  • Ricky Ponting’s dismissals 4 and 3 in this match was only the fourth time he has been out for single digits in both innings in 113 Tests. The previous occasions were 9 and 4 versus West Indies in Sydney in Nov 1996, a pair versus Pakistan in Hobart in Nov 1999, 6 and 0 against India in Kolkata in Mar 2001.
  • Michael Clarke scored freely against the spinners during his second innings. He scored 26 off 32 balls against Kumble, and 21 off 27 balls against Harbhajan Singh at a combined strike-rate of nearly 80.
  • Harbhajan did not take a wicket in the first innings but he picked up three in the second and went past the milestone of 250 Test wickets. Harbhajan became the fourth Indian, after Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev and Bishan Bedi, to take 250 Test wickets when he had Ponting caught by Rahul Dravid in the second innings. He is also the sixth spinner to take 250 wickets.
  • Brett Lee became the sixth Australian to take 250 Test wickets. The others are Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Dennis Lillee, Craig McDermott and Jason Gillespie. Anil Kumble was Lee’s 250th Test wicket.
  • Kumble and Muttiah Muralitharan now share the record for most caught and bowled victims in Tests. Phil Jaques was Kumble’s 31st caught-and-bowled victim.
  • Dravid’s catch of Ricky Ponting was his 160th in Tests. The three people
ahead of him are Mark Waugh (181), Brian Lara (164) and Stephen Fleming (161).

  • Matthew Hayden has now scored 1072 runs at the MCG making him the seventh batsman to pass 1000 at this venue.
  • Australia have set India 499 to win which will smash the world record for the highest successful chase should India beat the odds and achieve it. The highest target that a team has successfully chased at the MCG is 332 when England won by three wickets in 1928. West Indies’ successful chase of 418 against Australia in Antigua in 2003 is the highest overall in Tests.

Jacob Bethell held his nerve under pressure in the final over to guide Birmingham Bears to a two-wicket victory over Durham in a thriller at Seat Unique Riverside, keeping the visitors on top of the Vitality Blast North Group. The Bears were miserly with the ball after winning the toss. Hasan Ali was excellent at the top of the order and collected figures of 2-15 from his four overs, while Danny Briggs also claimed two strikes. Ollie Robinson and Ashton Turner notched fifties, but Durham’s total of 146 for 5 looked short of par at the interval.Alex Davies and Rob Yates led an explosive start to the Bears’ chase, sharing an opening stand of 80 to put the visitors ahead of the rate. But, Nathan Sowter continued his impressive campaign with two wickets to halt the Birmingham charge. Ben Raine then set nerves jangling with two in two in the 17th over and he performed heroics again with the same feat in the 19th.The game turned again when Bethell held his composure from the final over to smash a six and a four in back-to-back balls to steer Birmingham over the one with three balls to spare, edging them closer to a quarter-final berth. After Graham Clark scored three early boundaries, Durham’s momentum was halted by losing both openers within three balls. Chris Woakes made the breakthrough on his return as Alex Lees was undone by a slower delivery before Clark was bowled by Hasan.Hasan produced a brilliant spell with the new ball, bowling three overs for the cost of just seven runs, limiting the hosts to 29 from the powerplay. The Bears continued to restrict the Durham batting ranks as the run rate hovered at just below six an over. The pressure to score allowed Briggs to strike in successive deliveries. Michael Jones was caught on the fence by Jake Lintott, who produced a clever catch on the rope to prevent a maximum, while Brydon Carse fell first ball.At 60 for 4, the hosts could ill afford to lose further wickets. Robinson and Turner duly responded with an excellent partnership worth 86 to allow Durham to post a competitive total. Turner found his timing against the Birmingham spinners and raced to his half-century from only 29 balls with seven fours and slog-sweep six against Lintott.Robinson was more sedate compared to his team-mate, but still brought up his fourth fifty of the season with a massive strike over the rope against Woakes. He tried to add another off the final ball from Hasan, only to be caught on the relay by Lintott and Ed Barnard.Birmingham had no difficulty adjusting to the pitch in the powerplay and made the chase seem straightforward. Davies and Yates found the boundary with ease without taking risks, racing to fifty after 4.2 overs. The Bears were a staggering 37 runs ahead of the home side at the end of the powerplay, ending the opening six overs 66 without loss.Davies and Yates both fell for 40 as Liam Trevaskis and Wayne Parnell prevented the visitors from racing away with the chase. On his 400th T20 appearance, Glenn Maxwell’s attempt to reverse-sweep Sowter to the rope ended his knock for 14 and the legspinner sent Dan Mousley on his way to put the pressure on.Raine set up a tense finale by matching Briggs’ exploits removing Chris Benjamin and Ed Barnard in successive deliveries. The right-armer then performed similar heroics to dismiss Woakes and Hasan with two in two in the 19th. But, Bethell dispatched Trevaskis for a six and four to guide his team to victory in the final over.

