A Sterling repeat at Ibrox: Rangers in talks to sign "incredible" £4m star

Glasgow Rangers were dealt a big blow back in April earlier this year when versatile star Dujon Sterling suffered a long-term Achilles injury.

The English star had to be stretchered off during a Europa League clash, and Barry Ferguson confirmed after the game that he would be a long-term absentee for the Gers.

Sterling had to have surgery on the injury and it now remains to be seen when the versatile Rangers man will be available for action again for the Scottish Premiership giants.

He has played 70 times, in a multitude of positions, for the Light Blues since his move from the Premier League side in 2023, and the club could repeat their success with him by signing another player from Chelsea.

Rangers in talks to sign Chelsea defender

The Ibrox giants can find themselves a quality defensive option by raiding Chelsea for another player who is unlikely to break into their first-team squad next season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to football.london reporter Bobby Vincent, Rangers are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Ishe Samuels-Smith from the English side this summer to bolster Russell Martin’s options at the back.

The journalist claims that the Gers have held club-to-club talks with Chelsea to sign the full-back on loan, whilst Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Stoke City are also keen on snapping him up.

Vincent adds that Rangers, and three English teams, are pushing to secure the 19-year-old left-back, who was signed from Everton for £4m in 2023, on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, with his future set to be ‘clearer’ within the next two weeks.

Why Rangers should sign Ishe Samuels-Smith

Whilst it may not be a permanent deal, as it was with Sterling, Rangers should sign Samuels-Smith from Chelsea because he could follow in the footsteps of the last signing from the Blues.

As aforementioned, Sterling has been an incredibly versatile operator for the Gers, playing at right-back, right midfield, defensive midfield, left-back, and centre-back during his time in Glasgow so far.

Glasgow Rangers defender Dujon Sterling.

In Samuels-Smith, Rangers could find another versatile star who can operate in a host of different positions to cover when needed for Martin, as a terrific squad option.

The 19-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance in his career, which makes it difficult to predict what his role in the squad will be, but his positions at youth level for Chelsea and Everton show that he could be called upon in several areas of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Samuels-Smith is similar to Sterling in the sense that he has the potential to play as a full-back, a centre-back, or as a defensive midfielder, albeit as a left-sided option primarily, instead of a right-sided one.

In terms of his quality, his former Everton coach David Unsworth claimed that he has an “incredible future” ahead of him, whilst analyst Kai Watson believes that he has “elite” potential.

The post above also shows that he impressed Watson at U21 level in the Premier League 2 last season, which suggests that the teenage sensation would arrive at Ibrox this summer full of confidence to take on his first go at senior football.

Overall, as a low-risk loan move, Samuels-Smith could be a smart signing for the Gers as an extremely versatile young talent with the potential to offer value in multiple positions, possibly making him excellent cover for Sterling until he returns from his injury.

Matthew Mott steps down as England white-ball coach

Miller: Mott was most dispensable of an uninspiring pairing

Matthew Mott has stepped down as England Men’s white-ball head coach with immediate effect.Mott was halfway through a four-year contract, during which time he presided over triumph at the 2022 T20 World Cup as well as the side’s failure to defend that title this year or the 50-over crown they won in 2019 at the 2023 edition, where they won just three of their nine games. He will be replaced by assistant coach Marcus Trescothick on an interim basis for the rest of the home summer, which includes three T20Is and five ODIs against Australia in September.Related

Key, Mott in spotlight as England white-ball team reaches crossroads

On Sunday, Mott met with Rob Key, ECB managing director of England men’s cricket, to gauge his view on the last nine months as part of a review into the drop in team’s limited-overs performances.”I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour,” Mott said. “We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022.”I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories. Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world.”Appointed in May 2022, Mott also led England to white-ball series victories against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand and Pakistan. But it appears that England’s most recent campaign, where they were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the semi-finals by eventual winners India, was pivotal to the decision.Matthew Mott was halfway through his contract•Getty ImagesKey said the search for a full-time replacement would begin immediately. He believed the rapport between Trescothick and white-ball captain Jos Buttler “will help us maintain continuity and stability”.”On behalf of everyone connected to England cricket and me personally, I would like to thank Matthew for all he has done for the team since his appointment,” Key said. “He can be proud of his achievements as he leaves his post as one of only three coaches who have won a Men’s World Cup with England.”After three World Cup cycles in a short space of time, I now feel the team needs a new direction to prepare for the challenges ahead. This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right time for the team’s future success. With our focus shifting towards the Champions Trophy early next year and the next cycle of white-ball competition, it is crucial that we ensure the team is focused and prepared.”Trescothick, added: “England cricket is in a strong position, and the potential is huge, given the quality we have available. It is about harnessing that potential and developing the work that has already been put in place by Matthew Mott and the rest of the set-up. I’m excited about the challenge and shaping how we want to play.”Eoin Morgan, England’s former World Cup-winning captain who now works as a commentator, recently dismissed reports that he could replace Mott as nothing more than “speculation”.Other names such as Andrew Flintoff, currently in his first coaching role with Northern Superchargers in the men’s Hundred, Mike Hussey, who was part of the coaching staff for the successful 2022 T20 World Cup campaign, and Kumar Sangakkara have also been touted for the role. However, it is understood no prospective successors to Mott have been sounded out at this juncture.

