Coventry: Club set to remain at St. Andrews

Coventry City look set to play next season’s home games at Birmingham City’s St. Andrews stadium with little happening in terms of a potential return to the Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues played their home games in the 2019/20 season at the 29,409 capacity stadium as they enjoyed a successful season, gaining promotion from League One to the Championship.

Having had an inconsistent home ground over the last few years, the club’s move decision to play outside of Coventry proved to be a second having had a spell at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium.

With the season now over with, some discussion has emerged about a possible return for Coventry to their former home, which is owned by rugby club Wasps.

On the back of those reports of a potential return to the Ricoh Arena, the newly promoted Championship club confirmed an agreement with the University of Warwick to build a brand a new stadium on the outskirts of the city centre.

The new build will be owned purely by Coventry, who will receive all revenues whilst a new rail station and link road is set to be included in the stadium plans.

Signing a one-year deal with the option to extend by a further year with Birmingham City, Coventry are now expected to remain at St. Andrews through to next season with talks between themselves and the Wasps currently at a standstill.

After a successful season at St. Andrews, fans of the Sky Blues will not mind too much if they remain outside of the city for a little bit longer.

The excitement of a new build stadium, one which will be owned by them, is something to really look forward to and a move back to the Ricoh Arena would merely be just a short stay.

Tottenham Hotspur: Fans gush over Christian Eriksen’s view on Mousa Dembele

Former Tottenham star Christian Eriksen says Mousa Dembele is the best player he has played with, according to DR Sporten, and his opinion was shared by @TranSPURS.Â

Speaking to the Danish outlet via an Instagram Q&A, the midfielder went on to talk about a number of topics, including how he is coping with life in Italy during the pandemic, as well as playing in Serie A for Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan.

After being asked to give his opinion on his best teammate so far, Eriksen said: “It’s a tough one. I feel like I’ve been lucky in my career so far. But I have to say Mousa Dembele.”

The former Belgian international moved to White Hart Lane from Fulham for £17.1m back in the summer of 2012, going on to make over 240 appearances for Spurs, scoring 10 goals and creating 12 assists in all competitions. Dembele notably won the Eredivisie with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and his current market value is rated at just £3.15m per Transfermarkt.

He finally left North London last year for Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F, although it seems plenty of Lilywhites still have lots of fond memories about the 32-year-old.

Unsurprisingly, loads of fans gushed over Eriksen’s comments about Dembele, with one fan tweeting he is “irreplaceable,” and another adding he is “your favorite player’s favorite player.”

Tottenham youngster Parrott hailed by Eriksen

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Christian Eriksen has lauded Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Troy Parrott, per The Irish Sun.

What’s the word?

The Denmark international could go head-to-head with the 17-year-old on Monday, when his side take on the Republic of Ireland in a Euro 2020 qualifier.

Parrott made his international debut on Friday, as Mick McCarthy’s side beat New Zealand 3-1 in a friendly.

And Eriksen is hoping that the teenager plays at the Aviva Stadium, while he believes he will soon be a regular at club level, having scored 27 goals in 34 games in the youth teams this season.

He said: “I hope Troy plays as it will be good fun to see him on the pitch.

“He has showed in training and games for Spurs that he’s capable of joining in at the highest level.

“For a player so young, he is a great striker who makes brilliant runs and scores with excellent finishes.

“Troy is not a shy guy. He stands his ground against defenders.

“I read that he did very well on his Ireland debut against New Zealand and I expect him to play lots more matches for Ireland and Tottenham.”

The best young prospect

Spurs have a number of young prospects, including the likes of Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga, but Parrott is probably the best option in the academy.

He made his debut in the Carabao Cup against Colchester United earlier this season and was also on the bench against Everton in the Premier League.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino clearly sees his promise and his prolific nature in the youth teams, plus a shortage of strikers at senior level, suggests that he could well one day become Harry Kane’s deputy and also his potential successor.

