Man Utd submit offer to sign £58m ace who’s reportedly spoken to Amorim

Turning their attention towards the January transfer window in the middle of another tough spell of form, Manchester United are reportedly pressing to sign a defensive reinforcement who has already spoken to Ruben Amorim.

Man Utd transfer news

Shocked by Wolverhampton Wanderers and embarrassed by Bournemouth at Old Trafford, Manchester United desperately need the January transfer window to arrive, especially since they sit eight points clear of the dropzone in what should not even be a concern for a side of their stature heading into the second half of the season. With Newcastle United up next, however, things don’t get any easier.

Man Utd on red alert as January opportunity emerges to sign "fantastic" ace

The Red Devils could land a bargain deal…

Even in the middle of such a run, it doesn’t look as though Marcus Rashford will be granted a return after being exiled by Amorim. Yet to be impressed by the Carrington graduate, the new manager looks set to show Rashford the door and leave some of Europe’s biggest clubs circling around his signature when 2025 arrives.

Instead, the focus looks set to be on finding players who suit his 3-4-2-1 system to finally turn things around at Old Trafford, which may well see a vital defensive reinforcement arrive.

According to RMC Sport, via Sport Witness, Manchester United have submitted an opening offer to sign Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain in the winter window. SW also relayed reports from Portugal that the left-back has already spoken to Amorim in what was reportedly a convincing conversation.

Having been not impressed at PSG’s new contract proposal, Mendes’ current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2026. Whether that hands United the chance to land a cut-price deal remains to be seen, but it could certainly accelerate any transfer.

"Explosive" Mendes could be instant upgrade

A player who thrived under Amorim at Sporting Club to earn a deserved move to PSG, Mendes, valued at £58m, seemingly has the chance to work under his former manager at Manchester United in what would be the biggest move of his career yet. The left-back could be an instant upgrade too, given how well he knows the new system and how much of an attacking threat he provides compared to Diogo Dalot.

Still just 22 years old, the best is yet to come for Mendes as Manchester United look to become the ultimate benefactor in continued rise to the top of European football.

Replacing Luke Shaw feels more and more important for those at Old Trafford, with patience slowly running thin over his ability to avoid consistent injury setbacks. Dubbed “explosive” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Mendes should be high up on the list of candidates to replace the England international as early as the January transfer window.

Search for new West Indies selector begins after Sarwan exits citing 'personal reasons'

Ramnaresh Sarwan, the former West Indies captain, has relinquished his role as selector of the men’s senior and junior panel with immediate effect due to personal reasons. The resignation comes just five months into a term that was set to run until the middle of 2024.Robert Haynes, the former legspinner who currently serves as selector in the junior panel, will serve in an interim capacity in Sarwan’s place until CWI recruits another candidate “in the shortest time possible.””Given the depth of his experience in the game, we are disappointed that Ramnaresh is unable to continue in the role of selector, but we fully understand and accept his reasons,” CWI Director of Cricket and former captain Jimmy Adams was quoted as saying in a statement.”We are grateful for his contribution during the period he was involved and hope that he will be able to contribute to West Indies Cricket in some capacity in the future.”The current selection panel is headed by batting great Desmond Haynes, along with head coach Phil Simmons. CWI’s media release doesn’t state if the same candidate will occupy both senior men’s and junior selector position like Sarwan did during his short tenure. It’s a busy period for the senior men’s team, with the selection panel expected to name squads for the two T20 World Cups (2022 and 2024), ODI World Cup (2023) and the ongoing WTC cycle (2022-2024).The senior West Indies men’s team are currently in Netherlands for their first-ever ODI series against Netherlands. The series is part of the ongoing ICC ODI Super League that serves to help teams qualify directly to next year’s 50-over World Cup in India. West Indies are currently 10th in the 13-team pool. The top seven and hosts India qualify directly, while two remaining spots will be decided through the Qualifiers.

Fulham now willing to show Muniz the door to sign "great" £30m star

In quite the decision, Fulham are now reportedly willing to show Rodrigo Muniz the door to win the race to sign a £30m replacement ahead of the likes of Chelsea this month.

Fulham transfer news

The West London club have stolen the show at times in the Premier League this season, earning a point at Anfield against Liverpool and defeating Chelsea in dramatic fashion at Stamford Bridge. That said, it was Marco Silva’s side who very nearly found themselves on the wrong end of the drama against relegation contenders Ipswich Town, as three penalties between the two sides culminated in a 2-2 draw last time out.

