Liverpool Transfer News: Doucoure Alternative Revealed

In an ideal world, Jurgen Klopp would have completed his midfield rebuild at Liverpool by the time that the third weekend of the Premier League season rolls around. We are not in that world, however, with the German still seeking another reinforcement after a turbulent summer of business.

Things seemed to be going to plan when they welcomed both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho soon set plans off-course, before the Reds' failure to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia summed things up.

Now, the Premier League giants have reportedly turned their attention towards an alternative to £70m Cheick Doucoure.

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

After finally welcoming a defensive midfielder in the form of Wataru Endo, Liverpool reportedly shifted their focus towards Crystal Palace's Doucoure, who the Eagles value at a reported £70m.

Upon discovering the midfielder's price-tag, however, the Reds have deemed Doucoure too expensive, and have therefore, quickly turned their attention elswhere once more.

With just under a week to go until the summer transfer window slams shut, though, Liverpool must move fast if they are to complete their rebuild in the middle of the park. Those at Anfield have, at the very least, now found an instant alternative for Doucoure.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Liverpool could turn their focus back to Bayern Munich's £30m-rated midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, with the Bavarians now reportedly more willing to sell the Dutchman this summer.

The Merseyside club may have to act fast if they are to secure the former Ajax man's signature, however, with Manchester United also long-term admirers of Gravenberch. Erik ten Hag, of course, worked with the player when at Ajax.

Should Liverpool sign Ryan Gravenberch?

Liverpool's need for another midfielder is no secret, and welcoming a 21-year-old Bayern Munich man, who could cost as little as £30m would represent a solid piece of business for the Reds.

Whilst things haven't worked out at the Bundesliga champions – making just three starts in the league last season – Gravenberch has shown enough potential to push on elsewhere and succeed.

At his best, the Dutchman has earned plenty of praise, including from former Ajax youth coach Brian Tevreden, who told Goal: “Physically, I see Frank in him from back in the day because he’s tall and very strong. But technically, I would say he’s a better version of Pogba in his best days at Juventus, in terms of his technique and his presence on the pitch.

“He’s very dominant like Pogba was, and that’s what I see in Ryan.”

Meanwhile, former Ajax forward Wim Kieft once had nothing but praise to say, writing in De Telegraaf, via Liverpool Echo: "He is the greatest talent in the Netherlands.

"Only 18-years-old, but the prototype of a complete player. You see him grow every week.

“If someone like this makes his debut at the highest level, the big question is whether he can keep up with the faster pace. Gravenberch picks up on that very quickly. Also in the Champions League. When you see how, despite his height and physically, he easily turns away in the crowds and accelerates, you don’t see that much.”

Gravenberch may well be Liverpool's ideal solution to their midfield problem.

Liverpool Now Unlikely To Sign "Magnificent" Midfielder Before Deadline

Liverpool's need for midfield reinforcements in no secret, even after they overcame the odds to defeat Newcastle United at St James' Park and extend their unbeaten run to start the season to three Premier League games.

The Reds were, of course, on their way to a fairly successful transfer window, with the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia threw a spanner in the works.

Since then, they have welcomed Wataru Endo, but it could be argued that a more high-profile name is still needed.

With that said, though, the club have reportedly ruled out signing one particular midfielder.

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

As the summer transfer window edges closer and closer to slamming shut, Liverpool are scrambling for the extra reinforcements needed to ensure that Jurgen Klopp has a side capable of returning to the Premier League's top four, after missing out last season.

The name at the forefront of their current list of targets seems to be Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch, who the Bavarians could reportedly soften their stance on in the coming days.

As Gravenberch rises to the top of Liverpool's list, however, it is Sofyan Amrabat who has reportedly been ruled out altogether.

According to Manchester Evening News, who were reporting on Manchester United and Liverpool's interest in Amrabat, the Reds have clarified that they will not be making a move for the Fiorentina man this summer.

This news comes at a time when Amrabat has been frozen out at the Serie A club, with La Viola dropping the Morroco international from both first-team games, and training until his future is resolved, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Should Liverpool sign Sofyan Amrabat?

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Liverpool's stance on Amrabat is a surprising one, given their need for midfielders, and Fiorentina's reported price-tag of just €30m (£25.6m) this summer.

Statistically speaking, too, the Moroccan would be an upgrade on the options that Klopp waved goodbye to this summer.

