Após o intervalo, a desatenção do sistema defensivo corintiano custou caro, e dessa vez o Coritiba conseguiu superar Cássio e igualar o placar.

What do CSK and Delhi Capitals need to qualify for the playoffs?

The Super Kings play two of their last three games in Chennai, while DC’s last four games are against two teams

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2023Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings are relatively comfortably placed in second place, on 13 points after 11 games and with a healthy net run rate too. In an extreme case, even if they lose all three remaining matches, they could still be battling for fourth spot if other results go their way.Obviously, though, they will be aiming for a much better finish to the league stage than that. Two wins in these three games will surely be enough to qualify, while one win and 15 points could suffice too if other results go their way.The advantage for Super Kings is that they are playing two of their three remaining games in Chennai. They only have a 3-2 home record this season, but having home games in hand towards the end of the league stage is still an advantage. Two of their remaining games are against bottom-of-the-table Delhi Capitals, but that is no longer an advantage: Capitals are on a roll at the moment, having won four of their last five matches.Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals’ schedule is an odd one: they have four matches to go, but they play only two teams, Super Kings and Punjab Kings. In last place at the moment, Capitals need to win at least three of their last four games to stand a chance: with 14 points they could still finish among the top four even without net run rates, if several other results go their way.On the other hand, even if they win all four and finish on 16, they still won’t be assured of qualification as four other teams could also finish on 16 or more points. Which means that along with win, Capitals will also have to focus on the winning margins: their NRR of -0.529 is currently the poorest among all teams.

MS Dhoni: 'Pathirana shouldn't even get close to red-ball cricket'

“He will serve for a very long time for Sri Lankan cricket, but we’ll have to keep an eye on how much he bowls”

Moody: ‘Pathirana completely shut the door on Mumbai’s power-hitters’

Matheesha Pathirana “shouldn’t even get close” to red-ball cricket, in the opinion of MS Dhoni, his captain at Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023.Pathirana, a new-gen version of Lasith Malinga, has emerged as one of the aces in Dhoni’s pack in the IPL, and picked up three wickets for just 15 runs against Mumbai Indians at Chepauk on Saturday, bowling all his overs in the back-half of the innings.”I personally think he is not someone who should play a lot of red-ball cricket,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation, almost like a plea to the powers-that-be in Sri Lankan cricket. “I think he shouldn’t even get close to it. Even in white-ball cricket, the 50-over version he should play as less as possible. [He should] play the big ICC tournaments because he is not somebody who will change a lot. This [having an impact in short bursts] is what he will do, so you can always use him at crucial times.Related

“But make sure that he is fit and available for all ICC tournaments and he will be a great asset for Sri Lanka. Not to forget, he is a really young boy. Last time [in 2022], when he came, he was slightly more lean, but he has added muscle, which means he has got pretty strong. I feel he will serve for a very long time for Sri Lankan cricket, but we’ll have to keep an eye on how much he bowls.”Pathirana was unsold in the auction ahead of IPL 2022, but was drafted in by CSK after Adam Milne was ruled out with a hamstring injury.Last season, he had played two games for CSK, picking up two wickets. This time, he has played seven games, in which he has picked up ten wickets – all at the death – at an economy rate of 7.60, the last number made even more remarkable by the fact that he has bowled only four of his 27.2 overs this season before the 12th.”People who don’t have very clean [conventional] action, batsmen find it difficult to pick them – in a format like this, where you have to go after the bowler, it makes it slightly difficult,” Dhoni said. “That is just on the action part, we are not talking about the pace that he bowls [at], the variations he has and the consistency he has got. All of it makes him special. What is important is to keep an eye on how much cricket he is playing.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Dhoni wanted to bat but was ‘outnumbered’It was CSK’s third win in five games at Chepauk this season, but only the second 3.30pm game that was played at the venue. With rain forecast for the evening, Dhoni said he was not sure about his decision at the toss but went with the view of the majority of the CSK think tank and chose to field.”Frankly I was slightly doubtful. What I wanted was I wanted to bat first. But the think tank together said there are chances of rain,” he said. “I had a simple calculation. I said 3:30pm the game starts. Let’s say you win the toss and if you are batting first, maximum in one-and-a-half to two hours the game gets over. By the time rain comes, major part of the game would be done with. I was slightly outnumbered, and I said let’s go with the majority.”If there is some kind of confusion, we sit and talk about [it]. It is not about who has said what. Ultimately, we try to decide what is best for the team and you go with the majority. It was slightly confusing because I felt the wicket will slow down and it has always been very good initially to bat on. So I strongly felt that even if rain comes, majority of the game will be done and it won’t have an impact on the game directly.”CSK have two more home games left – against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders – and an away game in Delhi to end the league stage.

