West Brom Braced For Approach For "Very Talented" Key Figure

West Bromwich Albion are prepared to receive an approach from Leeds United to enquire about the services of Carlos Corberan, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

Is Carlos Corberan leaving West Brom?

The Spaniard was first appointed at The Hawthorns back in October 2022 and his debut season in the Midlands was a huge success having finished just three points outside of the Championship play-offs, and this impressive form in the dugout didn’t go unnoticed in the Premier League.

Sky Sports reported in February that the Whites were interested in a swoop for the 40-year-old to replace Jesse Marsch, but despite there being plenty of speculation that he would depart, he quickly shut down exit rumours by signing a new contract that keeps him at the club until 2027.

Following Sam Allardyce’s departure now though having failed to prevent his side from relegation, the Elland Road outfit are on the hunt for a new long-term boss, and if the following update is to be believed, there’s a chance they could come calling again for Corberan.

Are Leeds appointing Corberan?

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke, West Brom are “braced for an approach” from Leeds who have already begun their search for Allardyce’s successor ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Corberan is a manager that will be “on the radar” of the Yorkshire club due to not only their previous interest earlier in the year, but also the fact that he used to work there under Marcelo Bielsa so will have existing connections to the hierarchy.

Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers have specified that they want to recruit a “head coach” rather than a permanent boss, and it’s stated that this could be a “hint” that they are going to take a second bite of the cherry for the Baggies man, with the Hawthorns club dealing with financial difficulties.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

West Brom were in serious danger of relegation themselves when Corberan was appointed, but having completely transformed the side to the point that they almost made the top six, retaining his services beyond the summer is an absolute no-brainer of a decision.

The Cheste native, whose preferred formation is a 4-2-3-1, has won 17, drawn five and lost 11 of his 33 games in charge so far whilst averaging 1.70 points per match, via Transfermarkt, which even though is a real mixed bag of results, is consistent enough to be challenging in the second tier.

Corberan, who was previously hailed “very talented” by Bielsa himself, also took Huddersfield Town to the Championship play-off final during his time at the John Smith’s Stadium so knows what it takes to compete and be successful at this level, and there’s no reason why he can’t be up there challenging again in 12 months time with a full term and new players under his belt.

Arsenal Make £17m Bid For "Intriguing" Gem

Arsenal have reportedly submitted a bid for Galatasaray right-back Sacha Boey as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season.

What’s the latest on Sacha Boey to Arsenal?

According to Turkish outlet Turkiye Gazetesi, Arsenal have submitted a bid in the region of €20m (£17m) for the defender, however, Galatasaray are demanding €25m (£21.5m) for one of their prized assets this summer.

According to the report, the Turkish side want to negotiate and get a deal done which matches their demands, with Arsenal ‘expected to accelerate’ in order to complete the move.

Brighton and Hove Albion are also keen on the 22-year-old, yet the lure of Champions League football next season at the Emirates will surely prove to be the main factor for Boey.

Could Sacha Boey be an upgrade on Takehiro Tomiyasu?

Ahead of Arsenal’s first foray in Europe’s premier club competition since 2016/17, Arteta will be keen to improve various areas of his squad, with the right-back area clearly one that needs to be bolstered.

Ben White was often shifted from his usual centre-back position to deputise on the right last season, whilst Takehiro Tomiyasu made 32 appearances, yet only 13 of those were starts – might Boey be an upgrade on the Japanese defender ahead of next term?

The Frenchman has underlined his importance to his team as they claimed their first league title since 2019 this season. He ranked 6th for overall rating across the whole squad (7.11), fourth for big chances created (seven), third for successful dribbles per game (1.1) and second for tackles per game (2.7), clearly playing a key role in Galatasaray’s title triumph.

Tomiyasu in comparison, ranked 18th in the Arsenal squad for overall rating (6.68), 15th for big chances created (one), 20th for successful dribbles per game (0.0) and sixth for tackles per game (1.3), clearly indicating that the 22-year-old would make for a much better option on the right side of Arteta’s defence next season.

Journalist Zach Lowy once described Boey as an “intriguing prospect” in 2021 before he made the move to Turkey, and it's fair to suggest that he has indeed developed into a well-rounded right-back, who can both defend and attack effectively, judging by his returns in the Galatasaray squad this term.