According to FBref, Amrabat outperformed Henderson in some key areas throughout the previous campaign.

Meanwhile, the 27-year-old earned plenty of praise during the 2022 World Cup, as he helped Morroco to reach the semi-final stage, in the surprise of the tournament.

Alan Shearer praised the midfielder, saying on BBC's Match of The Day, via the Liverpool Echo: "He gets it and then he can feed the ball in, and you can see him go back there. He’ll be reluctant to get forward as he wants to protect, he’ll want to do that.

"He really enjoys that and he’s really good at that – ‘get off the ball, I’m having it’ – and he’s setting his team forward. He’s been key. He does that, he protects, he can get out there and help his full-backs, and that’s what he’s in that role to do – to stop, and be a spoiler – he’s excellent at it. Then he drives forward and they’re on their way. He’s been magnificent, he really has."

Nonetheless, despite the praise and the stats, Liverpool reportedly remain unlikely to push ahead for Amrabat's signature this summer.

Burnley Could Sign £15m ‘Diamond’ As Benson Partner

Last season, Burnley cantered to the Championship title.

Vincent Kompany’s irrepressible Clarets won the most games (29), scored the most goals (87), and had the best goal difference (+52) in the division.

However, as has been the case in elite second-tier sides, the team starred many on-loan top-flight stars. Ian Maatsen and Taylor-Harwood Bellis featured heavily in defence, but the most awe-inspiring asset was Nathan Tella, who has been linked with a return to Turf Moor.

What’s the latest Burnley transfer news?

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton could lose the attacker amid interest from Burnley and Bayer Leverkusen.

The outlet details that the Saints have already ‘rejected bids’ from the newly-promoted side and the German outfit view Tella as a replacement for Moussa Diaby, who recently joined Aston Villa.

It was previously reported that he could be available for around £15m.

What does Nathan Tella offer?

The 24-year-old made his senior debut for Southampton back in June 2020 but had never forged any notable impact or consistency.

Prior to his loan move last summer, Tella started just 22 times for the south-coast club in three years across all competitions and subsequently joined Burnley in search of regular minutes.

Up north, the Englishman enjoyed a stirring breakout season with 22 goal contributions in 31 Championship starts.

This astonishing form included two separate hat tricks – the second of which was against Hull City in a 3-1 victory, with opposition manager Liam Rosenior describing the forward as “outstanding.”

Nathan-Tella-Burnley

Kompany echoed this sentiment, lauding the accomplished nature of Tella’s play, saying: "I still call him a raw diamond. He has goalscoring ability but many with that ability don't put the work in for the team but he does. He has all the tools and helps us in so many ways, not just goalscoring."

The retired defender has done a tremendous job to remodel Burnley’s style of play into an aesthetically pleasing attacking unit, which was channelled through the brilliant Tella.

As a result, the Lambeth-born frontman was named in the EFL Team of the Season and it seems almost unfair that he finds himself back in the second tier with a relegated side following his imperious promotion-driven consistency.

Therefore, it is obvious why Burnley still retains such serious interest in the former Arsenal academy graduate.

Last campaign, alongside Tella, Manuel Benson was another player who tremendously excelled in a first-ever year of Championship football.

In 14 starts, the Belgian notched 12 goals and created three assists, including the winner against Blackburn Rovers in a 1-0 victory that clinched their promotion back to the top flight.

Benson combined this magnificent productivity with eye-catching creativity as he ranks within the top 18% outside of Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for successful take-ons per 90, as well as the best 1% and progressive carries per 90.

Last term, Benson and Tella were two of the club’s most scintillating assets, and due to the latter’s staggering versatility, in which he appeared across the frontline last term, they could reunite behind the striker to steer the club away from relegation.

They combined phenomenally well last season and although now a step up presents a new challenge, they could come together to transform each other's games.

The club’s 3-0 defeat on the opening day against a clinical Manchester City indicated that is going to be a gruelling season and the addition of the effervescent Tella could be transformative not only in their fortunes, but Benson's.

