Brighton beat Crystal Palace for the second time this season on Saturday, and Roy Hodgson’s performance on the day was nothing short of abysmal.

Selhurst Park has seen just three league victories for the Eagles all year, and Saturday’s clash against Brighton didn’t exactly go to plan either.

The Seagulls took the lead in the first half when Glenn Murray capitalised on a mistake from James Tomkins, but Luka Milivojevic levelled from the spot for the hosts.

Anthony Knockaert decided the outcome of the match with a stunning strike though, cutting inside Patrick van Aanholt and curling a wonderful effort into the far top corner.

While the visitors deserve immense credit for taking the few chances that fell their way, the blame for the Eagles should be place entirely on Hodgson, whose team selection and game management were downright absurd.

The wrong midfield

It didn’t take a genius to work out that Brighton would set up defensively in south London, but Hodgson clearly didn’t figure it out.

His side had 63 per cent of the ball, eight more corners and spent most of the match in the opposition’s half, per Whoscored, yet the boss opted for a midfield three without an ounce of creativity.

With all due respect, Milivojevic, Jeffrey Schlupp and James McArthur wouldn’t break down a deep, organised defence if you gave them all year, but Hodgson waited until the 77th minute to introduce Max Meyer.

A 4-2-3-1 formation, with Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyate offering Meyer the freedom to roam around in the number ten role, could have caused absolute havoc between the Brighton lines of defence.

Ridiculous decisions

If the gaffer’s starting XI and system were completely wrong, his in-game decisions were even worse.

Aforementioned, he took way too long to make changes. On top of that, when the change eventually did come, it coincided with a switch to a 4-4-2, a switch that ultimately took Palace’s best player out of the game.

Sticking Zaha out wide in a 4-4-2 formation in the hope of launching crosses in towards two strikers is the sign of a manager going backwards, not forwards.

Change required

With the likes of Michy Batshuayi, Zaha, Milivojevic, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mamadou Sakho, the Eagles have some of the best players in the league outside of the top six.

As long as Hodgson is at the helm though, they will continue to play uninspiring, rigid football.

The ex-England boss did a superb job rescuing the club from the mess left by Frank de Boer, but providing he does little more than steady the ship until the end of the season, he should be sacked this summer.

Martin Dubravka is reportedly attracting interest from Juventus and several Premier League clubs, so should Newcastle cash in on the shot-stopper?

What’s the word?

As reported by Chronicle Live, the Magpies have begun talks with Dubravka over a new contract.

The 30 year-old’s agent has confirmed that Juventus would like to sign him though, as well as multiple teams within England.

“We can confirm that Martin belongs to the Juventus scout department’s list of long-term players,” his agent told Czech news outlet Ruik, as reported by Chronicle Live.

“However, we must mention that it is not only monitored by Pavel Nedved’s Juventus, but there are also Premier League clubs. Our personal tip with my brother is that Martin stays in England.

“Our effort, but also Newcastle’s endeavour, is to negotiate a new contract at the end of this season, as Martin came to Newcastle as a virtually unknown Czech league player, but quickly became a major player of the entire team and already has an excellent reputation throughout the English league.”

Blessing in disguise

Judging from his agent’s comments, Dubravka is clearly happy to stay on Tyneside, where he became somewhat of an instant cult hero due to his performances last season.

He hasn’t been anywhere near as solid this campaign though, making silly mistakes at Tottenham and Wolves, both of which cost the Magpies crucial points.

He is an excellent shot-stopper, but it is more than possible that last season’s incredible purple patch was merely the result of confidence and momentum after such a stunning debut against Manchester United.

The Slovakian has now reverted to the mean, and if a giant club like Juventus came in with a ridiculous offer it would surely be very hard to refuse.

Given that experienced stoppers like Ben Foster, Joe Hart and Lukasz Fabianski were all scooped up by other Premier League sides for pennies last summer, it would not be difficult to replace the Slovakian and re-invest his transfer fee in other areas of the squad.

Selling to a rival from within England would be a foolish move, but when or if Juventus come calling, cashing in on the struggling shot-stopper could be a blessing in disguise.

West Ham United edged a seven-goal thriller at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon as they scored late to beat Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield led 3-1 in the English capital, but the Hammers scored three times in the final 15 minutes to complete a remarkable turnaround.

It was not the best defensive performance from Manuel Pellegrini’s side, but the West Ham fans were pleased with the display of Aaron Cresswell.

Cresswell – on £50,000 a week – has previously been criticised by the club’s supporters, but he assisted Angelo Ogbonna for his team’s second against the Terriers.

Meanwhile, according to WhoScored, the 29-year-old, who finished the match with the captain’s armband, had three shots, won four aerial duels and made three tackles during his 90 minutes on the field.