Derby now set to sign "fantastic" star in £7m package after Batth & Weimann

Having already welcomed both Danny Batth and Andreas Weimann this week, Derby County have now reportedly reached an agreement to sign an impressive international forward.

Derby confirm Batth and Weimann arrivals

The Rams are wasting no time ahead of their second season back in the Championship. After kicking their summer transfer window off by signing Carlton Morris from Luton Town and Richard O’Donnell from Blackpool, those at Pride Park have since stepped things up even more by welcoming both Weimann and Batth on free transfers from Blackburn Rovers.

After putting pen to paper to join the club, Batth told Derby’s official website: “When I got the call, I was excited [by the opportunity] and I’m glad to be here now and ready to get down to work.

“I just think it was a great opportunity for me to come and help the team and the club. I’ve played against Derby over the years. I know what an occasion it is when you play at the stadium and the support the club gets.

“I just wanted to be part of that. It’s a real project, and I think the foundations were set last year. The club is now looking to move forward, so I want to be a big part of that.”

Weimann shared that same excitement after rejoining the club for the first time since leaving for Bristol City in 2017. The forward particularly singled manager John Eustace out for praise, saying: “I think there are a couple of factors, to be honest.

“Obviously, one is the manager. I loved working with him last year, I have known him for a long time and played with him at Watford when I was a teenager.”

Now that Weimann and Batth are official, however, Derby have reportedly turned their attention towards the likes of Callum Brittain as well as finalising another impressive deal.

Derby reach agreement to sign Agyemang

According to GiveMeSport’s Tom Bogert, Derby have now reached an agreement to sign Patrick Agyemang from Charlotte FC in a package worth a total of $10m (£7M) this summer.

The American international, who has scored five goals in just nine appearances for his country, represents an exciting arrival for Derby and arguably their best yet this summer.

The 24-year-old has unsurprisingly been at the centre of praise whenever he has starred for his country, including from USA manager Mauricio Pochettino. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea boss told reporters last month after victory over Haiti: “Patrick is doing a fantastic job for the team.

“All that he gave to the team today and the previous games also, he’s a fantastic striker. Still room to improve, but we are so happy with him.”

Rangers have struck gold with "complete" star who's worth more than Frigan

Russell Martin may not have been the appointment many Glasgow Rangers supporters wanted, but he has carried himself well when speaking to the media.

The former Southampton manager is keen to bring a positive style of play to the Light Blues ahead of next season, focusing on a high-possession, attacking philosophy that will hopefully make the club perform well domestically.

First things first, he will need new signings, and plenty, if he stands a chance of winning the Premiership title in his first season at Ibrox.

Rangers search for new signings

The Light Blues have been linked with several names recently. Defender Max Aarons is a reported target and would be a fine addition to the squad.

As has Conor Coady, who could add some experience to the heart of the defence for next season.

Bolstering his attacking department is also a priority, and names such as Dor Turgemen and Igor Matanovic have been linked with moves.

Igor Matanovic

Perhaps the most interesting rumour is regarding Matija Frigan. It was reported that the Westerlo striker may cost up to £6m should Martin look to bring the player to Glasgow this summer.

Having scored 14 goals last term, it wouldn’t be a bad piece of business for sure. But does Martin have the cash available to make such signings?

Or will he be forced to cash in on some of his prized assets to fund potential transfers? Especially someone like Mohamed Diomande, who could command a massive fee.

Rangers have struck gold on Mohammed Diomande

While it may cost around £6m to sign the Croatian hitman ahead of the 2025/25 campaign, Diomande is worth over three times more due to his impressive performances.

He moved to Rangers for just £4.3m from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland in January 2024, and he emerged as a key player under Philippe Clement.

