Sold for £24m: Leeds struck gold with star who’s now worth millions less

Leeds United fans will be impressed by how well their side has dealt with adversity so far this season, as Daniel Farke had to pick up the pieces from a number of high profile departures this summer, and form a new-look Whites XI capable of challenging near the top of the Championship.

The early indicators seem to suggest that the Whites will be in the promotion reckoning for the majority of the long season ahead, with six games already done and dusted in the testing division, with Leeds only losing one match so far.

It seems as though the signings in through the door this summer have been thought about methodically too, away from Leeds’ recent Premier League past when rash purchases entered the building and flopped, with new summer buy Largie Ramazani opening his Whites account this weekend just gone away at Cardiff City.

Moreover, the likes of Ao Tanaka and Manor Solomon have equally looked comfortable at the level when thrown into action, with the German well aware that he will need to utilise his full squad to stand a chance at promotion.

Whilst these new faces look as if they’re settling in well, other purchases from Leeds’ not-so-distant Premier League days never managed to win over the hardened Elland Road masses, including this expensive £20m buy back in 2022.

Tyler Adams' transfer to Leeds

Tyler Adams would arrive in Leeds in the same hectic summer transfer window that saw the likes of Luis Sinisterra, Maximilian Wober and many others join for mega bucks from luxurious European outfits, with the hype surrounding all these lavish buys through the roof.

Many saw the American midfielder as a natural successor to Kalvin Phillips as well, who was moved on that hectic window to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, with those who were expecting the world of the ex-RB Leipzig man on his arrival severely let down with what they actually got.

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

He was also meant to be a smart pick-up owing to his former connections to then Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, with the pair having spent time with each other at New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig, but not even that affinity could help breathe life into the now 25-year-old’s forgettable time in West Yorkshire.

Instead, Adams’ time at Leeds would pass him by as he had neither the leadership skills nor the tenacity of the departing Phillips to steer his new side away from relegation doom, with his one full campaign playing for the Whites stained by Leeds dropping down to the second tier.

The main Leeds lineup has gone through some major changes since Adams’ debut, with six of the starting eleven that comprised the above team now off the Whites roster, but Leeds will at least be pleased they managed to sell on the American dud permanently as opposed to other flops who are only away from Elland Road on loan temporarily.

AFC Bournemouth, despite Adams putting in some unmemorable performances across his 26-game stint in West Yorkshire, decided to buy the struggling 27-year-old for £24m after the Whites had succumbed to their relegation fate, in the hope that they could be the club to get a tune out of the underperforming former Leipzig man.

Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams.

However, the Cherries will probably have wished they never bothered taking a gamble on the American now, who has had to deal with a whole host of injury issues since relocating to the South Coast last year.

Adams' time at Bournemouth

Instead of sparking back into life as a top performer for Bournemouth, with his past pedigree seeing him line up in the Champions League for Leipzig alongside notable names such as Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku, the former Leeds flop has been a permanent fixture of the Vitality Stadium treatment room.

Since joining in the summer of 2023, Adams has only been fit to play four total games for Andoni Iraola’s side, with only one full 90 minutes managed by the 5 foot 9 midfielder as well across this disastrous span of his career.

The injury-prone midfielder did show signs of his quality during that rare full 90 minutes against Everton in March, with nine duels impressively won against the Toffees, but the Cherries number 18 has been nowhere to be seen this campaign so far for his employers.

It’s led to his value dramatically dropping down from the £24m Bournemouth once forked out, when looking at Football Transfers, with Adams worth considerably less now.

Tyler Adams

Adams' value in 2024

According to the site, the 27-year-old is worth just £13.1m now, which is a big decrease from the £24m he once was worth.

Adams’ value in 2024 is actually less now than the likes of Ethan Ampadu back playing for Farke, who excels in one of the holding midfield spots that the American used to occupy for Leeds, with the Welshman worth £15.4m compared next to the current Bournemouth dud.

