  • WHAT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAID

Speaking to DAZN, the English full-back said: "I had to try to perform for the team and help them win the game, no matter how difficult it was. As hard as it was to do it, I had to push myself to focus on what my job and role was. I tried to do it as best as I could, but it was difficult and I am not going to lie about that.

"[Jota] was one of my close friends – and I am sure that's what he would have wanted me to do. I'm sure we would have had a laugh and joke about the assist as well. He was there with me, I am sure. I shared the dressing room with him for five years – amazing memories on and off the pitch. It goes without saying he will never be forgotten by anyone. He will live long in all our memories for the amazing man and the player he was."

He added: "I've been around him, his brother, his family, his amazing wife, his amazing parents and his amazing children. It's truly, truly heartbreaking to wake up to news like that. It's something you never expect."

ESPNcricinfo has learned that India’s squad for the T20I series is scheduled to be picked on November 15, the same day Rohit Sharma’s team faces New Zealand in the World Cup semi-finals in Mumbai. It is understood that Hardik, who tore a ligament in his left ankle in the World Cup league match against Bangladesh on October 19, was advised six to eight weeks of rest by the BCCI medical staff. The medical staff was initially optimistic about Hardik recovering in time to play in India’s last league match against Netherlands on November 12. However, the swelling failed to recede, causing pain during the fitness tests Hardik underwent before he was eventually ruled out of the tournament, with Prasidh Krishna named his replacement.Related

Phillips: 'As a batter, I'd look to target myself as well'

Mahmudul Hasan Joy admits Bangladesh got out to “bad shots” trying to hit out against Phillips

Mohammad Isam28-Nov-2023Glenn Phillips knew that the opposition batters would get stuck into him for relief. He is the fifth bowler of a strong New Zealand attack. He was also bowling for the first time in a Test. Phillips the batter would have certainly tried to hit Phillips the bowler out of the park. It was this element of Bangladesh’s mindset, combined with a few other factors, that gave him his first four wickets in Test cricket. Phillips was the best bowler of the day, something that he perhaps didn’t envisage when he went out in the morning in Sylhet. His reaction to his first wicket said as much, too. Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh’s captain in this series and their in-form Test batter, had already taken Ajaz Patel, New Zealand’s spin mainstay, apart. One shot too many, however, brought Shanto back to earth. He mistimed a Phillips full-toss to mid-on, where Kane Williamson pouched a difficult skier.Related