Better signing than Ekitike: Chelsea ready to launch bid for "elite" star

Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign took a disastrous turn when the Blues faced off against Flamengo in Philadelphia.

It was looking all rosy for Enzo Maresca’s side after Pedro Neto opened the scoring, but a second successive win for the West Londoners in the competition ended up falling out of their grasp in horrible fashion.

Nicolas Jackson’s second-half dismissal was the beginning of Chelsea’s downfall, leading to Filipe Luis’ Flamengo taking home a surprise 3-1 victory.

This loss would have angered Chelsea fans, knowing full well that the Blues are looking to upgrade on Jackson soon in the chaotic summer transfer market, as seen in their ongoing pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt gem Hugo Ekitike.

Everything you need to know about the Club World Cup.

ByCharlie Smith Jun 13, 2025 Chelsea ready to launch bid to solve problem position

Jackson could well find he’s out of the door soon, as the Blues’ patience begins to wear very thin. Yet, the shock defeat to Flamengo would have also made Chelsea aware that they need to seal an upgrade in the goalkeeper department too.

    Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As per a new report by TEAMTalk, Chelsea are ready to go all in for a new goalkeeper very soon to replace the inconsistent Robert Sanchez.

It’s stated that the Blues have not cooled off regarding their interest in AC Milan shot-stopper Mike Maignan, with a second bid now being prepared for when the Club World Cup finishes.

    AC Milan's MikeMaignanreacts

A bid around the £20m mark, which includes add-ons, could well seal the deal here, with Chelsea in dire need of a new, reliable ‘keeper, particularly if reserve stopper Djordje Petrovic bids farewell to Stamford Bridge for good this summer.

Why signing Maignan should be a bigger priority than Ekitike

Whilst Jackson does currently find himself in the bad books at Chelsea after his red card incident, he has at least managed to show off his class in flashes when bagging 30 Blues strikes and counting.

Whereas, Sanchez is becoming more and more known for his error-strewn performances in West London with the capture of Maignan perhaps a more pressing matter than landing Ekitike.

After all, whilst Ekitike appears to be the flavour of the month with the Blues, Liverpool and Manchester United all sniffing around, the blistering Frenchman has flopped before when a big move has been put in front of him.

Indeed, the 23-year-old only netted three goals on the books of Paris St. Germain after a breakout Stade De Reims spell. Therefore, similar pressures could get to him again after a 22-goal season leading the line for Frankfurt, especially if a reported £60m price tag comes to fruition.

On the contrary, the much-talked-about Maignan is a seasoned professional now at the highest level, as seen in his glistening resume of 343 appearances and counting for both Milan and Lille in some tough, challenging divisions.

Therefore, the “elite” keeper – as he was once labelled by Liverpool’s number one Alisson – should be able to arrive at Stamford Bridge and succeed, with plenty of clean sheets often following him wherever he goes.

In total, Maignan is now up to 115 clean sheets for both the Ligue 1 club and his current Serie A employers, with last season seeing him collect 14 of those. To add context, the error-stricken Sanchez lagged behind on ten, with five saves still not enough to keep Flamengo at bay last time out.

At around £20m or so, Chelsea really must prioritise adding the Frenchman to their camp soon over progressing with the far more expensive Ekitike deal, with Maignan having a way smoother June to date too, keeping a clean sheet for his nation against Germany in the Nations League.

The fact of the matter is that Maresca has plenty of attackers at his disposal. Regardless of Jackson’s ill-discipline, they will find a way to score goals. The acquisition of a new gloveman, however, could be the difference between winning titles.

