The Premier League announced the schedule for the 2025-26 campaign on Wednesday. The season will kick off on August 15 with reigning champions Liverpool taking on Bournemouth. The highlight of the opening game week, however, will be the high-octane clash between Manchester United and Arsenal on August 17. Once the schedule was out, fans were quick to spot that not a single game was scheduled for Boxing Day, contrary to tradition.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE EXPLAINATION

Explaining the lack of games, the Premier League reiterated its commitment to giving players ample rest during the busy month of December, although it did hint at shifting a couple of fixtures to December 26 for live broadcast. A statement from the league read: "In keeping with our commitment to providing a greater rest period over the Christmas and New Year period, no club will be requested to play less than 48 hours between Match Rounds 18 and 19 (December 27 and December 30).

"Matches in Round 18 (December 27) are available for movement to Boxing Day for live broadcast selection. Each club has a home match on either 27 December or 3 January, with travel reduced on 27 December and 30 December."

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Fans vented their frustrations at the decision on social media, with the age-old tradition of a packed Boxing Day schedule effectively scrapped.

X handle HLTCO wrote: "The game actually is gone this time."

Billy Dunmore posted: "This is quite honestly and sincerely a f*cking massive disgrace."

A fan with the handle @Salahenjoyer11 wrote: "Na my beautiful sport is gone."

Manchester United fan Mark Goldbridge wrote: "No Boxing Day fixtures in the Prem this year….they're changing the game. Another tradition gone."

Ade Met wrote: "Hope it gets moved. It’s actually irritating to have two home fixtures within a few days after Xmas. My daughter will miss both and she’s gutted!"

Neil Wagner joins Somerset for Championship run-in

Somerset have signed New Zealand bowler Neil Wagner for the final three rounds of the LV= Insurance County Championship.Wagner had been due to play for Yorkshire this summer but suffered a torn hamstring and a bulging disc in his back while playing a Test against Sri Lanka in March. He has previously turned out for Essex, Lancashire and Northamptonshire in county cricket.Somerset had enjoyed the services of Matt Henry and Peter Siddle as overseas players during the first half of the season but both have now finished their spells at the club.”We have been working extremely hard to secure the services of a quality international bowler for the last three red-ball fixtures of the season,” Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, said. “Neil is a proven performer at the very highest level and has vast experience as well as a thorough understanding of Championship cricket.”He is a real competitor, and alongside our other highly rated bowlers, we believe we have the capability to consistently take 20 wickets as we enter the final phase of the Championship season.”Somerset are currently fifth in Division One of the Championship, with Wagner set to be available for their trip to Southampton on September 3.Wagner said: “I’m looking forward to joining up with Somerset and hopefully I can help them finish the season strongly. Newcastle now in race for "world-class" £38m striker who may replace Isak

Newcastle United are now in the race to sign a “world-class” striker who is ready to leave his current club this summer, according to a report.

Isak speculation rumbles on

Alexander Isak’s heroics at Wembley won’t be forgotten in a hurry, with the Swedish striker playing a major role in ending Newcastle’s 70-year trophy drought, but speculation about his future continues to rumble on as we edge closer to the summer transfer window.

Arsenal are set to make an “important” proposal to sign the forward, as revealed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, and there have been suggestions the 25-year-old has now expressed a desire to move to the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season.

With the former Real Sociedad man contracted until 2028, there is little reason to sanction a departure this summer, unless a transfer request is handed in, but that does not seem particularly likely given that he has stated how much he loves the club and city.

Newcastle and PIF in contact to sign "incredible" £33m+ PL star for Howe

Eddie Howe is eyeing a deal for an in-form star once the transfer window opens.

However, Eddie Howe must plan for the worst-case scenario, and a report from Italy has now revealed that Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic could be brought in to replace Isak this summer, having now decided it is best if he parts ways with the Italian club.

Vlahovic’s wage demands are too high for the Serie A side, and with the forward unwilling to accept a lower salary, it appears as though he could be heading for the exit door, having also had tension with manager Thiago Motta.

Dusan Vlahovic in action with Genoa'sKoniDeWinter

A move to the Premier League could be on the cards for the Serbian, with a fee of around €40m – €45m (£33m – £38m) touted, and Newcastle are ones to watch in the transfer race, although Manchester United and Arsenal are also in the picture.