Varun and Suyash wreck RCB's chase again

It took Kolkata Knight Riders eight games to finally produce a cohesive team performance. They excelled with bat and ball, and were the better team in the field too, as they achieved only their third win of the season. It was the perfect way for them to start the second half of the league stage, beating Royal Challengers Bangalore for the second time in the season.KKR’s win was set up by their new opener Jason Roy, who laid the base for their total of 200 by smacking 56 off 29 balls. Nitish Rana pumped 48 off 21 to keep the momentum going through the middle overs, and Rinku Singh (18 off 10) and David Wiese (12 off 3) put on the finishing touches.RCB’s chase, though, was on while Virat Kohli was out there. He scored 54 off 37 to keep them on course. However, regular wickets from Suyash Sharma, Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russell kept pegging them back, and RCB eventually ran out of gas and fell 21 short.

Suyash, Varun pull it back for KKR

Kohli and Faf du Plessis hammered 30 runs in two overs from Vaibhav Arora and Umesh Yadav to start the chase, forcing Rana to bring on spin in the third over. He chose to go to his least experienced spinner – Suyash Sharma – ahead of Sunil Narine and Varun, and was rewarded with du Plessis holing out to long on second ball. While Kohli kept finding the boundary, he failed to find support in the powerplay with Shahbaz Ahmed falling lbw to Suyash, while Glenn Maxwell holed out off Varun. With RCB three down in the powerplay, Kohli and Mahipal Lomror stabilised the chase by running hard and taking on Sunil Narine.Jason Roy gave KKR a fabulous start•Associated Press

Rana then went back to Varun, who had Lomror caught in the deep, and when Kohli was superbly caught on 54 by Venkatesh Iyer, diving to his left at deep midwicket in the 13th over, KKR were decidedly ahead in the contest. The dismissals of Wanindu Hasaranga and Dinesh Karthik in the space of four balls ensured RCB had no way back and Kohli, who was standing in as captain for du Plessis once again, said they had “gifted” the victory to KKR.

Rana makes RCB pay

Kohli’s scathing post-game comments were largely because of RCB’s fielding. They put down a tough caught-and-bowled chance off Roy, but it was the two reprieves that Rana received that really cost RCB. According to ESPNcricinfo’s Luck Index the two drops, by Mohammed Siraj in the 13th over and Harshal Patel in the 15th, cost RCB a total of 29 runs.

Roy fined for breaching Code of Conduct

KKR opening batter Jason Roy has been fined 10 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. It appeared that he hit the bails with his bat after he was dismissed by Vijaykumar Vyshak. He admitted to the Level 1 offence, where the Match Referee’s decision is final.

The first chance came when Rana was on 5 off 5 deliveries and then second when he was on 19 off 12. He ended up scoring 48 off 21 balls. Rana’s innings included three fours and four sixes and it allowed KKR to wrest the momentum after sluggish innings from N Jagadeesan and Venkatesh.

