Daren Sammy has been appointed head coach of St Lucia Kings for the 2022 edition of the CPL, taking over from Andy Flower, who was at the helm for two seasons.Sammy, who has been with the team since the first edition of the league in 2013, stepped down from captaincy last year. He was appointed the franchise’s “T20 cricket consultant and brand ambassador” for the 2021 season and worked with Flower as part of the backroom staff.”St Lucia is and will always be my home, it was always part of the plan to lead the franchise after my playing days,” Sammy said. “The time is now. I can’t wait to start this next chapter with this amazing franchise as we continue on our quest to win our first CPL title. Many thanks to the Kings franchise owners for the faith shown in me for this role. The journey continues.”

While Sammy has officially not confirmed his retirement from all forms of cricket, he has not played since CPL 2020, where he took Kings to the final for the first time in seven years. He has since been appointed as the head coach of Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL, and in June last year was added to the Cricket West Indies (CWI) board as an independent non-member director for two years.Related

After qualifying for the playoffs just once in seven seasons since the start of CPL, the Kings have turned a corner in the last two years making it to two successive finals. However, they finished on the wrong side of the result on both occasions. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Faf du Plessis, who led Kings last season, is likely to continue as captain this year as well. The 2022 edition will kick off on August 30, and will take place in four countries – St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. The Providence Stadium in Guyana set to host the final on September 30.

Man Utd submit offer to sign £58m ace who’s reportedly spoken to Amorim

Turning their attention towards the January transfer window in the middle of another tough spell of form, Manchester United are reportedly pressing to sign a defensive reinforcement who has already spoken to Ruben Amorim.

Man Utd transfer news

Shocked by Wolverhampton Wanderers and embarrassed by Bournemouth at Old Trafford, Manchester United desperately need the January transfer window to arrive, especially since they sit eight points clear of the dropzone in what should not even be a concern for a side of their stature heading into the second half of the season. With Newcastle United up next, however, things don’t get any easier.

Man Utd on red alert as January opportunity emerges to sign "fantastic" ace

The Red Devils could land a bargain deal…

1 ByTom Cunningham Dec 29, 2024

Even in the middle of such a run, it doesn’t look as though Marcus Rashford will be granted a return after being exiled by Amorim. Yet to be impressed by the Carrington graduate, the new manager looks set to show Rashford the door and leave some of Europe’s biggest clubs circling around his signature when 2025 arrives.

Instead, the focus looks set to be on finding players who suit his 3-4-2-1 system to finally turn things around at Old Trafford, which may well see a vital defensive reinforcement arrive.

According to RMC Sport, via Sport Witness, Manchester United have submitted an opening offer to sign Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain in the winter window. SW also relayed reports from Portugal that the left-back has already spoken to Amorim in what was reportedly a convincing conversation.

Having been not impressed at PSG’s new contract proposal, Mendes’ current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2026. Whether that hands United the chance to land a cut-price deal remains to be seen, but it could certainly accelerate any transfer.

"Explosive" Mendes could be instant upgrade

A player who thrived under Amorim at Sporting Club to earn a deserved move to PSG, Mendes, valued at £58m, seemingly has the chance to work under his former manager at Manchester United in what would be the biggest move of his career yet. The left-back could be an instant upgrade too, given how well he knows the new system and how much of an attacking threat he provides compared to Diogo Dalot.

Still just 22 years old, the best is yet to come for Mendes as Manchester United look to become the ultimate benefactor in continued rise to the top of European football.

Replacing Luke Shaw feels more and more important for those at Old Trafford, with patience slowly running thin over his ability to avoid consistent injury setbacks. Dubbed “explosive” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Mendes should be high up on the list of candidates to replace the England international as early as the January transfer window.

Arsenal in the race to sign £42m sensation who’s "very similar" to Gyokeres

The last few days haven’t been particularly enjoyable for the Arsenal faithful.

Mikel Arteta’s side dropped more points in the Premier League thanks to a 1-1 draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion and then lost the first leg of their League Cup semi-final against Newcastle United 2-0 at home.

Both games made it abundantly clear that the Gunners are in desperate need of some attacking reinforcements this year, and one of the forwards they have been consistently linked with over the last six months is Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres.

However, while that may be unlikely given his mammoth release clause, the North Londoners have been linked with another young striker this week who has been compared to the free-scoring Swede.

Arsenal target up-and-coming striker

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Arsenal are one of several teams interested in Sporting CP’s young striker, Conrad Harder.

Conrad Harder for Sporting Club.

Alongside the Gunners, Bailey has revealed that fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and West Ham United are just some of the other teams keen on bringing the promising poacher to England as soon as this month, despite only joining the Lisbon outfit in the summer.

Interestingly, despite there being a release clause worth €80m – £67m – in his contract, the report has revealed that it would take an offer of around €50m, which is about £42m, to tempt the Portuguese giants into selling.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given how well Harder has been playing this season and the comparisons to Gyokeres, it’s one worth fighting for.

