Australia-SA match abandoned after relentless rain in Rawalpindi

Match abandoned due to rainThe much-anticipated Champions Trophy match between Australia and South Africa in Rawalpindi was washed out without even a toss, forget a ball being bowled, after persistent drizzle. The match was called off at 5.10pm local time, three hours and ten minutes after the scheduled start of play at 2pm and two hours and 22 minutes before the cut-off time for a 20-overs-a-side game, 7.32pm local time. This was due to be the teams’ first meeting at a Champions Trophy. The result means that if Australia and South Africa win their final group matches, against Afghanistan and England respectively, they will progress to the semi-finals. Wednesday’s match between Afghanistan and England is a knockout, with the loser certain of exiting the competition. The winner will have to beat their next opposition to make it through to the final four. As a result, one of the matches between Australia and Afghanistan on Friday and South Africa and England on Saturday could be a virtual quarter-final. Both Afghanistan and England have to win both their matches to qualify for the semi-finals.With no XIs named for this encounter, South Africa kept their cards close to their chest on Heinrich Klaasen’s availability. He missed their opening match against Afghanistan with an elbow injury and now has three more days to recover before the game against England on Saturday. This was due to be the first meeting between Australia and South Africa since the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final, which Australia won, and means that they continue to have the advantage over South Africa in ICC events. In nine matches, Australia have won four, South Africa three, there was a tie at the 1999 World Cup and now, their first washout.

Arsenal's mind games aren't working! Ruben Dias insists he 'doesn't care' about Man City's new rivalry with Gunners as Pep Guardiola's side look to avenge 5-1 loss at Emirates Stadium

Manchester City star Ruben Dias insisted that he does not care about the newly formed rivalry with Arsenal as the Portuguese defender seeks revenge of the 5-1 loss against the Gunners at Emirates Stadium from last season. Mikel Arteta's side have enjoyed a much superior record against Guardiola's men in recent times as they are unbeaten in their last five head-to-head meetings.

Arsenal and Man City's new formed rivalry

Before Liverpool lifted the Premier League title in the 2024-25 campaign for a record-equalling 20th time, City and Arsenal dominated the title race in back-to-back seasons, and on both occasions, Guardiola's side emerged triumphant. However, when it comes to the two clubs' head-to-head meetings in recent years, it is the Gunners who have reigned supreme, including the 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium and the 5-1 humbling at Emirates last season.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport"I don't really care about them"

Ahead of the big-ticket encounter in the Premier League, Dias sent out a fiery message as he told reporters: "To be honest, I don't really care about them. I just care about us. All I have to say is what I know from our side. We play games to win for ourselves. For our families, our people. If other people want to play games because of rivalries or whatever feeds them, then go ahead. Be what you want to be.

"We believe in what we do. And we do it for ourselves, our families, our loved ones, our fans and our club. That's the way to be – and that's how you pull off what we pulled off. That's what we believe in – and nothing is bigger in our minds than knowing we have to be the best version of ourselves. It doesn't matter who we are playing against."

He added: "I wouldn't say it's that we have something to prove, it's more that we want to win. We are very aware of what happened last season, and I feel like, in a way, that's a good fear. You know what I mean? Realising some situations where we were, and now being in this position and starting over, knowing everything we need to do not to get ourselves in those positions again."

Man City boosted after derby win

City started their campaign with a 4-0 win over Wolves but then lost their next games against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton and were languishing at the bottom half of the league table before the international break. However, after a morale-boosting 3-0 win over Manchester United and then a victory over Italian champions Napoli in the Champions League, Guardiola's side are up and running.

Liverpool now willing to sell £50m+ star as he demands same wages as Wirtz

After signing Florian Wirtz for a British-record £116m on a contract worth £200,000-a-week, Liverpool are now reportedly willing to sell one of their star men after he demanded to match that salary.

Liverpool unveil Florian Wirtz

Not many gave Liverpool a chance when rumours initially emerged that they were battling Bayern Munich and Manchester City for Wirtz’s signature, but the German’s mind was soon made up and football’s latest open secret quickly stole the headlines. With a Premier League winners’ medal around his neck following his first season at Anfield, Arne Slot now arguably has the best No.10 that European football has to offer at his disposal.