Phillips’ facial expression was priceless. He hung his head before a big smile emerged as he celebrated his first Test wicket. He later said, in jest, that he would trade his second wicket (Mominul Haque, caught behind) as his first Test wicket.”I have dreamed of getting my first Test wicket for a long time, but that was not how I thought I would get it,” Phillips said with a round of laughter following in the press conference room. “You see legspinners often bowl absolute peaches and then a nice juicy full-toss. The batter’s eyes light up, and it goes straight up. I have always wanted a little piece of that, but I didn’t want it for my first Test wicket. Maybe we can replace it with the second wicket. Look, I have got out to full-tosses. Every batter gets out to full-tosses. I just got a little bit lucky.”Phillips said that his lack of notoriety as a bowler, coupled with Bangladesh’s aggressive approach, helped him get the four wickets. Soon after he got to the crease, Mominul was heard in the stump microphone telling Mahmudul Hasan Joy to hit Phillips out of the attack.”They came hard at us early on. They put Ajaz [Patel] under a lot of pressure. I think it did present the opportunities to take wickets throughout but as we have seen in the subcontinent pitches, you have to be aggressive to put bowlers off their line and length. The Bangladesh boys did that well today but it presented a few wicket-taking opportunities.”Obviously with someone new that the guys haven’t faced before, there’s always that element of unknown. Obviously being the fifth bowler, as a batter, I’d look to target myself as well. I think maybe the combination of those two things presented the opportunity to take a few wickets, which was really nice.”I tried to stick to the process. Pass the baton on to the other boys. Try to build dots, build pressure. Jazzy bowled unbelievably well. Our seamers bowled incredibly well. Ish [Sodhi] bowled that absolute speccy of a delivery. The pressure was built by everyone all round. I just received the reward,” he said.Mahmudul, who top scored for Bangladesh with 86 runs, said that they played some bad shots against Phillips.”He is an occasional bowler so if we didn’t charge him, the main bowlers would have kept us in check,” he said. “We wanted to attack the occasional bowler. Unfortunately we got out to bad shots against him.”This is how Shanto bats. He wanted to play his natural game. Not all batters get the chance to get set. It is always frustrating to get out in the thirties or forties. People get out. It was a full toss. It doesn’t happen all the time. I was a bit surprised too as Shanto was playing really well.”Phillips was bowling in Tests for the first time, playing in his second Test. He said that his bowling has given him the competitive advantage in a tough field for aspiring batters in the New Zealand Test side.Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul Haque put on 88 off 171 balls for the third wicket•AFP/Getty Images”I have been trying to lose the wicketkeeper-batter tag for a long time now. Hopefully this (four-wicket haul) puts a little stamp on things. I worked really hard over it for quite a number of years now with this goal in mind.”I also felt that I needed to offer something with the ball in order to play Test cricket. Our batting line-up is incredibly strong. Key to getting this opportunity was to play the allrounder’s role.”Phillips said that his captain Tim Southee mixed the bowlers’ spells effectively, particularly keeping in mind the type of bowlers he had and their respective confidence levels.”I think it is a mixture of understanding that there’s five days of cricket to go with only two seamers. Using them in short bursts and understanding that Ajaz will probably bowl a lot of overs to hold an end for a while. Ish is our impact bowler.”I think to be able to have a ball turning in, mixing myself with Jazzy, is probably an ideal scenario. Having lefties in the top-order allowed Ajaz to have a bit of break. But also I think credit to Timmy for understanding what we as spinners need from a confidence perspective.”For example, before he took that wicket, Ish didn’t start off the way he would have liked. He felt a bit more relaxed a few overs into it. Starts ripping it really hard, and then obviously the reward comes. The way he holds himself and talks to us as bowlers, is really encouraging. We back his decision-making all the way.”Bangladesh, meanwhile, will rue throwing away their wickets after most of the batters got starts. Mahmudul felt that the hosts are still on top given the type of pitch in Sylhet, but admitted that their 310 for 9 at stumps is well short of their planned score.”We wanted to score 350 to 380 runs. It didn’t happen. We will try to stop them with their quality spinners. If they bowl well, we can bowl them out for a low total. The pitch isn’t as easy as it looks. The ball turns often. It is not every day that a batter will score runs,” he said.Asked why Shanto and Nurul Hasan were in ultra-attacking mode from the start, Mahmudul said that they stuck to their game plans while he grafted along for 166 balls.”It is easy if you trust your defense. Everyone has a different game plan. Shanto , myself and (Nurul Hasan) Sohan played our natural games. You can last long in any wicket if you trust your defensive technique,” he said.Unfortunately for Bangladesh, it also meant that they couldn’t control their aggressive intent, succumbing to Philips’ highly underrated offspin. Their target to “hit him out of the attack” didn’t go to plan. As Mahmudul said, they are now pinning their hopes on their spinners to do the job.

France entered Round 3 of the group stage of the 2025 European Championship as the leaders of Group D with two wins from their opening two games. The Netherlands, on the other hand, won their opener against Wales but then suffered a humiliating loss to England in Round 2. Heading into the clash, the Leeuwinnen knew that even a win would not be enough for them to reach the quarter-final of the Euros, as they would need the Lionesses to either draw or lose their clash against Wales.

The Oranje started the clash on the front foot but were quickly pushed onto the back foot as France almost opened the scoring via Sakina Karchaoui, who was denied by Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar. Les Bleus did not look back after that as they continued to dominate the game before Sandie Toletti finally broke the deadlock for France with a half-volley into the Netherlands' goal.

However, the Oranje did not let their heads drop as they shifted gears and began countering France's press. Their first big chance came to Chasity Grant, who struck a thunderous volley but was denied by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin only to see Pelova pick up the pieces and fire into the top corner. The Dutch then had total control over the clash as they threatened the French goal on multiple occasions; however, the Netherlands' lead came after Les Bleus defender Selma Bacha turned over a threatening pass from Lineth Beerensteyn into her own goal.

