Not Gyokeres: Arteta must axe Arsenal's "signing of the summer" vs Man City

By the time night falls next Sunday, we will all have a much clearer idea as to whether or not Arsenal are truly capable of dethroning Liverpool as Premier League champions.

In a week’s time, the Gunners will face Newcastle on Tyneside, having lost four of their five visits to St James’ Park since the Saudi takeover, failing to score in all of these defeats.

Before then, in this Sunday’s headline slot, Mikel Arteta’s team will welcome Manchester City to North London, seeking a third successive home win over the Sky Blues for the first time in 16 years.

If the Gunners are going to prevail, Arteta must ruthlessly leave out Arsenal’s “signing of the summer”, and it’s not who you might expect.

Viktor Gyökeres' start to life at Arsenal

Five matches into Viktor Gyökeres’ Arsenal career, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag.

He has certainly felt at home at the Emirates, scoring twice when the Gunners demolished Leeds 5-0 last month, before getting on the end of an inch-perfect Eberechi Eze cut-back to double their advantage against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Thus, should the Swedish international get on the scoresheet against Man City, he would become only the second Arsenal player to find the net in each of his first three Premier League appearances at the Emirates, after Alexandre Lacazette, who found the target against Leicester, Bournemouth and West Brom back in 2017.

However, away from home, Gyökeres has been less impactful.

At both Old Trafford and Anfield, he’s been little more than a peripheral figure, and it was a similar story at San Mamés on Tuesday, registering just 19 touches of the ball, the fewest of any Arsenal starter, missing two Opta-defined big chances.

Nevertheless, with Kai Havertz sidelined, Gyökeres will be the man leading the line this weekend, but Arteta certainly has decisions to make in other areas of the field, one in particular will be tough.

Arsenal's signing of the summer

Given that Arsenal made eight signings this summer, bringing in Gyökeres, Eze, Martín Zubimendi, Noni Madueke and others to plenty of hype, the arrival of Cristhian Mosquera very much went under the radar, but could he prove to be the best signing of the lot?

After William Saliba hobbled off inside two minutes, Mosquera was thrown in at the deep end against Liverpool at Anfield, but looked confident and assured throughout, winning four out of five ground duels, completing 92% of his 51 passes.

Making his home debut against Nottingham Forest last weekend, he was excellent again, with Andrew Mangan, speaking on the Arsecast Extra, stating that if Arteta had simply asked him to do an impression of Saliba, he could’ve found no fault in his performance.

With Saliba not risked in Bilbao on Tuesday, remaining an unused substitute, Mosquera starred again, as documented below.

As the table notes, Mosquera was exceptional in the Basque Country this week, ranked first for passing and aerial duel metrics, contesting the most duels of any Arsenal player, behind only Athletic duo Álex Berenguer and Mikel Jauregizar, which will certainly have pleased Arteta.

Having joined from crisis club Valencia, in a move reminiscent of Santi Cazorla’s arrival from cash-strapped Málaga back in 2012, one content creator has asserted that he will prove to be the Gunners’ “signing of the summer”, considering he cost just £13m.

However, should the Spanish Olympic gold medalist be back on the substitutes’ bench come 4:30pm (BST) on Sunday?

As already mentioned, Saliba is available again following injury, with Arteta stating in his pre-match press conference on Friday that “he’s done really well to be available… we will decide tomorrow who is the best to start”.

As good as Mosquera looks, Saliba has been one of the best, if not the best, centre-backs in the world in recent seasons so, if he’s fit and ready to go, he simply has to start such a crucial game.

Alongside partner Gabriel, the pair have really relished recent battles with Erling Braut Håland, a key reason why the Gunners are unbeaten in five meetings with Manchester City, having lost 15 of the previous 16 encounters beforehand.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

So, while Mosquera would much rather start on Sunday than at Port Vale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, a rather less glamorous fixture, his time will come, and not starting a fully fit Saliba would be frankly crazy.

Luke Edwards shares what he's heard from Newcastle on Tino Livramento's injury

Tino Livramento’s injury in Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal is a big concern as the Magpies were stung by another late winner at home to one of the ‘big six’ on Sunday.

