Palmer: Roy Hodgson West Brom return would be a surprise

Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that he would be very surprised if Roy Hodgson returned to the Hawthorns.

Hodgson is out of work following his departure from Crystal Palace and is being linked with the West Brom job.

According to Football Insider, the Midlands club have actually made an approach for the 73-year-old, but that has been knocked back.

All in all, it is simply something Palmer cannot see happening, though the ex-West Brom player expects Hodgson to return to football in the near future.

“I don’t think Roy Hodgson is finished with football yet. I don’t think he’s finished with football,” Palmer said.

“But I’d be very surprised if he took on the job of West Brom right now knowing what job that entails at this moment in time.”

The Baggies’ search for a new manager is really starting to drag on, with David Wagner now out of the running having looked set for the Hawthorns dug out.

This comes after a deal to bring former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder also collapsed.

It remains to be seen where West Brom turn to now but, like Wagner and Wilder, Hodgson also seems to be out of the equation.

Everton fans on West Ham handball

Many Everton fans have been left to fume as some footage emerges of an incident that happened in their 1-0 win at West Ham United in the Premier League.

As shared by Twitter page @EvertonNewsFeed, a header from Josh King appeared to be blocked on the line by the hand of Craig Dawson, which was subsequently not picked up by the referee or VAR officials on the day.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference before their match away at Aston Villa, Carlo Ancelotti said (via @EvertonNewsFeed): “He scored a goal, and I’m surprised nobody knew this. I didn’t see this. I don’t think VAR was in the stadium. Imagine if West Ham scored a goal, it was a huge mistake, it cannot happen with VAR!”

Luckily for the Goodison Park faithful, it did not cost them any points in the end, but given that goal difference could well turn out to be a factor in their hunt for European qualification, Dawson would have been sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity while they would have also been able to increase their goal tally from the penalty spot and potentially score more as the game went on.Everton fans on West Ham footageThese Toffees fumed as the footage was shared on Twitter, with one Blues supporter even going as far as to claim that it was ‘astonishing’:

Wolves eye Paulo Fonseca as Nuno successor

Nuno Espirito Santo’s stay at Wolves is now done. He is out the door and barring a remarkable set of circumstances, will never return to Compton again.

His farewell on Sunday afternoon was an emotional one as he waved goodbye to the first set of supporters he’d seen inside Molineux for over a year.

His team didn’t earn all three points but it was a magnificent sight to see the stadium rocking in such a manner.

Wolves earned a boost from fans being back inside the stadium but it wasn’t enough to propel them to victory over Manchester United.

Despite Nuno’s exit, it was a timely reminder of how much is needed to be done this summer by Jeff Shi and co. After all, this has been a torrid season by their very high standards.

It feels like Nuno’s departure comes with the team at a crossroads. Since the Old Gold were promoted, this is undoubtedly their worst season.

They finished in the bottom half of the table and are now in need of a manager who can take them to the next level.

Bruno Lage is one of the names Wolves have been keeping an eye on but they’re also interested in Paulo Fonseca according to The Mirror.

The 48-year-old took Roma to the Europa League semi-finals this season but will leave his job in Italy this summer with Jose Mourinho set to replace him.

Fonseca amassed a win success rate of just under 52% but they failed to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League this term.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-rumours-and-news-soumare-dias-dembele-marques-nuno-santo” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer rumours and news!”]

It was a difficult campaign for the Portuguese but he could help to revive Wolves.

The Jorge Mendes client is known for playing a high intense brand of football, one that focuses on the attacking element of football.

Nuno was striving to turn Wolves into a more attacking outfit this term but failed to ever transition the side from a three-man defence into a four-man backline.

Speaking at the start of the season, he said: “We have to grow in some aspects of our game. I would like to be more dominant, and I would like to have more of the ball.

“I would like to improve our tally of goals scored, and decrease the goals (against).”

Unfortunately, it never really came off. Wolves kept just two clean sheets in 14 league matches from October to January as the four-man backline ended up costing the Old Gold.

Fonseca, however, could finally help the Molineux outfit to dominate more.

At Roma, his side scored 1.9 goals per game which is considerably more than Nuno managed with Wolves; 1.3 per match.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk manager relentlessly talks about the need to be “brave”, something he installed in his players during his spell in Italy.

“I have my ideas and I want to implement them, but the main thing is to build a brave team. That’s the main objective and I believe with these players, we can build a brave team without any problems against the biggest teams, the small teams,” he once commented.

