Jan Vertonghen was one of Tottenham’s best players last season, if not the best.

The Belgium international was simply heroic as Spurs reached the Champions League final and finished in the top four – his form was good enough to prompt our very own Harry Sherlock to dub him the club’s signing of the decade.

Vertonghen is a key cog in Mauricio Pochettino’s team, but for reasons yet to be officially confirmed, the Argentine left the defender out of his squad entirely for the Premier League opener against Aston Villa.

Spurs still went on to get the win – albeit whilst making hard work of it – and when asked about the situation, Pochettino said: “I am going to play the players who I believe deserve to play.”

As aforesaid, Spurs still got the win but not without trailing 1-0 for 73 minutes after John McGinn capitalised on some poor defending.

Pochettino and Vertonghen have to put their differences aside for one reason – there is simply too much competition at the top of the Premier League to be leaving your best players out.

Last season, Spurs finished in the top four by just a single point, and missed out on third place also by a single point having had a superior goal difference to Chelsea – the margins are so fine that there isn’t any time to weaken yourself by not playing a star performer.

Who knows, if the former Ajax man had been playing against Villa then Dean Smith’s side might not have even scored their goal – what if Spurs fail to make the top four by a single goal come May?

Entirely hypothetical, sure, but when the top two dropped just 16 and 17 points each last season, there really is no room for mistakes.

The fact of the matter is that even at this early stage of the season, the points that are won and lost are the same points that are up for grabs in the business end of the season.

Spurs cannot allow themselves to potentially miss out on even just a single point by leaving their best defender on the bench.

Pochettino and Vertonghen must make amends soon.

كشفت تقارير صحفية ألمانية، أن نجم بايرن ميونخ ديفيد ألابا ينوي الكشف عن قراره النهائي بشأن مستقبله، اليوم الثلاثاء.

ومن المقرر أن ينتهي العقد الحالي للظهير النمساوي مع بطل الدوري الألماني في الصيف المقبل.

ورغبت إدارة البافاري في إقناع ألابا بخطوة التوقيع على عقد جديد، ولكنها فشلت في التوصل إلى أي اتفاق معه.

وحسب صحيفة “بيلد” الألمانية، فإن ديفيد ألابا ينوي الكشف عن قراره المصيري بشأن مستقبله اليوم.

وأوضحت أن ألابا سيعلن أنه ينوي الرحيل مجانًا عن بايرن ميونخ نهاية الموسم الحالي، بمجرد انتهاء عقده.

وأشارت إلى أن ألابا يستقطب اهتمام العديد من الأندية الأوروبية، مثل ريال مدريد وليفربول ومانشستر سيتي وتشيلسي وغيرهم.

وأفادت أن ريال مدريد يُعد الوجهة المنشودة لـ ألابا، رغم اهتمام كبار أندية إنجلترا بضمه.

علّق خالد عيد المدير الفني لغزل المحلة على تحسن نتائج الفريق في الفترة الأخيرة وتقدمه في جدول ترتيب الدوري المصري.

وقال خالد عيد في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر قناة “أون تايم سبورتس”: “تحقيق الفوز أمام الزمالك أعطى غزل المحلة دفعة قوية في منافسات الدوري المصري والأداء بدأ يتحسن في الآونة الأخيرة”.

وتابع: “انطلاقتنا في بداية الموسم كانت جيدة ولكننا كنا نعاني من كثرة الإصابات، ولكن بدأنا الاعتماد على عدد من اللاعبين الجدد منهم مدافع شاب مميز من قطاع الناشئين”.

واختتم: “نرغب هذا الموسم في البقاء بالدوري، واللاعبون الحاليون في غزل المحلة قادرون على ذلك، وتحقيق مراكز متقدمة في الموسم المقبل”.

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have had the same cunning plan after a report in The Sun said that Chelsea are ready to bid £80m for want-away attacker Wilfried Zaha in January should they manage to overturn their transfer ban.

The Sun say that the Ivory Coast international reluctantly remained at Selhurst Park on deadline day having previously handed in a transfer request, but only until the next transfer window at the beginning of 2020.

The report adds that the Eagles’ London neighbours are confident they can escape their ban and be able to bring new players to Stamford Bridge in the New Year, and that they would be keen on a big-money move for the 26-year-old.

Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson’s men saw striker Michy Batshuayi link back up with the Blues at the end of the 2018/19 campaign following a successful loan spell with them in which he scored six goals in 13 appearances.

Given Palace failed to bring in a new striker before the deadline despite sending Alexander Sorloth out on a two-year loan, their supporters have spotted an opportunity to bring the Belgian back after The Sun report about Chelsea’s interest in their talisman.

Many Watford fans have given their response on Twitter to one of the club’s tweets which shows new signing Ismaila Sarr at training on his first day.

The club posted a video of Sarr walking through the training ground, carrying his boots in a plastic bag.

Sarr, 21, joined the club for a reported fee of over £25m, blowing their previous record fee of £18.5m for Andre Gray out of the water.

The Senegalese winger has penned a five-year deal at Vicarage Road after impressing for Rennes, scoring 13 times in 50 games for them last year.

Yesterday was Sarr’s first day training for the Hornets, and the club updated their fans, letting them know how much he impressed the medical staff.

Head of injury prevention and rehabilitation, Alberto Leon, said: “It was the first day with the player and the first approach is a positive one.

“He came in a good condition and we did all the tests to see more deeply how he is.”

“With all this information we have created a profile of the player and we can see if there is an imbalance or a weakness point.

“We are still collating the results but all the staff say he is in a normal shape and this is not a player we are going to have to work a lot on different things. He came with a good baseline, he looks good and we are really happy with the player. He looks a good athlete.”

Watford fans couldn’t help but poke fun at themselves, though, considering the video posted by the club has Sarr looking rather grumpy. Others also laughed about how Sarr was carrying a plastic bag with his boots in, rather than a boot bag.

West Brom remain unbeaten this Championship campaign after two victories and a trio of 1-1 draws – the latest against Derby County on Saturday.

Baggies boss Slaven Bilic needed a penalty from Kenneth Zohore for the second time in the space of a week to rescue a point after Martyn Waghorn had opened the scoring with a spot-kick of his own at Pride Park.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was also a hero, managing to stop the Rams doubling their lead by saving a second Waghorn penalty.

Just 20 minutes into the match, Kieran Gibbs was forced off through injury having been the man to gift Derby a sixth-minute lead.

It appears as if the 5 foot 11 left-back is facing a recurring problem and could be doubtful going into this weekend.

On Gibbs’ injury, Bilic said:

“It isn’t bad but it’s his problem, that little groin issue. It looks like it’s not a long, long one, but we are not sure about Blackburn.”

The Croatian also suggested that Conor Townsend is a more than suitable back up as he has always performed when required.

But that isn’t the case, which could leave West Brom in a worrying predicament in the short-term.

The 26-year-old isn’t the greatest option as he was dribbled past 0.7 times last season, which was more than Gibbs at 0.5.

He was also dispossessed 0.9 times per game whilst Gibbs is averaging just 0.4 per match this current season.

In terms of passing he was still worse, averaging just 33.2 passes per game and a success rate of 74.6%. In comparison, the 29-year-old managed 47.8 passes per match and a success rate of 87.4% in his five Championship games so far this season.

Townsend was playing non-league football as recently as 2016, and with his 12 appearances in the Championship last term being the highest level he’s ever played, there are plenty of question marks over his ability based on the aforementioned stats.

After all, when Gibbs sat out a period last term, Townsend didn’t always convince. Against Bristol City back in April, he allowed Jack Hunt to sneak in behind him and score as he finished on a rating of 6.2, per WhoScored.

If required this time, he’ll need to be better.

أعلن نادي ريال مدريد الإسباني في بيان رسمي عبر موقعه الإلكتروني، إصابة عضلية لـ لاعبه الدومينيكاني، ماريانو دياز.

وأكد النادي أن ماريانو أجرى فحوصات في المدينة الطبية لـ ريال مدريد اليوم الخميس، وتبين أنه يعاني من إصابة عضلية في القدم اليسرى.

ماريانو دياز شارك مع ريال مدريد أساسيًا في مباراة ريال سوسيداد الأخيرة، والتي انتهت بالتعادل الإيجابي 1/1.