Despite the club performing poorly last term, the Ivorian was in fine form. He registered 15 goal contributions – six goals and nine assists – across 54 matches. Not only that, but the midfielder also created 11 big chances, averaged 1.1 key passes, and won 55% of his total duels per game in the top flight.

It is no wonder he was hailed as the “complete” midfielder then by analyst John Walker just last month, and he could turn out to be the club’s next big sale.

According to Football Transfers, Diomande is currently valued at €9.3m (£8m), and this is rising exponentially.

This means he is valued at £2m more than the reported target Frigan, but if Martin wishes to sell the Ivorian starlet, then teams may have to pay over the odds to convince the Light Blues to part ways with him.

Whatever happens in the near future, whether it is this summer or next, the Light Blues have hit the jackpot on a player who could make them a fortune given what he is now worth in comparison to the fee that they paid for his services last year.

Will the new manager cash in when the iron is hot? Or wait and see if his price increases?

Only time will tell.

West Brom now reach total agreement to sign 8-goal striker for Mason

Kicking on with their summer business, West Bromwich Albion have now reportedly reached an agreement to sign an attacking reinforcement worth around £5m.

Since appointing Ryan Mason and signing Nat Phillips from Liverpool, West Brom’s summer business has slowed down somewhat. And with just one month until the Championship gets back underway, the Baggies must rediscover their momentum to welcome some key additions for their new manager.

That’s not to say the rumours haven’t been coming thick and fast, though. Whilst West Brom haven’t acted since signing Phillips, there are still several names on their reported radar.

Among them includes the experienced Barry Bannan. The veteran midfielder is currently at Sheffield Wednesday, who remain in a precarious spot financially and struggling to pay staff on time. Failure to solve that problem will likely to result in an exodus of players, allowing West Brom to take full advantage.

Any signing would be following Phillips through the door, who expressed his delight after putting pen to paper at The Hawthorns last month, saying: “A big factor was that this is obviously a big club with high aspirations – and I’d say those aspirations align with mine. I think everyone at the club and involved would like to see it competing for promotion and pushing for Premier League football – and that’s the same as me.

“I’m really looking forward to it and as soon as I found out about the interest I just wanted to get here and get going. Throughout my career I’ve always wanted to develop a rhythm and continue to play week in, week out. I feel like I did that in the second half of last season, and I want to continue that rhythm and try to take that into the season coming up.

West Brom can forget Brooks by signing "fearless" star who's "like Neymar"

ByKelan Sarson Jul 4, 2025

“I’ve had a number of loans over the past few years and it’ll be really nice for me and my family to go somewhere and know we’re staying there to develop a relationship with the club and the fans.”

As impressive as the defender is, the Baggies require more reinforcements and have now reportedly turned towards a fresh name in pursuit of exactly that.

West Brom agree deal to sign Heggebo

According to Fabrizio Romano, West Brom have now reached an agreement to sign Aune Heggebo from Norwegian side Brann. In a deal worth around €5.5m (£5m), the 23-year-old striker will hand Mason an instant attacking boost to kickstart the Baggies’ summer business.

The young forward will be a new name to most, but those in Norway will know him as the player who scored seven goals in just 13 league appearances last season and eight goals in all competitions.

Whether those numbers translate to the Championship will be the big question next season, especially as Heggebo enters the peak of his powers in the coming years.

Better move than Gassama: Ibrox target wants to sign for Rangers this week

Glasgow Rangers completed their latest signing of the summer transfer window on Tuesday when they confirmed the arrival of Djedi Gassama at Ibrox.

The 21-year-old winger has arrived at Rangers on a four-year deal to bolster Russell Martin’s options on the flanks, after he scored seven goals in 43 games last season.

Gassama will be hoping to provide a threat in the final third on a regular basis for the Scottish Premiership giants next term, and could be in line to make his debut against Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifier later this month.

The French forward may not be the only player to arrive at Ibrox this week, though, as there is another player who wants to make the switch to Glasgow in the coming days.

English star pushing to sign for Rangers

One of Martin’s transfer targets is said to be pushing for a move to Ibrox this week, and it could be an even better signing than Gassama if they can get it over the line.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to the Daily Record, Leicester City central defender wants to complete a transfer to Rangers from the Championship side by the end of this week.

The report claims that the former England international is ready to plead with the Foxes to give him the green light to make the move to Ibrox, in order to be in the squad to face Panathinaikos later this month.

It adds that Martin is a big fan of Coady and that the player wants to join the club to be the ‘linchpin’ of the new defensive set-up at Ibrox next season.

