Rangers plotting £300,000 move to sign Euro 2024 forward ahead of Celtic

Rangers and Philippe Clement are also thought to be plotting a cut-price move to sign a Euro 2024 forward ahead of rivals Celtic.

Rangers summer signings so far

The Gers and Ibrox officials have wasted no time in putting plans in place ahead of the summer transfer window officially opening on Friday. They have already secured deals for Jefte and Oscar Cortes and have recently announced the pre-contract signing of defender Clinton Nsiala from AC Milan.

Rangers aren’t planning on stopping there, though, and appear to be leading the race to sign 20-year-old forward Yusuf Kabadayi from Bayern Munich in a deal that could be worth between £1m-£1.5m.

Plans are also seemingly being prepared beyond the summer window, with those in Glasgow already looking at a cut-price move for an international forward.

Rangers plotting cut-price Tommy Conway move

Another player who has been linked with a move to Ibrox in 2024 is Bristol City’s Tommy Conway. There were rumours over a deal for the forward in January, however, he remained with the Robins and is currently preparing to represent Scotland at Euro 2024 after recently making his international debut.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

Now, according to reliable reporter Scott Burns of The Daily Record, Rangers and rivals Celtic will both make offers for Conway, if he decides to run down his Bristol City deal.

Should his contract situation remain the same, then Rangers could secure a pre-contract agreement in the New Year which could cost them just £300,000 in cross-border compensation.

Conway has already caught the eye of Scotland boss Steve Clarke, who recently praised the striker ahead of this summer’s European Championships.

“It’s as if he’s never been away. He was with us last summer so the lads know Tommy. Tommy’s been good around the group. I know Tommy quite well and I thought he was a good one to bring in, slightly different to the type of forward that we’ve got. Tommy will try and get off the back of defenders a little bit more so I’m interested to see how it how he fits in.”

The 21-year-old, an out-and-out centre-forward, has enjoyed a brilliant rise through the ranks at Bristol City, with his Transfermarkt valuation increasing from €100,000 to a career-high €4m in the space of two years. During that time, he has made 92 senior appearances for the Robins, scoring 25 times and registering six assists.

Therefore, a cut-price transfer for Conway, although it may not be for a further 12 months, could be a shrewd piece of business by Rangers and Clement, making this one to watch.

Deal could happen next month: Spurs eyeing move for Brennan Johnson 2.0

The summer transfer window is just around the corner, and it's set to be a busy one for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to build on Ange Postecoglou's positive first season.

Last year's window was dominated by the saga surrounding Harry Kane, and while that was far from pleasing for the Spurs faithful, they were able to get several talents through the door themselves.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

The likes of James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Brennan Johnson made a tangible impact on the team this season, and based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co could be about to repeat the trick that landed them the Welshman.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Nottingham Forest's Callum Hudson-Odoi and could make an offer 'before 30 June.'

The report claims that the Lilywhites view the former Chelsea ace as someone possessing "huge" amounts of potential and that, due to the Tricky Trees' perilous financial situation, someone who could be signed this summer for a relatively modest fee.

Reports from earlier this month have claimed that the Englishman could be sold for around £30m, and while that's certainly not cheap, it isn't unreasonable for a player who reached double figures for goal involvements in all competitions this season.

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

It might not be a deal that goes down well with the fans to begin with, but the last time Levy and Co signed a player from Forest, it turned out reasonably well.

Spurs could repeat their Johnson trick

The last player that the Lilywhites signed from Forest was Johnson, who joined the club last summer for a fee of around £47.5m, and while some cast doubt at the time, it would be fair to say the Welshman enjoyed a good first season in N17.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

In his 35 first-team appearances, the 23-year-old winger scored five goals and provided ten assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.3 games, which is pretty good going for a young player in a new team.

Moreover, as the Nottingham-born attacker only played 2504 minutes of action, he averaged a goal involvement every 166.9 minutes or every 1.85 90s.

