Afghanistan cricket plunged into crisis as ICC funds-flow hits snags

ICC money hasn’t reached the country because of international sanctions following the Taliban’s takeover last year

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is staring at a financial crisis, with ICC funds not able to reach the board after July 2021.Since the Taliban’s return to political power in August 2021, international sanctions have made it increasingly difficult to send money into the country. ESPNcricinfo understands that while the ACB has completed pending payments to players at all levels as well as the coaching staff, it will be able to pay only 30% of the salaries to employees and other staff working in Afghanistan.ACB officials based in Dubai have been talking to the ICC on the matter, and it is understood that attempts are on to find alternative routes – including via registered NGOs – to get the money into Afghanistan, but no solution has been found yet. It is understood that the ICC has told ACB that money cannot be moved into Afghanistan without an approved regulatory mechanism in place.Afghanistan became Full Members of the ICC in 2017, which entitled them to enhanced distribution of funds from the ICC revenues, like other Full Members. According to the ICC’s funds-disbursement model, the ACB was expected to get around US$ 40 million for the 2016-23 commercial rights cycle based on projected ICC revenues of $ 2.7 billion. However, with the ICC’s projected revenues coming down, that has been adjusted to around $4.8 million per year.

The ACB last received a payment* of $2.5 from the ICC in July last year. ICC payments are made to Full Members twice a year – in January and in July. To deal with the situation, especially when it comes to getting the national team to travel around the world for tournaments and other series, the board has arranged UAE residency visas – for about two dozen players. In fact, the UAE connection has been a useful one for the ACB. In some instances, ESPNcricinfo has learnt, when Afghanistan have hosted “visiting” teams in the Emirates, the ICC has made payments to vendors on the ACB’s behalf. The money is adjusted against the funds ACB is meant to get from the ICC.When Afghanistan have hosted teams in the Emirates, the ICC has made payments to vendors on the ACB’s behalf•AFP

In Afghanistan, domestic cricket activities continue. Last week, the ACB kicked off the fifth edition of the first-class Ahmad Shah Abdali tournament with five teams competing at two venues, in Khost and Nangarhar provinces. Next up is the Ghazi Amanullah Khan one-day tournament, starting in late November. All the players and support staff involved in those competitions will expect to be paid, but payments are likely to be delayed.Unfortunately for the ACB, ICC revenue is its major source of funds, since no international team travels to Afghanistan for bilateral assignments, and the ACB’s T20 tournament, the Shpageeza, is not broadcast beyond the country. After the Taliban takeover last year, there were concerns that Afghanistan’s Full-Member status could be taken away by the ICC because of the Taliban’s position on women in cricket, that they are not allowed to play. Subsequently, Cricket Australia took a stance on the matter and a scheduled Test with Afghanistan [in Australia] was called off. Afghanistan will, however, take part in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, as they had in 2021 in the UAE. Also, in the latest ICC future tours programme, Australia have two bilateral commitments against Afghanistan – an away T20I series in August 2024, and a tour of one Test and three T20Is in Australia in July 2026.

Worth even more than Schlupp: Rodgers should’ve cashed in on Celtic star

The deadline has come and gone, with questions left to ponder as to quite what to make of the transfer window from a Celtic perspective.

Yes, the headline may have been the glorious return of former hero Jota – who marked the start of his second spell by sealing the win at Motherwell at the weekend – but has that £8m switch somewhat blinded from an otherwise poor period of business?

There’s no denying the delight at seeing Celtic’s new number seven back at Parkhead, ready to rip Premiership defences to shreds once again, as he did so successfully under Ange Postecoglou.

And yet, there is an argument that the Hoops squad is now weaker than when the window started, having allowed 85-goal sensation, Kyogo Furuhashi, to join struggling Ligue 1 side, Rennes, on a £10m deal.

Celtic'sKyogoFuruhashi celebrates with the trophy after winning the League Cup

That mid-season exit would have been swallowed had an adequate replacement been brought in, yet Brendan Rodgers has been left empty-handed, forced to rely on £9.5m man Adam Idah for the remainder of the season – a player who boasts just six Premiership goals this term.

