Clement could unearth a "big surprise" to replace Barisic at Rangers

Glasgow Rangers have roared back to life since Philippe Clement was appointed as the new manager last month, winning five of the previous six matches while scoring 18 goals and conceding just three.

The Belgian couldn’t have wished for a better start since replacing Michael Beale and the turnaround in form has been remarkable.

The former QPR boss won just eight of the opening 14 fixtures of the season and a failure to qualify for the Champions League group stages was a huge disappointment.

Combining this with domestic defeats to Kilmarnock, Celtic and Aberdeen meant his position became untenable, and he was sacked following a 3-1 loss to the Dons at Ibrox at the end of September. The 43-year-old left the new manager with a lot of work to do, especially considering the squad he inherited.

The summer transfer window that promised so much eventually turned into a major anticlimax, with only Jack Butland and Danilo truly showing their value to the Gers. As such, Clement will be keen to explore a few options once the January transfer window rolls around.

Another area that the former Club Brugge boss will need to deal with in the immediate future is looking at who is out of contract next year and aiming to secure the players he wants on longer deals.

Jon McLaughlin, Leon Balogun, Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, and Kemar Roofe are all in danger of departing for nothing come next summer.

Several of these players will naturally leave the club due to a lack of opportunities, but the most interesting case is Barisic, who is continuing to play a role in the first team, but could the Gers see someone else step up to the player should he leave?

Borna Barisic latest transfer news

The Croatian is among part of the ‘old guard’, as per se, featuring alongside Connor Goldson and James Tavernier on a regular basis since the start of the 2018/19 season, making 218 appearances for the club and becoming the first choice left back.

The defender was linked with AS Roma a few years ago but opted to sign a new deal at the Light Blues, committing his future to the club.

According to TEAMtalk last month, the Gers had offered the left back a new deal to fend off interest in him, yet nothing has been signed as yet.

Nottingham Forest have reportedly shown interest in the 30-year-old, along with fellow Premier League side Aston Villa and the next few weeks could be crucial with regard to tying him down for the next couple of years.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst signed Ridvan Yilmaz last summer from Besiktas as an apparent heir to the Croatian when he did leave Ibrox, but the 22-year-old has yet to establish himself as yet, only making sporadic appearances in the starting XI.

His future could look different under Clement, however, but there is a young talent who could force his way into the picture in the coming months – Johnly Yfeko.

Johnly Yfeko’s statistics at youth level

The 20-year-old spent time at Leicester City and Southampton before joining the Gers in January 2022 and despite making only 16 youth appearances down south, he took no time at all to make his mark in Glasgow.

After just a few short months at the club, he signed a deal until 2024 and Yfeko became a regular member of the B side during the 2022/23 campaign.

Indeed, the left-back played 14 times in the Lowland League last term, gaining vital experience against players much older and more experienced than him.

Van Bronckhorst clearly saw him as a future member of the first-team squad, bringing him into the matchday squad on three occasions before the World Cup break, yet he didn’t make an appearance from the bench.

During pre-season, however, Yfeko really began to step up and showcase his abilities. Under Beale, the youngster was given an opportunity during all four of the summer friendly ties and the former QPR boss lavished praise on him, saying:

“Big Johnly Yfeko again is becoming the big surprise of pre-season, making everybody smile.”

The defender was rewarded with a senior debut against Morton in the League Cup back in August and performed well during a 2-1 victory, leading to suggestions that he could be the long-term heir at left-back.

What the future holds for Johnly Yfeko

While the 20-year-old has failed to build on that start a few months ago, Clement certainly has some grand plans for the defender.

Just last week, Yfeko signed a contract extension until 2026 and academy director Zeb Jacobs was clearly happy to have tied him down to a long-term deal, saying: “We are delighted that Johnly has extended his contract at Rangers.

“It is recognition of his development since joining the club, and his recent experience with the first-team is testament to his hard work, focus and dedication.”

The left position now looks stacked with players who will be aiming to become the heir to Barisic, as Yilmaz and Yfeko are joined by B team starlet Robbie Fraser, who also looks like he has the potential to make inroads into the senior side.

Barisic’s future may well be finalised in the coming weeks, but with the player on the wrong side of 30, he won't be at the top for much longer.

With competition looking rife, this could only benefit the likes of Yfeko and Fraser, who know they will need to perform brilliantly every time they make an appearance in the senior side.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast, could the Belgian perhaps utilise some of the younger members of his side? Only time will tell, but winger Ross McCausland has shown that there are plenty of chances available if you are good enough.