In comparison, while Hudson-Odoi wasn't quite as productive, his return of eight goals and two assists in 34 games is still seriously impressive considering he's playing for a team that will generally be the underdog in most Premier League match-ups, and when broken down by minutes, the Englishman averaged a goal involvement every 218.9 minutes, or every 2.4 90s.

It's also worth remembering that this season was his first one without significant injuries disrupting his development, and lo and behold, he delivered, suggesting that the Lilywhites' assessment of his potential may well be accurate, provided he remains fit.

Lastly, while the "amazingly talented" Wandworth-born gem, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, hasn't had the best of times in recent years, he's still the player Bayern Munich were prepared to pay £70m to sign in 2020, so if Postecoglou can manage his injury problems properly, there is no reason why he couldn't coax him into the player so many used to think he'd become.

Ultimately, signing Hudson-Odoi is a gamble, but based on his performances this season, the reasonable fee and the sky-high potential so many used to believe he had, it's one worth taking, and the last player to make a move from the City Ground has worked out rather well.

Spurs keen on signing "special" £41m upgrade on Bentancur

The impressive talent could make the Lilywhites’ midfield far more dangerous next season.

Ian Bell to retire at end of 2020 season

The Warwickshire batsman last played international cricket in 2015

Matt Roller05-Sep-2020Ian Bell, the former England middle-order batsman, will retire from professional cricket at the end of this season.Bell, 38, last played for England in 2015, but has been a regular for Warwickshire since then. He missed the whole of the 2019 season with injury, and has struggled for runs this year with a top score of 28 in all formats.”It’s true when they say you know when the time’s right, and unfortunately, my time is now,” Bell said. “While my hunger and enthusiasm for the sport that I love remain as strong as ever, my body simply can’t keep up with the demands of the game to the standard of which I expect of myself.”

Bell’s retirement comes as something of a surprise, with his announcement only two months after he had signed a new deal for 2021. But in a statement, he said that he “couldn’t disrespect the club I love by being unable to play to the level they deserve”.”It’s been an absolute privilege and honour to fulfil my boyhood dream of playing for both England and Warwickshire,” Bell said. “As a child, to play just once for either would have been enough for me, but to do so for the past 22 years is more than I could have ever wished for.”To have spent my entire career and won trophies with my boyhood club is something both myself and my family are enormously proud of. To everyone associated with the club; the staff, players, fans and anyone I’ve worked with during this time: thank you.”Bell will play Warwickshire’s final Bob Willis Trophy fixture on Sunday, away at Glamorgan, before playing his final T20 game next week. He will be one of three Warwickshire stalwarts retiring this season, along with Tim Ambrose and Jeetan Patel, and the club’s sport director Paul Farbrace said they would need to “rebuild” as a result.Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott with the Division Two trophy•Getty Images”Ian will retire from the game as a true Bears legend,” Farbrace said. “He’s come through our development system and academy, won every trophy possible, and he has broken club batting records.”During his 12-year international career, he was also a fantastic ambassador for Warwickshire CCC who scored runs all over the world and was firmly established as one of the world’s best batsmen.”Knowing when to retire is an incredibly difficult decision for every professional sportsman and woman and Ian deserves a huge amount of credit for making this call whilst he still had another year remaining on his contract.”We will use this opportunity to rebuild by further developing our young, homegrown players whilst also attracting talented players with a hunger and determination to win.”Bell retires as a modern England great. He is one of only three men to have won the Ashes five times, and was an integral part of their middle order during their rise to No. 1 in the ICC’s Test rankings in 2011 under Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss. He made 7727 Test runs at 42.69, including 22 hundreds, and is third on England’s all-time ODI run-scorers list behind Eoin Morgan and Joe Root.Perhaps his finest hour came in 2013, when his 562 runs in the Ashes – including hundreds at Trent Bridge, Lord’s and Chester-le-Street – helped England to a 3-0 series win. Other highlights included scores of 159 and 235 from No. 3 in England’s 4-0 series win against India in 2011 and vital runs on the tour of South Africa in 2009-10, which helped to alter perceptions that he fell short when the going got tough.

