"Outstanding" Tottenham player suffers injury in new setback for Ange

One “outstanding" Tottenham Hotspur player has appeared to suffer a new injury this weekend in another setback.

Tottenham injuries 2023/24

Spurs haven’t had the best of luck with injuries during Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, with a plethora of players missing large parts of the campaign.

The Australian has had to make do without star summer signings Micky van de Ven and James Maddison for a number of months, whereas Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon have also been out for long periods of time.

Postecoglou still has Spurs pushing for a top-four finish as the run-in approaches, though, however, Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves leaves them two points behind Aston Villa.

At the beginning of the year, Spurs had a total of 12 separate injuries throughout the season, totalling in 625 days lost. Now, it looks as if one of the unlucky players has suffered another setback.

New Ryan Sessegnon injury

Sessegnon was named in Tottenham’s U21 starting XI for the match against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, however, after bursting into the box, the wide man pulled up and required treatment.

Ryan Sessegnon.

He only managed to last 35 minutes before needing to be replaced, and as per The Spurs Web, the commentator described it as ‘heart-breaking news’.

The 23-year-old, who can play as a left-back, left-midfielder or left-winger, made the move to north London from Fulham back in 2019. During that time, though, he has struggled with injury, with the most Premier League appearances made in a season being just 17.

Sessegnon arrived as a player with so much potential, with pundit Noel Whelan hailing him as “outstanding” and a “£50m player in the making” back in 2020, a price tag he is yet to live up to in a Spurs shirt unfortunately.

“I saw a lot of him at Fulham and he was outstanding for them, probably the best player in the Championship a few years ago.

“He’s young and has time on his side. I expected him to make a quicker impact at Spurs, but you often get these teething troubles with young players, especially when they’re competing with top internationals. “Once he has a run of matches under his belt and gets his confidence, there’s no doubt he’s an outstanding player.

“I think he is a £50million player in the making, and Spurs and Mourinho will, too.”

The Englishman has just under 18 months remaining on his Spurs deal, and if he struggles to remain fit, then Tottenham officials may seriously look into allowing Sessegnon to depart this summer, looking to bring in some funds in the process.

Harry Kane at Inter Miami?! Bayern Munich star told a big pay day in MLS would be a 'good idea' by ex-Tottenham boss & is reassured the trophies WILL come

England striker without major silverwareTied to a long-term contract in GermanyMay spread his wings again before retiringGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

The England international had hoped that a 2023 transfer to Bayern Munich would bring his barren run on the silverware front to a close, but the German giants have just ended a rare trophyless campaign. Kane is, however, tied to a long-term contract at the Allianz Arena and is captain of a Three Lions squad that is strong enough to compete for continental and global honours.

AdvertisementWHAT REDKNAPP SAID

With that in mind, former Tottenham boss Redknapp has – while speaking in association with the free to play fantasy game at that will see him compete with supporters for bragging rights at Euro 2024 this summer – told GOAL of Kane’s silverware hunt: “It would be nice obviously for him to win a trophy. I’m sure he will eventually – whether it is with Bayern Munich or England. No-one has won a trophy with England since 1966, so that’s not an easy thing to do as an England player. Club-wise, he’s an amazing player. He is the best centre-forward in the world. He can do absolutely everything. He’s got a big opportunity this summer to win a trophy with England. We have got the best squad in the tournament and I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t go all the way and win it."

SorareTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Quizzed on whether the lack of major honours will be annoying Kane, Redknapp added: “No, it won’t. He won’t be thinking about it. Look at how many goals he has scored again at Munich this year – a crazy amount. He has done his job. There are players that win trophies that are bang average but happen to be in a good team. He’s a fantastic player. He will go down in history at Tottenham as the leading goalscorer of all-time. Nobody will probably beat that. He’s a special player. I don’t think it will be bothering him. I do think he’ll win trophies before he retires.”

Kane severed ties with Spurs as they were unable to deliver on his ambition, and Redknapp said when asked if the club’s all-time leading goalscorer could retrace steps to north London at some stage: “I doubt it. I doubt he will want to go back. It’s always a difficult one, going back. Bayern Munich have had a bad year, but it’s a massive club. Vincent Kompany going in there, I’m sure he can’t wait to work with Harry Kane. He can build a team around him next year. I would be surprised if he came back to Tottenham.”

Radrizzani hit the jackpot by selling Leeds man for £7.7m

The 49ers officially completed their takeover of Leeds United in July of this year as they bought out the remaining 56% of shares from Andrea Radrizzani, having previously owned 44%.

They are now in full control of the club and the Italian owns Sampdoria in his home country, after a six-year spell in England with the Yorkshire-based outfit.

Radrizzani had plenty of highs and lows throughout his time as owner of the Whites, from winning the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League, to being relegated from the top-flight at the end of last season.

One of his most impressive pieces of business, with the benefit of hindsight, was the sale of central midfielder Ronaldo Vieira back in the summer of 2018, as the once-promising youngster has failed to kick on his career.

Ronaldo Vieira's Leeds statistics

The former England U21 international came up through the youth ranks at Leeds and eventually worked his way into the first-team as a regular during the 2016/17 campaign.

