Tamim: 'After the last two months, I had nerves going out to bat'

The Bangladesh batter says he still has a “lot of discomfort” in his back, but is hoping the physios will overcome it soon

Mohammad Isam24-Sep-2023Bangladesh’s batting crisis continued as they succumbed to a 86-run defeat against New Zealand in the second ODI in Dhaka. But the return of Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah will be encouraging, as both looked sharp although they couldn’t kick on after getting starts. Mahmudullah top-scored with 49 before hitting Cole McConchi’s long hop to short fine-leg; Tamim had earlier gloved while trying a lap-sweep against Ish Sodhi after making 44.Mahmudullah was playing his first ODI since early March, when he was part of the squad for the three-match ODI series against England. The national selectors had initially said that they were resting him but it was clear for the next six months that they were moving on from Mahmudullah. But with the World Cup looming and Bangladesh’s batting proving to be inconsistent, the selectors had to give Mahmudullah another chance ahead of the major event in India.Related

Tamim meanwhile had missed most of the Afghanistan series in July, amid his retirement U-turn. He also missed the Asia Cup through a long-standing back injury. Tamim admitted that his return to action was a nervous one, especially with the bat, but once he timed a few shots, he felt better.”I was nervous today. I will be lying if I said it was just another game,” he said. “Whatever has happened in the last couple of months, I had nerves going out to bat. But after the first over, it came down. It was nice to hit the balls again. I think it was good to be out there but there’s certainly still a lot of discomfort in my back. The physios are trying to overcome it.”Mahmudullah also took a bit of time to settle down, but he was forceful through all the wickets that fell at the other end. Tamim said that Mahmudullah reacted well to the situation when he came out to bat when they were 70 for 4.”I thought he was excellent. I was in a small partnership with him. His intent looked really good. I didn’t feel he was out for six or seven months. He looked good. He fielded well.”Tamim felt that though Bangladesh could have kept New Zealand down to 200 or 210, the pitch was good enough to chase down the 255-run target, urging the team to take a serious look at their top-order collapses. Only once in the last seven innings have Bangladesh gone past 100 runs before losing four wickets.”This run chase was gettable on this wicket. I think we could have restricted them around 210-215. But this was a good wicket. I don’t think we got out to really good deliveries.”We have to look into (losing four wickets early) very seriously going into the World Cup. We can’t win a lot of games if we lose four or five wickets quickly. We lost early wickets but there were good patches today. But to win any game, you have to stop this (collapse). We have to look to minimise back-to-back wickets. The coach and captain aren’t the only ones in charge of this, the responsibility is among all of us.”

Ligue 1 outfit Lyon have announced Michele Kang as their new chairwoman and CEO of the Eagle Football Group and the club, with former president and general manager Textor resigning from his leadership roles, including the board of directors. The changes come in the wake of a fan protest calling for the American investor to leave the club days after they were ordered to drop to the second tier.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Earlier in June, the National Control and Management Directorate (DNCG), French football’s economic watchdog, decided to relegate the seven-time Ligue 1 champions to the second tier, citing they had not done enough to improve their financial situation. Before Textor took over the club, Lyon had spent heavily on infrastructure, including the Groupama Stadium, but the Covid-19 pandemic and poor performances on the pitch affected them financially, and they had to rely on player sales.

They raised funds by selling their women’s team to Kang, who herself is a businesswoman, and also sanctioned the sale of the LDLC Arena. However, they continued to spend large sums on transfers, gradually increasing their debt to €505m ($593m/£507m) last November, compelling the DNCG to relegate them and also imposing a transfer ban for the January window. After conducting an audit of their finances, the DNCG instructed them to improve their balance sheet by the end of the 2024-25 season. Textor stated that they had to overcome a deficit worth €100m ($117m/£85.5m) and requested to stay in Ligue 1. Player sales followed, with Rayan Cherki making a move to Manchester City this summer and the club offloading a few out-of-contract players; a spot in the Europa League helped too, showcasing a slight improvement. However, DNCG were not convinced and stood firm with their order.