Livramento injured in Newcastle defeat

Eddie Howe’s side suffered stoppage-time heartbreak at St James’ Park on Sunday, with Gabriel’s last-gasp header depriving the Magpies of a point in the Premier League.

While the result was hugely disappointing, the biggest negative on the day for Newcastle was arguably the serious-looking injury that saw Livramento stretchered off in the second half, following a coming together with William Saliba.

The Englishman was down hurt for a while before leaving the field and Howe himself didn’t sound too positive after the game, saying: “He’s such a big player for us in so many different ways – his versatility, his attitude, his quality. If we’re going to miss that for any length of time, it is going to be a huge blow.”

Newcastle fans are understandably sweating over Livramento’s injury, not wanting to lose a vital player so early in the season, and a now a new update has emerged regarding the severity of the setback.

Edwards shares Livramento injury update

Writing on X, reliable journalist Luke Edwards claims that Newcastle defender Livramento hasn’t suffered ACL damage, but he could still be out for an extended period.

This has to be considered a positive for both Livramento and Newcastle, with an ACL blow having the potential to end his season already, given how serious those injuries can be and the fact it would be his second of the kind.

The 22-year-old will also be dreaming of featuring for England at the 2026 World Cup next summer, and this update suggests that his absence isn’t likely to be as lengthy as first feared.

That said, it is still more than possible that Newcastle have to make do without Livramento for a sustained period of action, which would be such a blow, with Howe lauding one performance against Brentford last season.

“I think another big game for him today, because he’s playing against arguably their most dangerous player [Mbeumo]. I thought he defended very well. Athletically, Tino’s excellent, and we know that. We’ve seen that since he’s come to the football club. But to have the responsibility of playing left-back on the opposite side to his natural foot and play the way that he has.”

Purple & blue cards? FIFA's brand new VAR challenge initiative, and why it threatens to lead to even more delays – explained

FIFA is rolling out a brand new VAR challenge initiative that gives managers the power to use purple and blue cards during matches to request a decision review from the referee, but it threatens to lead to even more frustrating delays. The cards are currently being tested at the 2025 Under-20 World Cup in Chile and in other smaller-scale tournaments and leagues.

'Cost-effective and stable' new FIFA system

As per the , pilot runs of the new system, called Football Video Support (FVS) – described as "cost-effective and stable" by FIFA – have been introduced by competitions that do not have the financial means to use full VAR technology. Serie C and the Primera Federacion (the third tier of men's football in Italy and Spain, respectively), and the Liga F (Spain's top-flight division for women) became the first competitions to start using FVS on a full-time basis in August. Trials have also taken place in the Italy women's Serie A, and in Brazil's Copa Paulista and Copa do Brasil Feminina.

AdvertisementHow do purple and blue cards work?

Each opposing manager is given a card at the start of a match – one purple and one blue to differentiate teams – which can only be used by them or an appointed senior team official in their absence. Managers can make two review requests, and just like in tennis and cricket, one is lost if a challenge is unsuccessful, and the two will remain intact should a challenge be upheld.

Players can also ask their managers to issue a challenge, but all review requests must be made immediately after an incident has occurred. Managers are required to twirl a finger in the air and hand their card to the fourth official to lodge an official review request.

The most recent use of FVS came in Morocco's semi-final clash with France at the U20 World Cup on Wednesday. Morocco boss Mohamed Ouahbi waved a purple card after his team's appeals for a penalty were waved away, and the referee subsequently reviewed the video evidence on a pitch-side monitor. The referee's original decision was upheld, much to Ouahbi's disappointment, but Morocco still went on to win the tie on penalties.

Unfortunately, the review system still caused a lengthy delay to the match, and some fans have suggested managers could use it as a tool to disrupt their opponents' rhythm. X user @krasmanalderey sarcastically said, "This is definitely not gonna get abused to time waste…", with @pincigoat adding, "Teams that are losing towards the end of the game appeal just for the sake of it and ref has to go to the monitor to check random plays".

Meanwhile, @Valkyrie1336786, dragged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta into the debate, saying, "Don't let Arteta see this!!! We might never leave the pitch!"

Getty ImagesWhat's being said about it?