Still sat as high as ninth nonetheless, those at Craven Cottage could yet welcome further improvements in the January transfer window, having already been linked to the likes of James McAtee from Manchester City.

Reports have even gone as far to suggest that they’re willing to pay a club-record £40m to sign the Manchester City youngster in what would be an impressive deal. But he’s not the only one they could splash out on.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Fulham are now leading the race to sign Igor Jesus who is worth as much as £30m at Brazilian side Botafogo. It has even been claimed that the Cottagers are willing to show Muniz the door in order to free up funds for the forward in a move that would see him return to Brazil as Jesus arrives in the opposite direction.

Fulham eyeing move to sign Premier League "leader" who may replace Pereira

He could arrive at a bargain price…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 2, 2025

If that is the case then Jesus is certainly a name that Fulham appreciate in abundance, given the rejuvenated form that Muniz has found himself in as of late following a slow start to the campaign.

"Great" Jesus could solve Fulham's pending problem

With Raul Jimenez now 33 years old and unlikely to stay at his current level for too much longer, Fulham’s biggest problem is arguably right around the corner. Signing Jesus at this stage could provide an instant solution, however, as they look to welcome a striker who can lead the line for years to come.

Given their willingness to part ways with Muniz too, it seems as though Fulham do not see their current Brazilian as someone who can become the main man at Craven Cottage.

Earning his first call-up to the Brazil national team back in October, before then scoring his first goal for his country, 23 year-old Jesus instantly found himself at the centre of Ben Mattinson’s praise. The analyst, almost previewing a potential move into European football, praised Jesus’ “great form” in the current campaign.

Scoring 25 goals in 56 games in all competitions in Botafogo and Shabab Al-Ahli’s last season, Jesus now seems destined for a move into Europe and perhaps to Craven Cottage in the near future.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bayern Munich supervisory board member Uli Hoeness is reportedly keen on appointing Rangnick as the club’s "mastermind," similar to Jurgen Klopp’s role as Red Bull’s Global Head of Soccer, according to . Rangnick’s expertise in scouting and youth development could benefit Bayern, while he remains a backup option for a coaching or sporting director role. Though Bayern previously considered him in February, no direct contact has been made. Despite rejecting the Bavarians last year, Rangnick maintains strong ties with key club figures.

"Ralf is the head coach in Austria. He is doing a very, very good job there," said Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund at a press conference on Friday. "I don't know if his name is floating around Sabener Strasse, in Dortmund, or at other clubs. He is very happy in Austria with the team. Fundamentally, I believe he enjoys the job a lot and feels comfortable in Austria."

Bayern Munich could find themselves competing with arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund for Rangnick, with reporting BVB’s interest. In January, he was considered a successor to head coach Nuri Sahin, even meeting Dortmund officials in Salzburg. Niko Kovac was ultimately appointed but he has struggled to make a positive impact, with the club's Bundesliga performance, where they sit 11th, threatening their European qualification for next season. Rangnick, meanwhile, is being linked to the sporting director role at the club.

    WHAT NEXT?

A year ago, Rangnick was fully committed to his role as Austria’s head coach, but reports have suggested his relationship with the Austrian Football Federation (OFB) has since deteriorated. Last autumn, there were even rumors of his resignation, and OFB President Wolfgang Bartosch recently ruled out an early contract extension, stating it’s "not an issue at the moment". Despite a strong Euro 2024 campaign, Austria failed to secure Nations League promotion, suffering a play-off defeat to Serbia in the last international break.

West Ham haven’t lost since their abject defeat away to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City at the very start of December, and have since beaten Wolves 2-1 in the ‘El Sackico’, whilst also securing 1-1 draws against both Bournemouth and Brighton.

While they were arguably fortunate to edge past Brighton with a point, they were minutes away from getting the better of an in-form Bournemouth side at the Vitality Stadium, so there are signs that momentum could be building in Lopetegui’s favour.

West Ham players are beginning to buy into Lopetegui’s methods and slowly starting to get behind the Spaniard, according to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, so this may well be reflected in their most recent run of results.