  • WHAT KANG AND TEXTOR SAID

After accepting the new role, Kang stated: "We are entering a critical moment for OL and I want to thank John for his commitment and vision in bringing the club into the Eagle Football family. I look forward to working closely with Michael, OL management team, and the Board as we focus on supporting the club through the DNCG process and beyond."

Textor said: "I am extremely proud of our sporting success at OL, having successfully rebuilt the squad, returning to European competition in each of the last two years, after a long absence. I’m grateful to everyone at OL for their dedication during this exceptionally challenging time. Michele is a perfect choice to lead OL in the next phase and I have full confidence in Michele and OL will come out stronger under her leadership."

– O juiz estava estranho, falando que ia me tirar do jogo.

Court issues stay order to prevent Ranatunga-led interim committee from taking over

Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) administrative malaise took another turn on Tuesday as the country’s court of appeal issued a 14-day stay order preventing the government Gazette that appointed an “interim committee” from taking effect. The move had been spearheaded by the country’s sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe, but had been appealed against by SLC president Shammi Silva. It, however, appears to be no longer a purely sporting issue as prior to the court’s judgement it had already been escalated to the highest levels of Sri Lankan governance – the office of the Sri Lanka president Ranil Wickremesinghe. The matter was eventually discussed by the cabinet of ministers on Monday and even debated in Tuesday’s parliamentary session.According to widespread reports, President Wickremesinghe had only learnt of the move to appoint an interim committee through the media. Ranasinghe for his part has argued that the decision was vested solely with the sports minister and did not require the approval of the cabinet or the president.Related

Nevertheless, following the matter being tabled at the cabinet meeting, where Ranasinghe was also present, it was decided that a four-member sub-committee, headed by foreign minister Ali Sabry, would be appointed to investigate SLC.”The cabinet has resolved to appoint a special sub-committee with the mandate to examine the current situation and work in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including input from esteemed former cricketers,” a statement from the president’s media office said. “The primary objective of this sub-committee is to recommend immediate, viable measures to resolve the outstanding issues in Sri Lanka Cricket.”Speaking in parliament today, Ranasinghe also revealed that the president had asked him to withdraw the appointment of an interim committee. Ranasinghe, who has frequently accused the board headed by Silva of financial misappropriation and mismanagement remains bullish over his desire to see the Arjuna Ranatunga-led interim committee preside over SLC.Speaking to local media on Monday, he stated: “These are people enjoying public money. If the president, attorney general and the inspector general of police assist me, the entire SLC committee will be in prison for at least 15 years.”There are notable concerns, however, regarding how the ICC would respond to such a move, something the president is said to be cognisant of. Under Sri Lanka’s sports law, the government has the power to dissolve the governing body of any sport – a power it has used several times on SLC in the last 20 years. But during the time of the most recent interim committee, which presided for roughly a year between 2014 and 2015, the ICC had refused to disburse payments owed to SLC, and held those funds in escrow until a fresh board was elected. SLC was also demoted to observer status at ICC board meetings in that period.Meanwhile, it remains unclear who will appear as an SLC representative for the next ICC board meeting in two weeks’ time.

Jadeja, Kohli lead India to fourth win in a row

Jadeja’s role with the ball and on the field, and cameos from India’s top order, topped off yet another dominating win