Wirtz didn’t come cheap, but talents of his calibre rarely do in today’s market and that record price-tag will quickly become worth it if he replicates his Bayer Leverkusen numbers during his time at Anfield.

It’s no surprise that Liverpool decided to make their new signing one of their highest earners, either, with reports suggesting that he’ll earn around £200,000-a-week in Merseyside – a salary that only Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk better on the Reds’ wage bill.

After putting pen to paper, Wirtz explained his move – telling Liverpool’s official media channels: “I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and of course I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world, and in my opinion Liverpool was one of them.”

Despite spending big money on their new signing, however, it seems as though Liverpool are not prepared to do the same to keep hold of one of their star defenders this summer.

Liverpool now willing to sell Konate

According to Caught Offside, Richard Hughes and Liverpool are now willing to sell Ibrahima Konate this summer for around €60m (£51m) after he demanded a wage increase to £200,000-a-week at Anfield.

With just one year remaining on the Frenchman’s current deal too, the Reds are desperate to avoid a repeat of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit as a free agent and have reportedly set a contract deadline until the end of the summer.

What only adds fuel to the fire of Konate’s current position are reports that Liverpool are now looking to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer. Whilst, as things stand, it seems as though the Palace man would be replacing the Leverkusen-bound Jarrel Quansah, there’s no doubt that the Reds will be well aware that he could also solve their Konate problem.

Whether Guehi can truly match Konate’s quality will be the big question if the move happens. It would certainly be a bold move by all those involved at Anfield.

Approach made: Leeds now enquire over deal for "pure class" £5m defender

Leeds United have now made an approach to sign a defender who’s “pure class”, and he could be available for a fee of just £5m, according to reporter Ben Jacobs.

Leeds eyeing new defender amid Firpo uncertainty

Junior Firpo played a key role in the Whites’ promotion, collecting four goals and ten assists in 32 Championship games, but the left-back could now be heading for the exit door, amid widespread links with La Liga side Real Betis.

While Firpo is capable of making a real impact from an attacking point of view, former Leeds man Paul Robinson believes it may be the right decision to let the defender leave this summer, given his previous struggles in the top flight.

Robinson said: “Firpo, I’ve got my concerns about. I think he’s been excellent in the Championship. But some players, the Championship is their level, and in the Premiership, before he was exposed defensively, he was well out of position many times, susceptible to goals, and teams targeted him, and I think the step-up was maybe too much for him.”

Leeds United's JuniorFirpoin action with Bristol City's Max Bird

In the Premier League, Daniel Farke’s side may have to be a bit more pragmatic than they were last season, which means the manager is looking to bring in a new left-back, who is defensively solid, rather than a threat going forward.

According to Jacobs, in an update on X, Leeds have now made an approach to sign Aston Villa’s Alex Moreno, submitting an enquiry about a deal for the left-back, who is also attracting interest from Burnley and a number of unnamed La Liga clubs.

With Moreno’s Villa contract set to expire in 2026, he is set to be available for around £5m this summer, making him an affordable option for the Championship title-winners.

2 ByDominic Lund Jun 11, 2025 "Pure class" Moreno impressed during Nottingham Forest loan

Having been deemed surplus to requirements by Unai Emery, the defender was shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest last season, and the Spaniard managed to impress at times, with writer Lee Clarke describing his performances as “pure class”.

Clarke also added: “I confess I was uncertain about his hamstring history when he signed but there have been no ill effects in that sense so far. Moreno is established on the left in the team now and he’s a 7/10 at the very least in every single game.”

Alex Moreno for Nottingham Forest.

That said, the 32-year-old, who has the same agent as Illan Meslier, went on to play less of a prominent role as the season went on, often being left on the bench by Nuno, which suggests he was unable to maintain his initial levels of performance.

As such, there are doubts over whether Moreno would be a worthwhile signing for Leeds, but he could be an upgrade on Firpo from a defensive standpoint, having outperformed the left-back across some key metrics over the past year.