Lopetegui has a chance to further solidify his position in the Irons dugout when his side travel to St. Mary’s Stadium for their Premier League clash against struggling Southampton on Boxing Day, with the Saints recently appointing former Serie A boss Ivan Juric as their head coach to replace Russell Martin.

Juric’s arrival on the south coast has teed up this clash to be quite the intriguing encounter, and Lopetegui is certainly not underestimating the task at hand.

“There is no match in our mind other than Southampton,” said Lopetegui on Southampton ahead of their festive face-off.

“Despite being at the bottom of the table, I think they’ve shown lots of good things this season and we know it’s going to be another big challenge.

“It’s the same with every game in the Premier League – you have to be ready to face tough demands and situations, and you cannot start thinking about any of the games that come after this one.”

West Ham offered Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli

In the background, preparations for January are well underway across Europe, and it is now believed that West Ham have been offered the chance to strike a deal for Nicolo Fagioli.

The Juventus gem, rumoured to command a price tag of around £25 million, is said to be keen on a move to London above all – as intermediaries tout him around the Premier League in search of a new club.

That is according to GiveMeSport, who write that West Ham are one of the clubs who’ve been made aware of Fagioli’s availability, alongside both Crystal Palace and fierce cross-town rivals Tottenham.

The Italy international has played in all but three Serie A games under Thiago Motta for Juve this season, but the vast majority of his appearances have been from the bench, even though Ronaldo once endorsed Fagioli for having “great talent”.

“In the past Nicolò also clung on to the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo in the locker room, they had a wonderful bond,” said Fagioli’s brother, Alessandro, in an interview with Tuttosport.

“CR7 always confessed to him that he saw great talent in him. So he advised him to work twice as hard, to never give up.”

Teams with the most wins in Champions League matches since 1992/93 – list

The Champions League underwent its biggest change in format since the second group stage was scrapped ahead of the 2003/04 season, with the 2024/25 campaign seeing the introduction of the new league phase.

After 20 seasons of 32 entrants being split into eight groups of four, with the top two qualifying for the knockout phase, UEFA revamped the format, which brought about more games, rounds and drama.

Now 36 teams play in one group stage, playing eight matches rather than six in previous editions. The top eight reach the knockout stage, while those between 9th and 24th compete in a play-off to reach the last 16. The bottom eight sides are eliminated and no longer drop into the Europa League.

11 Liverpool 88 wins

Liverpool had to wait until the 2001/02 season to make their debut in the Champions League and reached the quarter-finals that season. They won the competition in 2005 after a miraculous comeback against Milan in the final, while reaching another final two years later, with the Rossoneri gaining revenge with a 2-1 win.

The Anfield side had to wait until 2018 to reach another final. Jürgen Klopp’s side lost to Real Madrid before defeating Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 to claim their sixth continental crown.

Another final loss to Madrid in 2022 is the last time they have reached this stage of the competition, earning 88 victories since 2001.

Liverpool's 9 best European nights – ranked

Liverpool have had plenty of wonderful European nights over the years.

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 27, 2024 10 Paris Saint-Germain 89 wins

The big prize has eluded Paris Saint-Germain to date, but the Parisians’ 2024/25 campaign has left them on the verge of history after being transformed under the guidance of Luis Enrique.

Despite the departure of Kylian Mbappe, PSG are in their second final, having previously finished as runners-up in 2020, where they lost 1-0 to Bayern in a behind-closed-doors finale.

PSG’s run to the 2025 final saw them rack up some wins to hurl themselves into the top 10, overtaking last-16 opponents Liverpool in the process.

9 Milan 94 wins

It may sound surprising that Milan are ranked this low, having racked up 94 wins in the competition, especially considering they have won the title on three occasions in the post-European Cup era and reached another three finals.

They failed to qualify for the competition on several occasions in recent years, which is a key reason they haven’t won as many games as the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Indeed, since winning the Champions League in 2007, Milan have reached the semi-finals only once, with Inter defeating them over two legs in 2023.

8 Arsenal 97 wins

Despite Arsenal being one of the most decorated sides in England, their record in Europe is relatively disappointing.

Indeed, since making their Champions League bow during the 1998/99 season, they have reached the final just once, in 2006.

The Gunners lost 2-1 against Barcelona in Paris as Arsène Wenger came so close to triumphing in the competition.