Of course, Clement will explore the transfer market for his own targets, but with the Ibrox conveyor belt continuing to produce excellent talents, he would be silly to ignore some of the players who are making waves in the B team.

Portuguese superstar Ronaldo is the only man to have got close to eternal rival Messi over the course of their remarkable playing careers. Two all-time greats boast 13 Ballons d’Or between them and countless entries in the history books.

They are two of the most decorated players to have ever graced the game – claiming domestic, continental and international honours – with their exploits on the goalscoring front unlikely to be repeated. Capello is, however, eager to point out that one star rises higher than the other when it comes to comparisons between two icons of world football.

GettyWHAT CAPELLO SAID

The former Real Madrid and Juventus boss told reporters at the Laureus World Sport Awards: “[Ronaldo] is a great player. He won titles, he won the Ballon d’Or, but as I said before, it’s not as great as how Messi has been. For me, if you talk to me about Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi, I will say Messi. Ronaldo is a great scorer, shoots, does everything, knows how to do everything, but he is not a genius. Very simple.”

Ronaldo and Messi are both going strong in 2024, despite now being 39 and 36 years of age respectively. CR7 has broken the 40-goal barrier again at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, while his Argentine foe is starring for Inter Miami in MLS, and both have international trophies to chase down this summer at European Championship and Copa America events.

Clement must bench Davies for Rangers titan who won 86% duels vs Livi

Philippe Clement has enjoyed a dream start at Glasgow Rangers, but he must not get carried away just yet and keep his players grounded.

The Ibrox side have an excellent chance of winning their first trophy since May 2022 when they face Aberdeen in the League Cup final next month, while progress in Europe looks attainable.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the Belgian may be able to delve into the market and sign a couple of players who could freshen up the squad while ditching a few who don’t seem to have a future at the club.

Ben Davies is a key example, and could he find himself moving away from Ibrox in the coming months?

Ben Davies’ season in numbers

The Englishman has been a regular in the Europa League, starting all four matches so far, yet he ranks 15th across the squad for interceptions per game (0.3) and seventh for possession lost per game (11.5), which suggests he hasn’t quite been at the races.

Domestically, Davies has started only four times in the Premiership so far, with the Gers conceding four goals across those matches.

For large spells during the summer, it appeared as though the former Liverpool centre-back was ready to leave the club, with Stoke City rumoured to be eyeing a swoop for him.

Nothing materialised, however, and he remains in Glasgow, until January at least. Clement must surely utilise the services of Leon Balogun on a more regular basis, especially judging by his displays under the Belgian.

Leon Balogun has impressed recently

While the decision to re-sign Balogun during the summer wasn’t exactly met with choruses of applause by the Ibrox faithful, his spell in Scotland between 2020 and 2022 was impressive.

Under the former QPR boss, however, he made just two appearances, in games that the Light Blues both won and it seemed as though his backup stature was working.

Rangers defender Leon Balogun.

Under the 49-year-old, however, Balogun has started three of his first seven matches and performed admirably, especially against Livingston on the weekend.

The 35-year-old was a titan at the heart of the defence alongside Connor Goldson as he won all four of his ground duels along with nine out of his 11 aerial duels – working out as 86% of his total duels won – and the Livi forwards just couldn’t find a way past him.

The Nigerian wasn’t even dribbled past during the tie and made three interceptions, two tackles and four clearances in what was a commanding performance at a ground in which the club have occasionally struggled on in the past.

While not a long-term option for Clement, Balogun’s class has shone through over the last month or so and it's clear that the club have been better defensively in the games that he has started.

Rangers have yet to concede a goal from open play across Balogun’s five appearances thus far and this could make Clement’s decision on who should partner Goldson at the back slightly easier.

Davies has sparkled in spells, yet his lack of consistency could lead to him being moved on in the foreseeable future.

Crystal Palace make contact over "terrific" player, he’d be open to move

Crystal Palace are keen to bolster the ranks in January and Roy Hodgson now looks to have received a boost as one of the Eagles' reported targets is open to a move to Selhurst Park, according to a report.

Crystal Palace updates

Crystal Palace have performed largely to expectation this campaign and sit 13th in the Premier League table with 15 points from their opening 13 fixtures, straddling the line between comfortable mid-table obscurity and giving themselves plenty of breathing space away from the relegation zone.

In fairness to the Eagles, they have had to contend with some notable injury absences this term, with the likes of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze spending time on the sidelines in the earlier part of the campaign.