It’s evident that Arteta needs some major strength across his defence in order to sustain another Premier League title challenge in 2023/24 and luring Boey to the club for an aforementioned fee of £21.5m could prove to be a wise investment over the coming years.

Rangers Agree Terms To Sign "Brilliant" 30 y/o

Glasgow Rangers are close to signing Jack Butland, with the goalkeeper agreeing on personal terms at Ibrox, The Daily Mail report.

What’s the latest Jack Butland transfer news?

The Gers have endured a real rollercoaster of emotions when it comes to a move for Butland, with rumours of a move first emerging last month. The club were thought to be on the verge of signing the 30-year-old as their first summer addition on a free transfer, however, it appeared as if a transfer twist was in the pipeline in recent days.

Reports suggested that Manchester United, where Butland is currently on loan until the end of the season, were willing to blow Rangers out the water by doubling his salary ahead of a permanent move.

It was described as a potential "huge blow", as Michael Beale "believed he was close" to signing his "main target", hailed as "brilliant" by members of the media. However, it now looks as if a transfer is back on track, with another update coming to light.

According to The Daily Mail, the Nike-sponsored goalkeeper has shown a willingness to fit into the Ibrox wage structure and ‘has agreed a compromise on his personal terms’. A move is once again thought to be close, with the player eager to feature regularly at first team level.

Who else could Rangers sign this summer?

It appears as if Butland could be one of a number of English-based players through the door in Glasgow this summer. Deals have reportedly been agreed for Chelsea’s Dujon Sterling and Norwich City’s Kieran Dowell, with both players also set to become free agents over the coming weeks.

However, they may not be the last, with up to 10 new additions possibly on the cards. Rangers also seem willing to splash the cash if needed when it comes to new signings, with a move to sign Ecuador midfielder Jose Cifuentes appearing to be close. Arsenal defender Auston Trusty is another player the club could end up spending money on, with a move thought to be doable.

A number of Rangers players are out of contract at the end of the month, so it looks set to be an extremely busy summer ahead of Beale’s first season in charge.

Arsenal: Edu Trying To Stop "Exceptional" Gem From Leaving

Arsenal are "doing all they can" to stop prodigy Ethan Nwaneri from joining Premier League rivals Man City, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The north Londoners are attempting to back manager Mikel Arteta behind-the-scenes after what has been, overall, a very strong campaign – even if Arsenal end up missing out on their first league title in nearly 20 years.

City's incredible form has resulted in the Gunners playing catch up, with Arteta relying on a slip up from his former mentor if his side are to stand any chance of winning the league.

Regardless, just one year ago, Arsenal were pipped to a top four finish by arch rivals Tottenham – and now they're guaranteed the riches of Champions League football for next campaign in a major boost for the club.

Chelsea target Ethan Nwaneri

2023/2024 is a prime opportunity to build upon this season and challenge for honours, but as well as incomings, there have been reports of certain players potentially leaving the Emirates Stadium.

The likes of Kieran Tierney and Emile Smith Rowe have been mentioned in this regard, with highly promising starlet Nwaneri also attracting major interest.

According to Football Insider and reporter O'Rourke, City have been targeting the 16-year-old and are increasingly confident they can land him, but Arsenal are desperate to stop it.

Indeed, it is believed the club are "doing all they can" to prevent Nwaneri's departure to the Etihad Stadium, and while City think they can sign him, it is by no means a done deal.

As the youngster is yet to pen a professional deal, Arsenal would only be due a compensation package if he were to move up north.

Why Arsenal need to halt Nwaneri exit

Nwaneri is, arguably, the most exciting young and upcoming player Arsenal have in their ranks.

The midfielder has already broken a Premier League record, becoming the youngest player to ever make a top flight debut earlier this campaign at just 15 years and 181 days old.

The England Under-17 international has dazzled for Arsenal at youth level this season too – scoring six goals and four assists across appearances in Premier League 2, The Under-18s Premier League and FA Youth Cup (Transfermarkt).

Jack Wilshere has also heaped praise on Nwaneri, calling him an "exceptional talent", and losing him to one of Arsenal's biggest rivals will be a sore, sore blow for Arteta to take.