FIFA has stated that the FVS system "is used only in the event of a possible clear and obvious error, or serious missed incident in relation to the following scenarios, such as goal/no goal, penalty/no penalty or direct red cards (not second cautions)". Legendary former referee Pierluigi Collina, who is now the chairman of FIFA Referees Committee, has confirmed that they have been "encouraged" by initial test results, though FVS is not being lined up to replace the current VAR format.

"FVS is a tool to support referees in competitions with fewer resources and cameras. It should not be seen as VAR or as a modified version of it, as it does not include video match officials monitoring every incident," Collina added.

AFPWhat comes next?

The next use of purple and blue cards could come on Sunday, when Morocco take on Argentina in the U20 World Cup final. FVS will also be trialled at the 2025 men's and women's U17 World Cups in Qatar and Morocco, respectively, while several FIFA Member Associations are set to participate in trials later this year or in early 2026.

FIFA intends to continue using FVS in competitions where matches are covered by up to four cameras, instead of the multi-camera systems used across the biggest divisions in world football.

He'd revive Mainoo at Man Utd: INEOS eyeing "incredible" Amorim replacement

After the dismissal of Erik ten Hag nearly 12 months ago, Manchester United fans will have been excited by the appointment of Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP.

The 40-year-old won two league titles back in his homeland, even beating Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League just a couple of weeks before his appointment at Old Trafford.

However, his stint in charge of the Red Devils has been nothing short of a disaster, with the manager achieving a win percentage of just 39% in his 49 outings.

His latest defeat against Brentford has once again cranked up the pressure on his shoulders, with his £200m attacking additions still struggling to have the desired impact.

His future at the Theatre of Dreams remains hugely up in the air, with the INEOS hierarchy already seemingly targeting other alternatives to replace him should he be handed his marching orders.

The Man Utd shortlist to replace Amorim

Over the last couple of days, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has emerged as a potential option to replace Amorim at United should he be given the boot in the near future.

Whilst the Cherries want to keep hold of the Spaniard, they could have no choice in allowing him to depart, with the 43-year-old’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

AFC Bournemouth manager AndoniIraolalooks dejected after the match

However, he’s not the only name currently on their shortlist, with former England boss Gareth Southgate once again emerging on the INEOS radar, as relayed by FootballTransfers.

They claim that the 55-year-old could be open to returning to management and moving to Manchester after taking time out of the game following his departure from the national team in July last year.

It remains unclear if he will be the club’s main target for the role should Amorim depart, but the board have been impressed with his ability to get the best out of his players at international level.

Why United’s latest manager target would revive Mainoo

United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has endured somewhat of a frustrating last 12 months on the pitch, with boss Amorim often looking past him for selection in his midfield.

The Englishman only registered 20 league starts out of a possible 38 last season, with the likes of Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro ahead of him in the manager’s pecking order.

However, he has previously nailed down his place in the starting eleven, with Ten Hag often relying upon the 20-year-old to produce the goods during his tenure in charge.

Mainoo racked up various key goals in 2023/24, from last-minute winners to derby day goals and an FA Cup final strike – it truly was a year to remember for the youngster.

Such performances secured him a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad last summer, further showcasing his remarkable rise over such a short period of time.

He even started four of the nation’s six games in such a tournament, showcasing the faith that Southgate had in the youngster to deliver on the biggest stage for his country.

The appointment of the former England boss would certainly hand Mainoo the chance to regain his place in the side, whilst also instilling the confidence he’s been massively lacking in recent months.

For the Red Devils, the potential decision to hire Southgate may not be many supporters’ first choice, but it is one that could deliver the needed turnaround in form they’ve been craving.

The 55-year-old, who’s been dubbed “incredible” by Scott Parker, achieved a 63% win record in charge of the Three Lions and subsequently took them to two major international finals.

His side’s also achieved an average of 2.3 goals per game under his guidance, offering the Red Devils the needed attacking quality they’ve lacked in recent weeks under Amorim.

Such numbers are nothing short of remarkable, with the former England boss potentially able to end the club’s decade-long wait for a league title in the years ahead.

Success in the role is one thing, but the development of the players at his disposal would also be a massive part of his task in charge at Old Trafford.