Fonseca’s philosophy revolves around neat and tidy play at high speed, a style that of football that wowed Pep Guardiola.

After Manchester City faced Donetsk in Europe, the Spaniard remarked: “Before every game against Shakhtar, I have the same feeling.

“The first time we face them in the group stage, my [scouting] team went to see them and they came back saying, ‘Wow.’ They were really impressed. In Barcelona all the time it was, ‘Shakhtar, Ukraine, who cares which players play, nobody knows them.’”

If he can leave someone like Guardiola in awe, there’s no reason why Fosun shouldn’t consider him.

Moyes drops enticing West Ham injury update

Speaking to the press (via football.london), West Ham United manager David Moyes has dropped another enticing injury update after refusing to rule out Michail Antonio for tonight’s clash against Burnley, with the Scotsman saying that Declan Rice is ‘ahead of schedule’.

Rice has been out of action since before the international break after sustaining a knee injury, with West Ham since sweating to get him back to play a part in the end-of-season run.

David Moyes drops enticing injury update

Moyes has been forced to cope without the Englishman’s influence in midfield, with fellow first team regulars Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell also sidelined.

However, in a stroke of positive news, the Irons boss has now confirmed that Rice is ‘ahead of schedule’ and slowly getting back to full fitness as he dropped an enticing injury update.

“He is back training a little bit we are not sure exactly what level he is at,” Moyes explained.

“We have a few days before the game on Monday but he is making good progress and we are happy with what he is doing and I would say he is ahead of schedule. We are trying to keep pushing him on.”

Transfer Tavern take

Even though it is unclear exactly when he’ll return, news that Rice is making good progress comes as an encouraging piece of information for West Ham fans, and the revelation that he is ‘ahead of schedule’ is even better.

He has been arguably the club’s most crucial player this season, supported by the fact he has averaged more interceptions in midfield than any other Irons player and their fourth-highest WhoScored average match rating throughout the campaign.

Indeed, having Rice back for the run-in to the season could come as a big boost for Moyes, and Hammers supporters will surely be hoping that he continues his quick recovery.

McAvennie says Heaton to Celtic unlikely

Frank McAvennie has exclusively told Football FanCast that Celtic’s transfer structure means that Tom Heaton is unlikely to sign for the Hoops this summer, after Paul Robinson told Football Insider that the Scottish giants should target him.

Heaton is out of contract at Aston Villa this June, with the Bhoys in need of a senior goalkeeper.

Celtic currently have three first-team shotstoppers, although neither Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain nor Conor Hazard have been able to nail down the number-one spot at Parkhead.

Greek international Barkas has made a number of high-profile errors, especially in European competition, whilst Bain has been the preferred choice in recent weeks – starting Celtic’s last 15 games in all competitions.

But Celtic have kept just 17 clean sheets in their 36 Scottish Premiership matches, and whilst McAvennie recognises their need for a new goalkeeper, he doesn’t believe it’ll be Heaton, who’s not played a single minute of senior football since suffering a serious knee problem on New Year’s Day 2020.

McAvennie, suggesting new chief executive Dominic McKay needs to make changes, told Football FanCast:

“Tommy Heaton is a good keeper, and Aston Villa is a big club so it wouldn’t faze him coming up to Celtic. I think he’s a good keeper, but I don’t know if it will work. They’ve got three keepers at the moment, and none of them are my number one – that says everything.

“Celtic’s biggest problem is they like to buy young and sell and it hasn’t worked well. Unless the new guy changes the way Celtic work.”

WHU: Fans react to Oxlade-Chamberlain link

Fans of West Ham United have taken to Twitter in reaction to reports of the Hammers’ interest in a summer move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

According to a report by Anfield Central, David Moyes’ side have approached Liverpool regarding a move for Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the Reds manager, Jurgen Klopp, said to be open to letting the midfielder leave Merseyside this summer, despite the 53-year-old’s preference that the midfielder remains at Anfield.

However, whether the England international will consider a move to the London Stadium is dependant on his desire for regular first-team football, as, at present, Klopp does not view the 27-year-old as a crucial part of the Liverpool starting XI, the report claims.

Although, after several West Ham news accounts relayed the report on Twitter, fans of the Hammers flocked to have their say on the matter, with many appearing to be firmly against the idea of their club making a move for Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

So, what exactly did these West Ham United fans have to say in reaction to the report regarding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?