Man Utd flop who should be "fourth choice" has been even worse than Onana

Manchester United have had a dismal season, irrespective of what happens on Wednesday night, as they are on course to finish closer to the bottom three than the top five in the Premier League.

The Red Devils, who face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final this week, will not be playing European football next term if they fail to beat Spurs.

It is fair to say that recruitment has been a big problem for United in recent seasons, with too many flops and not enough hits, and Andre Onana is one example of that.

Why Andre Onana has been a flop for Manchester United

The Premier League giants reportedly paid a fee of £47.2m to sign the Cameroon international from Dutch side Ajax in the summer of 2023 to replace club legend David De Gea.

Manchester United'sAndreOnana

Unfortunately, Onana, who made his 100th appearance for the club in the defeat to Chelsea, has been far too error-prone between the sticks for the Red Devils over the past two seasons, as illustrated by the statistic below.

The 29-year-old dud has prevented 3.34 goals, based on the xG against him, which shows that he has performed fairly well as a shot-stopper overall in the Premier League, but the errors have let him down.

United cannot rely on their number one goalkeeper week-in-week-out because of how many errors he has made that have directly led to goals, which is why he has been a flop for the Red Devils.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Onana, however, was not even the worst signing that was made in the summer of 2023, as centre-forward Rasmus Hojlund was an even worse piece of business.

Why Hojlund was a worse signing than Onana

Ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, Manchester United decided to splash the cash on a new number nine, signing the Danish attacker from Atalanta for a mammoth £72m transfer fee.

The 22-year-old centre-forward has yet to live up to his huge price tag, though, with just 14 Premier League goals to his name since the start of last season.

Hojlund, who was described as “anxious” to score by Ruben Amorim, has not done enough to get himself in high-quality scoring positions on a regular basis, as shown by the incredible statistic including Harry Maguire above.

As you can see in the table above, the Denmark international has accrued less than 13 xG in 61 Premier League appearances as a centre-forward for United and has regularly been dominated by opposition defenders in physical duels.

Earlier this week, Manchester United legend Roy Keane criticised the attacker’s position in the squad, suggesting that he should be way further down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

The former Ireland international said: “Hojlund, in his defence, I think should have been a back-up striker. Third or fourth choice, and learn his trade off some brilliant strikers. He is not good enough.”

His poor statistics in a United shirt in the Premier League suggest that the criticism is fair, but the club also paid a significant amount of money for him, and he has failed to deliver.

Onana has, at least, been the first-choice goalkeeper and been a net-positive with his xG prevented, despite the errors, and cost £24.8m less than the striker, which is why Hojlund has been an even worse signing for the club with his struggles at the top end of the pitch.

Idah upgrade: Celtic had a perfect Kyogo replacement & sold him for £400k

Celtic’s dream of winning the domestic treble this season is still alive after they hammered St. Johnstone 5-0 at Hampden Park in the semi-finals of the SFA Cup.

The Hoops already won the League Cup earlier this season, and they are a win away from sealing the Scottish Premiership title, which means that the SFA Cup is the last trophy that they need to clinch to seal the treble.

Brendan Rodgers was unable to win all three domestic competitions in his first season back at Parkhead, as his team lost to Kilmarnock in the early stages of the League Cup in August 2023.

The Hoops are well on course to enjoy a perfect domestic campaign this time, however, after a fantastic performance and result against the Saints on Sunday.

Two goals from Daizen Maeda and strikes from Adam Idah, Jota, and Callum McGregor sealed the win for the Scottish giants, with four of the goals scored in the first half.

Idah was given the nod in the centre-forward position despite enduring a fairly difficult first full season at Parkhead since joining on a permanent deal last summer.

Adam Idah's Celtic struggles this season

The Ireland international scored eight goals in 15 Premiership games and scored a last-minute winner against Rangers in the SFA Cup final during his loan spell in the second half of last season.

His impressive displays during that loan spell led to Celtic making the decision to pay a reported fee of £8.5m to Norwich City to sign him permanently, with add-ons that could take the deal to £9.5m.

