The Verdict: Should Crystal Palace sell Alexander Sorloth this summer?

[ad_pod ]

A report by The Times (subscription required) suggests that Crystal Palace could lose both Christian Benteke and Alexander Sorloth this summer, with the former subject to a £15m from Chinese outfit Shandong Luneng Taisan and the latter having failed to impress since signing in January 2018.

Unlike Benteke, Sorloth has had few opportunities to impress in the starting XI and has notched just once in 20 appearances – an output that has left the Palace bigwigs underwhelmed with and willing to sell on the £9m striker.

The 23-year-old was surely brought in to be deputy to the aforementioned Benteke but, instead, Michy Batshuayi was signed a year later to replace the big Belgian, leaving Sorloth to stagnate in the reserves until an opportunity abroad presented itself.

Belgian outfit Gent offered the former Midtjylland hitman the chance to jumpstart his career again but he failed to take it, netting five times in 22 appearances. It looks as though Sorloth’s career at Palace is hanging in the balance, but what do Football FanCast’s writers think of the situation? Are the Eagles casting their judgement too soon? Read on for their verdicts…

Ben Goodwin

“If Christian Benteke is indeed on his way out, then Palace should give Sorloth another season. He has been woeful since moving to Selhurst Park, there’s no doubt about that, but some players take a couple of years to adjust to English football, and he is still only 23. Providing the Eagles bring in a quality centre forward, like Michy Batshuayi, who can take the brunt of the goalscoring pressure, Sorloth could still be useful as a target man off the bench. He also has a contract at the club until 2022, so it would not be a horrific financial decision to wait one more term before making a decision.”

Harry Sherlock

“It just hasn’t worked, has it? Sorloth has scored just once for the club in a total of 20 appearances and it feels as though he isn’t cut out for life in the Premier League. A loan spell at Gent hasn’t really turned up too many goals, either, and it feels as though he needs a move away to get his career back on track. A £9million fee looks foolish in retrospect but it was always a punt; Palace are unlikely to get their money back but this is the time for the club to let him loose.”

A Crystal Palace fan shares his most gutting moment of the last 10 years supporting the Eagles in the video below…

James Beavis

“Yes they should. From what we’ve seen it seems clear that Sorloth isn’t suited to the Premier League, and in that respect what is the point of keeping him in the hope he will come good? Palace’s gamble didn’t pay off and now they must admit defeat this summer, sell the Norwegian and then bring in a quality replacement who suits their style of play. What is for sure is that Zaha and Townsend won’t miss him having played with the far superior Batshuayi in recent months.”

Snap their hand off! West Brom fans urge club to cash in on Dawson

[ad_pod ]

Loads of West Brom fans have been reacting to some transfer news, as Burnley are reportedly interested in Craig Dawson.

According to The Sun, Burnley are ready to make a whopping £15m bid for Dawson.

The Clarets made a combined bid of £25m for both Dawson and Jay Rodriguez last summer, but both players remained at the Hawthorns.

And while Rodriguez proved exactly why the Baggies kept him on board with a fantastic season in the Championship, Dawson was less convincing.

The 29 year-old did start 42 league games, but tends to split opinion amongst the fans.

Now, with Burnley seemingly ready to flash their Premier League riches once more, the Hawthorns faithful are urging the club to cash in on Dawson.

Mason Holgate and Tosin Adarabioyo both being at the club only on loan means selling Dawson would leave any potential new manager with a massive job to overhaul the defence, but nonetheless that is what the Twitter reactions down below are crying out for…

Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t need to win Champions League to become a Spurs legend

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur face Liverpool in the Champions League final tonight.

After almost exactly five years at the club, Mauricio Pochettino will lead his side out into the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid as Spurs bid to win the competition for the first time in the history.

Should they win in Spain, they will win their first piece of silverware under the Argentine; they have not won a trophy since 2008, when Jonathan Woodgate’s face gave the club victory over Chelsea in the League Cup final.

It would, of course, be the icing on the cake. Pochettino has worked miracles in north London to the extent where there is a chant in his honour. Fans truly believe that he is magic.

And yet, such has been the scope of his achievements in north London, Pochettino doesn’t really need to win.

He has built the club in his own image and he has completely changed the perception of what Tottenham Hotspur stands for. An oft-repeated quote, originally from Roy Keane, claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson once gave a three-word team talk ahead of a meeting with Spurs: “Lads, it’s Tottenham”.

It was harsh then but it had a ring of truth. This was a Spurs side who had once gone 3-0 up against United and still conspired to lose 5-3. There have been so many notable examples of collapses – Andre Villas-Boas claiming Arsenal were in a “negative spiral” after a north London derby, only to see his side capitulate and finish behind the Gunners, Lasagna-gate, the “1-1 at Newcastle”, the list goes on and on and on.

But now, under Pochettino, this Tottenham side, the one featuring the world’s best striker and an attacking midfielder coveted by the very best clubs on the planet, is a completely different beast.

