Coventry City defeat Oxford United 3-2.
Haji Wright scores last-gasp winner.
Big season ahead for winger.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Haji Wright was the hero for Coventry City Friday evening, scoring a double as they defeated Oxford United 3-2 on Matchday 2 of the Championship campaign.
Scoring their first goal of the 2024-25 season, the U.S. international put Coventry up 1-0 in the first half, timing his far-post run brilliantly, smashing home a header 14 minutes into the match.
After trading off goals to eventually see the match level at 2-2 with the final whistle looming, Wright arrived on the scene once more.
Seizing a defensive error, the 26-year-old intercepted the ball, rounded the goalkeeper in a 1v1, and slotted it into the net with seconds left, as his jubilant teammates rushed to celebrate.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Coventry got their first three points of the season and are 1-0-1 after falling on opening day to Stoke City, 1-0.
Midweek, in the EFL Cup, Wright logged 62 minutes as Coventry defeated Bristol City 1-0 to advance to the next round of the tournament as well.
The winger participated in Copa America 2024 with the U.S. men's national team, but failed to earn a start during the competition under Gregg Berhalter. In 2023-24 with Coventry, he scored 19 goals and notched seven assists across all competitions.
Now, with two goals already under his belt, Wright could be making his case for more playing time on the national team side. He is continuing to prove himself as one of the best attackers in the Championship.

WHAT NEXT FOR WRIGHT?
Coventry and Wright are back in action next Saturday against Bristol City again, this time in Championship play. The U.S. national team returns to action in September during the FIFA international break, facing Canada and New Zealand in a series of friendlies. The roster for those two matches has not been released yet.
West Indies white-ball captain to play eight games for Steelbacks from early June
ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2020Kieron Pollard will join Northamptonshire for the middle stages of the 2020 Vitality Blast.Allrounder Pollard, who was named West Indies white-ball captain in September, has played 499 T20s, more than any other player.Pollard will join the squad for eight games, beginning with the Steelbacks’ first home fixture on June 5 against Durham, subject to approval from his home board. He will then lead West Indies in their bid to defend the World T20 title in October.”Now, visa criteria permitting, I see this as a wonderful opportunity to be back in England again playing in the action-packed Vitality Blast tournament,” Pollard said. “I want to thank Northants for welcoming me to their group of exciting players. I know they have some amazing fans and I look forward to entertaining them and bringing more success to the club.”Of course as captain of the West Indies team and defending champions I have one eye on the ICC T20 World Cup later this year in Australia, but I can assure you my focus will be 100 percent on winning games for Northants when I arrive in June.”Pollard is poised to become the second player behind Gayle to score 10,000 T20 runs with 9,966 at an average of 30.85 and with a strike rate of 150.40. With a highest score of 104 and 49 half-centuries, Pollard adds genuine firepower to the Steelbacks’ middle order.Steelbacks captain Josh Cobb was looking forward to welcoming Pollard to The County Ground.”His stats are unbelievable,” Cobb said. “We’ve actually won a trophy together before at the Dhaka Gladiators, though I’m not sure he’ll remember that, so hopefully we can get another one together this year in the Blast.” Cobb said. The Steelbacks are Pollard’s 30th professional club and his first return to English domestic cricket since 2010, when he helped Somerset reach the T20 final.
Everton are reportedly interested in completing the signing of a prolific young attacking player who has been likened to Arsenal superstar Bukayo Saka.
Everton facing chaotic period
The Blues have so much on their plate at the moment, with Sean Dyche's side battling for their Premier League survival amid chaos off the pitch. There is still the looming threat of another points deduction for Everton, following Nottingham Forest's recent four-point penalty, and there is also the potential takeover of the club to deal with.
Away from all of that, the Merseysiders also continue to be linked with possible new signings, and Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati has emerged as a hugely exciting target, in what could be a swap deal involving Amadou Onana this summer.
Barcelona winger Ansu Fati.
The attacker has been on loan at Brighton this season, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Xavi last year, but he admittedly hasn't lit up the Premier League, scoring just twice in 15 appearances. At 21, there is still so much more to come, however, and he could become a crowd favourite with his pace and trickery out wide.
Former Celtic talent Karamoko Dembele has also been backed to head to Goodison Park, having been linkened to Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah across Stanley Park. There is also the potential for Jack Harrison's loan move from Leeds United to become a permanent one at the end of the current campaign, having done enough this season to justify being retained beyond May.
Everton preparing offer for Saka-esque star
According to a new update from Football Insider, Everton are keen on signing Arsenal youngster Omari Benjmain at the end of the season. The 18-year-old will be released by the Gunners in the summer, meaning he will be available on a free transfer.
The report goes on to state that the attacker "had a spell on trial at Everton since learning his fate and a well-placed source has told Football Insider that he has impressed Toffees chiefs", adding that he "has the potential to operate at Premier League level in future". An offer is now being prepared for him.