However, the club did have a remarkable consistency in the tournament, reaching the group stages for 17 consecutive seasons, earning 97 wins since their debut.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 17, 2024 7 Porto 101 wins

Porto were no strangers to Europe prior to the inception of the Champions League, winning the European Cup in 1987 against Bayern.

José Mourinho led them to their second continental crown in 2004, surprising the whole of Europe in the process.

Since that spectacular triumph, they have qualified for the group stage 20 times, but have yet to make it past the quarter-finals, being stopped at that particular stage on four separate occasions.

Despite this, the club have still managed to win a total of 101 games in the competition since the 1992/93 season.

6 Chelsea 101 wins

Like Liverpool, Chelsea were relative latecomers to the Champions League, having to wait until 1999 to make their debut.

The Blues suffered agonising semi-final defeats to Monaco and Liverpool in 2004 and 2005 respectively, not making their first final until 2008.

They lost to Manchester United then, but glory finally arrived four years later, defeating Bayern in their own backyard to win the tournament for the first time.

A surprising win over Manchester City in 2021 saw the Stamford Bridge side claim their second title, and they rank sixth on this list with 101 wins, coming in fewer matches (197) than Porto (228).

Todd Boehly's worst transfers at Chelsea… so far

There are plenty to choose from, but who has been Boehly’s biggest mistake at Stamford Bridge?

2 ByStephan Georgiou Aug 23, 2024 5 Juventus 114 wins

No European club has lost as many European Cup/Champions League finals as Juventus, with seven losses occurring at the last hurdle between 1973 and 2017.

Two of those losses arrived before the inception of the Champions League, but since 1993, the Old Lady have tasted defeat on no fewer than five occasions.

They won the tournament most recently in 1996, defeating holders Ajax in the final, yet lost the following two finals against Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.

It looked as though they would end that barren run in 2003, but Milan prevailed on penalties at Old Trafford. Since then, both Madrid and Barcelona have defeated the Serie A side in the showpiece event.

Despite this, they have won an impressive 114 games in the Champions League, although they would surely love to claim another title in the next few years.

Man United

It took Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson a while to get to grips with the Champions League.

Domestic dominance between 1993 and 2001 was achieved fairly easily, but Europe was a different proposition. Of course, no one will forget the stunning comeback to win the trophy in 1999 with two injury-time goals, but this was their only final between 1993 and 2007.

United won another Champions League trophy in 2008, before reaching the finals in 2009 and 2011, losing to Barcelona and Pep Guardiola each time.

Since Fergie retired, the Red Devils have qualified for Europe’s premier club competition on just seven occasions, failing to make it past the quarter-final stage.

They rank fourth on the list of most victories in the Champions League with 127.

3 Barcelona 179 wins

Barcelona won the last edition of the old European Cup in 1992, claiming the prize for the first time in their history.

Johan Cruyff’s ‘dream team’ reached the final in 1994, but were thrashed 4-0 by Milan – and this was the last time they would reach the final until 2006.

That year, they won 2-1 against Arsenal, before winning in 2009 and 2011 under the mercurial guidance of Guardiola, with Barcelona becoming one of the finest club sides of all time.

Under Luis Enrique, the La Liga side reached another final in 2015, sending Juventus packing with a 3-1 win in Berlin, giving them their fourth Champions League crown in just nine years.

They rank third in terms of victories in the tournament, racking up a staggering 179 since their first match in 1993.

2 Bayern Munich 181 wins

Bayern Munich’s tally of six continental titles ranks them as the third-best team in European Cup/Champions League history. Since the Champions League’s inception in 1992, Bayern have won three titles, although the Bavarian club have lost a further three finals.

The German side claimed the title in 2001, 2013 and 2020, but given their stature among Europe’s elite, the club should perhaps have won more, especially when Pep Guardiola took charge between 2013 and 2016.

Since their last title, Bayern have reached just one semi-final, losing to Real Madrid in 2023/24. Under Vincent Kompany, they have a vibrant, young coach who has plenty of ambition, but they bowed out in his first season at the quarter-final stage.

They rank second on the all-time victory list in the competition, recording 181 since their first match in 1994.

'Haven't received the receipt!' – Cole Palmer ignites cold war with Valencia star Diego Lopez after trying to trademark iconic goal celebration

Cole Palmer has ignited a cold war with Valencia star Diego Lopez after trying to trademark his iconic "cold" goal celebration.