It was a huge amount of money to spend on the striker, when you consider that Odsonne Edouard was the most-expensive striker signing in the club’s history at £9m prior to that deal, and he has yet to justify the price tag with his performances this term.

Idah has only started 16 of his 30 appearances in the Premiership this season, scoring eight goals, as Maeda has been preferred ahead of him in the number nine role more often than not since Kyogo Furuhashi’s move to Rennes in January.

The former Canaries marksman had a chance to step up as the first-choice centre-forward after the Japan international moved on from Parkhead at the start of the year, but he has failed to take that opportunity.

As you can see in the table above, Idah has underperformed against his xG by almost three goals and missed a whopping 13 ‘big chances’ in 16 starts in the league.

These statistics show that the £8.5m signing has been wasteful with the chances that have come his way in the Premiership, which is why he has yet to justify the money spent on his services so far.

Kyogo, who cost the club a reported £4.6m from Vissel Kobe, scored 63 goals in 116 Premiership games for the club and Idah is yet to prove that he can deliver that kind of quality or consistency for the Hoops in the final third.

Of course, the Ireland international only turned 24 in February and still has time left ahead of him to develop and improve, but the club may have hoped for more instant success on the pitch for the money that was spent on him.

Idah’s struggles since joining for a deal that could rise to £9.5m may be particularly frustrating when there is a former Celtic forward out there who could have been an upgrade on him, and a perfect replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi.

Celtic sold their perfect Kyogo replacement for £400k

Attacking midfielder Lewis Morgan joined the Hoops from St Mirren at the start of 2018 and went on to score just two goals in 31 first-team appearances for the club.

The versatile attacker also had loan spells with St Mirren and Sunderland during his time with Celtic, before being sold to Inter Miami for a reported fee of £400k at the start of 2020. Before Lionel Messi, they had Lewis Morgan.

He produced seven goals and seven assists in 58 matches for Inter Miami, a respectable return for a player who played in midfield or on the wing, before being sold to New York Red Bulls at the end of 2021.

Since his move to the Big Apple, Morgan has mainly been deployed as a centre-forward in what has been a big positional shift in his career, from being a midfielder by trade to leading the line in the MLS.

His performances for New York Red Bulls in comparison to his form for Inter Miami and Celtic suggests that he should have been playing as a striker earlier on in his career.

Morgan missed 31 matches in the 2023 MLS season, due to a hip injury, but excelled at the top end of the pitch in the 2022 and 2024 campaigns either side of those injury woes.

As you can see in the table above, Morgan scored 28 goals and only missed 11 ‘big chances’ in those two seasons combined, whilst Idah has missed 13 ‘big chances’ and only scored eight goals in the current Premiership this season.

This suggests that the Scottish attacker is more clinical, and more creative with his 20 ‘big chances’ created, than the Irish marksman, and that he could be an upgrade on him in the present day.

Morgan did not get the chance to showcase his quality as a striker during his time at Parkhead, which is something that the coaches may look back on with regret, as his form since playing that role suggests that he could have been the ideal long-term replacement for Kyogo.

Like the Japanese forward, the right-footed ace does not have a traditional number nine build, standing at 5 foot 10, but he has the mobility, the movement, and the quality on the ball to make things happen, as shown by his form in America with a regular stream of goals when fit.

Celtic have hit the jackpot with this star who is now worth more than Jota.

ByDan Emery Apr 21, 2025

Therefore, Celtic accidentally binned their perfect replacement for Kyogo for just £400k because they did not see the potential for him to play as a centre-forward, and they now have an £8.5m signing who has yet to prove himself on the pitch in that role.