The second half saw the French come back into their own as they dominated proceedings yet again, as the Dutch players seemed to withdraw into their shells. It was at the hour mark that the Netherlands lost the ball on the halfway line before Cascarino played in Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who slotted the ball for the equaliser. What followed was a blinding storm from France as they added two more goals in the next six minutes, with Cascarino scoring both.

In the end, the Netherlands' hopes were short-lived as their loss and England's win saw them crash out of the group stage of the 2025 Euros.

    THE MVP

San Diego Wave star Cascarino had a rather dull first half as she could not break the Dutch defence. However, it was the second half that saw her come into her own as she managed to bag one assist and two goals all within six minutes of the game, while keeping Netherlands defenders Kerstin Casparij and Dominique Janssen on their toes as she moved in and out of the centre of the field. Her first goal on the night saw her toy with Janssen before letting rip on a 22-yard strike past Van Domselaar.

    THE BIG LOSER

Former Manchester City star Jill Roord was not directly at fault for any of France's goals; however, her night saw her fail to dominate the midfield for the Netherlands as she lost possession on 12 occasions and also lost the ball for Cascarino's second goal of the night.

Better than Maddison: Spurs' "titanic" 9/10 ace showed why he's undroppable

Well, that was just about the perfect performance from Tottenham Hotspur last night.

Yes, it would have been even better had they kept a clean sheet and taken a three-goal lead to Norway next week, but as things stand, Ange Postecoglou’s side look well-placed to make it to the Europa League Final.

Moreover, apart from a few minutes towards the end, it was a pretty comfortable affair, and if anyone looked like scoring more goals, it was the Lilywhites and not FK Bodø/Glimt.

Practically every starter put in a shift to be proud of, but two stood out in particular: James Maddison and someone who now must start the next game.

Maddison's game vs Bodø/Glimt

While it was a big night for the whole team, it was a massive one for Maddison.

With Spurs being at home and undoubtedly firm favourites ahead of kickoff, it was down to the former Leicester City star to assert himself on proceedings and act as his side’s chief creator, which he did with aplomb.

In fact, for much of the first half, he was near enough unplayable, popping up here, there and everywhere before grabbing his goal in the 34th minute to secure a two-goal cushion for the North Londoners.

It might sound somewhat hyperbolic, but it’s an opinion shared by Spurs writer Alasdair Gold, who awarded the Englishman a 9/10 match rating at full-time, describing it as ‘a really creative performance.’

The only negative from the game for Maddison, which could be a massive one, was that he went off injured in the 65th minute, and until his fitness is cleared up, it’ll be a nervous wait for fans.

However, as superb as the mercurial number ten was, another starter was just as good, if not a little better.

Spurs' other stand-out star

While the likes of Richarlison, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson all put in serious shifts for Spurs last night, the starter in question is none other than Pedro Porro.

The Spanish full-back has received his fair share of scathing criticism this season – sometimes justifiably – for his occasionally haphazard defending, but against the Norwegian champions, he hardly put a foot wrong in that regard.

Moreover, and far more importantly, it was a match in which he showcased his game-breaking offensive qualities.

For example, on several occasions in the first half, the “titanic” right-back, as dubbed by The Athletic’s former Spurs correspondent Charlie Eccleshare, managed to ping a sensational ball over their opposition’s backline for his teammates to latch onto, and it was that saw Maddison score his goal.

We weren’t the only ones impressed with the 25-year-old either, as Gold also awarded him a 9/10 match rating, describing him as ‘Tottenham’s best player on the night’ and crediting him for preventing ‘what likely would have been a goal’ in the 70th minute.

His statistics also make for decent reading, as in 95 minutes of action, he provided one assist from an expected assists figure of 0.47, made four clearances, wasn’t dribbled past a single time, made two interceptions, didn’t commit a foul, created one big chance and played four key passes.

Ultimately, Spurs put in what was almost the perfect performance last night, and while the entire team deserve serious praise, Maddison and Porro stood out that little bit more.