Palmer has found himself at the centre of a growing controversy after attempting to trademark his signature "cold" celebration – a gesture he has made his own since bursting onto the Premier League scene with Chelsea. The move, however, has not gone down well with Valencia winger Diego Lopez, who insists he was performing the same celebration long before Palmer made it mainstream.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The dispute dates back to when Palmer officially submitted an application to the European Union Intellectual Property Office to secure exclusive rights to the celebration. At the time, his decision followed a trend among high-profile players, including Jude Bellingham, who also sought to trademark his personal goal celebration.

But Lopez, who has been showcasing the same "cold" stance on the pitch since as early as 2022, has repeatedly made his discontent public. He even posted a photo of himself on Christmas Day last year doing the now-contentious celebration well before Palmer’s first appearance with it in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Luton Town back in December 2023.

WHAT LOPEZ SAID

Speaking to Spanish media outlet , Lopez addressed the ongoing saga with a hint of sarcasm and defiance.

“I haven’t received the receipt yet… I don’t know if it’s because he doesn’t have my address, because they haven’t given it to him or why," he said. "If you want, I can explain that I have been doing this celebration for four years and I will continue to do it. In fact, I hope to do it more often because it will mean that I have scored a lot of goals.”

Adding fuel to the fire is Lopez’s current run of form. The 22-year-old has scored four times in his last four outings for Valencia, using the same celebration on each occasion.

32 y/o Sheffield Wednesday promotion-winner now wants to leave in January

A Sheffield Wednesday player who was key in them earning promotion back to the Championship now wants to leave the club in the January transfer window, according to a new claim.

Latest Sheffield Wednesday news

The Owls trade league commitments for FA Cup duties on Saturday evening, making the trip to Coventry City for an all-Championship clash in the third round.

Admittedly, the competition doesn’t take preference this season, with Wednesday instead hoping to mount a genuine playoff charge, sitting 10th in the table with 20 more matches remaining this season. Last weekend’s disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Millwall saw sloppy points dropped, but Danny Rohl’s side are still in a good position.

The current transfer window could give the Owls a chance to bolster their squad, should Rohl feel like added reinforcements will improve his team’s chance of returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2000. One report has claimed that they have made a move for Brisbane Roar attacker Thomas Waddingham, who has been described as a “teen sensation”.

On the flip side, however, there is the threat that Wednesday could lose key players before the end of the month, and a new update has suggested exactly that.

Influential Sheffield Wednesday stalwart wants to leave

According to a new report from Football Insider, Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Michael Ihiekwe is “keen” to leave the club this month, amid “interest” from clubs in both the Championship and League One.

The 32-year-old is said to be “in search of regular first-team football”, having drifted down the defensive pecking order under Rohl this season. The Owls are “open” to allowing him to leave, feeling as though they have enough depth in that area of the pitch.

Whether or not Rohl is happy to see Ihiekwe leave remains to be seen, or if it’s just those high up at the club, but losing him would affect Wednesday’s squad depth between now and the end of the season.

The veteran defender has been an impressive servant since arriving at Hillsborough from Rotherham United in 2022, helping the Owls seal promotion back to the Championship in his first season, following the memorable League One playoff victories against Peterborough United and Barnsley.

Granted, Ihiekwe has only managed three starts in the league so far this season, seeing his playing time limited, but he has so often been a dependable performer, with journalist Alex Miller saying of one display: “There is a couple of moments that could have got hairy early doors. Threw his body at the cause on more than one occasion, a block on 68 minutes vital. A warrior on an afternoon that needed them.”

Championship Table: Latest standings for the 2024/25 season

There is a risk element in allowing Ihiekwe to leave, unless a direct replacement is brought in, but if he wants a new challenge at this stage in his career, it does also make sense to allow him to move on.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mourinho has repeatedly caused controversy in his first season at Fenerbahce, with Galatasaray previously accusing him of making "racist statements". The ex-Chelsea boss, who received a four-game ban earlier this season, then sued the Turkish giants and now he is potentially in trouble again. This latest incident has reportedly led many fans to call on him to resign.

Abola adds that if Mourinho's actions are considered an 'attack', Article 44 of the Turkish Football Disciplinary Regulations decrees that an offending party can be banned for five to 10 games.