He could easily have steered England to their first 50-over world trophy, too, opening the batting in the 2013 Champions Trophy where he started the tournament with a player-of-the-match effort of 91 against Australia. At the time when he became a casualty of the dismal 2015 World Cup campaign, he was England’s leading ODI run-scorer.He was dropped from the Test side surprisingly early, after struggling for both fluency and runs in England’s 2-0 defeat to Pakistan in the UAE in 2015-16. There were murmurs of a possible recall as he piled on the runs in 2018, but it never materialised. In county cricket, he was part of nine trophy-winning sides: County Championships in 2004 and 2012, the Division Two title in 2008 and 2018, the B&H Cup in 2002, Division Two of the Pro40 in 2009, the CB40 in 2010, the T20 Blast in 2014 and the Royal London Cup in 2016. He also played for Perth Scorchers when they won the 2016-17 Big Bash League.Bell looks set for a career in coaching, after working as England’s batting coach at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year. He said that the stint had “added fuel” to his “already sizeable coaching ambitions” and that he hoped to “continue to be heavily involved in the sport.”

Arsenal began their 2024/25 Youth League campaign with a disappointing 4-1 loss to Atalanta, but it wasn't an entirely disappointing evening as 14-year-old Dowman broke three records. Gunners boss Max Portman gave Dowman the start in Italy making him the second-youngest debutant and the youngest starter in a Youth League clash.

Dowman also scored Arsenal's lone goal on the night early in the second half as he became the youngest goal scorer in the Youth League, beating the record set by 16-year-old Rin Ahmeti, one day earlier. Dowman was also highly praised by former Arsenal youth coach Jack Wilshere last season, as he said the forward could easily be fast-tracked into the Mikel Arteta's side.

  • WHAT WILSHERE SAID

Speaking to the club media last season after Dowman's U-18s debut at the age of 13, Wilshere said: “There’s always a concern when fielding such a young player in these matches, but if you’re good enough you’re old enough.

“He can be more consistent but he’s only 14 and hasn’t even started his GCSEs yet."

Celtic now want to sign powerful £1.2m striker compared to Didier Drogba

Celtic are believed to be interested in signing a new up-and-coming striker who has already been compared to Chelsea icon Didier Drogba.

Celtic transfer rumours

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers have one final game of the 2023/24 season, looking to win the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park against Rangers after sealing the Scottish Premiership title. It would be their fourth victory over their rivals this season.

After the weekend, then the club’s full attention will be on the summer transfer market, looking to bolster Rodgers’ squad with a new goalkeeper, winger and striker at the very least. The calibre of player Celtic target could be interesting, especially after Rodgers previously admitted that the club could be “braver” with their additions:

“I would go with supporters thinking we could maybe be a little bit braver in terms of bringing in another level of player. But that’s up to me to try and fix that over the course of my time here. You look at the strategy here and you have to be careful because in some ways it has worked. You bring in players for a minimal fee and then they go out and make the club a lot of money.

“What I want to hopefully balance in my time here is that we can still do that, because it is an important part of the modern game. But we also want to be brave enough to hang our hat on a ready-made player.”

In attack, a permanent bid for loanee Adam Idah is reportedly being readied, with Norwich City valuing the striker at £5m. However, a younger attacker is also now on the Parkhead radar.

Celtic keen to sign new £1m+ forward

According to The Daily Mail, Celtic are interested in signing highly-rated young Ghana striker Aziz Musibau from Dreams FC. The Hoops aren’t alone, though, with Premier League side Aston Villa also keen after a successful season under Unai Emery, whereas Serie A champions Inter Milan are also tracking the attacker.

The report states that Dreams FC are looking to receive £1.2m for Musibau’s services, with Ghana believing their U20 international could ‘spearhead their seniors' qualifying campaign for the next World Cup’.

European giants make contact to sign Celtic playmaker

ByCharlie Smith May 23, 2024

Musibau is still just 17 years of age but is clearly highly thought of, already drawing comparisons to Drogba due ‘to his barnstorming running style and powerful shot’.

Celtic may well have a battle on their hands to secure the forward’s services ahead of Aston Villa and Inter Milan, although all three will be able to offer Champions League football next season.