Vieira made 34 Championship appearances under Garry Monk and started 24 games that season as he showcased his defensive quality with 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game for his side.

Former Leeds midfielder Ronaldo Vieira.

The promising talent, who former Whites development coach once lauded as "bombastic", followed that up with 28 outings and 23 league starts for Leeds during the following campaign, in which the central midfielder made 3.5 tackles and interceptions per match.

In the summer of 2018, Radrizzani opted to sell the English whiz to Italian side Sampdoria for an initial fee of £7.7m due to the financial situation at the club.

He revealed that it was a "sacrifice" that needed to be made to balance the books whilst also being able to invest more into the team, despite then-manager Marcelo Bielsa not being "happy" with the decision.

How much is Ronaldo Vieira worth now?

The decision from Radrizzani to cash in on Vieira has turned out to be a fantastic one as the Italian chief hit the jackpot with the midfielder, whose value has plummeted over the subsequent years.

He has made 90 first-team appearances for Sampdoria over the past five-and-a-half seasons but has spent two spells out on loan with Hellas Verona and Torino during that time.

Vieira never averaged a Sofascore rating higher than 6.73 across five Serie A seasons, which is a score that would place him 19th within the current Leeds squad.

The 25-year-old made 18 Serie A appearances for Torino and Sampdoria combined last term and was an unused substitute on ten occasions.

Ronaldo Vieira's statistics over the last 365 days.

His parent club were relegated from the top-flight and Vieira has managed 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game across 13 Serie B matches in the 2023/24 campaign.

These statistics show that the former Leeds prospect has endured a rough time since his exit from Elland Road in 2018, which is reflected in his market value.

At the time of writing (07/12/2023), the midfielder is valued at €1.5m (£1.28m) by Transfermarkt and that is a staggering 83% decline from the initial £7.7m the Whites raked in for his services.

This shows that Radrizzani, who has been at Sampdoria since the summer and now has Vieira at his club once again, hit the jackpot with the former England U21 international as he sold him before the young ace's value plummeted.

Leeds were able to secure a significant fee for his services and his form and plummeting value since his departure suggests that they cashed in on him at the perfect time.

Mowbray must now ruthlessly bench 5/10 Sunderland star

Sunderland will be eager to win away at Plymouth Argyle this Saturday in Championship action, a potentially pivotal three points for the Black Cats could be secured at the expense of Carlos Corberan's West Bromwich Albion if the Baggies slip up versus Ipswich Town in the evening.

West Brom are directly below Tony Mowbray's playoff chasers at the moment in seventh spot, only behind Sunderland on goal difference at this moment in time with the Black Cats' potency in front of goal giving them a slight edge in this early season butting of heads for the final playoff position.

6th – Sunderland: 26 points, GD: +10

7th – West Brom: 26 points, GD +9

8th – Hull City: 26 points, GD +3

Plymouth are an opponent Sunderland cannot take lightly this weekend, however, especially with the Pilgrims hosting the contest at Home Park – Steven Schumacher's men picking up four wins from eight home games in the Championship so far after lifting the League One title at the end of last campaign.

A selection conundrum that Mowbray will contend with prior to this game in Devon will be who starts in the centre-back positions, with young defender Jenson Seelt underwhelming in the 3-1 home win over Birmingham City despite the positive result.

Jenson Seelt's numbers vs Birmingham

The 20-year-old, who was a summer buy from PSV Eindhoven to add some more bodies defensively, has shown signs of nerves when fielded by Mowbray in the starting line-up this season.

This was particularly evident against Birmingham, but his poor showing didn't derail his side at all to the relief of the die-hard Stadium of Light faithful watching on.

Seelt was weak when it came to asserting himself up against the Blues attackers, only winning half of his overall duels, as per Sofascore.

Whereas, his defensive colleague Trai Hume won six of his nine ground duels on the day to make up for Seelt's below-par display.

It led to Roker Report journalist Andy Tomlinson giving Seelt a 5/10 rating in an article after the game, saying the pace of the game was 'too much' for the 20-year-old to cope with.

Bellingham rested in Sunderland's predicted lineup vs Plymouth

Jobe Bellingham could be rested for Sunderland’s next Championship match away in Devon against Plymouth Argyle.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 23, 2023

The former PSV youngster could well be dropped from Mowbray's first team for the trip down to Devon as a result, especially with the news that senior centre-back option Luke O'Nien will be back and ready for action after serving a suspension.

Luke O'Nien as Seelt's replacement

Predominantly playing as a defensive midfielder or central midfielder throughout his career, O'Nien has excelled under Mowbray this campaign featuring even further back in the heart of defence.

O'Nien's own hot-headedness can be his undoing – picking up his fifth yellow card of the season already against Swansea meant he was unavailable for the Birmingham win – but the commitment and determination shown by Sunderland's number 13 on a regular basis when picked is a trait the Black Cats masses can't help but love.

Winning four out of his five aerial duels in that Swansea 0-0 draw, O'Nien's ability on the ball – which has seen him play centrally under Mowbray – also shone even from the back.