Kieran Tierney is, of course, set to make his own emotional homecoming in the near future, yet with a January loan switch having been ruled out for the Scotsman, the Hoops were forced to settle for another Premier League talent instead…

What Jeffrey Schlupp brings to Celtic

Jeffrey Schlupp signing on loan from Crystal Palace in the last knockings of deadline day was unlikely to have been on anyone’s transfer bingo card, with the versatile 32-year-old joining on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

A former Premier League winner at Leicester City, the veteran asset does provide a wealth of experience for Rodgers’ side, albeit while having failed to start a single game in all competitions in 2024/25 to date.

Jeffrey Schlupp

As Rodgers stated, Schlupp is “a fantastic guy, someone with real high-level experience and with great attributes including power, pace and versatility”, yet after the excitement surrounding a potential early return for Tierney, this last-gasp move feels like something of a let down.

Not that the Ghanaian should be judged before he’s taken to the field, however, while his ability to operate at left-back or in a more advanced role should certainly make him a useful asset.

With Alex Valle having unfortunately returned to parent club Barcelona to subsequently sign for Cesc Fabregas’ Como, it will likely then be a straight battle between Schlupp and Greg Taylor on the left flank, ahead of Tierney’s return this summer.

Greg Taylor's market value at Celtic

Something of a marmite figure at Parkhead, Taylor now resides in a precarious position in Glasgow.

Market Movers

Currently the first-choice left-back, the 27-year-old will seemingly be aware that he will likely lose that crown in just a matter of months, when Tierney officially signs on a free transfer.

It is perhaps no surprise then that the Scotland international is seemingly contemplating a free transfer switch of his own, having yet to extend his contract which expires in June.

Aston Villa'sLeonBaileyin action with Celtic's Greg Taylor

Rodgers did previously hint that getting the full-back to agree terms was a “priority”, albeit while then admitting in December that he is aware that it is one of Taylor’s “last big contracts”, such is the point in his career.

A straight swap then could occur, in essence, if Tierney arrives and Taylor walks out the door, although it would be of frustration to lose the latter man for nothing, particularly considering his current market value.

As per Transfermarkt, the former Kilmarnock man – who signed on a £3m deal back in 2019 as Tierney’s replacement – is worth €7m (£6m), thus placing him ahead of even new man, Schlupp, who is deemed to be worth €6m (£5m) at present.

There is perhaps a world in which Rodgers and co should’ve cashed in on Taylor either in January or last summer, in order to try and earn a profit on their initial investment, yet having seen Valle depart and allowed Alexandro Bernabei to move on permanently, the situation is now as it is.

A player capable of whipping in an assist as he did for Luke McCowan against Dundee, while also guilty of lapses like his errant pass in the League Cup final, the £15k-per-week asset remains an enigma.

If he does choose to move on at the end of the campaign, he can look back on his part in a glittering period of domestic dominance under both Postecoglou and Rodgers. As for the club itself, however, they may regret not cashing in on such a servant when they potentially had the chance.

Pakistan bowlers boss Netherlands to keep their hopes alive

Netherlands could only manage 91 before Rizwan guided Pakistan home in the small chase

Pakistan’s fast bowlers proved too hot for Netherlands on a bouncy surface in Perth, giving them a comfortable six-wicket win and their first points of the T20 World Cup. Overwhelmed by the Pakistan bowling attack, Netherlands could post only 91 for 9 after choosing to bat and eventually lost their third game in a row in the Super 12s.Netherlands’ batters were tested by short balls, with Bas de Leede copping a bouncer on the grille which forced him to retire hurt. Shaheen Shah Afridi took 1 for 19, Haris Rauf cranked his pace up to finish with 1 for 10, Naseem Shah conceded only 11 runs in four overs while Mohammad Wasim impressed with his back-to-back wicket-taking yorkers. Shadab Khan complemented the seamers, his wristspin accounting for three wickets. The sub-100 chase was expectedly comfortable for Pakistan, with two key cogs to their batting line-up getting among the runs. After Babar Azam fell cheaply, Mohammad Rizwan (49) and No. 3 Fakhar Zaman (20) – the latter returning to the XI after a knee injury kept him away for seven weeks – put together a 37-run stand. Pakistan closed out the chase with 37 balls to spare, which was also their very first T20I win on Australian soil. The win for Pakistan, their first after two last-ball losses to start the World Cup, keeps them in contention for semi-final spot, but fate is no longer in their hands. Not only do they need to win their last two games – against Bangladesh and South Africa – but also need results from other Group 2 games going their way.A new-ball test of fire
The Pakistan quicks stepped up with the new ball for the third game in a row, with Afridi earning his first new-ball wicket in the competition too. He went short to opener Stephan Myburgh, drawing a top-edged pull from the left-hand batter. The extra bounce induced that error, and the other pace bowlers caught on to that quickly. The seamers got the ball to rise awkwardly while operating at more than 140kph, and the No. 3 de Leede faced the brunt of it when a Rauf short ball left him with a bleeding cut under his right eye. De Leede was later replaced by concussion substitute Logan van Beek.Shadab owns the middle overs
Pakistan conceded only two boundaries in the powerplay, allowing Netherlands to score only 19 runs in the first six overs. Shadab was introduced by Babar as soon as the field restrictions were lifted.Shadab had finished his spell against Zimbabwe with two wickets off his last two balls and against Netherlands, he struck off his first ball, getting No. 4 Tom Cooper to pull a loose half-tracker to deep midwicketWhile that was a lucky break, the next dismissal wasn’t with Shadab’s googly turning in sharply and pinning opener Max O’Dowd in front of middle and leg stumps. That wicket had Netherlands reeling at 34 for 3 after ten overs. The captain Scott Edwards then looked to build a partnership with Colin Ackermann, but the boundaries were hard to come by, as they relied more on the singles and twos. However, the 35-run fourth-wicket partnership off 37 balls was ended by Shadab when Ackermann missed the reverse lap and was hit in front of off stump. He finished with 3 for 22.Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan with 49 runs•Getty Images