Vlahovic likely to be downgrade on Isak

The 25-year-old is enjoying a decent season in front of goal in Italy, netting 14 goals in all competitions, however, Newcastle’s talisman is outscoring him by some distance, having bagged 19 goals in the Premier League alone.

As such, while Serie A writer Siavoush Fallahi has lauded the former Fiorentina man as “world-class” in the past, he is likely to be a downgrade on Isak, much like almost any striker being linked with a move to St. James’ Park.

The Newcastle star underlined his importance to the team with his magnificent performance at Wembley last time out, scoring the second in the 2-1 victory, and Howe will be hoping he is eager to compete for more trophies at St. James’ Park.

With Callum Wilson’s contract set to expire this summer, Howe may need to bring in a new reinforcement at striker, but unless Vlahovic is willing to play second fiddle to Isak, a move for the Juventus striker isn’t in Newcastle’s best interests.

Williamson has two weeks to prove fitness for ODI World Cup

Jimmy Neesham has been withdrawn from the T20I squad to return home for the birth of his first child

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2023Kane Williamson has two weeks to prove his fitness for the ODI World Cup after he linked up with the New Zealand squad in England to continue his rehab from the ACL injury picked up at the IPL.When Williamson suffered the injury in April he was viewed as only a very slim chance of making the World Cup, but his progress in recent weeks has been encouraging and he will be given every opportunity to prove he is ready. The 15-player squads need to be submitted to the ICC by September 5 but can be changed without approval up to September 28.Related

“[We’ve] got about two weeks from now until we name that side,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. “Going to give him every chance and use that full amount of time.”He’s in full rehab mode, he’s back batting in the nets again which is great to see. He’s progressing really well but again there’s a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets to where we need him to be.”It could be that Williamson will be included even if he won’t be ready for the early matches in the World Cup, or another option could be to have him as one of the travelling reserves although there would then need to be an injury in the original squad for him to be brought in. There will also be longer-term considerations taken into account.”They are all the things we are weighing up right now,” Stead said. “There’s a chance that even if Kane was named that he wouldn’t be available right at the start of the tournament. But he also might be, and he also might not be ready.”It’s still a little bit of crystal-ball gazing [about] where he will be at. Yes, of course, we want him at the World Cup but there is that bigger picture in mind that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career.”They’ll be honest conversations that Kane and I will have with each other around exactly where he is at, to make sure we get the best outcome for our team but also the best outcome for Kane Williamson and his long-term career.”Meanwhile, Jimmy Neesham has been withdrawn from the T20I squad for the series against England so he can return home early ahead of the birth of his first child. Cole McConchie will now remain on the tour.”The birth of a child is a special time and we are a family environment,” Stead said. “We are glad to be able to support Jimmy in heading home.”Neesham played two of the T20Is against UAE in Dubai before taking up a brief Hundred deal with Oval Invincibles who he helped to the title on Sunday with an unbeaten 57 off 33 balls, adding 127 with Tom Curran after the team had been 34 for 5.

Shreyas Iyer, who is currently part of a six-day conditioning camp in Bengaluru for India’s Asia Cup-bound squad, admits to “panicking” about his back injury and that he “never imagined” he would recover so fast.Iyer’s injury flared up after the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test against Australia in March. Initially, he was understood to have been keen on exploring non-surgical options to manage the issue to try and be available for at least the second half of IPL 2023. However, “excruciating pain” arising from a slipped disc forced him to reassess, keeping in mind the “long years” he had ahead of him as an athlete.”I had this issue for a while, but I was taking injections and going through various routes to see to it that I am steady and playing many more matches,” Iyer told the BCCI website. “But it reached a saturation point where I realised that ‘okay, now I have to get a surgery.’ And the physios and the experts, the back experts, told me that it’s important you go under the knife and get this done with.Related