Mainoo could be a huge beneficiary of such an appointment, potentially starring under Southgate’s reign once again and getting back on the trajectory he was once on at the Theatre of Dreams.

Marsh and Kohli move into top five on the Orange Cap table

There was no major shuffle on Purple Cap table, which is led by Noor Ahmad

‘A riled-up Kohli is bad news for the opposition’

Asked to bat first, Marsh smashed a 37-ball 67 and was involved in a 152-run stand with his captain Rishabh Pant to help LSG post 227 for 3. It wasn’t enough though, as RCB chased it down with eight balls to spare and six wickets in hand. One of the key contributors for RCB was Kohli, who hit 54 off 30 balls to lay the foundation for Jitesh Sharma to take off.Marsh now sits at No.4 and he signed off the season with 627 runs while Kohli, who will be in action in the playoffs, is behind him at No. 5 with 602 runs. There was no change at the top with Gujarat Titans’ B Sai Sudharsan leading the table, followed by Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav of Mumbai Indians.Purple Cap tableWith Josh Hazlewood yet to play this IPL after recovering from his shoulder injury, there was no major shuffle on the Purple Cap table which is led by Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), with 24 wickets. Martin upgrade who's "similar to Postecoglou" in running for Rangers job

Glasgow Rangers need to find the next head coach to carry the club and the new ownership forward after Russell Martin was relieved of his duties from the Ibrox hot seat on Sunday night.

It is hard to make a case for the former Scotland’s international’s defence, because the statistics around his short time at Rangers paint a pretty clear picture.

Martin’s Gers conceded 24 goals in 17 games and won just five times, including once in the Scottish Premiership, which is why it is hard to argue against the decision to part ways with him heading into the international break.

Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell must, though, get this next appointment right to get the Ibrox supporters back on side, and to get Rangers’ season back on track.

Rangers eyeing move for title-winning manager

After Martin, a manager who had never won a top-flight title in his playing or managerial career, the Gers may turn to a proven winner to bring success back to the club.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

According to Football Insider, the Light Blues have identified four managers who are not the frontrunners to replace Martin in the dugout for the clash with Dundee United after the break.

The report claims that Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche, Danny Rohl, and Kevin Muscat are the four head coaches in the running to land the job at Ibrox.

Muscat, who played for the club in 2002, is an interesting contender for the vacant position because he could be an upgrade on Martin and Rangers’ own version of Ange Postecoglou.

Why Rangers should appoint Kevin Muscat

Journalist Gavin Berry recently compared the English-born boss to the former Celtic manager, who worked with Postecoglou as his assistant at Melbourne Victory.

The reporter said: “I just think the style that he plays, similar to Postecoglou, obviously worked under him. We know it works in the Premiership. I think he’s someone who could take a squad and get the most out of it.”

Postecoglou, of course, won two Premiership titles in two seasons with the Hoops, including a domestic treble in his second campaign, with his high-octane, exciting, brand of football.

Muscat’s managerial record since going down his own path as a head coach suggests that he could bring similar success to Ibrox as a big upgrade on Martin in the dugout at Rangers, as he has shown that he can win titles.

As you can see in the table above, he has won a league title in two of the last three seasons, and is on course for a third title in four seasons unless Rangers can convince him to make the move to Ibrox.

He won the J1 League with Yokohama F. Marinos in the 2022 campaign and currently manages SH Port, which is the club he joined at the start of the 2024 season.

His impressive league form in Japan and China shows that he would come in as an upgrade on Martin, because Muscat has proven that he can instill a winning mentality in multiple countries and leagues.

Muscat, who has won seven trophies (Transfermarkt) in his managerial career, knows what it takes to win trophies and to win titles, which is exactly what the Gers need in this moment in time.

Ally McCoist says 49ers and the old Rangers staff colluded to make fatal error

The Gers are in peril.

ByBen Goodwin Oct 6, 2025

Rangers have not won a trophy since Philippe Clement lifted the League Cup in 2023, but the SH Port boss could bring glory back to Ibrox as the 49ers’ own version of Postecoglou.

It is now down to Stewart and Thelwell to convince Muscat to move on from the Chinese club, in spite of his side being on the verge of winning a league title.