The quicks wrap it up
With the final quarter of the innings left, Edwards tried to play some innovative shots, but his scoop off Naseem went to deep fine leg. Roelof van der Merwe was dismissed next, backing away to Rauf before having his stumps flattened. With Netherlands at 74 for 6 after 17 overs, chances of a big finish appeared slim. The seamers conceded only 17 in the last 18 balls, with Wasim causing most of the damage with his back-to-back yorkers that shattered the stumps of Tim Pringle and Fred Klaassen. Naseem bowled a tight 20th over to finish with an economy of 2.75 in four overs and set Pakistan a target of 92.Runs for Rizwan, Fakhar
After a short delay due to impending rain, the chase began with Babar and Rizwan looking to get back in form with a small target ahead of them. Rizwan raced off the blocks but Babar was run out via a van der Merwe direct hit for 4.Fakhar entered at No. 3, instead of Shan Masood, and played away from his body to find boundaries through the off side. When the Dutch seamers aimed at his pads, he used his wrists to clear the leg-side infield.Even though Fakhar had an injury scare after an awkward dive, he recovered to continue. However, he was dismissed for 20 when he got an outside edge to a ball angling across him, with the wicketkeeper taking a screamer diving to his left.Masood, who came in at No.4, then combined with Rizwan, who hit five fours during his 39-ball 49. However, both batters fell late in the chase, Rizwan one short of his 23rd T20I fifty and Masood one short of the target. That brought Shadab into the middle. He cracked a four to hit the winning runs, and soon after collected the Player-of-the-Match award while still wearing his pads.

Left under Gerrard: Rangers may rue selling star who’s outscoring Danilo

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement is hanging on to his job by the thinnest of threads.

The 1-0 Scottish Cup defeat to Queen’s Park a couple of weeks ago should have been the final straw, yet he was still in charge for the clash against Hearts in the Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Rangers managerPhilippeClementbefore the match

Despite the Light Blues winning 3-1 at Tynecastle, courtesy of two own goals by Jamie McCart, the performance was hardly anything to be proud of.

Not only did Hearts create more big chances (five vs one) and take more shots (21 vs 15) during the game, but they also took more corners (ten vs seven) and made more passes (422 vs 385) during the match than the Ibrox side.

They were certainly extremely lucky to come away from the capital with all three points, that’s for sure.

Several players failed to perform to the levels we have seen over the previous few weeks, notably Hamza Igamane. The striker failed to get a shot on target throughout the game, while completing only 15 passes and taking 49 touches of the ball.

Since his goal against Aberdeen last month, the youngster has been a shadow of his former self in front of goal, failing to score since.

Hamza Igamane

The manager will be hoping Danilo can recover from his injury swiftly to give the Moroccan star a rest, perhaps taking some pressure off of him.

Danilo hasn’t exactly endured the best of times since joining Rangers in the summer of 2023, but when fit, there is plenty to admire about his game.

