory away at Hull City on Sunday, with many star performers standing out for Regis Le Bris’ men.

The Black Cats had to be patient and wait an extra day to get back into the thick of it in the second tier, with all other Championship teams playing on the Saturday, but a win was secured all the same courtesy of a second half strike by summer recruit Wilson Isidor.

The new loan signing from Zenit St. Petersburg is proving to be a hit with the Sunderland faithful early on, with this goal continuing his on-fire streak in league action.

Isidor's performance vs Hull

Isidor’s breakaway winner against the Tigers means the 24-year-old attacker has now found the back of the net three times in his last four second tier encounters, as Sunderland begin to uncover a first-team option up top they can rely on.

This strike away at the MKM Stadium is surely the pick of the bunch from his early Black Cats back catalogue, as the confident Frenchman galloped forward with pace to burn before delicately chipping Ivor Pandur in style, with the unbelievable counter-attack move sending the away masses into pandemonium.

Away from the goal, Isidor wasn’t the most involved in the action – with only nine touches of the ball coming his way – but Le Bris will love how deadly the 24-year-old is in decisive moments, with that strike sending his team back to the top of the ever-changing Championship summit.

The three points were also secured due to a valiant defensive effort from Le Bris’ visitors, away from Isidor’s heroics up the other end, with another loan face in Chris Mepham taking all the plaudits at the full-time whistle for his team’s dogged clean sheet.

Mepham's performance in numbers

Mepham has managed to make Daniel Ballard’s absences from recent line-ups feel less notable, with the AFC Bournemouth loanee slotting into the heart of defence seamlessly so far.

Amassing 65 touches of the ball, the experienced Welshman – who has 94 appearances in the second tier under his belt – was calm and controlled under pressure, with only six of his 51 passes going astray to keep an impressive 88% passing accuracy in-tact, alongside also battling well when it came to asserting himself into duels.

It was an all-round superb display by the brand new Black Cats number 26, with Mepham winning every single duel that came his way to continually thwart Hull in attacking areas, which led to Tim Walter’s home side accumulating zero shots on target across the full 90 minutes.

Mepham was rewarded for his efforts in the 1-0 win with a positive 8/10 match rating after the game by Roker Report journalist Andy Tomlinson, who labelled his display as “accomplished” and even further stated that he is beginning to strike up a formidable centre-back partnership with Black Cats captain Luke O’Nien.

He was, therefore, even better than Isidor as he was superb in all of his work throughout the game and helped to provide the platform for the striker to go and win the match.

That is now three clean sheets from five league games for the 6 foot 4 star since making the loan switch to the Stadium of Light happen, with Le Bris presumably confident that more imperious displays will come from the Welshman as the season drags on.

Now, Sunderland will be aiming to make it it two victories from two on the road when travelling to Luton Town this Wednesday night, in order to tighten their grip on top spot even more.

Ross Taylor: 'Any time you play India at home, you're going to be the underdogs'

Ross Taylor is wary of New Zealand’s two-fold challenge: playing India in India, and carrying the weight of coming in as WTC champs

It’s been a “strange” five months for Ross Taylor. Since hitting the four that made New Zealand Test world champions on June 23, he has not played any cricket. Now, as he returns from his break to begin New Zealand’s next cycle in the World Test Championship, he knows things will likely get harder for them if anything. For one, they will not be flying under the radar but come in as the champions, and they have one of the toughest assignments in world cricket to kick things off: India in India.”We can say we’re world champions now and that’s suddenly different, trying to retain it,” Taylor said. “It’s sort of a harder place to start. We started in Sri Lanka last time and we drew that series. It’s going to be a great two years I’m sure.”New Zealand will be touring India, Pakistan and England in the current WTC cycle and will be playing Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa at home. In the previous cycle, they started with a drawn series in Sri Lanka but went on to lose 3-0 in Australia. They returned home to win against India, West Indies and Pakistan and became the first side to qualify for the final after Australia’s tour of South Africa was postponed over Covid-19 concerns.Taylor believes experience will be key in overcoming the challenges of a series in India. “We’ve gone so many years as underdogs. But now coming in as champions: I guess the element of surprise is gone. But any time you play India at home you’re going to be the underdogs, whether you’re No. 1 in the world or where they sit in international cricket at the time. They are resting a couple of players but they’re still a formidable side and know these conditions really well.”The way we adapt to these conditions is going to be the key going forward. Some of the guys have played many a time here before. We’ll be looking forward to hopefully use that experience to make things slightly easier but we know it’s going to be tough.”Taylor had mixed feelings about his long break, acknowledging how crucial it is to get some game-time ahead of playing in Indian conditions. This time around even more so, as New Zealand have had to train without additional net bowlers due to Covid-19 restrictions.”When you’re coming to India you want to play as much cricket as you want and can,” Taylor said. “Preparation so far has been fantastic. [But] it’s a little bit different having no net bowlers, you know, facing our [own] bowlers as preparation. It’s been key. I have been lining up to face spinners, they bowl a lot of overs. Normally you [also] get 10-15 overs of net bowlers of spin to practice. It is slightly different but it is what it is and it’s an interesting challenge both on the field and off it as well.”Taylor has some experience playing Test cricket in the country, having been on tours in 2010, 2012 and 2016, and he has some ideas on how New Zealand can tackle India’s bowlers in these conditions.”Obviously spin plays a major part. The new ball, it can do a bit but it can also be the easiest time to score sometimes. India have world-class spinners and know how to set batters up in these conditions. For us, it’s about been able to pick up the lengths as quick as possible and trust the defence.”When there are a lot of men around the bat, it can be an intimidating place to start your innings but having said that… Getting through those first 10-20 balls is going to be crucial and it’s a bit of a cliche, but things do get easier. But no, it’s going to a big challenge for us, especially the batting unit.”After the conclusion of the ongoing T20I series, which India has wrapped up with a game to spare, the first Test kicks off on November 25 in Kanpur followed by a second in Mumbai from December 3.