Shashank Kishore19-Oct-20231:43

Pujara: Jadeja is more accurate than a bowling machine

The sameness to a Virat Kohli innings in a middling chase is no criticism of his batting. The beauty of it lies in the repetitive nature of it, a mark of his hunger to make every start count. On Thursday, it helped deliver ODI century No. 48, which takes him that much closer to the man who he hoisted on his shoulders on that famous April night in 2011, before delivering an epic line that made a country of more than a billion shed happy tears.Kohli’s knock, which turned into a race between his hundred and a victory towards the end, was preceded by a run-torrent from Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The pair’s 88-run opening stand in a chase of 257, which seemed well short of a par score, was an exhibition of batting aesthetics dreams are made of. Rohit, with his lazy elegance, ferocious cuts and monstrous pulls did the early running, and Gill took over the mantle to slowly get into top gear. And after the two fell against the run of play, caught in the deep to shots they’d back themselves to execute 99 times out of a hundred, Kohli ushered everybody aboard his train of ODI batting that has delivered runs unfailingly. Fleeting cameos from Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul topped off a dominating win, India’s fourth, that now puts them level at the top with New Zealand, their next opponents on Sunday in Dharamsala. It was one that had been set up by Ravindra Jadeja, both with the ball and on the field with his catching. His figures of 2 for 38 may not seem blockbuster at first glance, but it played a massive role in pulling Bangladesh back from an innings that was at one point running at a breakneck speed. From 10 for 0 in five overs, the next four went for 37. Tanzid Hasan soon got into gear and raced towards a maiden ODI half-century off 42 balls. He hooked Jasprit Bumrah, toyed with Shardul Thakur and took him for 6,4,6 in a forgettable opening over and laid down a marker for the innings. But as spin came on, Kuldeep Yadav delivered an opening in the 15th to break a 93-run stand.Hardik Pandya gets treatment after injuring his ankle•ICC via Getty ImagesIn between that, India had a jolt with Hardik Pandya hobbling off three balls into his opening over, after twisting his left ankle in his follow-through. You wondered then if the absence of a sixth bowling option would hurt them. It didn’t as Shardul bounced back from his opening over to bowl eight more, even picking up a wicket before Mahmudullah hurt his figures in his final over.Pandya didn’t return for the rest of their innings and wasn’t needed with the bat either, but once the euphoria of the result dies down, realisation of how massive Pandya is to the balance of the team will dawn sooner.Even as Kuldeep slowed the innings down, Jadeja brought the crowd to life with his accurate wicket-to-wicket stuff that sent back Shanto. By now, runs had reduced to a trickle and the pressure to up the ante also got Litton chipping one straight to long-off to give Jadeja a second wicket. At 137 for 4, the innings was in build-rebuild-build mode.Mushfiqur Rahim played an array of neat paddles and sweeps to keep the scorecard ticking in the hope of taking the innings deep, but the resultant pressure from Towhid Hridoy’s struggles – he was on 14 off 32 – with 14 overs left, led to him trying to be a bit more enterprising, especially with Hridoy unable to capitalise after playing himself in.One such chance off a Bumrah cutter found an acrobatic Jadeja diving full-stretch to his right to pull off a sensational grab to send back Mushfiqur for 43. It was as exhilarating as Rahul’s stunning grab at full stretch down leg to dismiss Mehidy Hasan a while earlier. The superhit moments on the field continued when Bumrah dismantled Mahmudullah with a pin-point yorker, but not before the allrounder’s 46 had somewhat lent respectability to Bangladesh’s total.Ravindra Jadeja trapped Najmul Hossain Shanto in front•Getty ImagesIt set up the kind of chase teams can be wary of, not sometimes knowing how hard to go up top. But India’s plans seemed clear. Rohit wasn’t going to tamper with the fundamentals of his reinvigorated game that centers on taking the attack to the opposition in the powerplay. But on 48, he went for a pull that was right out of the screws, except it found deep square.Kohli had two free hits off his first four balls that he converted into a boundary and a six to fire his innings into orbit straightaway. There on, he didn’t look back. He drove well, ran hard, manuovered spin expertly, and also treaded caution especially against the skiddy Hasan Mahmud.Like Rohit, Gill too fell against the run of play after tantalising with some languid shots to signal, signs of dengue seemingly a thing of the past. Shreyas Iyer would have perhaps been a tad disappointed at not seeing the game through especially after playing himself in, but the timing of his dismissal was hardly a reason to fret for India. Rahul calmed the nerves before he reined his game in to allow Kohli to get to the landmark. At one point, India and Kohli both needed 19. You wondered briefly if No. 48 had to wait. But it didn’t need to. With two needed, Nasum fired one down leg in anticipation of a wide that wasn’t given. One ball later, Kohli stepped out and hacked a low full toss into the deep midwicket stands to seal victory.