How Harder compares to Gyokeres

Now, the first thing to clear up is that, as Harder is still just 19 years old and in his first campaign with Sporting, it would be unjust to expect him to match Gyokeres’ frankly absurd level of output over the course of the full season.

However, the young Dane certainly isn’t goal-shy and has already racked up a reasonably impressive haul of seven goals and three assists in 22 first-team appearances for the club.

Moreover, what makes that already great rate of return even more impressive is the fact that he’s achieved it in just 718 minutes, which works out to an average of a goal involvement every 71.8 minutes.

For context, the former Coventry City star has racked up a haul of 31 goals and six assists in 2480 minutes of first-team action, equating to a slightly better average of a goal involvement every 67 minutes.

With that said, what are the other similarities between the two Scandinavian strikers, aside from their outstanding ability in front of goal that is.

Well, according to respected analyst Ben Mattinson, who actually described the teenager as “very similar” to the Stockholm-born star, the pair share “running power, physicality and powerful ball-striking.”

However, he does preface that, as things stand, the youngster is “much more one-footed,” although, given his current rate of output as an understudy, that does not seem to be a massive problem.

Ultimately, while Arsenal fans would understandably rather their club went out and splashed the big bucks on the utterly sublime Gyokeres this year, that seems increasingly unlikely.

Therefore, if Arteta and Co want to continue future-proofing the squad and sign a very similar player to the Swede for millions less, then securing Harder’s services could be the right move – so long as someone else doesn’t beat them to it.

Birmingham's high-fliers feel the G-force as Hampshire hit the brakes

Runaway campaign comes to a crashing halt as Vince, McDermott set stage

David Hopps07-Jul-2022

Ben McDermott scored a 36-ball 61•Getty Images

Hampshire 186 for 6 (McDermott 61, Brathwaite 4-30) beat Birmingham Bears 82 (Fuller 4-17) by 104 runsBirmingham were the bullies of the North Group. They reached 200 in half of their 14 matches, overpowering most of their opponents at will. But the 15,000 or so who came to Edgbaston at such short notice for this Vitality Blast quarter-final with their anticipation whetted found the bullies receiving their come-uppance in no uncertain manner as Hampshire routed them with a 104-run win.Hampshire’s 186 for 6 was decent, founded upon an opening stand of 91 in 9.1 overs from James Vince and Ben McDermott – Vince, 31 from 22, the slightly sulky stylist, McDermott, 61 from 36, after a careful start as pugnacious as he has been all summer. But they bowled with great intelligence, too, finding more purchase from the pitch than Birmingham did and making their big-hitting batting line-up seem ponderous and one-dimensional as they dismissed them in only 13.3 overs. For the second successive season, Hampshire have repaired a potentially disastrous start in South Group to reach Finals Day yet again. Group form, and home advantage, both in Yorkshire’s defeat of Surrey 24 hours earlier, and here at Edgbaston, has so far been immaterial. This season’s sequence of big scores at Edgbaston suggested Hampshire’s score was around par, and a sun-drenched crowd sat back for the expected onslaught. But perhaps a clue to the contrary lay two pitches away – the surface on which Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root put India to the sword in the Test. The groundstaff have had limited preparation time and Hampshire found just enough seam and swing to place pressure on Birmingham that they were unable to withstand.Birmingham, who had shown their propensity for wholesale collapse when they were dismissed for 101 at Edgbaston by Yorkshire earlier in the season, had another bad night. They lost three wickets in the Powerplay. Paul Stirling was deceived by an excellent back-of-the-hand slower ball by Nathan Ellis, the Australian seamer who left Punjab Kings in the IPL for Hampshire but who has had an uneventful campaign. Alex Davies was bowled by Brad Wheal’s first ball, still on the move as he attempted a ramp shot and lost his middle stump. Sam Hain, who would have been run out on 5 had Tom Prest hit direct from extra cover, tried to charge Wheal and picked out deep midwicket; such advances down the wicket have been a key element in Hain lifting his strike rate this season, but Wheal appeared to read his intentions.James Fuller’s stock has never been higher. With bat and ball, he has been an influential figure in Hampshire’s recovery. He prevented any middle-overs recovery with a spell of 4 for 17. Adam Hose, who can pepper deep midwicket at will if he has chance to free his arms, was expertly yorked. Chris Benjamin, of similar mould, was presented with a full, wide delivery and hauled it inexpertly to mid-on. Carlos Brathwaite took a view at 64 for 6 and two balls later he was walking back to the pavilion, too, as he holed out at mid-on. The fourth was Dan Mousley: an offside slice. The rest was just a matter of time.Hampshire’s innings had started without a care in the world, only to come to a sudden halt. There are people on the internet who are obsessed with how much deceleration a human body can stand. it’s not the fall that gets you, just the sudden change in G-force at the end, although some scientists have it that you are better facing backwards.Hampshire tested the theory. They decelerated suddenly – from 93 without loss in 9.1 overs when the innings threatening to head off into outer space, co-pilots McDermott and Vince at the helm, as if Babylon Zoo by Spaceman was blaring them forward, to 94 for 2 off 9.3. They hit a force of nature name of Carlos Brathwaite. Hampshire eventually recovered. For the songsters among you, that is more than can be said for Babylon Zoo.Brathwaite has been given the captaincy of the Bears at the age of 33 and he did not want to miss a Finals Day on his home ground. Hampshire had broken Birmingham’s left-arm spinner, Danny Briggs, who spilled 33 from his first two overs, and he needed to act. He resorted, almost without variation, to the wide yorker and his figures of 4 for 30 suggested he resorted to it well.Vince’s eyes were popping out of his head when he was dismissed, caught at the wicket, but not because of deceleration, only because he felt the noise was his bat scraping against the ground. He left with a mournful expression engaged. McDermott followed three balls later, dragging on as he tried to run the ball to third man.Prest soon departed lbw, reverse-sweeping a flatter delivery from Mousley, but Joe Weatherley and Ross Whiteley restored the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 69 in 39 balls. While Brathwaite honed his wide yorkers, Hampshire made progress at the other end with Briggs and Lintott conceding 76 between them from six overs. Birmingham held some daunting skiers in the closing stages as they tried to keep a foothold in the game. From the final ball of the innings, Brathwaite hurled himself to his right at the bowler’s end to prevent an overthrow off his bowling. He had reason to feel that he had done everything to keep the Bears in the match, but it turned out that he had done nothing of the sort. It is Hampshire who will return to Edgbaston in nine days’ time to face the winners of Saturday’s match-up between Somerset and Derbyshire.

