Shane Long comments prove he is Ralph Hasenhuttl’s kind of player

[ad_pod ]

Shane Long’s record-breaking goal just seven seconds into Southampton’s 1-1 draw with Watford last time out was his third strike in the last four games in what is becoming an incredible turnaround of form from the Irishman, who has previously been struggling to find the net at all.

Regardless of his recent form, the hitman’s future at St Mary’s Stadium is uncertain with his contract running out next summer and he has now spoken about whether he thinks he can secure an extension.

What did he say?

Well, speaking to The Southampton Daily Echo, the 32-year-old said:

“I think with the last four or five performances I’ve put in, there have been some good ones in there.

“I have only got a year left on my contract and I don’t think I’ve earned the right to go knocking on the door and asking for more years.

“It’s hard to validate giving a new deal out if you aren’t getting the goals or the results on the pitch.

“I am working as hard as I can to try and sway it in my direction and if it’s not to be then I will look to pastures new, but I don’t want that.”

A short time for Long to prove himself

With just three games remaining and survival not yet secured, the Saints will be hoping to end the season strongly by producing a hat-trick of high-quality performances. If they are to evade the drop, they may need more goals from the resurgent Long, who is the only Southampton striker to find the net in 2019.

Why should Southampton be more like Dortmund? Find out in the video below…

The number 7 himself knows that he cannot rest on his laurels now and that a couple more goals will go a long way in convincing the hierarchy at St Mary’s to give him a new deal, so expect him to fight not just for three points, but his future too.

This kind of spirit evidenced in Long’s comments is exactly what Ralph Hasenhuttl demands from each and every one of his players and he will surely be impressed with what the forward, who already fits the high-tempo system perfectly, has said.

If Long can continue his fine goalscoring run, it would be a travesty if he isn’t rewarded with a new deal. Let us know in the comments below, Southampton fans, if you think the striker has earned a contract extension.

Benteke will have his head in his hands as Palace linked with assist-shy Josh Murphy

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace and their Premier League rivals Burnley have both set their sights on signing Cardiff City winger Josh Murphy this summer if the Bluebirds go down, and Eagles striker Christian Benteke will surely have his head in his hands at the report.

What’s the word, then?

Well, apparently the south London outfit have been impressed with what they have seen from the 24-year-old this term, despite the Welsh side’s struggles at the foot of the division and the fact he hasn’t been a regular in the starting XI under Neil Warnock.

Football Insider report that Palace are ready to pounce for the attacker who cost £11m from Norwich City last summer, and with Cardiff effectively needing to take six points from their remaining two fixtures relegation is looking almost nailed on.

Roy Hodgson and his men can actually stick the final nail in the coffin when they travel to the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, which would in turn boost their chances of getting Murphy.

Bad news for Benteke

While the wide man seems like a typical Palace signing on paper, Christian Benteke will be tearing his hair out.

Should Crystal Palace keep hold of Max Meyer this summer? Harvey Jones discusses in the video below…

The low on confidence centre-forward, who has been a regular starter in recent weeks and did shine in the win at Arsenal, is in desperate need of a winger who can put chances on a plate to help him get on the goal trail.

Murphy’s stats this season hardly suggest that he is the man to do that, given he has one assist in 27 top-flight outings.

At 24 years of age he still has time on his side to become the finished article at this level, but he is far from at that point as things stand.

With little over a year left on his contract at Selhurst Park and with potential suitors likely being difficult to find this summer, Benteke could easily be with Palace next term.

It is clear to see that he needs consistent wingers to bring the best out of him, and Murphy simply doesn’t fit the bill.

Leeds United: Bielsa must consider reigniting interest in Emiliano Martinez

Leeds United have had their fair share of troubles with the goalkeeping position this season, haven’t they Whites fans?

Having began the year with Jamal Blackman and Bailey Peacock-Farrell as his two main shot-stoppers, Marcelo Bielsa must have been fairly confident that they could provide the necessary levels of performance required to help the club sustain a push for promotion.

However, whereas the former was forced to return to his parent club Chelsea after breaking his leg in November, the latter’s tendency to make mistakes eventually culminated in his Argentine manager taking decisive action in the January transfer window by signing Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid.

Since making his debut for Leeds in a 2-1 victory over Rotherham United, the 32-year-old has been fairly impressive for his new side, keeping five clean sheets in 16 games.

Yet it could be argued that a lack of competition from Peackock-Farrell may be holding back Casilla somewhat as he knows that unless he makes a catastrophic blunder, he will almost certainly be the first name on Bielsa’s team sheet.

Therefore, in order to keep the Spaniard honest next season, the Whites must consider re-igniting their interest in Emiliano Martinez in the summer, a player who they were linked with earlier this year (via the Daily Mail).

With the Argentine keeper’s loan deal with Reading set to expire at the end of the month, reports in the Sun suggest that he is ready to leave Arsenal due to a lack of first-team opportunities at the Emirates.

A commanding presence in goal, Martinez has been one of the main reasons for why the Royals have managed to avoid relegation to the third tier this season.

If the Gunners do indeed put him up for sale when the transfer window reopens in July, Bielsa must do all he can to convince the 26-year-old to relocate to West Yorkshire as he has all the qualities needed to succeed at a higher level.

