Pundit: Hodgson won’t return to West Brom

Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that he expects Roy Hodgson to take a break from football after his Crystal Palace departure, following reports from The Sun that he could be a contender to replace Sam Allardyce at West Bromwich Albion.

Following just under four years in the Selhurst Park dugout, the 73-year-old made the decision to stand down from his role at his boyhood club earlier this week.

Palace have endured a poor end to Hodgson’s reign, winning just three times in their final 11 Premier League games, and whilst they could finish as low as 16th depending on final-day results, he’s continued the good work from those before him to make the Eagles an established top-flight club.

They never finished lower than 14th in Hodgson’s, showing that he’s clearly still more than good enough to manage at Premier League level despite this being his 45th year as a manager.

Hodgson’s previous club job before Palace was West Brom, with Jeremy Peace labelling him as “outstanding” following his appointment in the west Midlands in 2011. And following the departure of Sam Allardyce, does Windass believe he could make a sensational return to the Hawthorns?

He told Football FanCast:

“I think he needs to take a break; he’s getting on now. I’m aware that he’s hands on, on the training ground, but take a bit of time out, do a bit of media work, watch a lot of games.

“I think he will sit off now, enjoy your life. He’s been remarkable. I’ve never met him but he looks like a gentleman, but I think he will walk away.”

Everton: Rodriguez key to European hopes

Everton have just three games left to play this season. It’ll be a hotly contested run of matches that will determine the level of European football they feature in next term.

They are, of course, not guaranteed continental status yet but it would be one box ticked off in Carlo Ancelotti’s aims for the club.

When he first arrived, the Italian revealed he wanted to bring Champions League football back to Goodison Park.

He may have admitted that’s now out of the question for this season at least, but a place in the Europa League is very much in their sights.

On the chalkboard

One player who will be key to their European hopes is James Rodriguez.

The Colombian hasn’t featured since being taken off late in the win over Arsenal at the beginning of the month.

James has since missed the next three games with a minor injury but he has trained this week and has now fully recovered.

Depending on his fitness, Ancelotti must bring him straight back into the starting XI on Sunday evening.

The Toffees face Sheffield United and if their wretched season tells us anything, it’s that Everton should score plenty.

Paul Heckingbottom’s men have conceded the third-highest number of goals in the top-flight this season and if the game was played on paper, they should have no answer to attacking threats like Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The forward has racked up 21 strikes this term and will now be aided by the return of James; Everton’s chief creator on nine assists.

Speaking about the £90k-per-week earner earlier this term, Calvert-Lewin said: “I’d seen the great goals he’d scored and the big teams he’d played for. He’s a top, top player and for me, as a centre-forward, I knew chance-creation would be there and it would be down to me to put the ball in the back of the net.”

The striker continued: “I’m really enjoying playing with him. He’s a different level. He dictates games. He takes players out of games by taking touches. The way he manipulates the ball, he’s very hard to get it off – I don’t think I’ve seen him get tackled, even in training.”

Therefore, if Ancelotti gets the chance to unleash a player like that against a team already relegated, they could run riot.

James has slowed as the term has gone on but the former Real Madrid man has been involved in 15 goals across all competitions.

A magician on his day, it’s still incredibly hard to fathom how the Merseysiders landed him last summer.

The 29-year-old has been a wonderful addition to the Premier League; it’ll be a welcome sight to see him return from injury.

AND in other news, Everton could find their very own TAA by signing £3.5k-p/w gem with “enormous ability”…

Celtic: McAvennie expecting Hoops to make centre-back signing

Former Celtic man Frank McAvennie expects the Hoops to make a significant defensive addition this summer after it was confirmed that Shane Duffy’s loan spell at Parkhead was cut short.

The Lowdown: A deal to forget

It’s safe to say the deal involving Duffy last year has been one to forget for all involved.

Celtic reportedly paid Brighton around £2m to take the 29-year-old on loan and were paying around £25,000 of his salary.

He began as a regular under Neil Lennon, however, he started just once in nine Scottish Premiership fixtures before having his stay in Glasgow cut short.

Reports last month even suggested that recruitment chief Gary Penrice was in line for the exit after being the driving force for the failed Duffy signing, which just goes to show how disappointing the deal turned out.

The Latest: Duffy returns; McAvennie’s claim

The big news regarding Duffy’s Brighton return was confirmed last week (via Daily Record). A Celtic source revealed hours prior to the news that the Irishman was unlikely to play for the club again barring an injury crisis, with the Hoops, at the time, having just two fixtures remaining.