The American’s value will no doubt continue to fall more and more, as his injury demons continue to get the better of him, with Adams missing from action at the moment yet again owing to back surgery.

Iraola even worryingly admitted that he doesn’t know when he will have his number 18 available for selection again when candidly talking about his injury issues in pre-season, as Leeds continue to thank their lucky stars that they cashed in on the ex-Leipzig midfielder when they did.

It now feels like an eternity ago that Adams was scoring crucial goals like these for Leipzig in the Champions League, but Leeds would have just taken the money and ran when Bournemouth came in, as the Whites focus solely now on winning promotion this season away from Adams’ continued woes.

Explained: Why Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham won't be able to negotiate TV deals with Netflix

Wrexham co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have been warned they won't be able to negotiate television deals with Netflix.

McElhenney and Reynolds have enjoyed success at Wrexham since taking over the Welsh club and launching their famous 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary that has been watched by fans all over the globe. The Hollywood duo have taken the club out of the National League and into League One and harbour dreams of one day playing in the Premier League.

More investment will be needed if Wrexham are to continue their meteoric rise and ultimately play their way into the English top flight. Yet football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson, a professor of economics at Sheffield Hallam University, has explained why the duo won't be able to negotiate another lucrative television deal with popular streaming service Netflix.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Wilson told Slingo: "TV rights are collectively bargained on behalf of the division and then distributed accordingly. So clubs aren't allowed to go out and sign their own individual rights deals currently. It will be interesting to see how that changes, particularly with streaming services, use of social media, digital platforms and so on. But it's not something I think the league organisers want to give away just now and that's right, in my opinion, that's right from a competitive integrity perspective."

West Ham have hit the jackpot on Moyes signing who’s worth more than Bowen

West Ham’s current wage structure represents good value, with their best players earning the highest figures (mostly), with very few players presenting poor value for money with their wage packages.

Danny Ings is perhaps the most eye-catching at the top end of the wage list, earning £125k-per-week, the third highest at the club, despite playing more of a bit-part role.

The average wages in the squad are between £70,000-£100,000, with ten players earning between these two figures, including Max Kilman, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Niklas Fullkrug, and Mohammed Kudus.

The two highest earners in the squad, both making £150,000 per week, are Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta, largely seen as two of the Hammers’ best players.

Bowen and Paqueta's form in 2024/25

Bowen made 44 appearances last campaign, scoring 20 goals and providing ten assists in his 3,842 minutes played. It was a brilliant campaign in which the England winger was rewarded with a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euros, with his value rising all the way to £42m as per Transfermarkt.

Paqueta, on the other hand, made 43 appearances last season, scoring eight goals, providing seven assists, and totalling 3,478 minutes played. The Brazilian is valued at a similar price tag by Transfermarkt, sitting at £46m.

Both players have started this season in a slower fashion. The skipper has three goals and provided two assists in his first nine appearances, which isn’t too bad, but Paqueta has scored just twice in his nine appearances so far.

That said, neither are quite as valuable as a certain Mohamed Kudus.

Mohammed Kudus' market value in 2024

Kudus, who was signed from Ajax for £38m last summer by David Moyes has been on quite the rise to stardom since moving to English football.

Such has been his productive form in the famous claret and blue that fellow Premier League sides such as Manchester City and Arsenal are sniffing around a player who boasts a larger market value than Bowne and Co with the Ghanain’s release clause sitting a pretty £85m.

Mohammed Kudus for West Ham.

Since joining the club, the 24-year-old has made 54 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in 4,118 minutes played.

So, why is the hard-working player worth more than Bowen and Paqueta? Well, this could be due to his profile being slightly rarer and desirable for top clubs who want to add pace in transition, efficient attackers, and forwards that work hard for the team out of possession.

Bowen and Paqueta are both 27 years old, whereas Kudus is just 24 years old, which does play a part in the valuation of players, so this is important to consider on top of the stats above.

Indeed, the metrics also show why Kudus is so valuable, putting in big defensive shifts, whilst still offering excellent goal threat, pace on the break, and driving his team forwards, shown by his 5.47 progressive carries per 90 which are streets ahead of his colleagues.