Cresswell’s form has not always been the best this season, but it would be fair to say that the West Ham fans were pleased with what they saw on Saturday afternoon.

QPR finally gave their fans something to – somewhat – be happy about as they came back from two down to draw away at Hull on Saturday, having been the Championship’s punching bag for the last couple of months.

The result was much-needed after loss to Rotherham, in which Darnell Furlong gave away a free-kick in the dying seconds, from which their visitors were allowed to score a winner.

The young right-back has, like many of his teammates, been poor in recent weeks so the surely nearing return of Angel Rangel to the ranks will be a huge relief to fans.

أفادت تقارير صحفية إنجليزية، أن نادي مانشستر سيتي يقترب من حسم صفقة الدولي الأرجنتيني، نيكولاس تاليافيكو، الظهير الأيسر لنادي أياكس الهولندي.

تاليافيكو كان هدفًا لـ برشلونة خلال فترة الانتقالات الصيفية، وسط صراع مع مانشستر سيتي ويوفنتوس، ولكن في النهاية استمر اللاعب مع النادي الهولندي.

صحيفة “ذا صن” الإنجليزية، أفادت بأنه من المقرر أن يعود مانشستر سيتي إلى اللاعب في يناير، حيث من المقرر ان يكلف نيكولاس خزائن سيتي، 20 مليون جنية إسترليني.

أياكس كان يرغب في الحصول على 35 مليون جنية إسترليني في الصيف الماضي، لكن لم يتبق له سوى أقل من عامين في عقده مع الفريق، كما أن اللاعب مصمم على اللعب في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

Alan Smith is a tragic example of why managers should not gamble with a player’s position.

There have been some truly debatable moments in football over the years; Maradona’s ‘hand of god’, Emmanuel Adebayor’s pitch-length celebration, Suarez’s racism and biting, and finally the bitter transfer of ‘Mr Leeds United’ Alan Smith to Manchester United.

A multidimensional betrayal that cannot simply be boiled down to breaking unwritten footballing law.

You may argue that the kind of heartbreak that hurts the most is the type you least expect: the one that literally slaps you in the face and turns your world around in an instance – the sort Leeds United fans experienced in 2004 when one of their own, a local hero, Alan Smith, left when they needed him the most.

A player they had nurtured and supported – one of their brightest talents in recent years, a sensation and ‘wonderkid’ in every sense of the word – gone in an instant to join the ranks of Manchester United, a club they so vehemently hate.

Smith made 211 appearances for Leeds over a six-year period scoring 52 goals in all competitions – winning the love of the faithful fans with his unbridled commitment, talent and gutsiness. At risk of sounding like someone stuck in the past, he was a “proper striker” – someone who would take great joy in throwing their weight about, snapping, barging, slamming and booting their way around the pitch like it was a cold, mucky Sunday morning.

So what exactly happened when he joined Old Trafford – where did all this spirit and guile go?

First and foremost, the former Leeds man was hampered by Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to play him out of position in a dual attempt to both accommodate Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy and fill the boots of Roy Keane.

Secondly, was the horror injury he suffered after blocking Liverpool’s John Arne Riise shot, which left him with a broken left leg and dislocated ankle aged 25.

An injury Ferguson later described as one of the worst he had ever seen (Mirror).

Smith reflected on the experience telling Mirror Sport: “I knew with the injury it would be touch and go whether I could carry on playing – the surgeon said that.

“It would have been easier to walk away and people remember you as a top Premier League player. But I didn’t want that, because I loved playing football. Your love of it makes you go through the pain barrier.”

He left Manchester United just three years after making his initial move, first joining Newcastle United where he spent five seasons, then slowly making his way down the footballing ladder played for MK Dons and finally Notts County.

“Loads of people would say to me, ‘Why I am bothering?’ Whether I was earning £500-a-week or nothing, if people felt I could still contribute I wanted to keep playing,” he said (Mirror).

“The good people I met lower down the leagues probably drove me on to stay in football longer. But by the end, the day-to-day training was doing more harm than good. I couldn’t compete at a level I felt I could easily before. I get out of bed and can’t walk properly; my ankle is stiff all the time.”

The injury he picked up over a decade ago, and staunchly battled, would eventually cause him to retire in 2018.

وبشأن إمكانية لحاق تير شتيجن بالكلاسيكو أمام ريال مدريد، أتم كومان: “منذ يوم الثلاثاء كان يعمل في الملعب وكل شيء يسير على ما يرام في الوقت الحالي، لا أعتقد أنه سيصل إلى الكلاسيكو، فلا داعي لتحديد موعد، إنه حارس رائع لكننا هادئون، نحن سعداء بعمل نيتو”.