Why Coady would be a better signing than Gassama

At least for next season, the veteran central defender could be an even better signing than Gassama because of the quality and experience that he could use to hit the ground running.

Gassama, at the age of 21, is a young and promising forward who may need time to adapt to Scottish football and to grow as a player, having only managed eight goal contributions in 43 games in the second tier in England last term.

Meanwhile, Coady is 32 and has made 198 appearances in the Premier League. He has proven himself at the very top level in domestic European football, and showcased his in-possession qualities when Leicester were in the Championship in the 2023/24 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the English star is a centre-back who has the quality and mentality to be incredibly progressive with his use of the ball, helping his team to play through the thirds quickly and effectively in a ball-dominant team.

Off the ball, Coady won 64% of his duels that season for the Foxes in their title-winning campaign, which shows that he can also dominate opposition attackers in physical tussles.

Leicester City's Conor Coady.

The former Wolves captain, who was described as an “infectious” character by Gareth Southgate, is a proven quantity who would be able to arrive at Rangers to provide instant, almost guaranteed, quality on the pitch with his abilities in and out of possession as a centre-back.

There is far less risk attached to signing a proven player like Coady, who was playing in the Premier League last season, than bringing in a 21-year-old from the second division in England.

Raskin repeat: Rangers racing to sign £9m "set-piece specialist" at Ibrox

Rangers are reportedly interested in a deal for a star who could be their next Nicolas Raskin.

ByDan Emery Jul 14, 2025

That is not to say that Gassama will be a bad signing, or that he is not an exciting addition, but Martin also needs instant quality and that is why Coady may be an even better piece of business if they can get it over the line this week.

They put on 60 runs or so without a wicket lost,” Knott said. “But we knew once we got one wicket we would get the rest, so we just had to stick in there. He did not feature in a single game.Following his selection, the selectors intimated that they had spoken with Dickwella over his poor disciplinary record. The left-handed batter has been no stranger to controversy throughout his career, with his off-field lifestyle proving a lightning rod for criticism in light of his frequently erratic form. He was most notably among three players banned for breaching bio-bubble protocols in 2021, alongside Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilake.Dickwella has kept wicket for Sri Lanka across formats, scoring 2757 runs in Tests, 1604 in ODIs and 480 in T20Is.

Wolves make first approach to sign £34m Club World Cup goalscorer

Turning their focus towards the Club World Cup, Wolverhampton Wanderers have now reportedly made their first approach to sign a South American star this summer.

Who Wolves could sign next after Lopez

Wolves still have money to burn after welcoming Fer Lopez and could yet do so to make an emphatic statement ahead of Vitor Pereira’s first full season in the charge. The sales of Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha may have dealt the Midlands club a frustrating double blow, but they have also provided those at Molineux with the funds to pursue names such as Harvey Elliott.

£85m release clause: Wolves make first approach to sign South American gem

The Midlands club could sign the midfielder in a cut-price deal.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 26, 2025

The Liverpool youngster seems to be edging closer to the exit door at Anfield and recent reports revealed that it is Wolves who are confident of getting a deal done to secure his signature. Priced at £40m, Pereira could yet welcome a player who just dragged England into the U21 Euros final with a fantastic winning goal to add to his first effort.

His price tag may seem steep on paper, but Elliott would be worth every penny on the pitch. At just 22 years old, the Liverpool gem is already a two-time Premier League winner and has also won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his time in Merseyside. What makes those achievements even more special is the fact that he is yet to reach the peak of his powers.

Wolves have an opportunity to sign an underrated youngster this summer and must do everything to secure his signature. It’s then that Elliott could also be joined by a Club World Cup star as the focus remains on welcoming exciting young talents in the Midlands this summer.

Wolves make first Wallace Yan approach

As reported by Globo Esporte and relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves have now made their first approach to sign Wallace Yan from Flamengo. The 20-year-old forward has a release clause to join European clubs worth €40m (£34m) and could yet swap South America for the Midlands as a result this summer.

Flamengo's Wallace Yan celebrates scoring against Flamengo.

The young forward has already enjoyed the feeling of scoring against English opposition too, having netted Flamengo’s third goal in a shock 3-1 victory over Chelsea at the Club World Cup.

A player who was described as “selfless” by analyst Ben Mattinson in April, Yan is full of potential and joining following former Fluminense midfielder Andre to Wolves could be the perfect way to reach that potential.

The deal won’t come cheap, but the Brazilian proved that has the quality to match Premier League opposition when he squared off against Chelsea. Now, Wolves would be wise to make their move.