Kudus may not be West Ham’s most important player, but you can certainly see why he is so highly valued, and we could just see some of the “big six” begin to circle for his signature soon.

Talks back on as Man Utd in contact with "exceptional" Ten Hag replacement

Manchester United are back in contact with a potential Erik ten Hag successor as they look to plan for all eventualities, it has been claimed.

Erik ten Hag running out of time

It is no secret that Ten Hag is under massive pressure at Old Trafford, just months after signing a new deal with the Red Devils.

If the FA Cup win against Manchester City papered over cracks in his management, playstyle and results, then the opening part of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign has widened those cracks to chasms.

Man Utd ace who left for only £16m is now outperforming the whole club

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled at Manchester United this season.

ByMatt Dawson Oct 14, 2024

His return of eight points in seven games is the worst in Manchester United’s Premier League history, breaking a record he himself set 12 months ago, a clear demonstration that his side are going firmly in the wrong direction.

Currently 14th in the Premier League, Manchester United have won just twice and for his side’s most recent 0-0 draw with Aston Villa he dropped almost all of the signings he has made to date, with Lisandro Martinez, Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony all among the substitutes.

Clearly, a decision has to be made soon as United’s early blip threatens to derail their season, and now it seems that the United hierarchy are sounding out replacements once more.

Man Utd back in contact with "exceptional" manager

Now, TBR report that Manchester United have reopened contacts with free agent manager Thomas Tuchel as INEOS are “drawing up contingency plans” should they decide to sack Ten Hag.

Thomas Tuchel

The former Chelsea man, dubbed “exceptional” by Sky Sports presenter Dougie Critchley on X, has been out of work since he was sacked by Bayern Munich at the end of last season and was strongly linked with the Manchester United job over the summer.

Now, it has been reported that talks are back on, and that “Tuchel’s people have had contact once again” from the Red Devils as Ten Hag remains under scrutiny.

On paper, it would certainly be an upgrade; during his time in the Premier League, Tuchel’s Chelsea averaged more points per game, more goals scored, and fewer goals conceded than Ten Hag’s time at Manchester United has currently produced.

England role complicates Man Utd move for Tuchel

One thing that may have prompted a resurgence in talks between Manchester United and Tuchel is the potential vacancy to manage the England national team, with the German firmly in the frame for the job.

Current interim boss Lee Carsley has done little to suggest that he wants or deserves the role on a full-time basis, and German outlet Bild report that Tuchel is “in talks to become the next England manager”, which would prevent him taking up the post at Old Trafford.

The role has been vacant since Gareth Southgate’s departure after a second consecutive EURO final defeat, and the FA will be looking to fill it in the not too distant future, which could leave Tuchel with a choice to make on his future.

For his part, he is thought to be keen on the Manchester United role, but they may have to move quickly to ensure his head isn’t turned by the lure of the Three Lions.

Newcastle named most likely club to sign Lille star Jonathan David in 2025

Newcastle United’s financial muscle means they are in pole position to sign a prolific attacking player, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies continue to be linked with possible new signings ahead of the upcoming transfer windows, with Andrija Maksimovic being touted as a target. The 17-year-old is currently thriving at Red Star Belgrade and would be considered a long-term prospect who can grow into a star over time.

Omar Marmoush is a hugely talented player who has been likened to Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah, with the Eintracht Frankfurt star also backed to seal a move to Newcastle soon. The attacking ace has scored an incredible eight goals in just six Bundesliga appearances so far this season, including a last-gasp equaliser against Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Another wide player who has been mentioned as an option for the Magpies is Bryan Mbeumo, with the Brentford ace also enjoying a fantastic start to the 2024/25 campaign. His goal at home to Wolves over the weekend means he has six in the Premier League already this season.

Newcastle and Manchester United are reportedly going head-to-head to complete the signing of Borussia Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi, too, as Paul Mitchell looks to beat his predecessor Dan Ashworth to his services.