Whether or not Musibau is ready to make the big step up next season remains to be seen, and if he does end up joining Celtic, the forward will be just the second-ever Ghanaian to play for the Hoops after Mubarak Wakaso.

Shoaib Malik whacks fifty as Peshawar Zalmi win

There was a lot of batting firepower on show after rain curtailed the game to 15-overs a side

The Report by Peter Della Penna05-Mar-2020

Shoaib Malik top scored for Peshawar Zalmi•PCB

The ageless Shoaib Malik shows no signs of slowing down, notching his 60th T20 half-century and doing so at a pace of two runs per ball to set the tone for a resounding 30-run win for Peshawar Zalmi over Quetta Gladiators in Darren Sammy’s first match in charge as head coach of Zalmi after stepping down as captain. In a match that was reduced to 15 overs following a 90-minute delay, Zalmi were sent in by Sarfaraz Ahmed at the toss, but Gladiators bowling unit could not back up their captain’s decision. They were also affected by an injury to Naseem Shah, who conceded just six runs across the first and third overs but walked off the field with a leg injury after the fourth over and could not complete his quota. While Shah went for three per over, nobody else in the Gladiators lineup went for less than 11 per over.Kamran Akmal started to rev up the Zalmi innings in the fifth over, hammering Mohammad Hasnain for back-to-back sixes over backward square and long-on. Though he fell attempting a third over midwicket to give Hasnain the first of his four expensive scalps, Malik and Haider Ali were relentless in attacking during their 54-run third-wicket stand across the next 30 balls. Despite being six wickets down with nine balls left, Zalmi managed to add a further 27 runs thanks to some lusty hitting from Lewis Gregory as Tymal Mills could not contain with his changes of pace.Jason Roy and Shane Watson got the Gladiators off to a fiery start in their reply, but the Gladiators lost momentum after Watson fell driving Hasan Ali to extra cover in the fifth to end a 45-run opening stand. New Zalmi captain Wahab Riaz was on a hat-trick in the 11th over after dismissing Ahmed Shehzad and Ben Cutting, the latter wicket effectively snuffing out the Gladiators last genuine threat after he had clattered two sixes in his first six balls at the crease. Riaz struck once more in the 13th to bowl Sarfaraz Ahmed, capping off his haul to help cement his first win since taking over the captaincy duties from Sammy.Turning pointWatson’s dismissal itself wasn’t necessarily the turning point, but more so Shehzad’s lack of aggression after replacing him at the crease at No. 3. Shehzad scored four runs off his first eight deliveries, putting pressure on Roy to take more risks. Roy fell attempting a slog sweep to Yasir Shah’s legspin to end the eighth for 45. Shehzad’s lack of efficiency allowed pressure to mount further before Riaz struck to remove him for 10 off 17 balls, skying a heave over cover before Cutting fell next ball slamming Riaz flat to deep midwicket. Shehzad’s go slow meant Gladiators needed 72 off the last 26 balls, far too steep a rate for them to come back.Star of the dayMalik was his typical efficient self. He scored off his first eight deliveries and only had a total of five dot balls before his wicket became the sixth. Otherwise, he rarely let the bowlers breathe. Just when it looked like a door might be cracked open for the Gladiators to reel back the Zalmi run rate following the wicket of Ali in the 10th, Malik made sure momentum stayed with Zalmi by driving Sohail Khan over mid-off, then pulling him through midwicket for another four. He was dropped next ball skying a drive to Nawaz at cover sweeper on 36, but continued to press on until crossing his fifty off 25 balls. The big missRoughly five minutes was lost when the third umpire was keeping everyone on the edge of their seats waiting to find out whether or not Riaz had any part of his foot behind the line on the delivery he bowled to get Cutting out. While it was very tight, leagues might want to consider putting a time limit on the amount of time it takes to come to a decision on reviews in order to speed up play because the umpire could have taken all day and still not come to a conclusive decision.Where the teams standZalmi move up into a tie for second place with Islamabad United on seven points, though United have a better net run rate. Gladiators are tied for fourth place with Karachi Kings on six points, though Gladiators are technically fifth due to an inferior net run rate.