They finished fourth in the Premier League this season despite it perhaps being one of their worst seasons under the Argentine’s guidance in the top-flight and have reached the Champions League final. That bears repeating. After playing the likes of Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Premier League champions Manchester City and Ajax, Spurs have reached the Champions League final.

Pochettino cried after the semi-final, scarcely believing the scale of his squad’s achievement. If they win, it will perhaps be the greatest underdog story in the history of the competition. After all, they have not spent a penny since January 2018, when semi-final hat-trick hero Lucas Moura waltzed through the doors at Hotspur Way.

They have had to cope with their displacement from White Hart Lane, spending two years at the soulless corporate bowl that is Wembley and still finishing in the Champions League qualification places, while also thumping Real Madrid 3-1 on a famed glory, glory night.

It is perhaps the inverse of ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. This was a manager who was often called on to resign by frustrated fans, who wanted to see the club rise from finishing fourth to challenging for the Premier League. Pochettino has overseen such a transformation but they differ in the sense that Wenger kept winning things. He took the club to three FA Cup titles in four seasons prior to his departure, yet supporters celebrated his departure.

Pochettino doesn’t need the baubles or the honours. He has said himself that he feels trophies only serve to inflate one’s ego. Admittedly, that quote came after a particularly ignominious defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup but, still, the point stands.

Would Spurs fans, after all that Pochettino has achieved, trade it in for a single trophy?

Of course they wouldn’t.

He has emphasised the collective throughout his time at Spurs, helping stars blossom and giving the club a genuine identity.

They are now a team to be feared, a powerhouse both at home and abroad and they could well become European champions today.

Pochettino would deserve it, it would be the cherry on top of the cake following his incredible progress and the change he has overseen.

But, at the same time, he doesn’t need it; his legacy at Tottenham is secure. He is, without any shadow of a doubt, the best manager the club has had since the days of Bill Nicholson.

Validation through silverware is not necessary to substantiate his legacy.

Nottingham Forest: Joao Carvalho’s decision will make or break play-off hopes

Clearly, it’s a big season for Nottingham Forest in 2019/20 as the legendary Martin O’Neill looks to take a side he won so much with as a player up the Championship table and potentially into a play-off spot at the very least. To that end, all this means they can’t afford to lose linked-away Joao Carvalho this summer.

Indeed, the Portuguese attacking midfielder had an impressive 2018-19 campaign, scoring four and assisting eight in his 38 league appearances. His 1.2 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game could suggest he’s improve massively with better players in front of him, with the 22-year-old clearly possessing an attacking talent.

No one’s doubting the fact that he does need to improve his end product to really make the most of his ability to pick a key pass or dribble at defenders, but producing four goals and eight assists in a side who struggled for consistency for much of the campaign does hint at an exciting kind of talent.

However Greek outlet DNA Sports, via Nottinghamshire Live, have reported Olympiacos have the player marked as a ‘favourite’ of their’s and they want him to join them this summer. To put it simply, that’d be a huge blow for Martin O’Neill ahead of such a big season.

The assist tally isn’t too bad, but if he had a stand-out striker in front of him to get on the end of his key passes, there’s every chance we’ll see that number rise. Currently, he’s rated at £9m on Transfermarkt, but he’d potentially be worth a whole lot more after another season at Forest, especially if there’s some kind of resurgence from the Reds.

Without him at the City Ground next campaign, they’d have to buy a replacement and hope he blossoms into the player that Joao Carvalho is becoming. That’s a huge risk and certainly a massive loss after having the ideal man in their lap. Yes, keeping him long-term might be a pipe dream but this just seems like a summer too early.

Make him the focal point of O’Neill’s side, see how he gets on, and perhaps look to sell if that elusive promotion continues to evade the club.

Forest just can’t afford to lose one of their most promising talents this summer.

Forest fans, who do you think the club should sign if Joao Carvalho leaves this summer? Join the discussion by commenting below.

Liverpool Transfer Roundup: New Ojo deal, loan for youngster, no move for Max Kruse

[ad_pod ]

With Liverpool in a great position following a successful past season, there is no need for a host of incomings this summer. Most of the business at Anfield is expected to be in regards to players already on Merseyside, whether it be contract negotiations or transfer departures. Here’s a look at the latest news regarding the Reds…

Ojo earns new deal

One of those players who will be offered a new deal is Sheyi Ojo, according to Football Insider. Ojo spent last year on loan at French side Reims and, despite only scoring one goal in 19 games from the wing, Liverpool have decided to offer him a five-year extension to his current deal.

Another loan move for Kane

According to Goal.com, youngster Herbie Kane will spend another season out on loan next year. The 20-year-old midfielder impressed at Doncaster Rovers in League One, and now Brentford, Millwall and Hibernian are all interested in securing his services on a short-term basis.

Origi and Brewster instead of Kruse

Despite previous interest, the Reds are no longer in the hunt for Werder Bremen midfielder Max Kruse according to the Liverpool Echo. The former German international scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions for the Bundesliga side last season, but Jurgen Klopp has instead decided to place his trust in Champions League hero Divock Origi and youth academy graduate Rhian Brewster.
