According to The Chronicle in Zimbabwe, Aston Villa are ready to splash £20m in order to bring midfielder Marvelous Nakamba to the club this summer.

What’s the word?

Aston Villa have already wrapped up four signings since the window opened, adding bodies to their ranks in both attacking and defensive phases of play. However, it now appears as though they’re targeting the midfield area.

The Villans are certainly not going about their business quietly and after signing Brazilian striker Wesley from Club Brugge for £22.25m, they could be set to raid the Belgian side again.

The Chronicle suggests that Dean Smith’s men have Nakamba in their sights and are ready to spend £20m on the midfielder.

Newcastle are also interested in the 25-year-old per the report.

Much needed steel

Nakamba is a highly rated footballer according to The Chronicle and it’s easy to see why after the player shone for his club side in the Champions League last term.

The Zimbabwean was exceptional as he played in all but one of their group games alongside recent addition Wesley. It was an impressive campaign for Club Brugge as they defeated Monaco and also drew with Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

It’s difficult to assess just how well a player will settle from Belgium but there is a case to be made that he’ll be able to cut it after a similar player in Wilfred Ndidi made the switch from Genk to the Premier League in 2017.

Both of them are tough tackling midfielders and as a result, Nakamba could give something to the Villa midfield that’s sorely missing.

In the Champions League last season the Zimbabwe international made 4.4 tackles per game. Ndidi, on the other hand, made 3.8 in the Premier League which proves just how alike they are.

However, if you compare that to the current set of players at Villa, Nakamba is streets ahead.

John McGinn made the highest number of tackles per game for the Villans but that only amounts to 2.1 on average.

As a result, it’s easy to see where the Club Brugge man could benefit Smith if he signs ahead of the new season.

Villa lack a tough tackling midfielder but Nakamba could help put that behind them.

Neil Lennon’s comments sourced by the Scottish Sun towards the end of May did hint at a potentially busy summer for the club in terms of transfers, but that doesn’t mean they should be looking at players for the sake of it. 

“Recruitment will be important, we want to freshen things up a little bit,” he said. So, it could be a fairly eventful summer for the Scottish champions as they look to extend their domestic dominance and chase that glorious ten-in-a-row.

Indeed, it’s fair to say the Celtic gaffer probably needs more attacking players with Timothy Weah and Oliver Burke having departed after their loan deals. Elsewhere, in midfield, Olivier Ntcham has been linked with a move away while Tom Rogic suffered his fair share of injuries last season.

Still, one of the names linked with a move to Glasgow shouldn’t exactly excite fans. That’s because, according to Football Ghana, the Hoops are apparently interested in signing Deportivo Alaves’ Patrick Twumasi, a transfer which, in our minds, makes very little sense.

The Express reported in May that the SPFL champions might make up to seven signings in the summer but the 25-year-old’s potential purchase would, frankly, be rather perplexing. Having been unable to score a single goal and only making 11 substitute appearances in La Liga (stats Transfermarkt), it’s hard to argue that he’d be an upgrade on James Forrest or even a marked improvement on younger players such as Ryan Christie or Mikey Johnston.

Considering that Twumasi averaged 0.3 shots, 0.2 key passes (stats via WhoScored) per 90 minutes indicates his real lack of impact from the bench. Moreover, 0.9 unsuccessful touches per game doesn’t exactly scream the stat of a player who can come in and lift the club’s attack.

Just because he blew them away in a UEFA Champions League qualifier in 2017 doesn’t guarantee he’ll come good over the course of a season. Avoid.

Arsenal may be forced to sell Henrikh Mkhitaryan to raise funds needed to sign the players necessary to challenge again, as per The Times.

It’s no secret that Arsenal (understood to have a transfer budget of just £45m) will struggle to match the spending power of their top six rivals. Manchester United reportedly (per Raphael Honingstein on ESPN via the Express) have £200-£250m to spend, while Manchester City and Liverpool, both of whom broken their transfer records last season, aren’t exactly sort of cash.

Unai Emery on the other hand has an estimated £45million at his disposal – which is £11million less than what it cost to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last January. That’s £45million to take his current squad – who finished fifth in the Premier League conceding 51 in the process and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round and the League Cup in the quarterfinals – past the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Yikes.

It is expected that in order to raise funds to sign the necessary talent, the Gunners will sacrifice a number of players they deem surplus to requirements. And one name in particular who has been highlighted is Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The 30-year-old arrived last January from United as part of a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez go the other way. The Armenia international, who recently missed the Europa League final due to ongoing political tensions, reportedly (also via the Express) earns around £200,000 per week at Arsenal – the same as his former Borussia Dortmund teammate and Golden Boot winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, while Arsenal’s top scorer weighed in at 31 goals and eight assists last term, thus proving his worth, Mkhitaryan scored just six times and fell desperately short in the creative department too, providing just seven; an output that will surely have the club questioning how necessary he is to their future plans.

Slated by Ian Wright on Sky Sports (via HITC) towards the end of the season, who described his move to North London as a ‘nightmare’, they should take any potential money and run.

According to Turkish outlet Sabah, Slaven Bilic is trying to lure Shinji Kagawa to West Brom.

What’s the word?

West Brom may well be busy in the transfer window this summer as they try to replace the loans they brought in over the course of 2018/19.

Salomon Rondon looks as though he’ll depart the club whilst they’ll also have to bring in a replacement for Dwight Gayle.

There are a number of areas that Bilic will need to improve ahead of a summer rebuild and the attacking midfield role is clearly an area they’re targeting.

West Brom are still long-term admirers of Bradley Dack but now the 97-cap Kagawa is attracting their attention.

Sabah claim that Albion’s new boss is trying to convince him to make the switch from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

An instant hit

It’s safe to say that if Bilic can bring a player with the calibre that Kagawa possesses to Albion, he’ll be considered an instant hit.

This is a player who has achieved some remarkable things in his career and if they convince him to drop down to the Championship after a loan spell with Besiktas, it would be an incredible piece of business.

Why? Because the Japanese star is a winner. He won the Premier League title with Manchester United in 2013 and he’s also a two-time Bundesliga champion with Dortmund.

Although failing to set the world alight in England before, his performances in Germany speaks for itself and his success at the highest level cannot be underestimated.

For Dortmund, the 30-year-old has 60 goals and 55 assists in 216 matches.

Considering his creative nous, it would be an incredible coup if Bilic can lure him to the Baggies and he’d almost certainly end West Brom’s troubles when it comes to creativity.

His quality at Championship level would be supreme judging by what he’s accomplished previously in his career and he’d certainly boost their chances of promotion.

On that final factor alone, it could instantly put their new manager in the good books of the Hawthorns faithful.
