Chelsea are flying right now, sat second in the Premier League, just four points adrift of league-leaders Liverpool, having smashed fierce rivals Tottenham 4-3 on Sunday, despite actually being 2-0 down inside 11 minutes.

Enzo Maresca’s side have now scored four or more on four separate occasions in the Premier League this season, making them the division’s top-scorers, four clear of second-placed, West London rivals Brentford, who will visit Stamford Bridge at the rather unusual time of 7pm this forthcoming Sunday.

Across all competitions, the Blues have netted a whopping 61 goals in 23 matches, an average of 2.65 goals per game, with the 142 goals scored in the double-winning 2009/10 season still the most the club have racked up in a single campaign.

Given their ongoing involvement in the UEFA Conference League, and with a revamped, expanded FIFA Club World Cup to come next June and July, the Blues could play as many as 68 matches this season meaning, should they keep up their current scoring rate, they’re on course to smash that previous record by bagging a staggering 180 goals.

That’s been helped by one main, in particular…

Nicolas Jackson: taking his game to another level

Of course, Cole Palmer is getting plenty of the headlines, not least because he’s now taken his tally to 50 goals and assists since the start of last season in the Premier League, one more than Mohamed Salah, who’s second on the list.

However, the form of Nicolas Jackson should not be overlooked.

During his first season with the Blues, the Senegalese striker was widely mocked, largely due to his propensity to miss high-quality, high-profile chances. The statistics do somewhat back up this narrative.

Jackson’s non-penalty goals minus non-penalty goals figure was -4.6, according to FBref, meaning he would have been expected to score almost five more goals than he actually did, based on the quality of chances he had; only two players had a lower figure last season, namely Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Brennan Johnson.

The Chelsea forward also missed seven big changes in the Premier League during his debut campaign, albeit 11 players did squander more.

Having said that, Jackson did end the campaign having netted 17 goals in all competitions, with Ali Tweedale in Opta’s the Analyst arguing that the striker “has actually been a success at Stamford Bridge”.

There are also signs that the Senegalese forward is getting even better, having been one of the best-performing players in the division so far this season.

As made clear above, Jackson has been one of the outstanding attackers in the Premier League to date this season, but there is actually a former Chelsea centre-forward out there somewhere in the ether who has outscored him over the last year or so.

Michy Batshuayi's post-Chelsea career

​​​​​​Michy Batshuayi arrived at Chelsea from Olympique de Marseille for a reported fee of £33m in 2016, scoring a respectable 25 goals in 77 appearances for the club.

During this period however, he was loaned out five times, spending time with Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, Crystal Palace twice and then Beşiktaş, before finally departing in 2022, sold to Fenerbahçe for a miserly €3m (around £2.4m).

Then, last summer, he controversially joined Galatasaray on a free transfer, becoming only the seventh player in history to represent all of İstanbul’s big three and the first non-Turkish player to achieve this rare feat.

So far this season, Batshuayi has six goals to his name, on target in vain twice as Okan Buruk’s team were dumped out of the Champions League play-offs by BSC Young Boys in August, also bagging four Süper Lig goals, with the defending champions six points clear at the top.

Thus, having also bagged 16 goals for Fenerbahçe in 2024, before departing across the Bosporus Strait for their fiercest rivals, the Belgian has 22 goals to his name this calendar year, five more than the current incumbent of Chelsea’s number nine position Jackson.

Very similar when comparing their attacking games over the last year using FBRef, alongside the fact Raphinha is remarkably only two goal contributions off Salah for his 2024/25 output, the South American might well be just what Liverpool need to soften any blow that might well come their way.

Raphinha’s stunning goal and assist numbers have even seen him be labelled as “Europe’s best player in 24/25” by Sky Sports journalist Dougie Critchley, despite Salah lighting up the Premier League.

It would be a real knock to the system if Liverpool were to lose their magnificent attacker, but if Raphinha then comes in, that gaping wound could be sorted out rather quickly.