West Indies finish fifth after washout

The Caribbean side were 62 for 1 after Australia had made 319 for 8 when the rains came down

Sreshth Shah07-Feb-2020Due to the fifth-place playoff game being washed out, West Indies finished fifth in the 2020 U-19 World Cup while Australia had to settle for sixth. Although Australia posted 319 for 8 in their first innings, and looked ahead of the game when the rain came down in Benoni, their three-wicket loss to West Indies in the group stage consigned them to sixth in the tournament.Australia’s innings had half-centuries from opener Liam Scott, No. 5 Lachlan Hearne and No. 6 Cooper Connolly, who scored 66, 58 and 64 respectively. They were off to a flying start thanks to Scott and fellow opener Sam Fanning, who made 99 in 15.5 overs, but a string of dismissals had them at 174 for 4 at the 30-over mark. The brisk fifties from Hearne and Connolly though, helped Australia aim for a 300-plus total, and if it wasn’t for a bunch of wickets at the death overs, they could’ve scored more than the 319 they eventually got. Right-arm offspinner Matthew Patrick was the most successful West Indies bowler, taking 3 for 34 in his ten overs.West Indies began their chase of 320 quickly too. Openers Kimani Melius and Leonardo Julien struck 62 runs in 12.3 overs, before the former fell, cutting Scott to point. As soon as Melius began to leave the field, the skies opened up, and continuous rain forced the umpires to call the game off some time later.According to tournament rules, in case of a washed out knockout game, the team that finished higher on points at the end of the group stage would finish higher. West Indies were unbeaten in Group B, while Australia had lost to West Indies.

Ten Hag could ease LB woes by trialling Man Utd "monster" in new role

Manchester United have turned more corners than a Formula One driver this season, having repeatedly produced a statement performance to help lift the mood around Old Trafford, only to then meekly throw it all away in their next outing.

That was notably the case at the weekend, as two weeks on from the thrilling 4-3 win at home to rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup, the Red Devils all but ended any realistic hopes of Champions League qualification away to a struggling Brentford side.

Mere moments away from what would have been a richly underserved smash-and-grab win at the Gtech, in true United fashion the visitors buckled at the death, with Kristoffer Ajer heaping the scrutiny back on Erik ten Hag – for some now a 'dead man walking' as the summer looms.

For all the tactical questions that can be asked of the former Ajax boss, the Dutchman has certainly not been helped by injuries throughout this wretched campaign, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka's dismal 2/10 display – as dished out by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst – once again laying the bare the issues at left-back.

With that in mind, here's a look at the 'options' Ten Hag has at his disposal to fill that problem position, in the absences of both Luke Shaw and the forgotten Tyrell Malacia…

1

The Obvious Option

Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot

While Wan-Bissaka performed admirably up against Mohamed Salah just a fortnight ago, his shortcomings as a makeshift left-back were brutally exposed on Saturday night, having lost the ball on 12 occasions in what was a worrying performance.

It may then make sense to switch the former Crystal Palace man to the opposite flank moving forward, with Diogo Dalot arguably a better or more obvious option to slot in on the left, having done so on 35 occasions in his career to date.

While currently shining on the right – having perhaps emerged as Ten Hag's 'best player' of late – the Portuguese ace may represent one of few practical alternatives to Shaw and Malacia, having scored in that left-sided role against Wigan Athletic this season, as well as against Nottingham Forest last term in the Premier League meeting at the City Ground.

2

The Tactical Tweak

Lisandro Martinez

Even with the recent injury concerns for Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane at centre-back, it may be time for Ten Hag to trial his returning "monster" Lisandro Martinez – as hailed by Shaw – at left-back, with the Argentine the only senior, left-footed defender available at the club at present.

The World Cup winner marked his return from an eight-week absence as a late substitute against the Bees, albeit while enduring a tricky cameo after failing to win a single duel and also being restricted to just 13 touches.