Newcastle boosted in efforts to sign 24 y/o striker

According to Sport Mediaset [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are still firmly in the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, with their financial strength putting them ahead of Inter Milan and Barcelona as the most likely club to snap him up. Inter are believed to have already made strides to sign the 24-year-old on a free transfer next summer, but the Magpies have the edge because of their wealth, potentially offering the soon-to-be free agent a hefty salary.

Aston Villa transfer target Jonathan David in action for Lille.

Newcastle should be doing everything they can to acquire David’s signature, given his reputation as a massive talent with the world at his feet. He has a superb record at both club and international level, scoring 92 goals in 196 appearances for Lille, as well as 29 goals in 56 caps for Canada.

Meanwhile, former youth coach Hanny El-Magrabi has hailed his brilliance, backing him to become truly elite over time: “I enjoyed coaching the person, not just the player. What impressed me most was him continuing to be the person that he was here and carrying that with him in Europe – leading by example. He can be one of the best players in the world in a very short time. The sky is the limit.”

Inter and Barca are massive clubs in their own right, so it is understandable why David could eye a move to either, but the fact that Newcastle are in a stronger financial position will certainly be significant.

Journalist provides worrying Largie Ramazani injury update for Leeds United

Leeds United have been dealt a major blow as Daniel Farke has confirmed that they will be missing a key man for the foreseeable future, adding to their hefty injury woes at Elland Road.

Leeds marching on together despite injury woes

Leeds may well have lost midfield duo Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev for much of the remainder of 2024, but they have continued their strong early season Championship form without the pair.

Club chiefs think £150k-p/w ace wants to join Leeds; could terminate deal

He could be sent packing from his current club after just months with them.

Currently 3rd, the Yorkshire side have moved to mitigate the impact of their absences through the signing of free agent Josuha Guilavogui, with the veteran midfielder signing a contract until the end of the season at Elland Road and with Farke confirming that he is ready to face Bristol City on Saturday lunchtime. However, a new injury has dented the good feeling in west Yorkshire.

Another serious injury confirmed for Leeds United

Now, Farke has delivered another hammer blow on the injury front, with one of his side’s brightest talents so far this season set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines. That comes in the form of Largie Ramazani, who limped off with an ankle injury 10 minutes after opening the scoring for Leeds in midweek, as they edged past Watford 2-1 to continue their strong early season form.

The Belgian, who was described as an “excellent” addition by Football Analyst Ben Mattinson, has managed three goals and one assist in eight Championship outings in his fledgling Leeds career, but that form will now need to be put on hold.

After the game, Farke was hopeful his injury wasn’t too bad: “I hope for not a bad injury, we deserve a bit of luck,” he told the media.

However, those hopes have been dashed as the German confirmed the bad news for his flying winger ahead of Leeds’ clash with Bristol City, revealing that he expects to be without Ramazani for at least a month.

LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross shared the worst case scenario from Farke’s press conference on X/Twitter: “Bad news with Ramazani. He twisted his ankle and it’s a serious ligament injury. No need for surgery, but out for four to six weeks. The best case is at the end of November. Could last to December depending on rehab.”

That will see the Belgian miss at least seven games for his new side, beginning with Bristol City on Saturday. Along Farke’s timeframe, he is certain to miss games up until they face Blackburn Rovers at the end of November, while both home ties against Derby County and Middlesbrough in the first 10 days of December could also come too soon for him.

The news comes as a major blow to the Yorkshire side, but they will be grateful that their upcoming fixtures are easier on paper than those they have already played this season, while they have been boosted by the returns of both Manor Solomon and Dan James from their own injuries, which provides Farke with a ready replacement for Ramazani.

“First half I thought it was exceptional,” said Arteta after Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Southampton.

“The amount of dominance that we had in the areas that we played, the amount of situations and chances we created in open play and set pieces, our counter-press worked really well there. It’s unbelievable that we didn’t score a goal.