“To be precise, I had this nerve compression, basically a slipped disc which was compressing the nerve and the pain was going all the way to the bottom of my tiny toe. It was horrendous, to be honest. At that point in time, I was in excruciating pain. I wasn’t able to express myself properly as to what I was going through.Iyer underwent surgery in London in April and stayed back for three weeks so that the doctors there could monitor his progress, before checking into the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for a three-month rehab. That process ended last week when Nitin Patel, the head of NCA’s medical staff, gave Iyer the final go-ahead after a series of practice matches.”It was a roller-coaster ride, to be honest,” Iyer said. “The pain was there until three months [ago], and then after that, it started subsiding. But at the same time, the physios were focused on getting the range back – of my hamstring, glutes and everything.”When you’re going through rehab as a professional athlete, it is tough when the pain is not subsiding. Thankfully, I had a great set of friends around me, the support staff, and also my family. They were the ones who calmed me down. I was panicking as well, but patience is key at this point of time. So yeah, I’m truly happy to be where I am right now, because I never imagined I would recover so fast.”During the rehab phase, Iyer admits to being overwhelmed. But in the end, the work he put in paid off to the extent that he was “surprised” at his scores in the yo-yo test, which involves high-intensity sprints over a set distance.”The testing phase was the toughest period to go through,” he said. “The physios and trainers were pretty confident of me coming back strong. But in my mind, I could feel the pain. I was pretty oblivious at that point of time, [to] whether I would pass the test or not. But over a period of time, I realised pain was subsiding and strength was improving in my legs.”Gradually, we started doing some running sessions. The first running session was extremely tough and I was a bit perplexed at that point of time as to what would happen. In the second session, I was progressing. I did some trial yo-yo tests, and after some time, I played a match and then I was gaining that momentum. In the yo-yo test, I surprised myself as well.”As he gears up to reclaim his No. 4 spot in the ODI set-up, which will help him make a pitch for a maiden World Cup berth, Iyer is focused on staying in the present and not worrying about the baggage of the past.”I am happy being where I am. I am ticking all boxes day by day in terms of preparation. I had a fantastic two days of practice with the boys. It was competitive and I’m happy to be here, embracing each and every moment.”

Spin-heavy England Lions to go to UAE keeping India Test tour in mind

The ECB has announced a spin-heavy England Lions training squad for a winter training camp in the UAE next month. Ten players have been drafted into the second-tier set-up for the first time. With the England men’s Test side travelling to India for a five-match series in January, eight spinners have been selected for this trip. These include Leicestershire’s Rehan Ahmed, who made his Test debut against Pakistan last winter, and Middlesex offspinner Josh De Caires, earning his first Lions call after taking 27 Division One wickets at 25.59.Other notable inclusions are Tom Lawes, whose 30 dismissals helped Surrey to the County Championship, and Somerset’s James Rew, who struck five centuries among 1086 runs, which earned him the PCA Young Player of the Year award. Fast bowlers Matthew Fisher, Matthew Potts, Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse, all of whom have international caps to their name, will also attend the camp, which runs from November 16 to December 7.The aim of the three weeks is as much to reward performances over the last season as it is to understand the depth of England’s pathway. Those selected are deemed “high potential players” and will focus primarily on developing red-ball skills, closely aligned to England’s future requirements ahead of the subcontinent tour at the start of 2024. Lancashire’s Tom Hartley and Sussex’s Jack Carson – left-arm orthodox and offbreak bowlers, respectively – are two such players who could be considered for the Test tour. Hartley made his England debut during the recent ODI series with Ireland, while Carson took 31 wickets this season. The focus on spinners in the short term is vital given the lack of options following Moeen Ali’s Test retirement at the end of the Ashes, and with Adil Rashid focussing solely on white-ball cricket. Lead spinner Jack Leach is continuing his recovery from a back stress fracture sustained at the start of the summer.Players and counties were consulted around selection, with several players not selected either because of pre-existing commitments or other opportunities overseas deemed more beneficial to their individual needs.England men’s performance director Mo Bobat said, “At the end of an enjoyable season and after close dialogue with players and counties, it’s exciting to confirm our group that will travel to Abu Dhabi for a training camp later this year.”The camp will provide an excellent opportunity for the players to develop their red ball game and allow us to learn more about them as people and players.”In selecting the group, we’ve carefully considered England’s short and long-term needs in Test cricket, particularly with sub-continent challenges in mind.”It’s quite a large group and it’s great that we can support player development in this way for what should be a fun camp.”The coaching and mentoring group accompanying the party will be announced in due course.England Lions training group: Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire), George Balderson (Lancashire), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Josh Bohannon (Lancashire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Jack Carson (Sussex), James Coles (Sussex), Josh De Caires (Middlesex), Matthew Fisher (Yorkshire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Lyndon James (Nottinghamshire), Tom Lawes (Surrey), Dan Mousley (Warwickshire), Callum Parkinson (Durham), Matthew Potts (Durham), Rishi Patel (Leicestershire), Ollie Price (Gloucestershire), James Rew (Somerset), Ollie Robinson (Durham), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), John Turner (Hampshire)