Talking to Football Insider regarding Duffy’s loan spell, McAvennie labelled it as a ‘disaster’ before admitting he ‘expects’ the club to sign a new ‘powerhouse’ at the back.

“It’s been a disaster.

“They took a chance and it’s not worked out. He’s not covered himself in glory with some of the performances he put in up there.

“With the sacking of Neil Lennon, or him walking away whichever way you want to put it, that opportunity of him singing permanently has gone.

“There are a lot of loan players there are going to go back to their parent clubs given the season they’ve had and whoever the new manager is will not pursue them.

“It’s safe to say there’s no question mark over Duffy. He’s not done enough and not been good enough. He’s shown fragility at the back that a team like Celtic can’t have.

“They need stronger players, quicker players and better quality players, unfortunately. I expect them to sign a new defensive powerhouse.

“I’m sure Shane Duffy will find another club somewhere and hopefully that will suit him better.

“He’s shown that he’s not up to the job at Celtic.”

The Verdict: A new centre-back should be top of club’s wishlist

In our opinion, a new centre-back needs to be top of the club’s summer wishlist when it comes to player recruitment.

Christopher Jullien has been out with a long-term injury, while Kristoffer Ajer is reportedly destined to quit Celtic Park.

Should Jullien remain sidelined and Ajer seal a move away, that would leave the new Hoops manager with just youngster Stephen Welsh as the only recognised senior centre-back ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Nir Bitton can turn out as a centre-back when required, however, it wouldn’t exactly be ideal if Celtic didn’t make at least one marquee defensive acquisition, and perhaps even a second new addition for depth.

Leeds receive Omar Colley boost

Leeds United have been boosted in their attempts to sign Sampdoria defender Omar Colley, as the Whites eye up summer reinforcements.

Marcelo Bielsa already has a strong nucleus of centre-backs to call upon, with Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk all good current options.

That doesn’t seem to have deterred the Leeds manager from looking at other possible defensive additions, however, if recent reports are to be believed.

The Whites are thought to be lining up a move for Colley, with ClubDoria46 linking the 28-year-old with a switch to Elland Road on Tuesday.

Leeds receive boost in bid to sign Colley

Now, TuttoMercatoWeb claim that he will be allowed to leave Sampdoria at the end of the season, also adding a second positive piece of news that he obtained a work permit in February, acting as a further boost for Leeds.

The Whites’ interest in Colley is again confirmed, stating that they are hovering ‘in the background’, looking to potentially seal a move for him.

Transfer Tavern take

Colley’s pedigree speaks for itself, with 25 caps to his name for The Gambia and 78 appearances for a prestigious Serie A club in Sampdoria.

Leeds’ interest is, therefore, undoubtedly exciting, but the main stumbling block is whether or not they need to spend money on a new centre-back.

The aforementioned quartet of options currently available to Bielsa are all at a good age, so using the funds on other positions, such as left-back, could be a more shrewd approach.

Wolves fans slam Podence vs Sheff Utd

Many Wolves fans have been fuming over the performance of Daniel Podence despite their 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday night.

Willian Jose grabbed his first league goal for the Midlands club and the only goal of the match after some nice work by Adama Traore on the wing, confirming Blades’ relegation from the top flight with six matches still to play.

Podence did not have his best game in an Old Gold shirt, losing out on 12 of his duels, the most of any player to have set foot on the pitch. He also failed to record a single shot on target, key pass, cross or accurate long ball, all while losing possession on 19 different occasions in the match, the second-most of any of his teammates (Sofascore).

These members of the Molineux faithful slammed his performance on Twitter, with one Wolves supporter even claiming that the Portugal international is a ‘liability’:

Tottenham could lose Foyth

According to a report by AS, as relayed by Sport Witness, La Liga side Villarreal are ‘willing to execute’ the purchase option in Juan Foyth’s loan deal following his performances this season – with all signs now pointing towards a permanent summer exit for the Tottenham youngster.

Foyth’s future not at Tottenham

Foyth has been highly rated by those at Spurs in the past, with manager Jose Mourinho once calling him ‘very solid’ shortly after the manager’s arrival in north London (Evening Standard).

As well as this, ex-Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino was a huge fan – he branded Foyth ‘quality’ during his spell in charge (Sky Sports).

Writing for the Athletic last year, journalist Charlie Eccleshare also dubbed him a ‘very exciting player’ when speaking in a Q&A – but AS report that Villarreal are now ‘willing’ to execute his loan-to-buy option for around €15 million (£13.02m).

As a result, all signs point towards Mourinho losing Foyth permanently as a result – coming after Tottenham supporters long held the belief he could excel as a defensive midfielder for Spurs (football.london).