Danilo’s Rangers statistics

Michael Beale spent a lavish sum of money on signing the Brazilian centre-forward from Feyenoord, around £6m to be exact.

For this outlay, the Ibrox faithful were expecting someone who could slot straight into the starting XI and make a huge difference in the final third.

Danilo

Under Beale, he started just three times for the Gers, scoring just three goals, and it looked as though it was yet another waste of money, especially when he spent weeks on the sidelines after suffering a broken cheekbone in September 2023.

Under Clement, Danilo began to show the form expected of him, netting three goals and grabbing five assists, although disaster struck in December as a knee injury sustained against Hearts kept him out for the remainder of the season.

Despite taking longer than usual to return to full fitness, the 25-year-old scored six goals along with recording three assists between August and the start of January.

Against Aberdeen last month, Danilo suffered a shoulder injury and this has kept him out ever since. These setbacks are hampering any progress the striker is making on the pitch, which in turn, prevents him from building up consistency.

When healthy, there is no doubt Danilo is the finest centre-forward at Ibrox, but he is of no use when on the treatment table.

The Light Blues have sold their fair share of strikers since Steven Gerrard took over way back in 2018. Some have struggled since leaving Glasgow, while others have sparkled, fulfilling their potential outside the pressures faced at Ibrox.

Ryan Hardie certainly belongs in the latter category, enjoying a wonderful career south of the border.

Ryan Hardie's time at Rangers

Hardie came through the youth ranks at Rangers, going on to make his senior debut for the club during their spell in the Championship, scoring twice in just five games in 2014/15.

Spells on loan at Raith Rovers (14 goals), St Mirren (three goals) and Livingston (15 goals) between 2016 and 2019 did allow him to gain plenty of game time at senior level, but it became clear that he wasn’t going to make the grade at Ibrox, despite his talents.

As such, Gerrard sold the Scottish forward to Blackpool for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2019.

Hardie hasn’t looked back since…

Ryan Hardie's record since leaving Rangers

His initial spell with Blackpool was hardly a success, netting just once in 12 appearances for the club, but a move to Plymouth in January 2020 turned out to be a match made in heaven.

Since that move, Hardie has scored an impressive tally of 69 goals in 237 games for the club, helping them secure promotion back to the Championship during the 2022/23 season.

His first in the second tier produced 13 goals in 44 matches as the Pilgrims retained their status in the Championship. While he struggled to get going under Wayne Rooney earlier this term, new coach Miron Muslic has brought out the best in the 27-year-old.

Indeed, across his previous four matches, Hardie has netted five goals, including a stunning winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup a few weeks ago.

Scottish content creator Kai Watson hailed the former Gers striker after the clash against the Premier League title challengers, stating that he is now “thriving” following the change in the dugout.

Overall this season, he has scored seven goals for Plymouth in 29 games, chipping in with two assists.

If he maintains this current form, there is no reason why he cannot break through into double figures, while helping his club move up the table in the process.

These seven goals are also a bigger tally than what Danilo has recorded so far this season. That’s not to say Hardie is better than the Brazilian, which would be rather disingenuous given the circumstances, but it proves that perhaps Gerrard should have given him a chance.

If so, he might have proven the former Liverpool captain wrong and remained as a squad player.

His move down south has worked out better than anyone expected, especially after a rough start at Blackpool.

Where Are They Now

Under Muslic, Hardie has the opportunity to push on and become even better.

Rangers to offer out-of-work 47 y/o the chance to replace Philippe Clement

Rangers are believed to be willing to offer a 47-year-old manager the opportunity to replace Philippe Clement until the end of the season, according to a new update.

Rangers searching for Clement successor

There was an inevitability about Clement’s time in charge at Ibrox coming to an end, following a consistently disappointing run of results this season, especially in the Scottish Premiership. While they are still in the Europa League, it was hard to see things turning around positively enough in the coming weeks and months.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to St Mirren was too much for Rangers’ board to ignore, in a result that means they are still trailing Celtic by 13 points, with the Hoops also losing away to Hibernian over the weekend.

The search is now on to find Clement’s replacement at Ibrox, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on a potential reunion with Steven Gerrard, saying: “At the moment nothing has been decided, so let’s keep all options open. The club is assessing options to replace Clement but nothing direct yet with Gerrard or his camp.”

It looks as though an interim boss will be brought in for the time being, however, potentially until the summer, and an intriguing update has dropped regarding who could come in.

