Better signing than Ekitike: Chelsea ready to launch bid for "elite" star

Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign took a disastrous turn when the Blues faced off against Flamengo in Philadelphia.

It was looking all rosy for Enzo Maresca’s side after Pedro Neto opened the scoring, but a second successive win for the West Londoners in the competition ended up falling out of their grasp in horrible fashion.

Nicolas Jackson’s second-half dismissal was the beginning of Chelsea’s downfall, leading to Filipe Luis’ Flamengo taking home a surprise 3-1 victory.

This loss would have angered Chelsea fans, knowing full well that the Blues are looking to upgrade on Jackson soon in the chaotic summer transfer market, as seen in their ongoing pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt gem Hugo Ekitike.

Jackson could well find he’s out of the door soon, as the Blues’ patience begins to wear very thin. Yet, the shock defeat to Flamengo would have also made Chelsea aware that they need to seal an upgrade in the goalkeeper department too.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As per a new report by TEAMTalk, Chelsea are ready to go all in for a new goalkeeper very soon to replace the inconsistent Robert Sanchez.

It’s stated that the Blues have not cooled off regarding their interest in AC Milan shot-stopper Mike Maignan, with a second bid now being prepared for when the Club World Cup finishes.

AC Milan's MikeMaignanreacts

A bid around the £20m mark, which includes add-ons, could well seal the deal here, with Chelsea in dire need of a new, reliable ‘keeper, particularly if reserve stopper Djordje Petrovic bids farewell to Stamford Bridge for good this summer.

Why signing Maignan should be a bigger priority than Ekitike

Whilst Jackson does currently find himself in the bad books at Chelsea after his red card incident, he has at least managed to show off his class in flashes when bagging 30 Blues strikes and counting.

Whereas, Sanchez is becoming more and more known for his error-strewn performances in West London with the capture of Maignan perhaps a more pressing matter than landing Ekitike.

After all, whilst Ekitike appears to be the flavour of the month with the Blues, Liverpool and Manchester United all sniffing around, the blistering Frenchman has flopped before when a big move has been put in front of him.

Indeed, the 23-year-old only netted three goals on the books of Paris St. Germain after a breakout Stade De Reims spell. Therefore, similar pressures could get to him again after a 22-goal season leading the line for Frankfurt, especially if a reported £60m price tag comes to fruition.

On the contrary, the much-talked-about Maignan is a seasoned professional now at the highest level, as seen in his glistening resume of 343 appearances and counting for both Milan and Lille in some tough, challenging divisions.

Therefore, the “elite” keeper – as he was once labelled by Liverpool’s number one Alisson – should be able to arrive at Stamford Bridge and succeed, with plenty of clean sheets often following him wherever he goes.

In total, Maignan is now up to 115 clean sheets for both the Ligue 1 club and his current Serie A employers, with last season seeing him collect 14 of those. To add context, the error-stricken Sanchez lagged behind on ten, with five saves still not enough to keep Flamengo at bay last time out.

At around £20m or so, Chelsea really must prioritise adding the Frenchman to their camp soon over progressing with the far more expensive Ekitike deal, with Maignan having a way smoother June to date too, keeping a clean sheet for his nation against Germany in the Nations League.

The fact of the matter is that Maresca has plenty of attackers at his disposal. Regardless of Jackson’s ill-discipline, they will find a way to score goals. The acquisition of a new gloveman, however, could be the difference between winning titles.

Arsenal bizarrely get the fireworks treatment as Google celebrates meaningless pre-season Emirates Cup victory

Arsenal have bizarrely been given the fireworks treatment by Google after claiming victory over Athletic Club in the 2025 Emirates Cup.

The event is hosted by the Gunners on an annual basis. While a trophy is lifted by the winning team at Emirates Stadium, the game in question is considered to be a pre-season friendly.

There are no wild celebrations to be found and any successes are not usually added to the victorious team’s roll of honour. Google does, however, appear to consider Emirates Cup triumphs to be worthy of note.

The tech giants add firework displays to their landing screen whenever a suitable term is searched. England’s Lionesses recently got that treatment after successfully defending their European Championship crown.

Winners of the Champions League, Premier League and World Cup get the same celebratory display, with fans around the world left slightly puzzled by Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over La Liga opposition being recognised.

Viktor Gyokeres opened his goal account for the Gunners against Athletic Club, with Mikel Arteta’s side – who have finished as runners-up in the English top flight across three successive campaigns – hoping that a title charge is on the cards for 2025-26.