Rashid Khan withdraws from PSL as he continues rehab

Rashid Khan has withdrawn from the Pakistan Super League as he continues to take a cautious approach in his return from back surgery.Rashid has played for Lahore Qalandars in each of the last three PSL seasons, winning titles in 2022 and 2023. He was retained by the franchise in the ‘silver’ salary bracket ahead of December’s draft, on the understanding that he was unlikely to be available for the 2024 edition but could then be retained for future seasons. He has since officially withdrawn from the tournament as he continues his rehabilitation, having undergone surgery in November. Qalandars will be able to secure another player in Rashid’s place in the supplementary and replacement draft, which the PCB confirmed will be held virtually on Monday.Rashid travelled to India with his Afghanistan team-mates during their T20I series earlier this month, but was not deemed fit enough to play, having previously withdrawn from both the Big Bash League and the SA20. “It is a case of us making sure that we are really careful with his back,” Jonathan Trott, their head coach, said.”He is such an influential player: we have to make sure he is 100% ready and not rush him back from that type of surgery… when he is ready, he will be the first one to get on the field. He has got a few more appointments and check-ups to make sure everything is OK, so there is no real time-frame. I hope it is sooner rather than later, but there is no pressure and no rush.”ESPNcricinfo understands that Rashid is on course to be fit in time to fulfil his IPL commitments with Gujarat Titans. He could even feature for Afghanistan at some stage before then, most likely during Ireland’s multi-format tour to the UAE which runs from February 28 until March 18.Lahore Qalandars will also sign a partial replacement for Dan Lawrence, who was drafted into England’s Test squad to face India after Harry Brook withdrew for personal reasons. Noor Ahmad, a platinum pick for Peshawar Zalmi, has withdrawn due to international commitments while Zalmi will also sign a partial replacement for Naveen-ul-Haq.Karachi Kings will sign partial replacements for Kieron Pollard and Tim Seifert, while Quetta Gladiators need a partial replacement for Wanindu Hasaranga. Tom Curran, who recently sustained a knee injury while playing in the Big Bash League, has withdrawn from the full PSL season after he was initially drafted by Islamabad United.

Better than Maddison: Spurs' "titanic" 9/10 ace showed why he's undroppable

Well, that was just about the perfect performance from Tottenham Hotspur last night.

Yes, it would have been even better had they kept a clean sheet and taken a three-goal lead to Norway next week, but as things stand, Ange Postecoglou’s side look well-placed to make it to the Europa League Final.

Moreover, apart from a few minutes towards the end, it was a pretty comfortable affair, and if anyone looked like scoring more goals, it was the Lilywhites and not FK Bodø/Glimt.

Practically every starter put in a shift to be proud of, but two stood out in particular: James Maddison and someone who now must start the next game.

    Maddison's game vs Bodø/Glimt

While it was a big night for the whole team, it was a massive one for Maddison.

With Spurs being at home and undoubtedly firm favourites ahead of kickoff, it was down to the former Leicester City star to assert himself on proceedings and act as his side’s chief creator, which he did with aplomb.

In fact, for much of the first half, he was near enough unplayable, popping up here, there and everywhere before grabbing his goal in the 34th minute to secure a two-goal cushion for the North Londoners.

It might sound somewhat hyperbolic, but it’s an opinion shared by Spurs writer Alasdair Gold, who awarded the Englishman a 9/10 match rating at full-time, describing it as ‘a really creative performance.’

The only negative from the game for Maddison, which could be a massive one, was that he went off injured in the 65th minute, and until his fitness is cleared up, it’ll be a nervous wait for fans.

However, as superb as the mercurial number ten was, another starter was just as good, if not a little better.

    Spurs' other stand-out star

While the likes of Richarlison, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson all put in serious shifts for Spurs last night, the starter in question is none other than Pedro Porro.

The Spanish full-back has received his fair share of scathing criticism this season – sometimes justifiably – for his occasionally haphazard defending, but against the Norwegian champions, he hardly put a foot wrong in that regard.

Moreover, and far more importantly, it was a match in which he showcased his game-breaking offensive qualities.

For example, on several occasions in the first half, the “titanic” right-back, as dubbed by The Athletic’s former Spurs correspondent Charlie Eccleshare, managed to ping a sensational ball over their opposition’s backline for his teammates to latch onto, and it was that saw Maddison score his goal.

We weren’t the only ones impressed with the 25-year-old either, as Gold also awarded him a 9/10 match rating, describing him as ‘Tottenham’s best player on the night’ and crediting him for preventing ‘what likely would have been a goal’ in the 70th minute.

His statistics also make for decent reading, as in 95 minutes of action, he provided one assist from an expected assists figure of 0.47, made four clearances, wasn’t dribbled past a single time, made two interceptions, didn’t commit a foul, created one big chance and played four key passes.

Ultimately, Spurs put in what was almost the perfect performance last night, and while the entire team deserve serious praise, Maddison and Porro stood out that little bit more.

    – O juiz estava estranho, falando que ia me tirar do jogo.