47 y/o handed chance to manage Rangers

According to The Daily Record, Rangers are keen on making former player Barry Ferguson their next manager until the end of this season. The report says that the 47-year-old “will be given the chance to lead the club” leading up until the summer, prior to a permanent long-term boss coming in. In fact, a “whirlwind deal could be completed within 24 hours”, with “talks ongoing” with the popular ex-Gers captain.

Ferguson being named interim boss could be a decision that goes down well at Rangers, considering what a well-liked figure he was during his playing days, winning six Scottish Premiership titles and being named Player of the Year on three separate occasions.

Granted, the Scot hasn’t exactly had a memorable managerial career to date, most recently being in charge of Alloa Athletic until February 2022, meaning he hasn’t had a leading manager’s job of note for three years. That said, Rangers need a feel-good factor to return between now and the end of the season, and Ferguson could provide that, with the supporters feeling that they have one of their own in the dugout.

He knows the club inside out, and would no doubt show a huge amount of passion for the job, and if he can work wonders in charge, such as going far in the Europa League, he could even put himself in contention for the permanent job once the summer arrives.

49ers will love him: Rangers must hire "fantastic" manager who knows Wilson

As pressure mounts on Philippe Clement, the new 49ers ownership group at Rangers should look to hire “fantastic” out of work manager as replacement.

ByBen Gray Feb 24, 2025

There may be some fans who want to see a more proven manager come in temporarily, but the positives of bringing in Ferguson are clear to see, taking the time to get the permanent successor right this summer.

He will be announced as a new signing by MI Emirates, the Reliance-owned franchise in the inaugural ILT20 in the UAE, in the coming days. Like Little and Stirling, Tucker will miss the T20Is from January 12-15 but will play the ODIs from January 18-23.Tucker’s involvement in the ILT20 is the latest test for Cricket Ireland’s selection policy, which has started to incorporate scope for players to skip certain bilateral series in order to make the most of the “development opportunities” offered by franchise leagues.Historically, Ireland have only tended to grant No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to centrally-contracted players when leagues do not clash with their international schedule. But the growth of their fixture list, the increasing number of opportunities available in franchise cricket, and the new prominence of their leading players suggests their stance will soften in order to ensure they are not tempted to turn down central contracts and go freelance.Little, the left-arm seamer who is skipping the Zimbabwe T20Is to play for Pretoria Capitals in the SA20, is the player in the highest demand. Last week, he was signed on a lucrative ‘platinum’ deal by Multan Sultans at the PSL draft, and he is available at a base price of INR 50 lakh (£50,000 approx.) in Friday’s IPL auction.ESPNcricinfo understands he is likely to be made available for the duration of the IPL if signed – although a decision would depend on Ireland’s progress in the ODI Super League. If results elsewhere mean they are still mathematically in contention for automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup, he would be expected to return home for Ireland’s final Super League series against Bangladesh in May.Left-arm quick Josh Little is another Ireland player wanted by T20 leagues•Associated Press

“Cricket Ireland’s view on franchise cricket involvement by our contracted players is that it’s Ireland-first by default,” Richard Holdsworth, Ireland’s long-serving performance director, said. “However, on a case-by-case basis, where an opportunity to leverage a franchise league offer may provide a benefit to the Irish set-up or player development, we will consider flexibility in selection.”It goes without saying that proximity to major tournaments or where the head coach would prefer to have the players available for international matches, that will be the priority.”The recent success of our senior squad on the world stage has attracted the attention of a range of franchise tournaments. We take this as both a positive sign of our trajectory as a cricket nation and long overdue recognition for the talent on this island.”This month alone eight of our senior squad have been involved in franchise leagues, and we expect the demand for Irish talent will only grow over coming years.”Andrew White, Ireland’s national selector, added: “The selectors have recognised the development opportunity for Lorcan Tucker in taking up the franchise T20 tournament opportunity next month given the location and quality of players involved.”While he had previously been named in the Irish squad for the Zimbabwe tour, we considered that the chance opportunity for Lorcan to play in the UAE franchise league would give him an experience that could greatly benefit his game, while allowing us an opportunity to expand our international talent pool.”Tucker has been replaced in the squad by Ross Adair, the spin-bowling allrounder and older brother of Mark Adair. He previously enjoyed a professional rugby union career with Ulster and described his call-up as a “huge honour”.