Jordan Thompson shines with ball and bat as Yorkshire defeat Northants

His 3 for 18 and quickfire 20 lead Vikings to comprehensive victory

ECB Reporters Network02-Jun-2024Jordan Thompson claimed three wickets for just 18 runs and hit a crucial quickfire 20 as Yorkshire Vikings inflicted a comprehensive win over Northamptonshire Steelbacks in this Vitality Blast clash at Wantage Road.Dom Bess and Matt Revis also shared two wickets apiece as the Vikings restricted the Steelbacks to 157 for 8 chasing 187 to win, coming out victors by 29 runs.Ravi Bopara had kept the hosts in the hunt with 35 off 21 balls to follow bowling figures of 4 for 34 and Ricardo Vasconcelos made 37, but with wickets falling regularly, the momentum was all with the Vikings.Joe Root (35) and Dawid Malan (41) got Yorkshire to an explosive start, putting on 67 in 8.1 overs before Yorkshire faltered to 100 for 4 in the 13th over. But a record fifth-wicket partnership for Yorkshire against Northamptonshire of 64 between Shan Masood and Dom Bess and some power hitting in the final over from Thomspon helped them up to 186 for 6.Earlier Root went on the offensive immediately against Ben Sanderson, striking him for consecutive boundaries, before whipping him over deep midwicket and hooking David Willey to fine leg.Malan was also locating the ropes and with Root on-driving Sanderson for four off the final ball of the powerplay, Yorkshire were well placed at 55 without loss.Root’s departure came in dramatic style though as he slogged Bopara towards cow corner and picked out George Bartlett who held the ball, throwing it up as momentum carried him over the rope, before stepping back onto the pitch to complete the catch.Bopara picked up his second wicket with the next delivery when he found some seam movement to bowl James Wharton.Donovan Ferreira smashed two huge sixes over deep midwicket off consecutive balls from Bopara but skied his next delivery to Matthew Breetzke at long-off.Malan meanwhile struck the scoreboard as he hit Bopara down the ground for six, but the bowler had the last laugh again as Malan was bowled stepping away.Incoming batter Bess was busy from the outset, taking 12 runs off Sikander Raza, including a switch hit for four, while Masood sent spinner Freddie Heldreich’s first two deliveries to the ropes and powered George Scrimshaw high over long-on for six.Bess took consecutive boundaries off the 18th over bowled by Willey while Masood hit Scrimshaw for six in the penultimate over, the tall pace bowler had Bess caught at mid-off.Thompson started an eventful final over by striking Willey for four and a six over long-on before he was dropped by Bartlett in the deep. Thompson garnered one more maximum before he was caught to give Willey his 299th T20 wicket. For the Steelbacks, Vasconcelos targeted Dan Moriarty, dispatching him down the ground for six and four off consecutive deliveries. But fellow opener Breetzke (11) swung and missed and was comprehensively bowled with the Steelbacks finishing the powerplay on 43 for 1.With the required run rate rapidly rising above 10 and Root proving difficult to get away, Vasconcelos eventually deployed the reverse sweep before swinging Bess high over deep square for six.If Willey had hopes of finishing his 100th T20 game for Northamptonshire with a big score, they were dashed when he picked out Root on the long-off boundary off Bess, who soon had a second when Vasconcelos was caught by Revis running in from the square-leg boundary.Saif Zaib kept the Steelbacks in the chase with a big six swung off his hip behind square off Jafer Chohan, but his stay was brief as he skied one from Thompson, the bowler himself taking the catch as he ran towards square leg. Two balls later Thompson accounted for Raza when he hit down the ground and was caught by Root at long-off.Bopara hit Moriarty over long-off for six and pulled Chohan for four to take the Steelbacks past 100 in the 14th over, before blasting an enormous six off Revis over the food stalls at cow corner. Lewis McManus too took the attack to Revis, hitting a maximum into the carpark at the Abington Avenue end.It took a special piece of fielding to dismiss Bopara when he swung Moriarty off his hip, only for Thompson to take a spectacular diving catch, running in from the deep square leg boundary. Bartlett then fell cheaply to Thompson with the ball this time.McManus hit Revis for consecutive fours, but departed for a spirited 26 off just 14 balls, caught by Moriarty off Revis as Yorkshire closed in on victory.

USMNT star Antonee Robinson to miss start of Premier League season, Fulham boss Marco Silva confirms

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Fulham manager Marco Silva has confirmed that U.S. men's national team defender Antonee Robinson will not be ready for the start of the Premier League season.

"Jedi had the small surgery; it will take a little bit more time for him to be ready," he said Sunday.

Robinson has not participated in Fulham's preseason after undergoing knee surgery in May. That surgery prevented him from featuring in the Gold Cup, with the defender also previously missing the CONCACAF Nations League matches in March due to injury issues.

Fulham are set to open their Premier League season this weekend against Brighton, and after Robinson sat out of this past weekend's 1-0 friendly win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Silva confirmed that the fullback was not yet ready to play.

    WHAT SILVA SAID

Silva bemoaned Fulham's lack of new signings with the Premier League season less than a week away, a situation that further compounds the team's current injury woes.