Of course, goals at youth level do not necessarily translate to the first-team but this is a player who can break out of the U18s and make his way into Pochettino’s plans.

He is already highly-rated by Boys in Green boss McCarthy and Eriksen; his club manager will surely give him a chance sooner rather than later.

Tottenham star Juan Foyth’s revelation about Jose Mourinho proves he’s a genius

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Tottenham Hotspur defender Juan Foyth has been speaking to Sky Sports about head coach Jose Mourinho’s approach since he arrived at the club earlier this month, and it shows why he is such a genius.

What’s the word?

Well, the 56-year-old may have been sacked from his previous jobs with Chelsea and Manchester United, but he has proven during his managerial career to date that he is a proven winner, and that he knows what he is doing.

Two wins from two since replacing Mauricio Pochettino is a record that speaks for itself and one many will not be surprised by, and Foyth has offered some interesting insight into what the Portuguese said to the players when he was appointed in north London.

The 21-year-old, who is yet to feature on the pitch under Mourinho, told Sky Sports: “When he arrived, he said we have to go slow. We must not change everything quick. We have to get his idea slow and I think to me and to all the players he tried to give us confidence and see us all happy.

“From the first day he arrived he started to talk with all the players individually and with the squad, and I think that helps.”

Genius

Given what he has achieved and his experience, it would have been easy for someone with the ego of ‘the Special One’ to turn up at Tottenham and completely turn things upside-down and have a serious shake-up following a disappointing end to Pochettino’s reign.

However, as explained by Foyth he has instead taken a more calculated approach, and realised that he has a good squad of players who are perhaps lacking confidence given some of their performances and results this term.

It appears as though the arm around the shoulder and let’s take things slowly method is the one Mourinho has chosen to go with, and it is paying dividends so far even if plenty of work is still needed on the defensive aspect of their game.

Getting everyone in a positive frame of mind and slowly introducing his ideas to the squad is a sensible tactic, and will hopefully lead to more positive scorelines.

Man City’s Yangel Herrera could move to a European giant, says Carlos Ponte

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Venezuelan journalist Carlos Ponte believes Manchester City’s loanee Yangel Herrera will move to a top European club in the near future.

What did he say?

Herrera has been on loan at Granada this season and has already made an impact on the Spanish club. Remarkably, Granada sit third in La Liga after 10 games, and are just two points off leaders Barcelona. Herrera has helped them get to this point, starting seven games and coming off the bench for another.

Ponte has spoken very highly of the 21-year-old and stated that he could move to a top European club if he continues his current form

He told talkSPORT: “At New York City FC his coach was Patrick Vieira, and he took Andrea Pirlo’s place in the team, so he must have learned something.

“He has a lot of energy and stamina, is great at providing cover and a true team player. He’s good at bringing the ball out with a certain degree of elegancy.

“He’s not Sergio Busquets or Rodri, but does that job quite well. He’s very reliable and rarely commits mistakes that leave the team in a bad position. And he’s aggressive: plays in your face without any nastiness, though does get a lot of bookings.

“To be a Guardiola-style midfielder he needs to improve his use of the ball – that style requires so much precision and speed in decision making.

“If he continues his development he’ll end up at a big European club.”

A potential replacement for Fernandinho

The signing of Rodri has made City well equipped in the defensive midfielder role. Rodri joined the Brazilian and Ilkay Gundogan at City, inevitably forcing Herrera elsewhere to gain experience.

However, as Ponte stated, he has massively improved in Spain this year and rarely makes any mistakes. Plus Fernandinho will be 35 come May, and surely does not have many years left at the Etihad as a result.

If Herrera can continue to perform in Granada’s midfield, Guardiola may see him as a long term replacement for the City legend.

If not, City may lose out on a potential star of the future, and the Venezuelan might not be short of offers in the summer if Ponte’s assessment is anything to go by.

Man City fans baffled by Laporte’s omission from the Ballon d’Or shortlist

Manchester City fans cannot understand why Aymeric Laporte has been excluded from the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist.