That was the fifth time out of seven attempts where Capitals lost chasing – with targets in the range of 172 to 223 in those defeats – and Pant’s scores in those games read 43(29), 34(17), 44(24), 44(30), 21(11). While some of these matches demanded a hell-for-leather approach, there were a few where the equation appeared to be in Capitals’ grasp – against Gujarat Titans in Pune, they needed 54 off 36 (chasing 172) when Pant fell, and went on to lose by 14 runs; when he got out versus Lucknow Super Giants, a target of 196 had boiled down to 76 needed from 43 balls, and Capitals eventually lost by six runs.It hasn’t helped that the Capitals are short on finishing prowess, with the likes of Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel and Ripal Patel often batting as high as No. 6. But in that short period of time, if he does the damage, there’s enough damage to bring that required rate from say 12 an over to 10 an over. Then it’s for the other guys to take it home.”In their remaining three matches, Capitals face a virtual must-win scenario. To get the best out of Pant which will empower the team’s batting, Shastri has identified a clear route for his former ward. “I’d like to see him bat at three for Delhi Capitals, especially now when the heat is on, when they’ve got to win. Let him go and smack it.”Both Shastri and Vettori agreed that Pant was on the cusp of turning the corner. “He’s threatened, I feel like he’s threatened in every game,” Vettori said. “We’ve had discussions around whether he’s out of form and I’ve suggested because of his strike rate – against pace and spin, still over 150 for both facets – that he’s so close to having that big performance. I think that big innings can still happen in these last three games.”

Arteta confirmed on Friday that Saka will now be out for more than two months after undergoing surgery on his hamstring, which comes as a seismic blow for Arsenal, who must now cope without their superstar player.

“He has had a procedure and everything went well, but unfortunately he will be out for many, many weeks,” said Arteta on Saka’s condition.

“It will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how much longer. It will depend on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, and the mobility of that. It is very difficult to say.

Barcelona star Dani Olmo is of interest to Arsenal heading into next month, and it is believed that they’re in “positive contacts” with the Spaniard’s representatives (Sacha Tavolieri).

Interestingly, The Athletic has reported that Arsenal are also open to signing a new striker in January, but they also acknowledge that any noteworthy name will come at a premium.

Arsenal are admirers of Wolves striker Matheus Cunha heading into the winter window, though Vitor Pereira’s star isn’t their only target.

Arsenal consider marquee January move for Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is still in Arsenal’s thinking for the start of 2025.

The Nigeria marksman is currently on a season-long loan from Napoli, but there is a rumoured break clause in Osimhen’s contract which would allow certain interested clubs, including Arsenal, to strike a move for him next month.

This would be dependent on the Gunners matching his Napoli release clause of around £66 million – something they’re apparently considering.

Indeed, O’Rourke writes that Arsenal are plotting a “box-office deal” for Osimhen in January, but a host of big sides will also be contemplating the same thing and could have to “break the bank” for his signature.

The 25-year-old, as many predicted, has continued to impress in the Süper Lig after leaving Napoli on a temporary deal in the summer – with an anonymous Nigerian journalist telling Foot Boom that Osimhen is among the world’s “elite” strikers.

“No matter what critiques one might have of Osimhen, you cannot question his tireless energy and commitment,” said the reporter.

“This singular quality sets him apart in the modern game, placing him among the elite strikers. He remains your asset even in goal droughts.”

Contra o Ayacucho, tocou 18 vezes na bola, com uma precisão de 70%, isto é, um taxa de acerto de dez passes. Além disso, concluiu com sucesso sua única tentativa de drible.

Sem jogar desde o dia 19 de março, na partida contra o Botafogo-SP, que terminou também em vitória para o Tricolor paulista, Juan aproveitou a chance desta última quinta-feira (7) e mostrou que pode ser uma boa opção para o técnico Rogério Ceni nas próximas partidas. Conseguiu superar, inclusive, o rendimento de Patrick, que se manifestou abaixo da média esperada.

Ao todo, o atacante já disputou doze partidas vestindo a camisa da equipe profissional do São Paulo.