Team-mates in awe as Smith matches Sobers to 6000 runs

Steven Smith became the equal-second fastest Test batsman to 6000 runs, and now has the chance to make his fourth century of this Ashes series

Daniel Brettig at Sydney05-Jan-2018Australia’s captain Steven Smith has left his team-mates in awe after becoming the equal-second fastest batsman to 6000 runs in Tests behind Sir Donald Bradman and alongside Sir Garfield Sobers, and now has the chance to make his fourth century of this Ashes series – another achievement that would place him in Bradman territory.”It’s pretty crazy, I think at one stage they put up all those numbers on the board for biggest Ashes series by an Australian player and I think he might’ve been six or seven on the list but he’s batted two or three times less than some of those guys at the top,” Pat Cummins said. “Those big innings he’s played as well, they’ve all been really important. In Brisbane and Perth they were match-winning and in Melbourne it was match-saving, so it’s just incredible and I think he’s been the real difference between the two sides.””As bowlers we’re stoked he’s on our team so we don’t have to bowl at him. It’s crazy, he prepares the way most other guys do, sit down, get the gear on and watching the game, but he just goes out there and from ball one he looks like he’s been batting for three hours already. No obvious weakness, no obvious time it takes him to build into his innings, he just looks from ball one like he knows his game so well, so confident and in great touch. It’s great, you lose a couple of wickets but he walks to the crease.”Cummins said that when bowling to Smith in the nets he created unique problems for bowlers with his pre-delivery movements opening up different parts of the field. “He’s very different to pretty much every other batsman,” Cummins said of Smith. “He moves so much so it’s harder to find your target. A normal, fourth-stump ball to anyone else he can hit to the leg side as though it’s a leg-stump ball, then the next one you might bowl the same ball and he doesn’t move as far and hits a full-blooded cover drive.”So I think he’s just a really hard batter to get a rhythm to, and I think the best batsmen in the world are always the most proactive, they find a way to get off strike, find a way to not let you settle in as a bowler, and I think that’s what he’s done. He’s a seriously smart batsman, he knows what he’s doing and how to have one over the bowler.”England’s debutant legspinner Mason Crane said the visitors had to keep reminding themselves that Smith was a batsman with flaws and the capability for mistakes like everyone else. “He’s played really well and scored a lot of runs but he’s only human as well,” Crane said. “It’s awesome to be bowling to some of the best players in the world, that’s why I play the game.”He’s got out I think four times this series so he’s not [immune]. He’s playing very well, obviously seeing it well, but like I said he’s only human, so we’ll keep plugging away. He’s a key player for them, I feel like if we can get him out and take two or three then we can hopefully get a first-innings lead.”

West Brom Now Eyeing Move For 23 y/o Defender

West Bromwich Albion are now eyeing a move for Reading left-back Nesta Guinness-Walker, with a new report revealing they could stand a good chance of signing him…

What's the latest West Brom transfer news?

With less than two weeks remaining of the summer transfer window, Carlos Corberan is still keen on bringing in new reinforcements, particularly in defence, with Football Insider reporting West Brom are keen on Millwall defender Jake Cooper.

As the 28-year-old is now entering the final year of his contract with the Championship outfit, a number of clubs are hoping to land him for a cut-price fee, with Leeds Untied and Rangers also being named as potential suitors.

Financial constraints have hindered the Baggies' ability to bring in the players they would have liked, but they could also make a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien, who will now be allowed to go on loan to the Championship.

However, Corberan's main priority appears to be strengthening his defence, and West Brom are now eyeing a move for Reading left-back Guinness-Walker, amid a financial crisis at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, according to a report from Football Insider.

The Royals have informed senior players, including the left-back, that they may be sold to raise funds, and the Baggies are ready to seize the opportunity to take him to the Hawthorns.

With Reading desperately trying to balance the books, Corberan has been presented with the perfect opportunity to bring in a new defender, however there may be competition for his signature.

Blackburn Rovers are also credited with an interest in the 23-year-old, with Jon Dahl Tomasson looking to add some late signings to his squad before the deadline on September 1st, so West Brom will have to see off competition from their Championship rivals.

Who is Nesta Guinness-Walker?

Born in Twickenham, the Englishman made his first professional appearance for Metropolitan Police in the FA Cup, before going on to earn a move to AFC Wimbledon, who were in League 1 at the time, making a total of 97 appearances for the Dons.

The former Wimbledon man has managed to work his way up the footballing pyramid very quickly, making 28 appearances in the Championship for Reading last season, and he has picked up where he left off in League 1 this term.

So far this season, the defender has averaged a 7.25 Sofascore match rating, the third-highest in the Reading squad, having been ranked as the Royal's best-performing player against Port Vale, making a total of five tackles.

