Dream Salah replacement: Liverpool in talks to sign "Europe’s best player"

Liverpool returned to Premier League action in a disappointing manner on Saturday, having been made to settle for a 2-2 draw with Marco Silva’s Fulham.

The title-chasing Reds had to play the majority of the contest with ten men after an early red card was handed out to Andrew Robertson, leading to a share of the points having to be stomached come full-time.

As much as Robertson let himself down as an experienced figure in Arne Slot’s camp, nobody can accuse Mohamed Salah of not being at his blistering best this season, even as his contract situation remains up in the air.

Salah's importance at Liverpool

Despite being 32 years of age, the Egyptian maverick is showing no signs of rust when donning a Reds jersey, with Salah helping himself to an assist in this score draw versus the Cottagers.

He was still lovely against the Londoners, firing three shots towards goal, but the usually potent attacker would have to make do with just an assist after he played Cody Gakpo into space for Liverpool’s opener in the thrilling contest.

If the sublime Liverpool number 11 had found the back of the net on Saturday, that would have been eight league games on the spin for Salah where he’d scored, with the forward ageing like a fine wine on Merseyside.

In total, he has a staggering 16 goals and 13 assists next to his name from only 23 fixtures, with the anxiety levels ramping up now no doubt over whether he will stay at Liverpool past this season or whether a new suitor will come in and snap him up.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah scores

If the latter does become an unfortunate reality for Slot and Co, they could do far worse than securing the services of this explosive star as his replacement.

Liverpool eyeing up dream Salah replacement

As per a report from journalist Graeme Bailey the table-topping Reds have informed Barcelona that they would be over the moon if a move for Raphinha could finally take place.

The report further reveals that Arsenal and Manchester City – alongside Liverpool – all enquired about the spellbinding Brazilian in the summer. The trio of sides are still interested in the player and have allegedly been in talks with agents regarding a potential statement in 2025.

Well known to fans in England for his heroics whilst at Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa, Liverpool will also be keeping tabs on the constantly entertaining winger when you look at how well he’s taken to life in Spain.

Raphinha is putting up Salah-like numbers for Hansi Flick’s giants this season to date, with the growing possibility that he could be the exact replacement Slot’s men are calling out for if their esteemed servant leaves the building.

Very similar when comparing their attacking games over the last year using FBRef, alongside the fact Raphinha is remarkably only two goal contributions off Salah for his 2024/25 output, the South American might well be just what Liverpool need to soften any blow that might well come their way.

Raphinha’s stunning goal and assist numbers have even seen him be labelled as “Europe’s best player in 24/25” by Sky Sports journalist Dougie Critchley, despite Salah lighting up the Premier League.

It would be a real knock to the system if Liverpool were to lose their magnificent attacker, but if Raphinha then comes in, that gaping wound could be sorted out rather quickly.

Alec Stewart calls on England selectors to keep faith as he defends county 'breeding ground'

Surrey director of cricket says gulf in standards is due to unavailability of international players

Andrew Miller30-Mar-2022Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, insists that county cricket remains the primary “breeding ground” for England’s Test cricketers, but acknowledges that the gulf between the domestic and international game has widened in recent years, due in a large part to the reduced availability of the world’s best players. For that reason, Stewart – who confirmed he is not in the running to become the new managing director of the England men’s team – has warned the selectors not to over-react to the failings of the team in Australia and West Indies this winter, after they capped a run of eight Tests without victory with a humiliating ten-wicket loss in Grenada this week. Two of Surrey’s most prominent players were casualties of England’s 4-0 Ashes loss. Rory Burns, the club captain and England’s senior opener at the start of the winter, was omitted from the West Indies tour after making 77 runs at 12.83 in three Tests, including a first-ball duck from the opening delivery of the Ashes. And Ollie Pope, whose first-class average at the Kia Oval is currently a Bradman-esque 99.94, was relegated to 12th man duties in the Caribbean after a top score of 35 in six Ashes innings. At the age of 24, Pope’s struggles to convert his prolific county form into the England team is perhaps the most revealing evidence of the step-up in class that is now required to make the Test grade, and Stewart insisted that that need to learn on the job with England was all the more reason why it was incumbent on the selectors to keep the faith.”We’ve still got good players,” Stewart said at the Kia Oval, during Surrey’s pre-season media day. “Ollie Pope is a high-class player, but when they go up a level, it is a massive jump. The scrutiny you’re under now is even greater than it was, and that’s where you need selection to be strong. Because if you believe a player is good enough, then you need to give them a real good run.”Stewart himself is no stranger to the vagaries of England selection, having lived through the team’s struggles in the 1990s. But he believes that the heavy workloads faced by the game’s best players during his own playing days were a factor in keeping the standards constant across the first-class game.Related