Eze suffered a new concern last weekend in their 2-1 defeat to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, alongside teammate Cheick Doucoure, with both players withdrawn from the encounter in a major blow for Hodgson. Mali international Doucoure required a stretcher when he was taken off, and his issue has now been confirmed as a serious achilles injury.

Giving an update on Eze in his post-match press conference, Hodgson stated: "He didn’t exactly go down, did he? The way I saw it, he was brought down and as he was trying to get away, the player landed on him and has damaged his ankle."

Undoubtedly frustrated, the 76-year-old will need to find a way round losing two key components of his engine room sooner rather than later, with a tough test away to West Ham United awaiting the Eagles on Sunday.

Casting an eye towards January, Crystal Palace now have an eye on a player that could help to strengthen their forward line, according to a report.

Crystal Palace keen on Chuba Akpom

According to TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace have made contact with Ajax to enquire about striker Chuba Akpom, who is also attracting interest from Fulham ahead of the January transfer window.

The report states that the former England Under-21 international would be open to a move to England and Ajax would consider the prospect of allowing the 28-year-old to leave on loan. Everton, Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United, alongside Championship clubs have also thrown their hat in the ring for his signature.

Middlesbrough's former striker Chuba Akpom.

Proving his worth in the English second tier last term, Akpom, who has previously been labelled "terrific" by his old boss Michael Carrick, scored 29 goals in 42 outings, demonstrating a keen eye for goal that ended up securing himself a move to a European giant.

Nevertheless, if a move back home is on the cards, Crystal Palace could land a proven goalscorer to help boost their options in the final third ahead of the second period of the season.

PIF eyeing Newcastle move to sign "quality" £40m+ new star for Eddie Howe

As solid as Newcastle United have been this season, with their latest victory over Manchester United in the Premier League another highlight, they have been caught out at times for their lack of squad depth. The injuries have continued to pile up, including Nick Pope's most recent long-term blow to hand Eddie Howe yet another headache in an attempt to balance both domestic and European action.

As things stand, the Magpies are on course to finish outside of the top four in what could reflect badly on their summer transfer window. Keen to avoid a similar mistake next season, PIF are reportedly already eyeing up reinforcements, including one particular star defender.

Newcastle transfer news

At the time, the Magpies' summer business seemed good enough to get the job done. Ever since, however, that has not proved to be the case. Sandro Tonali is at the beginning of a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules, whilst Harvey Barnes has struggled with injuries, leaving Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento to carry the torch for summer arrivals who are impressing. Having suffered several injuries to force Dan Burn out of position and into centre-back, before he was sidelined, it's clear that the Magpies need defensive reinforcements. And they could get exactly that in the form of one star player next summer.

According to Sport via Sport Witness, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Jean-Clair Todibo next summer alongside Premier League rivals Chelsea. The deal will not be cheap, however, with Nice reportedly starting their price at €50m (£42m) and demanding more from there.

Jean-Clair Todibo

It doesn't seem as though the hefty fee will put the English clubs off, with both Newcastle and Chelsea reportedly ready to meet Nice's demands if Todibo is still at the club in the summer transfer window.

Todibo has the "quality" that Newcastle need

A former Barcelona defender who is now impressing in Ligue 1, Todibo is the type of player that Newcastle should be targeting if they want to qualify for the Champions League for a second time under Howe. Todibo's stats show that he is more than capable of going stride for stride with the current backline at St James' Park too.

Given the numbers, it's clear that Tobido may not just come in as cover at Newcastle, but he'd be entering with a challenge for either Botman or Schar when it comes to keeping their place. It's no surprise that Nice manager Francesco Farioli was keen to sing the defender's praises amid links with a move away in the summer, saying:

“These rumours have existed since the start, so we’ve developed antibodies against them – be it the team or myself. There are a few days left – we’ll see. There is a chance that he stays, and I would be happy because he’s a quality player and he would be very hard to replace. I hope the rumours stay rumours."

Journalist shares "only name" who could replace Moyes at West Ham right now

A member of the English press has shared the "only" managerial name he's heard who could end up replacing David Moyes at West Ham.

Moyes likely to leave West Ham in 2024

The Scotsman's contract is due to expire in 2024, coming after many years of success in east London. Moyes, who came in when West Ham were battling relegation in 2020, has since guided them to three European campaigns. Reaching the Europa League semis in 2022 and winning the Conference League last season, supporters have witnessed unprecedented achievements during the 60-year-old's reign.

West Ham United could replace one of their stalwarts at the London Stadium…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 4, 2023

Few could've envisaged the progress made by West Ham over the last couple of seasons, but last term also saw the Irons seriously underachieve in the Premier League. West Ham finished 14th in 2022/2023 and appear to be a mixed bag so far this campaign, with reports suggesting Moyes is "unlikely" to be offered a new contract to remain past next year.