The Frenchman has been a sensational signing for City since he joined in 2018 for £57m, helping the club win a domestic treble last campaign.

In that time, Laporte bagged himself three goals and provided three assists in 35 Premier League games, proving that he can be an asset at both ends of the pitch.

Fans cannot understand how his hand in a historic domestic treble has not earned him a spot ahead of the likes Marquinhos, who won the Ligue 1 title last season.

The former Athletic Bilbao man has gone from strength to strength and has already proved his importance through his absence this season, with City losing to Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers during his time on the sidelines.

On the other hand, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero are part of 13 Premier League stars making the cut.

However, fans are struggling to get their head around the fact their French star missed out.

Here’s what they had to say…

Barcelona fans were fuming at Mateu Lahoz’s officiating

Barcelona’s weekend clash against Sevilla was a rollercoaster, to say the least.

Not only did the Catalans tally all three points after beating their opposition 4-0 on the night but they also managed to get two red cards at the same time.

First, their young centre-back, Ronald Araujo, was shown a straight red card and then Ousmane Dembele soon followed after exchanging some words with the referee, Matez Lahoz.

That left Barcelona with nine men on the pitch and with some problems for the upcoming fixtures in La Liga.

Sevilla couldn’t take advantage of that because the deficit was simply too big but many Barcelona fans just couldn’t believe what was happening and were fuming at Lahoz’s officiating.

Some accused him of being a Real Madrid fan, hating Barcelona and wanting to be at the very centre of attention once again.

Liverpool would solve a major headache by signing Ajax sensation David Neres

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Italian publication Calcio Mercato, Liverpool are interested in making a move for Ajax forward David Neres.

What’s the word?

The Brazilian has been a key performer for the Dutch side since joining the club from Sao Paulo in January 2017. Last season, the 22-year-old scored twelve goals and provided a further 15 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions, with two of those strikes coming against Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League.

The forward was reported to have had an offer to leave the Eredivisie giants during the summer, but a deal failed to materialise. It was then confirmed he had penned a new deal with the club. However, Calcio Mercato now claim Liverpool are eyeing up a swoop for Neres as they look to strengthen their attack.

Potential

At just 22, the Brazil international has a lot of room for growth in the future. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be able to contribute significantly for Liverpool were he to join anytime soon. Ajax’s fairy-tale run to the last four of the Champions League last season gave him incredible exposure to football at the highest level, and that should stand him in good stead at Anfield.

As someone who can operate both on the left and right flanks, Neres would give Klopp real strength in depth in the wide areas. Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have shared a lot of the goal-scoring burden – they were joint-winners of the Premier League’s Golden Boot last season – and so signing the Ajax starlet would ease the pressure on them considerably.

Whilst his start to the current campaign hasn’t really taken off yet with just two goals in total, his under-lying numbers still shows he is continuing to be an influential player for Ajax. In the league, Neres has averaged 1.3 shots, 1 key pass and 1.6 dribbles per game.

If the Reds make a swoop for the 22-year-old, they would be getting a player in the mould of some of their key attackers – direct, pacy and with an eye for goal – and thus someone who could quite comfortably ease the work-load on Salah and Mane.

Liverpool fans react in hilarious fashion to Alisson’s new look

Some Liverpool fans have reacted hilariously to an image of Alisson Becker, as the goalkeeper nears his return to action.

It’s happened. Alisson has shaved his beard.

There’s something about having a big handsome brute between the sticks, and Liverpool’s number one proved last season he is equal parts world-class and beautiful.

Of course, with the age of social media, fans can be more obsessed with their favourite stars than ever before, and some Reds fans seem to have formed quite the attachment to the goalkeeper’s beard.

The £66.8m star posed on his wife’s Instagram this week in the build-up to his return, which is expected after the international break, but several fans were left disappointed by the absence of facial hair.

We’re not sure whether the former Roma man owes any of his abilities to his beard, but you would certainly think so given how some fans on Twitter have reacted.