Ticket prices back in spotlight as England seal series in front of empty seats

Poor sales for Sunday’s decisive fourth day at Lord’s as fans begin to vote with their feet

Matt Roller01-Sep-2024It should have been a crowning moment on this sun-soaked Sunday afternoon in north-west London. Olly Stone backpedalled from mid-on to settle underneath a catch off Chris Woakes’ bowling, clinching England’s fifth consecutive Test win and their second series win of the summer. And yet, England’s players celebrated this 190-run victory over Sri Lanka in front of a swathe of empty seats. This was not a sign of Test cricket’s decline, but a retort from fans to the administrators who have spent years taking them for granted: with a starting price of £95, thousands upon thousands of tickets for the fourth day of the Lord’s Test went unsold.”It was kind of weird,” said Ollie Pope, England’s stand-in captain. “A few of us have been strolling in each day, and we were like, ‘Jeez, it seems quiet today.’ I’m not sure if people expected the game to be done by day four or what… It’s a shame it wasn’t a full house: it was obviously a good day’s play where we had to work hard for those eight wickets.”Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) were braced for a low crowd and estimated that around 9,000 people turned up to a venue that holds more than 30,000. The club committed to a review of fourth-day pricing while chief executive Guy Lavender cited England’s dominant win against West Indies at Lord’s in July – which took barely seven sessions – as a contributing factor. It is a paradox of Bazball: by accelerating the pace of Test matches, as part of a bid to make the format as attractive to fans as they can, England have inadvertently dented ticket sales for the fourth and fifth days. Twice in five Tests this summer, they have completed victory by mid-afternoon on the third day; the other three have all finished on the fourth day. And, on the rare occasions in the Bazball era when matches have gone to day five, the gates have invariably been thrown open for free, albeit with an enthusiastic take-up. This was most famously the case at Trent Bridge in 2022, when a final-day full house roared Jonny Bairstow to a heady, agenda-settting hundred against New Zealand.Related

Pope suggested that the low turnout might owe to the “heavy schedule” this summer “with the Hundred, T20 Blast and a lot of Test matches as well”. Asked if England need more support from administrators, he said: “It’s not really for me to comment on… [but] it is great to have as many kids and families in as possible, and learning to love the game.”No matter England’s stated aims, the vagaries of the format can still leave fans short-changed. “We pride ourselves on wanting people to come into the ground and feel like they’ve had a really enjoyable day of cricket,” Joe Root said on Saturday – shortly after Pope had declined to bowl spinners in tandem under floodlights, thereby bringing the third day to a premature close.Lavender defended MCC’s reluctance to cut prices at short notice in a statement issued on Saturday. “It is difficult to dynamically discount tickets in hindsight when thousands of supporters have applied through our 2023 ballot process and paid the full price…” he said. “We will be paying particular attention to the structure of fourth-day tickets in our pricing reviews, given the way that Test cricket is now being played.”Even MCC’s attempts to make amends ended up backfiring. Prices were cut to £15 for adults and £5 for Under-16s from 3.45pm, but the discount was not advertised to the public ahead of time. As a result, there was no notable change in the size of the crowd in the final session. The club often make pronouncements about their concern for Test cricket’s future, most recently at president Mark Nicholas’ inaugural ‘World Cricket Connects’ forum. Yet by selling tickets for such extortionate sums – the empty seats in the top tier of the Grand Stand on Sunday were priced at £140 each – MCC are directly contributing to the sense of a format in decline. It is not as if MCC is desperate for money. The club reported a pre-tax operating surplus of £8.8 million last year, and will imminently be given a 51% stake in London Spirit by the ECB with an estimated value in the region of £60 million. Regardless, lower ticket prices may have ended up bringing in more revenue through fans’ matchday spending around Lord’s.Two weeks ago, Lord’s staged the Hundred final in front of crowds of 22,009 (women’s) and 28,860 (men’s) – both significantly more than watched England complete their win on Sunday. But it would be disingenuous to suggest the difference is a reflection of supporters’ preference: tickets for the Hundred were priced at barely one-third of those for the fourth day of the Test.Test cricket remains hugely popular in England: Sunday’s low turnout was something of an anomaly in a summer of strong ticket sales, despite low-ranked opponents in West Indies and Sri Lanka. When India arrive for a five-match series next summer, tickets will sell out even at premium prices. This is not a unique problem to Lord’s: there were empty seats in the Party Stand throughout the first Test in Manchester last week, and there are plenty of fourth-day tickets still available at The Oval for the third Test. But Sunday’s no-show should send a clear message: if fans feel they are being ripped off, they will vote with their feet.