What do you think Leeds fans? Should Bielsa consider swooping for Martinez in the summer? Or are there other areas that the Argentine needs to prioritise? Let us know below.

Emotions rather than tactics will ultimately decide the Champions League final

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur will play Liverpool in the Champions League final after an astonishing week of results in Europe.

On the chalkboard

Spurs headed into their clash with Ajax with a 1-0 deficit to overturn but fell 2-0 behind in Amsterdam.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men, though, staged an astonishing comeback to win 3-2 away from home, with Lucas Moura scoring a hat-trick. Mauricio Pochettino cried at the full-time whistle, as did much of his coaching staff.

Liverpool were also 3-0 behind on aggregate against Barcelona but produced another exceptional European night at Anfield, winning 4-0 to dump out Lionel Messi and Co. James Milner, like Pochettino, cried on the full-time whistle; Jurgen Klopp swore in a television interview.

The final, then, will surely be one judged on emotion rather than tactical intuition.

Both managers are exceptional at putting their teams together and creating systems within which their players thrive.

But, at the end of the day, both Pochettino and Klopp are emotional men, they wear their hearts on their sleeves and they are completely unafraid to own their feelings in front of millions.

It is inspiring, really, in an era of toxic masculinity but it will be interesting to see how the final will be decided. Will Pochettino stick with the attacking players who have got the club this far? Will he drop Lucas? Will he restore Harry Kane to the XI if he is fit?

Will Klopp stick with Divock Origi? Will Mohamed Salah be back in the team? Will it be an excellent tactical decision that ultimately swings the final one way or the other?

Or will emotion be the overriding factor?

An all-English thriller

Both Liverpool and Spurs are attacking teams at heart and caution will surely be thrown to the wind; this is a final after all.

Klopp and Pochettino are often beaten with the ‘what has he won’ stick.

And yet their first trophies while managing English clubs could well be the Champions League.

Emotions, then, will surely be running high.

If Spurs win, an 11-year trophy drought will be ended and Spurs will win the competition in its current incarnation for the first time.

If Liverpool win, they will collect their sixth European trophy, outlining their elite credentials to millions around the globe.

Whatever happens, expect the tears to flow.

West Ham trying to find out if Mitrovic’s contract contains release clause

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United are exploring the possibility of signing Aleksandar Mitrovic from Fulham this summer, sources have told Football FanCast.

Manuel Pellegrini is keen to revamp his striking options this summer as the Hammers prepare for something of a squad overhaul.

And the Serbia international has emerged as a major target, with the summer transfer window due to open later this week.

Fulham endured a difficult season in the Premier League and were relegated to the Championship in April.

The 24-year-old, though, scored 11 goals in the top-flight and has experience in the league, having previously played for Newcastle United.

The Hammers, who last summer signed Lukasz Fabianski from Swansea City after their relegation, are now attempting to find out if Mitrovic’s contract, which runs until 2023, contains a release clause.

Of course, if it does, the Hammers would be able to trigger it and enter into negotiations with the striker, who appeared for Serbia at last summer’s World Cup.

West Ham also remain interested in Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez, who first emerged as a target when Marko Arnautovic appeared set to leave for China in January.

He has scored 13 goals this term and his contract does contain a release clause, of £45million, though that drops to £22.5m if Celta are relegated. With one game of the Liga season to go, they are three points clear of the drop zone with a far superior goal difference to 18th-placed Girona.

It remains to be seen if the club would countenance the prospect of making Gomez their record signing this summer if, as appears likely, the Spanish side retain their top-flight status.

Elsewhere, sources have confirmed that Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll remain likely to leave the club this summer, while Javier Hernandez will also be allowed to depart if an acceptable bid is tabled.

The Mexico international scored seven goals in the Premier League in 2018-19 but completed the full 90 minutes just once. He was on the bench for the final three games of the campaign, against Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Watford; West Ham won every game.

He is valued at £10m and it is unclear if any interested parties have registered an interest in signing him.

West Ham set to trigger PL star’s release clause amid rival interest

[ad_pod ]

West Ham are set to trigger Salomon Rondon’s £16.5million release clause as they attempt to sign the West Bromwich Albion striker, per the Northern Echo.

What’s the word?

The 29-year-old scored 11 Premier League goals during a loan spell with Newcastle United in 2018-19 and is now a man in demand.

The aforementioned report claims that the Magpies would like to sign him permanently, but that the Hammers are hoping to steal a march on their domestic rivals.

Indeed, the Northern Echo state that there remains uncertainty over the future of manager Rafael Benitez and that there will be no transfer activity until that is resolved.

Rondon’s clause is active after West Brom failed to win promotion to the Premier League.

And Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is keen to sign an experienced striker this summer as he looks to build on his club’s 1oth-placed finish in 2018-19.

The first of many

West Ham need more than just one striker this summer.

Football FanCast understands that Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic is also a target, with the Hammers trying to ascertain whether or not his contract contains a release clause that has been activated by the Cottagers’ relegation to the Championship.

And FFC has also reported that Javier Hernandez, Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez are all likely to depart the club this summer.

Only bringing in Rondon, then, would leave the Hammers with just the Venezuela international and Marko Arnautovic, whose future is far from certain, given the £45m release clause in his contract.

This deal, if completed, then, cannot be the last for Pellegrini’s men, as they look to push on and attempt to qualify for Europe next season.