“We expected much more activity from ourselves in terms of recruitment, players in," Silva said. "Unfortunately, they are not here. The worst thing we can have now is more injuries.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Robinson was integral to Fulham's performance last season, contributing more assists than any other Premier League defender did during the most recent campaign. In addition, he captained Fulham 18 times as they finished with their record-high Premier League points tally.

The USMNT, meanwhile, has missed him for all of 2025 so far, with his absence surely felt during Nations League losses to Panama and Canada as well as the summer run, which included five Gold Cup wins sandwiched between losses to Turkey, Switzerland and Mexico.

USMNT transfers: Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace now both reportedly pursuing Yunus Musah, while Columbus Crew's Max Arfsten could be closer to European exit

The USMNT Transfer Notebook tracks American player movements, with latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool

The clock is ticking on transfers in both MLS and Europe, with the end of August marking a crucial period for the U.S. men’s national team. Several players face uncertain club futures, or need significant moves, to cement their place in Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup plans.

In Italy, Yunus Musah's status continues to swing like a pendulum. Last week, it was reported he would stay at Milan, but now it appears both Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are aggressively moving to acquire the talented midfielder, who has struggled for consistency in Serie A.

Josh Sargent is off to a torrid start, scoring in his first two games of the season. Yet, Norwich manager Liam Manning stressed that the striker could still be on the move. In MLS, Max Arfsten has been linked with a move all summer and it appears Real Salt Lake's talented youngster, Zavier Gozo, is drawing interest from a Belgian giant.

GOAL tracks all of the American player movements in the USMNT Transfer Notebook, a recurring feature covering the latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool.

Will he stay or go? That's seemingly been the question for months with Musah, a player with plenty of potential who has struggled to find a fit in AC Milan. Though Musah appeared to be set to stay after a strong preseason, Nottingham Forest emerged as a strong contender to sign the American, with the Athletic reporting the two clubs opened talks over a move.

Things took another turn on Tuesday. Forest reportedly wasn't willing to reach Milan's $40 million valuation, offering $35.1 million. That could open the door for another club to emerge in Crystal Palace, according to journalist Ciro Venerato. Musah's is Forest's No. 1 target, but they are already looking at alternatives if Milan aren't willing to accept their bid.

There are positives and negatives with both reported bids, as Forest clearly values Musah but had struggles integrating another American, Gio Reyna, two years ago. Palace features another USMNT star in Chris Richards, but already has a strong midfield with Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada.

Will it be London or Nottingham or potentially Naples? Time will tell.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportNorwich preparing for Sargent's exit?

Sargent is arguably the hottest striker in the U.S. national team pool, scoring in both of Norwich's opening games. Despite Sargent wearing the captain's armband in the opener, Canaries boss Manning admitted the 25-year-old could still be on the move.

"I think the best practice is to be proactive with the work you do… With the interest, you’d be mad to not do anything behind the scenes to be prepared. So, of course, we want him to stay, but we have to be prepared if it doesn’t happen," the manager said.

While Sargent turned down a move to Wolfsburg earlier, he continues to be linked with other moves – including to Burnley and Leeds earlier this summer.

Getty Images SportAnother American to Belgium?

In June, it was reported that Belgian side Genk were monitoring RSL teenager Zavier Gozo. Yet speculation suggests that they aren't the only club who are watching the U.S. youth international, who scored at the weekend for Real Salt Lake against the New York Red Bulls.

Gozo, 18, has been a breakout star alongside Diego Luna in the first team, and is expected to compete for a spot at the U20 World Cup this September.

“I don't really think about that," he said of a possible transfer. "I'm just focused on the season right now and getting as many wins as we can, making the playoffs. And then, you know, the offseason, we'll see."

Getty Images SportArfsten gives green light to Middlesbrough

The emerging wingback has been the subject of a transfer tug of war between Toulouse and Middlesbrough, but if reports out of England are to be believed, the Crew star has given a clear indication of his preference.

The Northern Echo is reporting Arfsten wants to go with Boro and has asked for a transfer from Columbus.

The sticking point remains price, as the English club's bid of $3 million was rejected by the MLS side – who insist they want to keep the 24-year-old until the end of the season.

If the deal goes through, it could be a promising for Arfsten, as manager Rob Edwards likes playing a system with attacking wingbacks, and currently features fellow USMNT midfielder Aidan Morris.

A medical and the final signature are expected to take place this week, completing one of the Saudi Pro League's most significant transfers of the summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Coman's move to Al-Nassr comes after a season where his playing time at Bayern Munich was significantly reduced under manager Vincent Kompany. The arrival of Luis Diaz from Liverpool further pushed the Frenchman down the pecking order. With Coman's contract expiring in 2027 and his high wages, the transfer provides Bayern with financial relief and an opportunity to restructure their squad. For Al-Nassr, the signing of the Champions League winner is a major statement of intent, as they continue to build a formidable attack alongside new signings Joao Felix and Inigo Martinez.