Reading’s Nesta Guinness Walker in action with Norwich City's Marcelino Nunez

Not only is the Reading ace capable defensively, but he is also able to threaten on the front foot, as displayed when he completed an outrageous elastico skill move before firing a shot on goal against Hull City last season.

Having now had his first taste of Championship football, Guinness-Walker could be ready to join a team that will have aims of fighting for promotion this season, and West Brom should undoubtedly test the waters with an opening bid in the near future.

Leeds: Farke Eyeing Big Dan James Upgrade In £8.5m "Baller"

Leeds United have seven days left to finish their business for the summer transfer window before the deadline slams shut and are reportedly eyeing up another winger to add to their squad…

What's the latest Leeds transfer news?

Sky Sports recently reported that the Whites are interested in signing Genk forward Joseph Paintsil as they eye up a number of options in that area of the pitch.

The report claimed that the Belgian outfit will consider offers within the region of €10m (£8.5m), although it remains to be seen how much the Yorkshire-based side are willing to offer for his services.

Daniel Farke has made four signings for Leeds so far this summer; including Sam Byram, Karl Darlow, Ethan Ampadu, and Joe Rodon. He is now looking to possibly make the 25-year-old magician his fifth over the coming days, but would it be a good piece of business?

How good is Joseph Paintsil?

The Ghana international's form for Genk last season suggests that he has the ability to be a fantastic signing for the German head coach as the talented ace could be a huge upgrade on current Whites winger Daniel James.

Paintsil enjoyed a terrific 2022/23 campaign as the exciting maestro proved himself to be capable of scoring and assisting goals on a regular basis from a wide position, which is something that the ex-Manchester United flop is yet to do.

He averaged an excellent Sofascore rating of 7.13, which was higher than any Leeds player managed last term, over 36 Pro League appearances and contributed with an eye-catching 17 goals and 11 assists.

The nine-cap hotshot also created 12 'big chances' for his teammates and made 1.4 key passes per match, which suggests that he was slightly unfortunate to end up with only 11 assists.

Ghana international Joseph Paintsil.

James, on the other hand, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.72 and produced two goals and one assist in 20 Premier League matches for Fulham on loan.

The Wales international failed to deliver consistent quality in the top-flight as he scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in 106 league matches for Manchester United, Leeds, and the Cottagers combined prior to the current campaign.

His last season at Championship level also ended with four goals and nine assists in 33 outings for Swansea, which does not suggest that the drop back down to the second tier will allow him to reach Paintsil's impressive level of production in the final third, as he has never hit double figures for goals or assists in a single season throughout his senior career.

Paintsil, who was described as an "ice-cold baller" by journalist Owuraku Ampofo, could provide far more quality at the top end of the pitch week-in-week-out, which is why he would be a big upgrade on the Welsh flop if the 25-year-old wizard can translate his form over to English football.

The superb attacker has assisted two goals in two league starts this term and his ability to consistently provide goals and assists could elevate Farke's team to the next level, particularly when you consider that no current Leeds player managed more than five goals or four league assists last season.

Tottenham: Spurs Chiefs Eyeing "Special" Kane Replacement

Journalists Oliver Salt and Simon Jones of The Daily Mail have shared news on Tottenham Hotspur and their links to Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun.

Who will Spurs replace Kane with?

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou and chairman Daniel Levy are now faced with the almighty task of finding a replacement for club legend Harry Kane.

The 30-year-old sealed his multi-million pound move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich at the end of last week, coming after Tottenham reached an agreement to sell for around €100 million (£86m) plus an extra €20 million (£17.2m) in possible add-ons.

This comes as a great bit of business on paper when considering Kane had entered the final 12 months of his Spurs contract, but it leaves a gaping hole in quality for Postecoglou's front line.

harry-kane-3

Tottenham's manager, though, had seen the forward's exit coming and he claims Kane had made up his mind on leaving this summer.

“I had a conversation with Harry the first day he arrived and he was up front and honest, and I was the same,” Postecoglou said ahead of their opening 2-2 draw away to Brentford on Sunday.

“You get an indication there that he kind of made up his mind: that if the clubs agreed he would go, particularly if it was before the first game. That was my preference as well.

“There's nothing along the way that's sort of made me feel there's anything other than this outcome. None of these things happen in isolation, everyone is pretty clued into to what's going on, so from my perspective I hadn't received anything from Harry, the club or anyone else to suggest to me anything had changed about his stance."