Benjamin would very much be considered a long-term signing rather than someone who would come straight in as a key player, but he is an exciting talent who could still have a massive future in the game.
The Welshman has been compared to Arsenal hero Saka, which immediately speaks volumes about his style of play and quality on the flanks, and he has been prolific for the Gunners' Under-18s, scoring 18 times in just 31 appearances, as well as chipping in with four assists.

Benjamin has also been capped a total of 14 times at youth team level of Wales, and if Dyche sees him as a player who he can mould into something special, he would be worth taking a punt on, especially as he would come in on a free.
After winning just three Championship games since arriving in December, Steven Schumacher is reportedly on the brink of dismissal at Stoke City. The Potters are currently facing Championship relegation and could now turn to a fresh face in an attempt to turn things around.
Next Stoke City manager news
Whilst Schumacher is yet to depart officially, Stoke's recent 2-1 loss against Cardiff City could prove to be the nail in the coffin of the former Plymouth Argyle manager. According to Graeme Bailey, he is on the brink and could go with anything but a win this weekend, with the Potters already eyeing a shock move for former manager Tony Pulis. The veteran is not considering ending his retirement as things stand, however.
Pulis would have been some appointment, given his previous record as Stoke manager from 2006 to 2013 in a period that saw his side sit comfortably in the Premier League's mid-table for the majority.

At 66-years-old and his last role coming at Sheffield Wednesday in 2020 though, Pulis' retirement is understandable and leaves the Potters turning elsewhere for options in their hunt to replace Schumacher, which could see Adrian Heath emerge.
According to Bailey for HITC, Heath is on Stoke's radar and could yet become the next manager in the hot seat at the Bet365 Stadium. Heath, like Pulis, already has a link to the Potters, having played over 100 games for the club during his playing days from 1979 to 1982. Now 63-years-old, the former midfielder could finally make his return.
Adrian Heath for Coventry City.
Now a manager, Heath recently saw his six-year stint at MLS side Minnesota United come to an end, leaving his career at a crossroads that Stoke can solve. As Schumacher's side continues to stutter, the 63-year-old is certainly an option to turn to.
Heath choice comes with risks
In the middle of a relegation battle that they must end victorious, Stoke City can ill afford to get their next managerial appointment wrong and there's an argument to suggest that Heath would be exactly that. The Potters need experience in this situation – hence their interest in Pulis – and turning to a manager who hasn't stepped foot in English football since 2007 wouldn't bring that. Now is not the time for the Potters to take risks, with the priority simply to avoid relegation at any and all cost.

Heath's preferred formation of 4-2-3-1 would at least implement a more offensive and free system than Schumacher's 4-3-3, but whether it would help turn a sinking ship around is unknown.
With just 12 games remaining in the Championship, those at the Bet365 Stadium must get their next decision right. Inside the relegation zone on goal difference, Stoke still have a realistic shot at survival, whether that be under Schumacher or, indeed, former player Heath.

Tottenham are thought to have added a £26 million striker to their transfer target list as they scour the market for long-term Harry Kane replacements.
Spurs eyeing new centre-forward this summer
Despite Richarlison's transformation under Ange Postecoglou this season, it remains the case that Spurs are keen to sign a new number nine.

The plan to bring in a striker was thought to be one for later in the year, with journalist Dean Jones saying late last year that Tottenham will sign a replacement for Kane once we get to 2024.
“I don't know what they will look for in a Kane replacement, but they would be silly not to be looking at Ferguson right now," said Jones to GiveMeSport, commenting on previous links to Brighton star Evan Ferguson.
"I know Manchester United have had an eye on Ferguson. I'm sure Chelsea will, too, given their recruitment policy. But Tottenham have to as well. They're going to have to sign another striker eventually. Son is good for now. With Richarlison, everything’s up in the air. They will sign a new striker once we get to 2024, and Ferguson has to be on the radar.”
Other reports suggest this is still firmly the case, with reporter Pete O'Rourke telling Football Insider that Tottenham wish to sign a marquee striker this summer.
"Tottenham are expected to sign a new marquee number nine this summer to replace departed legend Harry Kane," he wrote this month.
"Kane, 30, left Spurs last year (2023) after scoring 32 goals across all competitions for the Londoners in the 2022-23 campaign. It is believed Tottenham are stepping up their plans to land a marquee new forward in this year’s summer window. That is despite the promising form of their current strike force under Ange Postecoglou’s stewardship this term."
Amid their reported pursuits to shore up other key areas of the squad, though, it is unclear exactly how much club chiefs would be willing to spend on a goalscoring centre-forward.
Tottenham identify £26m Kane replacement Omar Marmoush
According to Bild, Spurs may have a cheaper option in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush.
Indeed, the German news outlet writes via Sport Witness that Tottenham have identified Marmoush as a striker target, and he could cost as little as €30m (£26m) to prise away from his club in the best-case scenario.