Roy sets Knight Riders up

It was Roy’s innings, however, that set the tone for KKR’s night. After struggling for runs from their opening partnership all season, KKR finally had a strong start and it was all Roy. He smashed four sixes in the fifth over from left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed to power them to 66 for 0 in the powerplay. So even though Vijaykumar Vyshak dismissed N Jagadeesan and Roy in the same over, KKR had a platform to build on, and this time Rana and the rest ensured that it was not wasted.

Ange can forget about Kulusevski by unleashing "incredible" Spurs star

After succumbing to their first Premier League defeat since January last time out, Tottenham Hotspur return to Europa League action tonight.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have endured a torrid year on the domestic front this season, but they have looked far more dangerous in European competition.

The North Londoners finished the league stage of the competition in fourth place, with five wins, two draws and just a single defeat to their name, allowing them to bypass the play-off round altogether.

However, things can never be easy for the Lilywhites, as they will have to take on AZ Alkmaar without the sensational Dejan Kulusevski – although Ange may have just the solution within his squad.

Why Kulusevski can't play against AZ Alkmaar

He has had impressive campaigns in the past, but it would probably be fair to describe this season as Kulusevski’s best in a Spurs shirt.

Despite moving between playing on the wing and in the middle of the park, the Swedish international has remained remarkably effective for much of the year.

In just 42 appearances, totalling 3054 minutes, the Stockholm-born dynamo has scored ten goals and provided ten assists.

That means the former Juventus ace has averaged a goal involvement every 2.1 games, or every 152.7 minutes, so the news that he’s now out injured is a real problem.

When speaking to the press yesterday afternoon, Postecoglou confirmed that the 24-year-old had a “knock on the foot” and that while it’s “nothing serious” he is “unlikely to be back before the international break.”

It’s not an ideal situation ahead of a crucial knockout game, but fortunately, there is an incredibly talented player within the squad who should be able to cover for his output in the middle of the park.

The Spurs star who can cover for Kulusevski

For once, it feels as if Postecoglu has a few options for how to cover for an injured player, but to ensure his side remain a serious attacking threat, there is only one answer: James Maddison.

Behind the former Juve star, there is a strong argument that the Englishman is the squad’s most creative and dangerous midfielder, so keeping him in the lineup in light of the news around the Swede makes perfect sense to us.

Moreover, while the former Leicester City star can run hot and cold at times, he’s actually been reasonably effective this season.

In his 34 appearances so far, totalling just 2039 minutes, the “incredible” ace, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored ten goals and provided seven assists.

That means he’s currently averaging a goal involvement every other game, or every 119.94 minutes, which is actually quite a bit better than Kulusevski.

On top of that, FBref has placed him in the top 1% of Premier League midfielders for actual and expected non-penalty goals, the top 5% for assists and progressive passes, the top 3% for shot-creating actions and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, not having Kulusevski fit for selection is undoubtedly an issue, but in Maddison, Spurs have an incredibly dynamic midfielder who can come in and make up for his absence.

West Brom must rue losing amazing loan star who's now outperforming Fellows

With four wins and three draws next to their name from their last seven Championship matches, Tony Mowbray’s West Bromwich Albion find themselves grasping onto the final playoff spot in the ultra competitive division.

Indeed, despite their positive recent patch of form, the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Watford are still loitering close behind both on 52 points, whilst the Baggies’ nearest challengers in both Middlesbrough and Bristol City are on 54 points and 57 points respectively.

West Brom’s heftier goal difference means they sit in sixth over the Robins, with Mowbray wanting more from the likes of Tom Fellows in crunch Championship contests to follow, aware that the homegrown gem’s form has dipped slightly.

Tom Fellows' dip in form at West Brom

Across the unbeaten stretch of results West Brom are currently experiencing, Fellows has only managed to pick up one paltry assist.

The last seven clashes in the league has seen very little come off for the usually electric 21-year-old – away from helping Adam Armstrong net against Sheffield Wednesday – resulting in Mowbray dropping the hot-and-cold number 31 from his starting lineups here and there.