Calvert-Lewin upgrade: Moyes pushing for dream Everton signing in £10m CF

Everton were defeated at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening, David Moyes’ return spoiled by poor finishing and a lack of control.

Aston Villa claimed a 1-0 victory through Ollie Watkins’ strike, condemning Everton to a third straight Premier League defeat. The Blues have also blanked across five of the past six top-flight matches.

Moyes will of course know that he has a massive task in front of him; he will be under no illusions about Everton’s issues and the importance of fixing the attacking problems that have blunted the Merseysiders’ blade.

But the lack of confidence and genuine creative quality are glaring concerns. It goes without saying that the new owners, The Friedkin Group, need to authorise a first-team signing before January is up.

More Everton misery up front

Away from the on-field issues, Everton’s depth has been cruelly damaged through Armando Broja’s prognosis after the on-loan Chelsea forward injured his ankle in the FA Cup against Peterborough, resulting in an expected three-month layoff.

Armando Broja for Everton

It heightens the need for a new striker, especially since Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still producing such abject results as Everton’s chief centre-forward.

If the match against Villa served as an audition, Calvert-Lewin failed miserably. That’s now 16 Premier League matches in succession without a goal or an assist for an outfit struggling against the tractor pull of the relegation zone.

Moyes’ saving grace will centre around his side’s aggression and desire, creating three big chances to Villa’s four, as per Sofascore.

Calvert-Lewin squandered two of those chances. Out of contract at the end of the season, he’s got to be replaced.

Everton looking at Calvert-Lewin replacement

As per The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, Everton are in the race for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, who earned his stripes with the Finch Farm academy before leaving in September 2023.

With a reported £10m price tag, Everton would need to swallow some pride in bringing Cannon back to the fold, but really this is an affordable figure for a rising star at the season’s midpoint.

The Foxes recently recalled Cannon from his successful loan spell with Stoke City in the Championship as they look to profit from his upsurged performances. Given that the bulk of the competition stems from the second tier, Everton might feel they can triumph in engineering a reunion.

Why Everton should sign Tom Cannon

Cannon only made three first-team appearances for Everton before being sold to Leicester in a deal worth roughly £7.5m. He’d previously impressed during a loan stint with Preston North End but Sean Dyche didn’t view the young star as the solution up front. If only he did.

The aptly-named number nine has hit a rich vein of goalscoring form with Stoke this season, bagging nine goals from 22 matches, including an incredible four-goal haul against Portsmouth at the start of October, leading Potters correspondent Pete Smith to hail the “insane” effort.

An active and intelligent player, Cannon’s ball-striking ability allows him to rifle shots past goalkeepers, using his movement and pace to shimmy into openings, into gaps between the lines.

A loping gait and charged confidence from his performances at the Bet 365 Stadium could be exactly what Moyes needs to front his system, for Cannon has only missed nine big chances – the same as his goal tally – across the 2024/25 Championship campaign, as per Sofascore, also averaging 0.5 key passes and 4.4 successful duels per game.

