O jogo

Rajasthan maintain perfect home record

A stuttering top order and a lame effort with the ball saw Delhi Daredevils succumb for the ninth time in 12 matches, while Rajasthan Royals sounded out a warning with a nine-wicket thumping

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando07-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
–>A stuttering top order and a lame effort with the ball consigned Delhi Daredevils to their ninth loss in 12 matches, while Rajasthan Royals sounded a warning with a nine-wicket thumping that embellished their unbeaten home record, and propelled them to second place on the table.Royals’ seventh straight victory in Jaipur was founded first on robust bowling, as Siddharth Trivedi, Shane Watson, Stuart Binny and 41-year-old debutant Pravin Tambe struck upon a collective consistency that erased the damage done in Shaun Tait’s early, wayward overs. Their openers then flew to an unbeaten century stand in staggeringly orthodox fashion, and ensured Daredevils’ modest total would not challenge them.Ajinkya Rahane, who opened alongside Rahul Dravid, was dropped on 4, but did hardly a misdeed thereafter, as he finished not out on 63 from 45 balls, after he hit the winning run in the 18th over. Dravid had more of the strike in the early overs, and though he was the slower scorer, reached his fifty first, before departing for 53, with the match almost secure, at 108 for 1.It was Royals’ bowling, however, that had the bigger impact on the match, as they muzzled a seasoned Delhi Daredevils top order, despite their strike bowler’s indiscretions. Tait began the match with an 11-run over, three wides among those runs, and his second cost 17, later in the Powerplay. But James Faulkner and Watson had struck once each in between those Tait overs, and that was enough to scare Mahela Jayawardene and David Warner into relative reticence. On a pitch so full of runs, Daredevils did not hesitate to bat first, but the visitors were barely scoring at six an over inside the Powerplay, and when Warner departed in the eighth over to leave his side at 47 for 3, the run rate dipped further still. Jayawardene attempted a measured rescue, but fell too, before he could make any meaningful impact, and were it not for a well-paced 64 not out from Ben Rohrer, whose recent nuptials had evidently done him good, Daredevils may not have reached 154 for 4 on a pitch on which they should have made 180.Royals’ openers exploited Daredevils bowling, and the pair went about playing orthodox cricket, with just the level of aggression required for such a chase. Daredevils’ seam bowlers strayed towards the pads too often, and Dravid laced the first four of the innings through the leg side, and continued to prosper there, throughout his innings. Rahane began with more nerves – an inside edge past the stumps in the eighth over in addition to the early life – but he found the going simple enough in the end, thanks largely to the largesse of the bowlers. Watson arrived after Dravid’s fall in the 14th over and struck two powerful fours off Umesh Yadav almost immediately, as Rahane coasted beyond 50 at the other end. The pair blasted one six apiece in the 17th over to take their side to the brink.

Shadab set to miss United's home game against Gladiators due to groin injury

United are confident of their captain’s availability during the later stages of the season

Danyal Rasool04-May-2025Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan is expected to miss at least one more game as he recovers from a groin injury. The full impact of the injury is yet to be determined, and United have consulted a doctor from the UK for a complete diagnosis. It is their game at home – against Quetta Gladiators in Rawalpindi – which looks set to come too soon for the United captain.ESPNcricinfo understands United are confident of Shadab’s availability during the later stages of the season, with the side on the brink of making the playoffs after winning the first five games of the season.Shadab picked up the injury during United’s game against Peshawar Zalmi on Friday while batting. An official statement from United said that Shadab had experienced discomfort in his groin during his innings. He subsequently did not bowl or take the field in the second innings, with United ultimately falling short.Shadab then missed his side’s game on Saturday against Quetta Gladiators, with Salman Agha deputising in his absence. United lost a thrilling contest in Lahore in the final over to slump to their third defeat of the season, consequently relinquishing the top spot to the Gladiators.Shadab’s form has been a vital component of United’s success in the first half of their campaign, playing a number of handy cameos in the middle order. However, it is the return of his bowling form that has been the brightest spark. His nine wickets place him in the top ten wicket-takers in the PSL this year, but it is his economy – a consistent weakness of late – that stands out.Shadab has a superior economy rate (6.70) to all spinners in the league bar Mohammad Nabi and Sikandar Raza, each of whom has fewer wickets to their names. That it has been achieved as a legspinner makes the numbers even more impressive; no other legspinner has managed an economy rate lower than 7.64.