Man United Could "Unleash" £1.4k-p/w "Leader"

Manchester United saw their hopes of securing Champions League football next season dealt a significant blow following the loss to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson handing the hosts a deserved win at St James' Park.

A major issue for United boss Erik ten Hag following that "lifeless" defeat – as per Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst – is the midfield ranks, with the Dutchman failing to settle on a suitable partnership in the absence of the suspended Casemiro.

With Christian Eriksen also yet to return from injury, the former Ajax head coach opted for a trio of Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer for the trip to Tyneside, despite the fact that the Red Devils had "barely had a midfield" while utilising those same three players in the FA Cup win against Fulham, as per The Athletic's Adam Crafton.

With the only other senior option that of the polarising Fred – who has been branded "not good enough" by club legend Roy Keane – the Old Trafford outfit are rather limited in that department, hence the latest suggestion that a new 'number eight' could be a priority this summer.

Although such a statement signing is likely needed ahead of next season – amid apparent interest in both Frenkie de Jong and Jude Bellingham – in the short-term Ten Hag may need to look to the academy ranks to find a potential solution, with 18-year-old, Dan Gore, one standout candidate.

Who is Dan Gore?

A shot of life at senior level has yet to emerge for the teenager in his United career to date, although the midfield maestro does appear to be in the manager's thinking, having been called up to first-team training throughout the campaign.

The combative and composed ace – who notably irked Anthony Martial with a crunching, training ground challenge earlier in the season – has been hailed as "one of the most talented youngsters" in the club's academy set-up by talent scout Jacek Kulig, with that sign of the potential gem that Ten Hag has on his hands.

The England youth international was notably "superb" as part of the FA Youth Cup-winning side last term, according to MEN's Steven Railston, and has gone on to make "excellent progress" in the current campaign, notably registering two assists in 14 games for the U21s in Premier League 2.

Manchester United's Youth Cup winners

That fine run included a standout showing as captain in the recent draw with Arsenal in that latter competition, having been hailed as the "catalyst for creativity" in that 1-1 stalemate with the Gunners, as per Railston.

The £1.4k-per-week youngster's quality was also on show during the club's brief EFL Trophy run earlier in the campaign, with Gore averaging 1.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game from his three outings to illustrate his tenacious approach, while also averaging one successful dribble per game.

That ability both on and off the ball was only recently praised by youth coach Mark Dempsey, who hailed the young 'leader': "I think he’s a proper footballer, good with the ball, good without the ball, and he can travel with it. His final pass has to improve for me, that’s the last bit for him, but the rest is great.

"I like to see him play football because he’s one of them to get fans off their seats. He smashes into people, technically he’s fantastic and he’s been terrific all season. He’s been captain a number of times and personality-wise, he’s a quiet boy, but he’s a leader.

"He leads by example. He’s a local lad, he loves the football club and you see that in the way he plays. Whether he’s playing at Old Trafford, a three-a-side at Carrington or at The Cliff, it’s the same performance from the kid and we’ve all got a lot of time for Daniel."

Such traits will likely go down well with both United supporters and with Ten Hag, with Gore's all-round attributes potentially making him a dream candidate to fix the club's current midfield woes.

Leeds Supporters Trust not happy at fixture changes

Leeds United Supporters Trust have shared their frustration at an off-field fixture update for the Whites.

The Lowdown: Two fixtures changed

The Whites secured a crucial Premier League victory on Saturday afternoon at Wolves, with Javi Gracia’s side winning 4-2 at Molineux. The result took Leeds up into 14th place and two points clear of safety after beginning the day in 19th position.

There was an off-field update prior to the game at Wolves, though, which has an impact on the club’s fixtures with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth in April. Leeds’ home meeting with Palace has been moved back to Sunday 9th April with a 2pm kick-off, while the trip to Bournemouth is now scheduled for Sunday 30th April with another 2pm kick-off.

The Latest: Supporters Trust fume

Leeds United Supporters Trust were quick to react to the news on Twitter after the club shared the update on their official website on Saturday morning, describing the change to the Bournemouth game particularly as ‘madness’.