“Then we started the second half, we were a bit sloppy, especially in the first 5-10 minutes with the ball and then the game became a little more open. Then the chance they had, they scored the goal, and then again, we’ve thrown everything away that we did in the first half. It was a completely brand-new game in a really difficult context and the team reacted incredibly well with a lot of composure; big belief, very good clarity in what we had to do. The crowd were exceptional, the subs were exceptional and we managed to win again.”

While Bukayo Saka put in another excellent display against Southampton, striker Gabriel Jesus was a cause for concern. The Brazilian, who played just 19 minutes of football across all competitions before being handed the nod on Saturday, was substituted on the hour mark despite the scores being level – with Jesus dropping a “5/10” performance overall.

Jesus could leave Arsenal with Arteta a real fan of Marmoush

There are doubts over the £265,000-per-week star’s suitability to lead the line, with Havertz the preferred option. According to reports out of Spain, Jesus could leave Arsenal with Palmeiras interested in signing him. They add that Arteta is also a real fan of a potential replacement – Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush.

The Egyptian has been linked with a move to north London very recently, with some reports claiming that Marmoush “dreams” of a switch to Arsenal or Liverpool. The 25-year-old, as per Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, is also stalling on signing a new contract amid his sensational start to the season.

He already boasts nine goals and six assists over just nine games in all competitions, and if Marmoush continues in this form, it is surely only a matter of time before elite English sides like Arsenal come knocking.

The Egyptian has now scored 178 goals in his time in the Premier League with both Chelsea and Liverpool – the sixth most by any player in Premier League history. After moving Lampard aside, Salah has Sergio Aguero in his sights and needs just seven more goals to climb to fifth.

The winger is not finished yet either and is targeting more triumphs this season. However, with his contract ending at the end of the season, it remains to be seen how far Salah can climb up the top scorers' list with just 15 games of the season remaining.

Chelsea soon have a double-header against Newcastle United, facing the Magpies in a Premier League clash on Sunday before taking on Eddie Howe’s side again in their Carabao Cup last 16 clash midway through next week.

Maresca appears to be resting his most crucial men for those encounters, meaning some fringe stars need to grasp an opportunity to impress this evening. With Mykhailo Mudryk battling for his Chelsea future, a stellar performance against Panathinaikos would do wonders to lift the pressure off his shoulders.

Unfortunately, Maresca won’t be able to call upon exciting youngster Josh Acheampong, amid an ongoing contract dispute at Stamford Bridge which is threatening to ruin his career there.

Chelsea reportedly believe Acheampong is attempting to leave behind their back, as his representatives offer him around to interested sides, with Maresca shedding light on the situation on Wednesday.

“It’s a shame. I think Josh potentially can become a top player. He is still 18, so still very young, so many things can change for him, but he can potentially be very important thing for Chelsea,” said Maresca’s on Acheampong’s situation.

“It’s so important for the club that our intention is not to lose him. The first thing we need to do is to find a solution for his future. The most important thing at this stage is to get minutes, enjoy and to play football. For him, I don’t know the people who are trying to solve the problem, if they are helping him or not. I really like Josh and I would really like to have him here with us but it is not possible.”

While Acheampong won’t have an opportunity to play tonight, there is a real chance for winger Pedro Neto to stake a claim in the starting eleven.

Sancho and Madueke in danger of Chelsea axe for Neto

According to GiveMeSport, Neto is on course for a chance to stake his claim in the Chelsea starting XI on a regular basis.

The Portugal international is set to be handed Maresca’s nod for their clash against Panathinaikos, and if he impresses, it is believed Neto could be set for a more prominent starting role in the coming weeks.

Pedro-Neto-Chelsea

It is even believed that the likes of Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke could be dropped in favour of Neto, despite the duo being on a total of around £150,000-per-week impressing in the early stages of this season.

Called “underrated” by Fabrizio Romano, Neto impressed during a brief cameo in their defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, but it looks as if the 24-year-old former Wolves star could be seen more often very shortly.