Luke Wells sets up Lancashire win with maiden T20 half-century

Falcons’ total underpinned by classy Wayne Madsen fifty but Lightning begin as they mean to finish

Lancashire Lightning beat Derbyshire Falcons by four wickets to start the 2023 Vitality Blast campaign as they aim to end it – with victory at Edgbaston. The Blast will conclude in Birmingham with Finals Day on July 15 and Lightning took an impressive first step towards that showpiece with a win in the first half of the inaugural Blast Off opener in the Second City sunshine. The Falcons’ 179 for 5, underpinned by Wayne Madsen’s classy 50 from 35 balls, was solid but no more than par on a good batting pitch.Lightning then reached 183 for 6 with four balls to spare after Luke Wells laid the foundation with a violent 66 off 35 balls, his maiden T20 half-century.After the Falcons were put in, Luke Wood began with a wide but his second ball was straight enough to win an lbw decision against Haider Ali. Madsen was soon motoring to his 25th T20 half-century though, supported by a sprinkling of lively, if fleeting, cameos.Second-wicket pair Luis Reece (23 off 21) and Madsen added 64 in 48 balls before the former fell lbw to Tom Hartley. Madsen struck four sixes on his way to a 34-ball fifty but perished next ball when he lifted Danny Lamb to Hartley at deep midwicket.Leus du Plooy clubbed three sixes in a 16-ball 33 then fell in pursuit of another when he holed out to Wood. Anuj Dal and Aneurin Donald connected with a blow or two and, after Mattie McKiernan clouted Tom Bailey for a last-over six, only the openers had failed to clear the ropes. The suspicion was, however, that it was a 200-pitch and the Falcons were a few short – and so it proved.Even without star batters Keaton Jennings (injured) and Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone and Jos Buttler (IPL-duty) Lightning reeled in their target. They started briskly as Pakistan quick Zaman Khan suffered a bracing welcome to the Blast. His first ball was hoisted far over long leg for six by Wells in an over that went for 18. Zak Chappell’s opening over then went for 15 as the Lightning thundered to 44 in three overs.Opening pair Wells and George Bell added 59 from 26 balls before the latter spliced Khan to mid on. Steven Croft was run out after finding himself at the same end as Wells but the opener thrashed a 24-ball fifty and left his side very strongly placed, needing 68 from ten overs, when he fell in familiar Blast fashion, caught in the leg-side deep.Daryl Mitchell’s cleanly-hit 31 off 19 balls kept Lightning’s foot on the Falcons’ throat and victory was closed out with more comfort than a last-over finish suggests.

Ange can forget about Kulusevski by unleashing "incredible" Spurs star

After succumbing to their first Premier League defeat since January last time out, Tottenham Hotspur return to Europa League action tonight.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have endured a torrid year on the domestic front this season, but they have looked far more dangerous in European competition.

The North Londoners finished the league stage of the competition in fourth place, with five wins, two draws and just a single defeat to their name, allowing them to bypass the play-off round altogether.

However, things can never be easy for the Lilywhites, as they will have to take on AZ Alkmaar without the sensational Dejan Kulusevski – although Ange may have just the solution within his squad.

Why Kulusevski can't play against AZ Alkmaar

He has had impressive campaigns in the past, but it would probably be fair to describe this season as Kulusevski’s best in a Spurs shirt.

Despite moving between playing on the wing and in the middle of the park, the Swedish international has remained remarkably effective for much of the year.

In just 42 appearances, totalling 3054 minutes, the Stockholm-born dynamo has scored ten goals and provided ten assists.

That means the former Juventus ace has averaged a goal involvement every 2.1 games, or every 152.7 minutes, so the news that he’s now out injured is a real problem.

When speaking to the press yesterday afternoon, Postecoglou confirmed that the 24-year-old had a “knock on the foot” and that while it’s “nothing serious” he is “unlikely to be back before the international break.”

It’s not an ideal situation ahead of a crucial knockout game, but fortunately, there is an incredibly talented player within the squad who should be able to cover for his output in the middle of the park.

The Spurs star who can cover for Kulusevski

For once, it feels as if Postecoglu has a few options for how to cover for an injured player, but to ensure his side remain a serious attacking threat, there is only one answer: James Maddison.

Behind the former Juve star, there is a strong argument that the Englishman is the squad’s most creative and dangerous midfielder, so keeping him in the lineup in light of the news around the Swede makes perfect sense to us.

Moreover, while the former Leicester City star can run hot and cold at times, he’s actually been reasonably effective this season.

In his 34 appearances so far, totalling just 2039 minutes, the “incredible” ace, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored ten goals and provided seven assists.

That means he’s currently averaging a goal involvement every other game, or every 119.94 minutes, which is actually quite a bit better than Kulusevski.

On top of that, FBref has placed him in the top 1% of Premier League midfielders for actual and expected non-penalty goals, the top 5% for assists and progressive passes, the top 3% for shot-creating actions and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, not having Kulusevski fit for selection is undoubtedly an issue, but in Maddison, Spurs have an incredibly dynamic midfielder who can come in and make up for his absence.