Nissanka 187 leads SL's solid reply after Bangladesh post 495

Mathews fell for 39 in his farewell Test, even as Chandimal’s fifty helped SL reduce deficit to 127

Madushka Balasuriya19-Jun-2025Partnerships were the name of the game for Sri Lanka as every top-order batter chipped in to whittle away at Bangladesh’s healthy first-innings total of 495. By stumps, Sri Lanka’s deficit had been trimmed to just 127.A majority of it was cut down courtesy Pathum Nissanka, who struck a career-best 187 off 256 balls. It was his first ton on home soil, and a knock that had seen him dominate from the first new ball to the second. He would have been eyeing a maiden Test double hundred – to go with one in ODIs – but that second new ball and the unpredictability of a wobble seam combined to dislodge him, as Hasan Mahmud sneaked an inducker through bat and pad late in the day. That wicket may end up keeping Bangladesh’s heads from dropping heading into day four, after the Sri Lanka batters had spent the majority of day three steadily shaking out any confidence the visitors may have gathered during their dominance on the opening two days.Nissanka was part of four steady stands, alongside Lahiru Udara, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis, which were worth 47, 157, 89, and 38, respectively. More pressingly for Bangladesh, the scoring during each of these stands came at a fair clip, with Sri Lanka’s run rate consistently hovering around four an over.Dinesh Chandimal and Pathum Nissanka added 147 for the second wicket•Sri Lanka CricketBut even following Nissanka’s dismissal, any respite seemed short lived as Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu already sped to a stand of 37 off 45 deliveries by the end of play. For Bangladesh, the four wickets were shared equally among Mahmud, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan and Mominul Haque. But with three of the five bowlers employed going at over four runs runs an over, it was a tough day out for the visitors. On a surface that had started showing signs of deterioration – but one that was still good for batting by Galle’s usual day three standards – Sri Lanka’s batters showed Bangladesh where theirs had faltered. Well, as much as you could falter having scored 495.Bangladesh had spent the first two days content at progressing at a touch above three runs an over, rarely shifting pressure on to the Sri Lanka bowlers. In the end, it proved to be the difference between a total of near-500 and perhaps 600.Fine margins, usually, but with Sri Lanka knocking off 75% of Bangladesh’s total in just three sessions, there now lies the very real possibility that Bangladesh could be asked to bat out day five – rain allowing – just to save the Test. And while this Galle surface has been more batter-friendly than usual, the ball misbehaved occasionally, and you imagine that will only get more frequent over the next two days. That said, Sri Lanka still have work to do to make that possibility a reality. But you wouldn’t back against them judging by how they went about their batting across the day.Angelo Mathews got a guard of honour from the Bangladesh players•Ishara S. Kodikara/AFP/Getty ImagesAside from a brief period before tea, when scoring slowed to a trickle, Sri Lanka’s batters had it all their own way. This was down to a combination of positive intent from the batters, and some inconsistent lines and lengths from the Bangladesh bowlers. Nissanka, in particular, was batting with supreme authority: anything short was dispatched square, and anything overpitched was laced through the covers. His aggression, and ability to alleviate even small periods of pressure with a boundary or two, meant the pressure on his partners was kept to a minimum. It saw Chandimal notch up a 33rd Test fifty, while Mathews, too, might have enjoined a similar milestone if not for being at the end of one of those rare deliveries that misbehaved. Mominul, the part-timer, got one to dip and turn past Mathews’ forward defence, tickling the outside edge on the way. Each of the wickets to fall, in fact, were against the run of play. Debutant Udara had made it look a far cry from his first Test during a fluent 34-ball 29, before chipping a leading edge back to Taijul. Chandimal, meanwhile, clipped a leg-side offbreak low to leg slip off Nayeem. But with each wicket, Sri Lanka simply dusted themselves off and set about putting together another brisk stand. It was a sharp contrast from Bangladesh’s innings, which had two mammoth stands in the middle, but either side of those had only one reach even 20.Sri Lanka had begun the day with similar efficiency, wrapping up the Bangladesh innings inside the first 15 minutes of the morning session. Asitha Fernando did the honours, ending with figures of 4 for 86.