Kemar Roach returns to Surrey for start of Championship campaign

“If you go back in time – and I’m not saying it was right – you used to finish your Test match and then play a county game the next day,” he said. “So the players coming through would be bowling at Graham Gooch and Mike Gatting, or they’d be facing high quality overseas bowlers.”In the 80s and 90s, there wasn’t franchise cricket around, there was no international cricket played outside of England in our summer. So you had all those great bowlers coming over to our breeding ground. Whereas now, the quality of the overseas-player availability has diminished and the best England Test players, because of the amount of Test cricket they play, are either playing [for England] or resting.”So you have to learn when you go up. You always have to improve and learn, but even more so now at the highest level, because of the hand the game has been dealt. And that’s globally, not just here.”The ECB is currently preparing to undertake a game-wide review, instigated by Andrew Strauss, the interim managing director, with the aim of redefining the game’s structure in time for the 2023 season. According to the Telegraph, proposals include a mooted 12-team Premier League, to replace the current 10-8 split across the first and second divisions, but Stewart believes that much of the criticism is the inevitable consequence of another high-profile Ashes loss.”How long has the County Championship been in place? 100 years or more?” Stewart said. “Whenever we’ve lost in Australia, which has been on numerous occasions for a long, long time, there’s always an inquest and we’re just seeing exactly the same thing, yet another inquest. When Australia lose here, they have an inquest about their Sheffield Shield.”County cricket is a breeding ground for Test cricket. Over the years it produces good players and it will continue to produce good players.””You’ve always got to earn the right to play,” he added. “But if you don’t feel a part of a set-up, you’re not going to play as a relaxed cricketer, as you would when you play for your county or your state side, because it is as much about the top two inches [the brain], as it is technically.””If you’ve been picked to be good enough for one game, then you’re good enough for a number of games, because if you’re not, then it’s not the lad’s fault. It’s the selectors’ fault.”

Fleming admits CSK's self-belief is shaken after latest drubbing

Jaffer: CSK are missing a wicket-taker in the powerplay

Chennai Super Kings have never had a worse start to their IPL campaign than the one they have made in 2022. After their fourth loss in as many games, talks have already started about what the defending champions need to do to stay alive in the tournament. On Saturday, after an eight-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, repetitive questions about what all has gone wrong for Super Kings left their head coach Stephen Fleming seemingly ticked off.Related

Bruised CSK desperate for season revival against high-flying RCB

Abhishek, Tripathi do the job as Sunrisers get on the board

Eventually, he cut it short: “I think it’s clear. Batting, bowling and fielding is what we need to work on. And moving forward we improve batting, bowling and fielding.”That reflects in the margins of defeats as well. Before their latest drubbing, Super Kings had lost two games by six wickets and one by 54 runs. In a tournament where dew has played a vital role, losing three out of four tosses hasn’t helped either.According to Fleming, not even getting close to winning has affected the self-belief of the side.”Probably each facet [of the game] is a concern, if not at one stage then altogether,” Fleming said. “We were well outplayed today. We’re sort of learning. We’ve got some issues around player availability, and in some areas a little bit underpowered, that we’re just looking for players to step up. So we’ve got some learning to do still around our players and our squad.”And we haven’t had any evidence that sort of helps the belief. We are not winning any games. Not being close to winning any games, you get a bit of self-doubt, and the players get a little bit niggly. So we just got to work through that pretty quickly and try to find some rhythm and get back in the tournament.”Super Kings were dealt a blow even before the tournament started. Deepak Chahar, their powerplay specialist whom they bought for a massive INR 14 crore (approx. US$ 1.86 million) at the mega auction, suffered a quadricep tear during the third T20I against West Indies in Kolkata. He is yet to recover. Then, Adam Milne picked up a niggle against Knight Riders in the opening game of the tournament. It’s not clear if he is available for selection.”Deepak is a loss but if I could summarise, it’s probably batting, bowling and a little bit of fielding – it’s pretty much everything,” Fleming said when asked to specify which area they are lacking in.”But it’s just pressure, we’re just not getting ourselves in positions to pressurise the opposition and we’re just coming a distant second. It takes one or two good performances and then you get a bit of belief and a bit of evidence that you’re an okay side and away you go. But at the moment, we look a long way away from that.”

£150k-p/w star out & Rashford axed: Man Utd predicted lineup & team news

Manchester United will be looking to win their first Premier League away game under Ruben Amorim when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. The 195th Manchester Derby is the blockbuster event of the weekend in the top-flight.

It is certainly a good time for the Red Devils to meet their bitter rivals. Pep Guardiola’s side have won just one game in their last ten, the most unfathomable run of form, and something United can capitalise on.

Amorim’s men themselves haven’t been in the best form, and have won three games out of six during his tenure so far. The trip to the Etihad represents a chance to turn their form around, and right some wrongs from last season.

Man United’s last trip to the Etihad Stadium

Under the tutelage of former manager Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of their arch-rivals in East Manchester. Goals from Erling Haaland and two from Phil Foden were enough to sink United.

However, it was actually United who took the lead, thanks to a phenomenal strike from homegrown hero Marcus Rashford.

The United academy graduate, who hails from Wythenshawe, smashed home a lay-off from Bruno Fernandes from well outside the area. It rifled against the crossbar and into the back of the net, leaving goalkeeper Ederson with no chance.