‘What on earth is the rationale for moving the Bournemouth game to a different day when it’s not on TV? Madness when travel is already booked for so many! Football is for fans blah blah blah blah!’

The Verdict: Huge month

Of course, this update isn’t ideal for supporters who have already made travel plans for those games, with short notice for the Elland Road clash against Palace specifically.

These fixtures could be key in regards to Leeds’ Premier League status, though, with both Palace and Bournemouth battling at the bottom with the Whites. Two wins would be massive as the club look to avoid the drop, with Gracia’s side facing Arsenal after the return from the international break. A home meeting with Nottingham Forest follows before entertaining Palace, with Leeds looking to continue the feel-good factor under the Spaniard.

West Ham: Gianluca Scamacca may leave

West Ham summer signing Gianluca Scamacca has been linked with an exit as reports from Italy make a surprise claim.

The Lowdown: Hammers player exodus?

Members of the Irons squad have been linked with potential moves away this summer.

The most obvious of these names is midfield sensation Declan Rice, who has been attracting serious interest from Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, the agent of West Ham forward and current Torino loanee Nikola Vlasic has reportedly explained that the Croatia international would like to remain in Serie A.

The Latest: Scamacca eyeing West Ham exit…

Now, Italian news website PLANETAMILAN.it have shared an update involving Scamacca, as the 24-year-old allegedly ‘wants to return’ to play in Serie A.

Indeed, the striker has found it difficult to fully break into manager David Moyes’ starting eleven and is now eyeing a summer exit.

However, as AC Milan take an interest, West Ham won’t let him go for cheap – with this report claiming they will demand around £44 million for his services.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-6/” title=”West Ham latest news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/cropped-david-moyes-premier-league-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Pinch of salt?

Just half way through his first season at West Ham, Scamacca is currently still finding his feet again after an injury lay-off and it could take more time for him to adapt life in the Premier League.

The Italy international suffered a knee problem mid-way through January, just after he scored in West Ham’s 2-2 draw away to Leeds, and it’s been difficult for him to fight his way back into Moyes’ eleven since.

That being said, Scamacca has netted seven goals in all competitions this season, and a hot streak of form towards the end of this campaign could seriously bring up those numbers.

Called a ‘quality’ player by members of the media, we believe the former Sassuolo star still has plenty to prove in claret and blue.

West Ham could reignite Vladimir Coufal

West Ham United’s squad have worked miracles in recent seasons, having defied the odds and upset the natural order of the Premier League by twice qualifying for Europe and nearly going all the way last year.

However, as was outlined in David Moyes’ desperate attempt to rebuild over the summer, this is an ageing squad. They could not continue at this level forever.

As such, they have started to feel the effects in the form of increasingly poor displays, slumping into a relegation battle.

They boast a number of top-quality players, but they all seem to be both wildly out of sorts and out of form at the worst possible time. Players who had been integral in their prior successes are way past their best, whilst their replacements are seemingly not up to scratch either.

It was therefore likely a much-needed break from that misery to see someone like Vladimir Coufal, who nearly left the club in January, star at the weekend. The transfer window was relatively quiet, with the opening stages dominated by a proposed £6m exit that never came to be.

Travelling to St James’ Park has fast become one of the toughest trips the Premier League can throw up, with a high-flying Newcastle United in imperious form.

So, to see the struggling Hammers hold their own was a welcome sight.

The Czech Republic defender earned his 7.4 rating, in which he silenced the tricky Allan Saint-Maximin by making five tackles, three interceptions and three clearances, as per via Sofascore.

It saw a return to basics for the 30-year-old who has now seen his last four displays rated at 7.0 or higher.

Not only was his defensive work lauded, but his usual tireless attitude that had first endeared him to the fans saw a return – journalist Toby Cudworth picked up on this, as he noted he was “running himself ragged”.

This return to form comes at the perfect time for Moyes, who is in desperate need of his experienced heads to start performing again.

Whilst expecting him to recapture the seven-assist heroics of his debut season is unlikely, at the very least the Scotsman could hope to reignite him defensively and lock down his flank.

Should Coufal continue in this way, it will make the potential fee they could have received for him obsolete. His involvement in avoiding the drop could prove priceless.