In need of minutes in order to get fully back up to speed, deploying Martinez in that left-back berth may not be the worst idea, particularly considering his innate quality on the ball, showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 6% among his European peers for pass completion across the last 365 days, as per FBref.

What also sets the 5 foot 10 menace apart is his ability to carry the ball out from the back with ease, as shown by the fact that he also ranks in the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90 and in the top 7% for assists, ensuring he could provide an outlet down the left flank to support the likes of Marcus Rashford.

Taking the star centre-back away from the heart of the backline is not ideal, but at a time when needs must, Ten Hag has few other solutions…

3

The Wildcard Option

Harry Amass

At a time when 16-year-old Lamine Yamal is shining at Barcelona, perhaps United could unleash their own precocious teen in the form of Harry Amass, with the former Watford starlet currently thriving in the youth ranks at left-back.

A bold call it would be to turn to a player who has only just turned 17, yet Amass is already viewed as "Luke Shaw's successor" – according to journalist Alex Turk – following a promising first six months or so in Manchester.

The England U17 international has scored once and provided three assists in 14 U18 Premier League games in 2023/24 thus far, having also made his debut for the U21 side against Middlesbrough back in early March.

Having seen the success of promoting the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho of late – with a young Rashford also once benefitting from an injury crisis in the first-team – there could be worse ideas than to hand Amass chance in the coming weeks.

Man Utd could soon replicate Saka's rise by unleashing "wonderkid" at LB

Dyche may have sold Everton’s "unbelievable" 14-goal talent too soon

Everton have excelled defensively under boss Sean Dyche, with the Toffees having the best defensive record of any side outside the Premier League's top four.

The club's good defensive record is partially down to Jordan Pickford, with the England international making 86 saves in the top-flight – the ninth-best record of any 'keeper in the league.

Pickford has also kept the joint second-most clean sheets in the division, with Arsenal's David Raya the only 'keeper to register more.

The combination of Dyche's back-four and Pickford have given the Toffees a fighting chance of preserving their record of being in every Premier League season, despite the club's six-point deduction earlier this campaign.

Everton midfielderIdrissa Gueye.

However, the club have struggled in front of goal this season, with the Toffees only scoring 29 times in 28 games, with only bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United scoring less.

The club may have missed a trick by selling one player, who was on the books at Goodison Park with the former Toffee in great goalscoring form this season.

Ellis Simms' stats at Everton

After joining Everton's academy at 16, striker Ellis Simms instantly became a success within the club's academy, scoring 32 times in 21 U18 Premier League games – a truly staggering record.

He rapidly progressed at Goodison, scoring eight times in 15 games for the club's U21 side during the 2019/20 season, before making his first step into senior football with Blackpool just a year later.

Simms notched up ten goals in his 24 games for the Tangerines, a record that would see him make his Premier League debut for the Toffees during the 2021/22 season.

The striker started and featured for 62 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but he would have to wait nearly 18 months for his next opportunity within the Toffees' first-team setup.

The youngster enjoyed a 17-game stint on loan at Championship side Sunderland, scoring seven times before being recalled by boss Dyche.

He would go on to make 11 appearances for Everton between January and May, only featuring for 219 minutes, starting just twice.

However, the forward did score his first Toffees goal in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea – a real full-circle moment for the youngster as he scored against the side he made his top-flight debut against.

Ellis Simms' stats since leaving Everton

The club decided to sell 23-year-old Simms for £8m to Championship side Coventry City during the summer of 2023, with the marksman enjoying a brilliant scoring season.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

He's bagged 14 goals so far this campaign – a tally higher than any member of Everton's first-team setup, with Abdoulaye Doucoure achieving the most with just six.

Simms' has scored five of his goals in the FA Cup, including a double against Wolves at the weekend that secured the Sky Blues' place in the semi-final.

The "unbelievable" striker, as dubbed by Sky Sports pundit Karen Carney, allowed the Toffees to make a sizable amount of money on a player who had only shown glimpses of quality during his time at the club.

However, his form in the Championship this season could see the club regret selling the striker, with the 23-year-old having the potential to become a top-quality forward in the years to come.