Taking Fellows out of the main team would have been completely unfathomable earlier in the campaign, with the Solihull-born winger racing to 11 assists in second tier action when regularly linking up with a now injury-stricken Josh Maja, alongside also picking up two goals for his troubles.

A reported move to Everton could still be on the cards when the next transfer window rolls around, but there is one former loanee who is now managing to outperform the out-of-sorts attacker…

The former West Brom loanee outperforming Fellows

Sometimes, a player doesn’t instantly become a success during the infancy of their playing days. Rather, the star in question ends up being a late bloomer that eventually explodes into life.

Jacob Murphy falls into this bracket of players who have managed to age like a fine wine, with the now Newcastle United ace outperforming Fellows across 2024/25 to date, after a slightly unmemorable loan stint in the West Midlands.

Looking at the table above, Murphy has managed to come on leaps and bounds since his stint at the Hawthorns, with the 30-year-old attacker worth just £5m – as per Transfermarkt – when lining up for the Baggies, having only mustered up three goal contributions from 15 clashes.

Now, the ex-Norwich City man has hit his peak in Howe’s camp, with Fellows’ 13 goal contributions for the campaign bettered by Murphy reaching 15 from 31 games.

To make his sublime season even better, Murphy would also manage to lift the EFL Cup proudly against Liverpool, having bagged one goal and two assists in the competition to get his team to that famous showdown at Wembley.

Murphy’s value – as per Transfermarkt – has also now risen all the up to a bumper £13m subsequently, representing a large £8m increase from his far lesser price-tag when he was still attempting to make a name for himself as an eager loanee.

Now, the “relentless” winger – as he’s been lauded by football journalist Chris Waugh in the past – very much has a home to call his own in St James’ Park, away from his former loan employers now desperately trying to reach Murphy’s level.

Approach made: West Ham now make first move for "remarkable" £44m striker

West Ham United have now initiated first contacts over a summer deal for a “remarkable” striker, who is attracting a lot of attention from the Premier League, according to a report.

Hammers lacking an out-and-out striker

Back-to-back wins against Arsenal and Leicester City at the end of February have almost certainly staved off any lingering fears about relegation, with Jarrod Bowen bagging the only goal of the game to secure an impressive 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

However, the Hammers have since gone on to score just one goal in their last two games, with Graham Potter having to make do without an out-and-out striker, given that Niclas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio are out injured.

As such, while Bowen is enjoying another impressive season in front of goal, Potter has identified the need to bring in a new striker this summer, and Strasbourg’s Emanuel Emegha is among the targets, having regularly been amongst the goals in Ligue 1 this term.

Potter has also told the West Ham board he wants them to sign Lille’s Jonathan David, but with Arsenal and Barcelona in the race for the Canadian’s signature, it could be difficult to get a deal done, and the manager may have to move on to other targets.

One option could be Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, with a report from Italy revealing the Hammers have now initiated first contacts over a deal for the Italian, but there may be fierce competition for his signature.

Fiorentina'sMoiseKeancelebrates after the match

A number of Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in Kean, including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, although the transfer is still in the preliminary stages.

Fiorentina are protected by a €52m (£44m) release clause in the striker’s contract, but it is unclear whether they would insist on receiving the full amount.

Kean enjoying "remarkable" Serie A campaign

It is clear to see why some top Premier League clubs are coming forward for the Italy international, given his extremely impressive record in front of goal this season.

CBS’s Marco Messina has also lauded the Fiorentina marksman for his “remarkable” all-round performances, suggesting he offers a lot more to his team than merely goals.

That said, while the former Everton man was undefeated against West Ham during his time with the Toffees, there will still be concern about his previous stint in the Premier League.

Kean scored just four goals in 39 games for Everton, and while it is clear he has made improvements to his game since then, his goal record in England casts doubt over whether a £44m fee is justifiable.