Sunderland's captain was accurate with both of his crosses into the Swans area on the day, attempting to unlock a dogged defence all afternoon, even whilst carrying out his standard defensive duties.

For a tough test away at the Pilgrims, Mowbray could well opt to start the former Wycombe Wanderers man over his promising Dutch defender to give Seelt a breather and to ensure Sunderland are rock solid up against Schumacher's Argyle.

Reporter drops "big news" from Man Utd on man Ratcliffe is planning to sack

One reporter has provided a Manchester United update on the future of Erik ten Hag, claiming it is “big news” for supporters.

Ten Hag’s future at Man Utd

The Red Devils’ season went from bad to worse in the week with a dramatic Champions League defeat to FC Copenhagen in Denmark. It was a crucial game for both sides, and after conceding twice late on, United fell to a 4-3 loss to leave them bottom of Group A with two games to play.

There were two penalties, a red card for Marcus Rashford and plenty of VAR drama, with VAR possibly missing an offence in Copenhagen’s first goal, to which Ten Hag said:

“You can see that there’s a player in front of Onana in an offside position on Copenhagen first goal. Not only tonight. We have to deal with many decisions against us in other games.”

After the game, there have been claims Ten Hag could soon be facing the sack, although Paul Scholes wants his former side to stick with the Dutchman, saying:

“I still don't feel like there's that much pressure on Erik ten Hag. He had a good year and bought some time. He's had bad injuries but nine defeats in 17 is not good enough. I know United have sacked before, but I don't think they can afford to keep doing that, I think we've got to let this fella go with it."

Recent reports have even suggested that incoming investor, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is planning to sack Ten Hag and wants to replace him with Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi. However, while talking to GiveMeSport, reporter Dean Jones believes that Ten Hag isn’t facing the sack at Old Trafford and feels the manager isn’t feeling the pressure regarding his job security.

“I realise there is a section of football society that wants ten Hag to lose his job and that every time United lose a game there is this narrative around him being axed and then deciding who would be best to replace him, but United seem unwavering in their support of him right now and I have some big news for Man United fans – I don’t think he’s getting the sack. The truth is, he feels very comfortable in his role at the club. He feels a pressure to perform but I don’t think he feels a pressure to save his own job. Against Copenhagen his game plan was going fine, United were cruising, then Rashford gets his controversial red card and everything is blown apart. Is that really the manager’s fault?"

Ten Hag’s record at Man Utd

Despite a poor start to the season, already losing nine games in all competitions, Ten Hag’s overall record at Old Trafford is relatively solid. He became the joint quickest manager in the club’s history to reach 50 wins, equalling Ernest Mangnall’s record following a 1-0 win over Fulham last weekend.

In total, Ten Hag has taken charge of 79 games and is averaging exactly two points per game at this moment in time.

Therefore, it seems to make sense to give the manager more time to turn things around, especially after such a good first year in charge which saw the club win silverware and finish in the top four.

CSA courts government scrutiny over T20 league

The country’s sports minister is considering a request to issue a moratorium on the board, preventing it from making any further announcements about the tournament

Firdose Moonda20-Aug-2018

Cricket South Africa President Chris Nenzani speaks at the inaugural player draft of the T20 Global League•T20 Global League

Cricket South Africa has run into more trouble in their efforts to get a T20 league up and running. The country’s minster for sports, Tokozile Xasa, has been asked to consider issuing a moratorium on the board, preventing them from making any announcements regarding the tournament until they appear before the parliamentary committee for sports and recreation. This request, delivered by letter on Monday morning, was made by Darren Bergman, the deputy shadow minister of sports and recreation and has been seen by ESPNcricinfo. Bergman asserts that the damage CSA have already suffered and the risks of greater financial losses are sufficient for parliament to demand assurances from the board that they can get a T20 competition up and running without any further hiccups.”While I do not believe that politicians should interfere in the running of sports and that we are best placed to play a supportive role, I am concerned that Cricket SA has the potential to risk major reputational and financial loss both to the sports as well as to the players and sponsors. This could have a negative impact locally and internationally,” Bergman’s letter reads. His comments were in reference to the legal action CSA is facing over the postponed GLT20.At least four owners have threatened CSA with legal action and reserved their rights to a team in the new T20 competition, despite the board announcing a new equity deal with broadcaster SuperSport. That deal is now believed to have fallen through, with SuperSport reportedly happy to telecast matches but averse to holding a 49% stake in the tournament.CSA’s board met in the weekend, planning to make an announcement on the future of their 20-over competition in the next two weeks, but if Bergaman’s request is successful, they will need to appear before parliament first. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Bergman said forcing to CSA to delay any further announcement would be “responsible rather than reckless.”CSA were due to address the parliamentary committee on Tuesday but asked for an extension while it prepares for next month’s AGM. If a moratorium comes in place – and Bergman hopes to hear back in the next few days – CSA may hasten their appearance in parliament. Then they need to satisfy the committee that they can conduct the 20-over tournament smoothly, despite the legal battles looming, the lack of a sponsor and the uncertainty over SuperSport’s role. All of this points to a likelihood that this new T20 league might be postponed as well, with the current six-team franchise competition continuing as usual.