“Another sick note, no thanks.”

Leicester again linked with Naby Keita

Naby Keita has again been linked with a summer move to Leicester City, with a host of other clubs also now interested in signing him.

The 26-year-old has been a disappointing signing for the Reds, having arrived with so much expected of him back in 2018, officially joining the year before.

While Keita has produced some good performances, and featured in some memorable Liverpool wins, it is still hard to deny that he has been underwhelming at Anfield.

Fresh report links Keita with Leicester move

The Guinean has recently been linked with a move away from the Reds, with Leicester emerging as a strong contenders to snap him up.

Now, Anfield Central claim that the Foxes are ‘excited by the thought’ of Keita moving to the King Power Stadium, such is his dynamic style of play.

Leicester aren’t alone in showing an interest, however, with Barcelona, Atalanta, Borussia Monchengladbach, Inter Milan, Sevilla and RB Leipzig all mentioned as potential suitors, too.

Transfer Tavern take

While Keita has been frustrating for Liverpool, especially in terms of injuries, it would be a risk to let him leave at this point in his career. This is a player that Virgil van Dijk has hailed as ‘incredible’ and ‘outstanding’, which speaks volumes.

At 26, his peak years could still be ahead of him and he has shown in the past that he can shine when his body allows him to, enjoying an 87.9 per cent pass completion rate in the Premier League this season – more than Jordan Henderson (87.3%) and James Milner (85.6%).

Keita still has two years remaining on his current deal, so if his struggles continue next season, a bigger decision could then be made about his future.

WBA: Fans react to report on Allardyce

Fans of West Bromwich Albion have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relayed a report regarding the future of the Baggies’ manager, Sam Allardyce.

According to the report by the Birmingham Mail, Allardyce and West Brom will be at something of a crossroads come the end of the season, when, barring a remarkable escape from the Premier League relegation zone, the Baggies will be planning for a season in the Championship.

It is said that the West Brom hierarchy will have to weigh up whether they feel that the 66-year-old, who only joined the club in December of last year, is the man they wish to lead the club in the second tier next season, while it is also stated that it remains unclear whether the former England manager will wish to stay at The Hawthorns upon relegation – with a summer break clause in Allardyce’s contract making his departure a viable option for either party.

However, after West Brom Live shared this report on Twitter, fans of the Baggies flocked to have their say on the matter, with many making it abundantly clear they want to see the back of Allardyce at the end of the season.

So, what exactly did these West Bromwich Albion fans have to say in reaction to the report regarding Sam Allardyce’s future?

“Hopefully go, but the whole club needs change from the owners down to a vast majority of the playing staff too.”

Everton fans on Godfrey and Davies news

Many Everton fans have been left to slam an update from Patrick Boyland on the fitness of both Ben Godfrey and Tom Davies.

As per a tweet from The Athletic journalist, both players failed late fitness tests which meant that they could not play for the England U21s in their crucial game against Croatia on Wednesday evening.

Aidy Boothroyd’s team managed to win the match 2-1 in the end without them, but the Young Lions still went crashing out at the group stages of the European Championships.

Nonetheless, the fitness of both Godfrey and Davies has now become a big concern for several members of the Goodison Park faithful, as they play Crystal Palace at home in the Premier League on Monday evening.

Everton: Fans fume at Gomes’ performance

Lots of Everton fans have been fuming at the performance of Andre Gomes in the club’s Premier League loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Gomes started in midfield on Monday, playing beside Allan in Everton’s 3-4-1-2 formation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison up front. The Portuguese midfielder didn’t impress, though, and pick up a lowly WhoScored match rating of 5.97.

The home side scored in the first half as the ball went into the back of the net via a Ben Godfrey deflection. Jorginho then converted a penalty in the second half to make it 2-0 for the Londoners (as per Whoscored).

As a result of the 2-0 defeat, Everton are now down to sixth in the Premier League, behind Chelsea and West Ham. They have a game in hand on Chelsea, but they are four points behind Thomas Tuchel’s men (BBC).

Gomes couldn’t play a single key pass in the game, as the former Valencia man completed only one dribble all evening. He was also dispossessed three times – the second-most in the Everton side (Whoscored).

These figures illustrate that it wasn’t a great night for the 27-year-old and it caught the attention of many Everton fans who were fuming at the midfielder for his “shocking” performance.