Steyn signs on for Brisbane Heat

Dale Steyn will play a one-off match for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League after South Africa’s Test tour of Australia finishes in early December. Steyn has signed on to play the Heat’s first match of the tournament, against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Gabba, to cover for the Heat’s other international fast-bowling recruit, Kemar Roach, who will join the squad after the first game.South Africa’s last Test finishes at the WACA on December 5, which will make it easy for Steyn to stay on for a few days for the game. The Heat coach Darren Lehmann, who coached Steyn with the Deccan Chargers during the IPL last season, said he was thrilled Steyn had agreed to fill the one-match vacancy.”I was pleasantly surprised when he said he was [interested],” Lehmann said. “In fact I was over the moon. It’s one game, and it is a massive bonus to have him available, but it is the first game and that gives us a great opportunity to hit the ground running from the outset.””We struggled to get momentum early last season and that’s an area we’ve had a good look at. But throwing someone like Dale into the mix on the Gabba for our first game is a handy way to help address that. This has all happened pretty quickly for us but it’s certainly something for us and the fans to get excited about ahead of the opening game.”Steyn said: “Even though it’s only for one match, I’m looking forward to experiencing the Australian domestic T20 setup and the passionate cricket fans that I’ve heard lots about. The Heat squad has some talented cricketers on board, who I have no doubt can make a telling impact this coming season.”The addition of Steyn comes after the Heat also signed Mitchell Johnson to their squad this week. The Heat have now signed 16 players and must add two more to their roster by the end of the contracting period on November 30.

Ashraful, Sunny shine in victory

ScorecardMohammad Ashraful hit an unbeaten half-century and Elias Sunny tied down the NCU President’s XI top order before rain brought an early end to Bangladesh’s second Twenty20 warm-up match of the day. The players were forced off with 13.2 overs bowled, with the Bangladeshis awarded a 48-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis method.NCU lost opener Rory McCann to the third ball of the reply and the batsmen struggled to deal with Sunny’s left-arm spin, as he took two wickets in consecutive overs, as well as bowling a maiden. Andrew White was 19 not out when the rain came, with Andrew Poynter having just departed. With 104 required from less than seven overs, NCU’s task already looked beyond them.Bangladesh had already beaten an Ireland XI earlier in the day, chasing down 104, and they proved equally adept at setting a target. Ashraful only hit four boundaries in his 52 but Mahmudullah scored 43 off 27 balls and Ziaur Rahman cleared the ropes twice in his 22, as the tourists completed their preparations for the T20 series against Ireland.

A scream that reaped a score

Technology conspired against Michael Hussey in the first innings at the MCG. He wasn’t finished yet

Daniel Brettig01-Jan-2012

By indulging in a spot of impromptu primal scream therapy following his Boxing Day dismissal in Melbourne, Michael Hussey betrayed the frustrations of a dire run of scores. Having yelled to the heavens for a little more good fortune as he marched off the field, Hussey duly received it in the second innings, making a pivotal 89 with the help of a dropped catch and an edge behind that was not detected by the umpires. That performance, in a partnership of great value with Ricky Ponting, shored up Hussey’s place in Australia’s immediate plans, after a sequence of innings in which he had been getting out at all the wrong times. As perplexing for Hussey were the ways in which technology had conspired against him. In Hobart he was lbw first ball on referral, then at the MCG he was given out for another golden duck without having recourse to refer due to India’s reluctance to employ the DRS.”I said something like ‘give us a break’,” Hussey said of his scream. “I just felt like I’d been preparing so well, I felt really good in my mind, I felt like I’d been hitting the ball really well in the last couple of months but I hadn’t felt like I’d got any reward for the hard work that I’d been putting in. I was almost just yelling at the cricket gods really to give me a break here, you know? I probably got a bit of a break in the second innings so it’s amazing how the game works.”The DRS shall remain a point of conjecture throughout the series, and Hussey maintained Australia’s support of it, while offering some reservations about the veracity of ball-tracking technology.”I’m a fan of the DRS just to give the umpires a helping hand there for one, but also just because we want to get more correct decisions in the match,” he said. “I do still think that the technology can be improved, I’m not 100% convinced that there’s complete accuracy with the tracking system of the ball. Which is, I believe, one of the reasons the Indians don’t want to use it and that’s fair enough.”I’d have to say that I think the umpires did an outstanding job. They’ve got to make a decision within a split second on what they see and they don’t have the benefit of doing the slow-mo replays, having the technology to make their decision. Generally speaking, the umpires down in Melbourne did a great job.”As fortunate as Hussey was at times in the second innings, he also made his own luck by pursuing runs purposefully and aggressively from a position where Australia might easily have been bowled out for their third score of less than 100 within 12 months. Hussey’s first 20 balls, the subject of a dressing room placard urging focus at the start of an innings, reaped 23 runs, and India’s grip on the second innings slackened greatly thereafter.”I didn’t come out with any pre-conceived idea,” Hussey said. “I felt in really good touch in my own mind … it’s just a case of being able to get away with a bit of a start. I was lucky enough to get a ball on my pads to start with and just by getting away early it can sometimes give you that confidence and impetus to continue playing positively.”They were attacking obviously, because they had us in a lot of trouble. That opened up scoring opportunities for us and enabled Ricky and I to get a little partnership together and quite a positive one. It was really tough. I think Ishant Sharma was bowling up around 150km/h and it’s what Test cricket is all about.”From that base Australia built up to one of the team’s most satisfying Test victories of 2011, causing Hussey’s duties as leader of the team chant to be played out with particular gusto in the middle of the MCG some hours after the win was completed.”A very, very satisfying innings and partnership with Ricky,” Hussey said. “There’s no greater feeling to come in with your team under pressure and to be able to get a partnership to where your team can win the match. When you do go on and win the match you can sit back and after that game and really remember such great feelings. That’s where you get your respect from your peers, just going out and doing the business in a real pressure situation. Just a fantastic win by the boys.”