The Egyptian ace has bagged 10 goals and five assists in 18 Bundesliga appearances this season, with Eintracht boss Dino Toppmoller calling him "tireless".
"He brings a completely different energy to our attacking play through his penetrating runs and tireless work rate," said Toppmoller.
According to board president Nazmul Hassan, Bangladesh’s ODI captain has asked for a ‘couple of months’ to decide about his retirement
Mohammad Isam17-Aug-2019Mashrafe Mortaza has asked the BCB for two months to decide when he wants to retire from ODIs, according to board president Nazmul Hassan. On Saturday afternoon, Mashrafe was seen entering Nazmul’s BCB office, for what was probably his first official discussion with the board about his retirement. Other board directors were present during the meeting too.”Because we don’t have any ODIs until next March, Mashrafe has said that he needs another couple of months to be fully ready for a decision,” Hassan said. “We will respect that.”ESPNcricinfo understands that the BCB was exploring the possibility of holding a one-off ODI between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe next month, soon after the T20I tri-series.There are also plans for a fitting farewell for the country’s most successful limited-overs captain, but those will now have to wait until March next year when Bangladesh are, according to the latest Future Tours Programme, scheduled to play a home series against Zimbabwe.Speculation about Mashrafe”s retirement has been strong since he became a member of parliament in December 2018, but he has continued to lead the ODI side since then, in New Zealand, Ireland and then the World Cup in England. He missed Bangladesh’s last ODI series – in Sri Lanka – due to a recurring hamstring injury. Mashrafe has already retired from T20Is, while his injury issues have kept him away from Test cricket since 2009.

Australia’s women players have been caught in the middle of a tussle between the two boards stemming from tensions over scheduling
Daniel Brettig26-Apr-2019Conflict between Cricket Australia and the BCCI has left Australia’s female players confused and fuming about their absence from the list of players taking part in the IPL exhibition series due to take place in India next month. The announcement from the BCCI on Thursday that no Australians would be taking part in the exhibition tournament, a year after Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt and Beth Mooney all featured in the inaugural match, arrived with players still unsure about whether or not they would be travelling to India for the event.ESPNcricinfo understands that the decision not to include Australian women in the tournament is part of a wider disagreement between the two boards that also featured the BCCI’s insistence on CA honouring a touring commitment to play men’s ODIs in India in January next year, leaving Australian broadcasters angry about an absence of one day cricket on the home calendar while also taking the nation’s best players overseas in the midst of the Big Bash League.CA is believed to have been non-committal about the availability of women’s players for the IPL exhibition for some months, alongside negotiations about the men’s ODI series. However, as the world’s most powerful board put its foot down over the men’s ODI series, the CA chief executive Kevin Roberts broke from annual leave to travel to India for last-minute negotiations about the women’s IPL tournament – talks that now appear to have come to nought.”CA has never said the players will be unavailable. We have been working with the BCCI on this and assisted them with activating the visa process earlier in the week,” a CA spokesperson said. “We confirmed yesterday that the players would be released and able to participate in the tournament that commences on 6 May.”There was no indication at that time that there were any problems with this and the BCCI were grateful for the support of the women’s IPL. As was the case last year we are very supportive of the Women’s IPL and look forward to seeing some great games ahead of the Women’s Ashes.”The Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) indicated on Friday that the three players slated to take part – Lanning, Healy and Perry – were still eager to do so if an agreement can be reached between CA and the BCCI.”The Women’s T20 Challenge in India is a good opportunity to grow and develop the global interest in women’s cricket,” an ACA spokesperson said. “In speaking with the players we know they have been preparing to go and are still keen to play. To have no Australian players in the tournament would be an opportunity missed.”Last year’s first exhibition match was not without its troubles, with some disquiet about the nature of the contracts offered to the players to take part, including their terms and conditions. This year CA had been working to negotiate contracts collectively on behalf of their players, before the breakdown in talks that has led to their absence from playing lists named by the IPL.Australia are the reigning T20 World Cup champions after winning the global tournament in the Caribbean late last year, with Lanning, Perry and Healy arguably the world’s best players. CA’s development of the WBBL has been unashamed in its focus to be the world’s biggest women’s event, taking the place that the IPL occupies for the men’s game.