West Ham doing due-diligence for Moyes successor

As such, there are already rumours over who could succeed Moyes at the London Stadium. Journalist Toby Cudworth, speaking to Talking Transfers last month, said West Ham are doing due-diligence on finding a new manager for next season.

“Our understanding is that West Ham have been looking at future replacements for him," said Cudworth.

"He won the Conference League in June, has one year left on his contract, but there’s been no engagement over a new contract Our understanding is that West Ham are in no hurry to replace him despite the indifferent Premier League results… David Sullivan doesn’t really see an available candidate who offers substantially more than David Moyes.

“While West Ham are picking up results and getting the odd win, and maintaining a decent position while doing well in Europe, there’s no real appetite to make that change. Likewise there’s no real appetite to extend his contract."

Journalist shares "only name" he's heard to replace Moyes

Writing in a Q&A for The Daily Mail, journalist Kieran Gil has shared the "only name" he's heard as a candidate to replace Moyes at West Ham next year. According to the reporter, that name is former Wolves and Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui.

Julen Lopetegui.

The 57-year-old is a free agent after leaving Molineux and ready-available for hire. His experience both in England and winning trophies abroad also makes him a pretty enticing option, but Gil also says the picture could "totally change" come the end of the season.

“It’s too early to say. Managers who are available now may not be in the summer," said the Mail journalist.

“The only name that’s been mentioned to me is Julen Lopetegui, who we know wants to return to the Premier League. But that picture could totally change closer to the end of the season.”

Eyes on the Ashes: Australia's Test squad talking points

The future of Shaun Marsh, the quest for an allrounder, Matthew Wade’s chances and the fast-bowling back-up were all areas addressed by Trevor Hohns

Andrew McGlashan09-Jan-2019There was another Australia squad with plenty to digest as the selectors brought in a new-look top order to try and overcome the batting woes for the Sri Lanka series. Shaun and Mitchell Marsh, Peter Handscomb and Aaron Finch have been dropped – their Ashes hope now hanging by a thread – with Joe Burns, Matt Renshaw and the uncapped Will Pucovski taking their place. National selector Trevor Hohns addressed the media to cover various issues, both in terms of the immediate selection and the bigger picture, and here’s how he reacted to the major talking points.Hohns: “Shaun hasn’t done what we’d like him to have done over the last period and I am sure he would say the same thing. As far as the Ashes go that’s a long way off, he now has the opportunity in one-day cricket to get some form back. But the door is certainly not closedHohns: “Joe Burns has a good record in Test cricket and has been in good form leading up to when the Big Bash started. Matt Renshaw on the other hand is very, very highly regarded young player, he’s scored a lot of runs in England when he went over there and played county cricket. With the Ashes in mind it’s probably time now to get him back and around the group.”Hohns: “With Matthew Wade it’s fantastic to see him scoring a lot of runs. It wasn’t long ago that he was in our Test squad, he struggled and we dropped him. He was wicketkeeper at that stage, he’s playing as a wicketkeeper-batsman for Tasmania and it just so happens we have a wicketkeeper-batsman in our Test side who is the captain. If Matthew wants to be considered as a straight out batsman it would be nice to see him batting a little higher up for Tasmania and that conversation has been had.”Mitchell Marsh takes a breather•Getty ImagesHohns: “There’s always talk about having an allrounder in your side. My only answer to that is if the allrounder isn’t performing and you don’t have a good allrounder, well maybe we shouldn’t have one and go back to the stock standard six batsmen, four bowlers. But if you have a match-winning allrounder, they’re like gold. If we can unearth one, that’d be fantastic.”Hohns: “They are definitely our best three fast bowlers, I don’t think anyone would argue that. Whether they are operating as the best unit, I’m sure there’s some improvement that can be had there. There are fringe bowlers there’s no doubt about that and three of those are in the CA XI squad. We also have Jhye Richardson who is seen as a very bright prospect. But we think it’s essential that we have Pete around. He’s such an experienced campaigner and he’s great around the group.”Hohns: “Of course a lot will depend on the availability of Smith, Warner and Bancroft for that matter as well. Our players right now and through the Indian series had a great opportunity – we saw it like that and we hoped that they would see it like that – to make it difficult for us if and when these players come back and are available. There are still positions available of course, particularly given the revamp of the squad for now. So these guys now have the opportunity to cement a place or at least make it difficult for us to leave them out going forward.”