Taufeeq century makes it Pakistan's day

Pakistan gave another demonstration of the batting solidity that has characterised their cricket in 2011, cutting the deficit to 46

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran19-Dec-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Taufeeq Umar was very good on the cut, scoring heavily around point•AFPSandwiched between the familiar Mirpur problems of morning fog and fading light in the evening, Pakistan gave another demonstration of the batting solidity that has characterised their cricket in 2011. Taufeeq Umar added another century to his already rich haul this year, and aided by several middle-order contributions and butter-fingers from Bangladesh, cut the deficit to 46 runs. The flamboyance of old may be missing – Pakistan rarely looked interested in pushing the tempo for much of the day – but the safety-first batting has served them well this year. Bangladesh’s attack was mostly pedestrian, and it was only with the second new ball that there was a sustained period of hostility. In the curtailed morning session, Taufeeq and Azhar Ali blunted the bowling as they stretched the partnership beyond 100. The only real chance of a wicket before lunch was when Taufeeq missed a delivery from Shakib Al Hasan that spun down the leg side in the 36th over. Mushfiqur Rahim collected the ball, and was so certain of the caught-behind that he vociferously appealed without bothering to try stumping Taufeeq who had advanced down the track. The day began with a 11-run over from Shahadat Hossain, but the scoring-rate returned to staid Test match levels after that. It was risk-free batting from both Taufeeq and Azhar, who were supremely patient at most times, but cashed in on the regular poor delivery. Taufeeq was very good on the cut, scoring heavily around point, while many of Azhar’s boundaries were off drives, including a classic past extra cover that took him to fifty. The track was providing little assistance to the quicks, and to make matters worse, in the first over after lunch, Nazimuddin shelled a sitter at gully to reprieve Taufeeq. Luckily for Bangladesh, Shakib got one to spin sharply away, taking Azhar’s outside edge on the way to the keeper. Azhar, at ease against pace, wasn’t at his most assured against spin, and his dismissal for 57 meant he has only one century despite 12 fifties.Taufeeq was unperturbed, continuing to grind the bowling even as Younis Khan took his time to settle in. The cut continued to bring in plenty of runs, there was a risky paddle for four off Shakib and an authoritative swat to midwicket off Mahmudullah. The century came up with a slap behind point for four, after which Taufeeq unleashed a bunch of off-side boundaries.Bangladesh’s spirits were sapped further when both Younis and Taufeeq were given lives in the first two overs after tea – Younis put down at deep midwicket by Shahadat Hossain, while Taufeeq offered a tough bat-pad chance that Shahriar Nafees couldn’t latch on at short leg. They didn’t have to wait too long for the second new ball, though, and that transformed the attack. Nazmul Hossain was outstanding as he got the ball to seam around, and thoroughly tested Younis’ technique outside off before getting Taufeeq to nick to slip. The batting hadn’t exactly been in top gear all innings, and more enterprise was necessary if Pakistan were to aim for a victory. Even as the light faded, Younis and Misbah didn’t go into a shell, picking off the boundaries as the quick bowlers overdosed on the short ball. Their partnership raised 47 at a decidedly brisk 3.76 before play was called off with Pakistan closing in on 300. They will need more quick runs on Tuesday if they are to set up a big total that could put the traditionally fragile Bangladesh batting under pressure for the remainder of the Test.