It was like Foden saw Rashford’s wonder strike and tried to one-up him, lashing home a fantastic strike on his left foot from distance outside the penalty area. The England international waltzed into the penalty area and fired home to give City the lead, with Haaland getting in on the act after United made a mess of things playing out from the back.

It was a very frustrating day at the office for the Red Devils, who will now be hoping they can rectify that loss last season, on Sunday afternoon under Amroim.

Man United team news vs. Man City

In terms of team news from the Red side of Manchester ahead of the derby, Amroim might well be able to count on one of his most experienced players to return to the squad. That man is Jonny Evans, who has been injured since the new manager’s first game in charge against Ipswich Town.

When quizzed about the defender in the buildup to the match, the former Sporting manager confirmed that “he’s training already”. That certainly suggests there could be some involvement for the United stalwart.

However, one player who will likely not be back in the fold for the short trip to East Manchester will be Luke Shaw. The left-back picked up an injury in the Premier League clash against Everton, and it was confirmed the £150k per week star will be unavailable on Sunday afternoon.

However, the United manager confirmed that no one else picked up any injuries in United’s last outing against Viktoria Plzen. Amorim explained United got through the trip in the Czech Republic unscathed and said “everyone is going to be fit and ready to win the game” against City.

Man United’s predicted lineup vs. Man City

It will be fascinating to see who lines up from the start for United. Of course, Andre Onana will be in goal, looking to put two errors in his last two outings behind him. Lisandro Martinez might not start as one of the three centre-backs due to a potential height mismatch against Erling Haaland so Leny Yoro could get the nod.

Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte could well pair up in midfield again, with Amad moving back to right wing-back to accommodate Mason Mount as one of the number 10s, next to Bruno Fernandes.

That leaves question marks over Rashford’s place in the side. He has struggled for form of late and could miss out on a starting berth against City, despite the fact he has six goals against them across his career, including one in his first Manchester Derby.

Man United predicted lineup in full: Onana, Yoro, De Ligt, Mazraoui; Amad, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dalot; Mount, Fernandes; Hojlund.

Forget Gyokeres: Man Utd moving to sign "one of the best CFs in the world"

The transition period between managers was always going to be a tricky one for Manchester United, especially when considering the drastic change in formation.

However, Ruben Amorim has quickly seen the issues that lie within his Red Devils squad, losing 3-2 to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

Two unforced errors from goalkeeper Andre Onana sent the club to a second consecutive Premier League defeat after losing to Arsenal just a couple of days prior.

The two defeats have seen five goals conceded, with question marks still being presented about the backline and whether it’s able to succeed under the 39-year-old’s guidance.

However, despite that, the new boss is targeting more reinforcements in attacking areas to try and bolster their threat within the final third of the pitch, with one player of interest in recent days.

Man Utd targeting move for 17-goal striker

According to reports from Caught Offside, United are in the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David after his impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign. It’s stated that talks with the player’s entourage have been held as INEOS aim to add more firepower to the squad.

However, they aren’t alone, with Arsenal also credited with an interest in signing the 24-year-old Canada international in the next couple of months.

David has registered 17 goals in all competitions so far this season, drawing huge attention, with his contract set to expire in June, which could allow for a pre-contract agreement with any of the aforementioned clubs.

It’s unclear how much a deal for the striker would cost given his contract situation, but it’s evident that from his current goalscoring figures, he would be able to provide that added quality Amorim is desiring.

It could see them delay any attempts to land a striker who’s been on the lips of many United supporters given his connection with the new manager.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

How David compares to Viktor Gyokeres in 2024/25

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres has been one of the most clinical strikers in world football over the last couple of years, producing some phenomenal stats in the process.

The Swede played under Amorim for two years in Portugal, amassing over 60 goals in the process, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League a couple of months ago.

However, any deal for the 26-year-old would be at least £60m, a fee that may be out of range for United given their recent cost-cutting efforts since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival in the North West.

As a result, David could be viewed as a cheaper alternative to Gyokeres, but one that would be just as effective, especially when delving into his figures this season, matching or bettering the former Coventry City star in various key areas.

The Canadian, who’s previously been dubbed as “one of the best strikers in the world” by journalist Tony Marinaro, may have registered slightly fewer goal contributions compared to the Swede, but he has matched him for goals per shot on target this campaign.

He’s also completed more take-ons, with a higher pass accuracy, providing a more all-round option, allowing him to feature at the top end of the pitch, but also in a slightly deeper role behind the striker.

Given his current contract option, he would be a cheap alternative to Gyokeres, but that’s not to say that he wouldn’t have the same impact as the Swede for the Red Devils.

As seen from the table, he’s clearly able to produce some bonkers numbers, in a higher quality division, potentially allowing him to seamlessly transition into life in England’s top flight.

The competition for his signature is likely to be fierce, but given Amorim’s ambitions at Old Trafford, it may be an exciting proposition for the attacker – one which he could become a key part of in the coming years should they secure his services.