Attention now turns to the final fortnight of this transfer window and whether Tottenham can sign a successor for Kane, who scored 30 goals in 38 league games last season.

The likes of Montpellier striker Elye Wahi, Gent's Gift Orban, Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku and Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic have all been linked in the last few days alone.

Balogun, who plies his trade for arch north London rivals Arsenal, is another to have been mentioned and this is backed by The Mail.

According to their reporters, Salt and Jones, Tottenham chiefs have pinpointed the USA international as one of their potential heirs to Kane. However, if Spurs decide to take their interest further, they may have to move quickly as Monaco plotting another bid.

Among the candidates to step into Kane's shoes, as per this report, there are also Lukaku and FC Porto star Mehdi Taremi.

How good is Folarin Balogun?

Folarin Balogun

The forward bagged a brilliant 22 goals in all competitions for Reims on loan last term, potentially alerting Spurs in their hunt for a prolific striker.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has also prasied Balogun as a "special" striker and believes he's "really brave".

“He’s a boy that has a really clear idea of what he wants to do with his career. He’s really ambitious, really committed and really brave," said Arteta.

“We discussed a lot before he made that move whether it was the right place to go and the other choices he had. He was so convinced. I’m really happy for him because he deserves what he’s getting.

“When you look at the numbers and what he is doing, it’s just incredible. It’s very rare to see that. But he’s got something special."

Man Utd: Ten Hag Could Secure Instant Mount Upgrade With "Elite" £34m Target

Manchester United have started their 2023/24 Premier League campaign off rather meekly. They were lucky to escape with all three points against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week before going down 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend.

Three points from six and just one goal scored wasn’t the start Erik ten Hag was anticipating, and he will be even more concerned by some of the performances, particularly from new signing Mason Mount.

The £60m summer arrival from Chelsea was expected to improve the United midfield.

Against Spurs, however, he was almost non-existent, having completed only 15 accurate passes and taken as few as 27 touches – even Andre Onana recorded more passes and touches, signifying how poorly he played as a creative-minded midfielder that makes things happen in the engine room.

Could this perhaps give the Dutchman a licence to dive back into the transfer market and lure another midfielder to Old Trafford?

The club have recently been on a scouting mission to France…

Will Manchester United make more signings?

United have shown interest in a few players during the final weeks of the transfer window, most notably defenders.

Frenchman Jean Clair-Todibo has been linked with a move and the Red Devils even sent scouts to monitor his performance for OGC Nice a couple of weeks ago.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

This wasn’t the only player that United were keeping tabs on, however.

According to Get French Football News, OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram was also being closely monitored in light of a potential move to England.

He wouldn’t break the bank either, with the Ligue 1 outfit valuing one of their prized assets at around €40m (£34m) and could Ten Hag act swiftly and bring him to Manchester in the coming days?

What could Khephren Thuram offer Manchester United?

With Rasmus Hojlund injured and Mount failing to showcase his true abilities so far, Ten Hag’s summer recruitment may soon come under criticism, with just Onana enjoying a solid start.

Thuram has enjoyed an impressive spell with Nice since joining in 2019, making 140 appearances and last season was his most productive yet, registering ten goal contributions – two goals and eight assists – across 50 appearances. This is made even better by the fact he typically operated as a defensive midfielder.

Khephren Thuram

Mount was deployed in a deeper role against Spurs alongside Casemiro, yet it clearly didn’t work out and Thuram could certainly be an instant upgrade on the former Chelsea gem in this position.

Indeed, last season, the Frenchman registered more league goal contributions (six v five), a higher pass success rate (85.1% v 75.2%), tackles won (25 v 19) and interceptions (38 v eight), suggesting that he offers more across both attacking and defensive metrics.

Thuram even ranked in the top 4% when compared to positional peers for progressive carries per 90 (3.4) and the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.65).

Mount on the other hand failed to rank in the top 40% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.78) while ranking in the top 17% for progressive carries per 90 (2.24), indicating the difference between the two players.

Journalist Zach Lowy even dubbed him as an “elite ball carrier” amid Liverpool’s interest in the youngster earlier in the summer transfer window.

For a fee of just £34m, Ten Hag could sign a player who won't just be part of his future plans, but a talent that could force his way into the starting XI straight away and be an instant Mount upgrade in the process.