Calvert-Lewin, conversely, has missed 11 big chances in the Premier League this term, though the 27-year-old, of course, has only scored two goals.

What to do? One thing’s for certain: Everton cannot afford to emerge from the January transfer market without fresh quality at number nine.

Lest we forget that 17th-placed Ipswich Town host Brighton & Hove Albion tonight and a victory would knock Everton closer toward the precipice, dangerously so.

There are mitigating circumstances (there always are). Dwight McNeil has missed the past six matches with a knee injury and his playmaking quality has been sorely missed. He’s created nine big chances from 13 top-flight fixtures this year, averaging an impressive 2.5 key passes per game. Still, ‘DCL’ has toiled to no avail.

A younger and more dynamic striker in Cannon could be the solution – and one who knows the club at that. The 5 foot 11 ace ranks among the top 19% of centre-forwards competing in the Championship this season for clearances and the top 14% for aerial duels won per 90, as per FBref.

That latter metric likely makes for the most compelling reading. Calvert-Lewin, for all his faults, is a monstrous focal point in the air, with former teammate Richarlison once even claiming “he has an incredible leap on him, Like Cristiano Ronaldo.”

It’s more than a little food for thought, right? Everton have a strong defensive base and an industrious unit operating under an industrious manager who will hopefully expand the outfit’s horizons over the coming months.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

But Calvert-Lewin cannot be allowed to continue to fester in the final third, and with Broja ruled out and potentially called back to Stamford Bridge, Cannon could be the one to fire Everton back into the limelight.

Jack White claims maiden five-wicket haul for just 14 runs to skittle Lancashire

Washington completes five-for on debut but Northants lead by 128

Northamptonshire seamer Jack White claimed his maiden five-wicket haul for just 14 runs as Lancashire were skittled for 132 on day two of this LV= County Championship match at Northampton.White, 30, had a late introduction to professional cricket, making his first-class debut in 2020 after coming through the Minor Counties system in Cumbria and Cumberland. He caught the eye of former Steelbacks assistant coach Phil Rowe during a highly successful season playing grade cricket in New South Wales in 2017-18 which led to a contract at Wantage Road.Making the most of the opportunity of his run in the Championship side this season, he set the tone against Lancashire, striking in the second over of the innings and running through their dangerous top order in 13 overs of attacking, disciplined bowling. He benefited too from humid, overcast conditions as Lancashire lost five wickets for 27 runs either side of lunch. Josh Bohannon top scored with 31.Northamptonshire took a first-innings lead of 103 and by close of play had reached 25 for one in their second dig before bad light and rain stopped play.In the morning, Lancashire made short work of picking up the last three Northamptonshire wickets for the addition of just 17 runs. Washington Sundar celebrated a five-fer on debut when he had Lewis McManus caught at deep midwicket for 61. Meanwhile Luke Wood knocked over White’s stumps and dismissed Simon Kerrigan thanks to a sensational diving catch by Rob Jones who ran across from short leg to take the ball behind the stumps..When Lancashire batted, Northamptonshire’s seamers found plenty of movement through the air and off the pitch. White had early reward for his work, getting the ball to jag back and trap Luke Wells lbw playing back in his crease.Keaton Jennings rode his luck early, playing and missing against the seaming ball and edging through the slips for four. He gradually opened up his scoring options, playing some pleasant drives and greeted the introduction of Kerrigan just before lunch by flicking a full toss away for four. He fell next ball though, caught at slip, as he pushed at a wide delivery outside off-stump.White was back in the wickets column immediately after lunch when Croft was adjudged leg before and added a third scalp when Jones chopped on attempting to cut.Bohannon was circumspect early in his innings, a punch through extra cover a rare sign of aggression as he navigated the seaming ball. He started to play his shots as the afternoon wore on, smashing Tom Taylor to the cover boundary and dispatching Kerrigan over long-on for six. He had a reprieve when Ricardo Vasconcelos put down a low chance at slip, but eventually fell to White for 31, perhaps unlucky to be adjudged lbw to a ball that looked like it would have missed leg stump.Washington became White’s fifth victim when he too fell lbw to leave Lancashire in all sorts of trouble at 77 for 6.Lancashire skipper Dane Vilas attempted a counterattack, aiming a few lusty blows. He had reached 18 when he nicked behind off Taylor. The end came quickly. Wood top-edged a Ben Sanderson delivery and was caught behind, while Rob Keogh chipped in with two wickets to wrap up the innings. When Northamptonshire batted again Vasconcelos continued his poor run of form since returning from injury. He survived consecutive lbw appeals and hit back with a couple of boundaries before bottom-edging a ball from Will Williams to substitute keeper George Lavelle. Emilio Gay and Will Young survived against a seaming ball under dark skies to close out the day with a lead of 128.