Transfer Tavern take

Villarreal boss Unai Emery, speaking to the press last month, candidly admitted that if it were up to him, he would sign Foyth on a permanent basis (AS) – and it looks like he is about to get his wish.

Despite fellow youngster Oliver Skipp coming as a sure-fire choice to fight for a defensive midfield role next season, keeping hold of Foyth could have also been a boost for Mourinho.

Playing more regularly recently, he has averaged an impressive 2.5 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game in La Liga – all while completing 88.5% of his passes in that time (WhoScored).

News that Foyth is looking likely to leave on a permanent deal comes as an unlikely potential blow, we believe, as his loan spell has helped him develop into a solid player in the Spanish top flight.

Everton target Soteldo open to transfer

Marcel Brands should avoid launching a summer swoop for Everton to sign Yeferson Soteldo, despite the Venezuelan stating that he’s open to leaving Santos.

What’s the word?

While speaking with FIFA’s official website, Soteldo admitted he dreams of one day playing in the Premier League and that he feels ready to take that step.

Soteldo joined Santos from Chilean side Huachipato in January 2019 and has scored 17 goals while providing 15 assists in 81 appearances across all competitions to date. His performances earned him a new contract at the start of the year, one that runs until December 2023.

Penning a new deal at the Urbano Caldeira Stadium may further drive up President Jose Carlos Peres’ asking price, having valued the diminutive 5 ft 3 star at €35m (£30m) last year following approaches from Inter Milan, Everton and a host of clubs from Spain.

Soteldo has also become a regular in his national side as they strive to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, with 19 outings to his name while still captaining the Venezuela U23s side.

The 23-year-old intends to do all he can to help his country make it to Qatar next year, which would mark the nation’s first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup finals.

“It’s a clear goal and something that’s on my wish list, so I’ll give everything possible to make it happen,” he said. “But I’ve learned not to get obsessed about things, otherwise I’d go crazy and wouldn’t be able to make a career from football.”

A career Soteldo hopes will one day include a spell in England, adding: “Today, I can say that I’m ready to take it to the next level, although I feel good here at Santos. We’ll see after the Copa America. I’ve always liked the English league.”

Should Everton sign Soteldo?

While Santos President Peres claimed Everton were interested in a move for Soteldo, who he lauds for his “sensational skills”, Brands should avoid seeing the winger’s recent declaration as justification to launch a move to sign the dual-footed maestro this summer.

Soteldo may have admirers across the globe but the 23-year-old is yet to offer any real consistency in his output, having been involved in 15 goals (nine scored, six assisted) in his maiden Serie A season before contributing to nine (four scored, five assisted) in 2020.

At 23, Soteldo is also older than what most of Santos’ top prospects traditionally have been when they have sealed moves to Europe, with Neymar joining FC Barcelona at 21 and Rodrygo sealing a €45m (£40m) move to Real Madrid in 2019 at 18 years of age.

Los Blancos were not afraid to get the chequebook out for Rodrygo – a player President Florentino Perez described as “one of the great prodigies” – after he struck nine goals and five assists in 41 Brazilian Serie A games to quickly establish himself as “one of the big emerging stars of Brazilian football”.

And while Rodrygo is now a regular first-team player at the Santiago Bernabeu, there are just as many misses when it comes to expensive South American imports with Gabriel Barbosa starting just one of his 10 appearances for Inter Milan before joining Flamengo.

The Nerazzurri had paid Santos €25m (£21.5m) after Barcelona passed on their first refusal to sign for the forward in 2016, but would only spend one of his three-and-a-half-years as an Inter player actually at the San Siro.

Soteldo’s first two years with Santos are pointing more to him being a second Barbosa than a Rodrygo, which would place the Venezuelan on course to be Everton’s new Yannick Bolasie if ever signed.

The Toffees paid £25m to bring Bolasie to Goodison Park in 2016 after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best on the ball at Crystal Palace.

But the DR Congo international would only offer two goals and four assists in 32 games in royal blue and is now set to leave as a free agent once his £75,000-per-week contract expires in the summer.

Signing Soteldo would, in our opinion, result in a similar outcome.

Man City will dominate if they sign Haaland

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie has tipped Manchester City to go on and dominate if they can manage to acquire Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

Haaland has quickly become one of the best centre-forwards in world football, managing to score over 40 goals for Dortmund and RB Salzburg last season.

His levels have not dropped, with the 20-year-old already past the 30-goal mark in all competitions this term, and he is now being linked with a whole host of top European clubs, including Manchester City.

Premier League rivals Chelsea and Spanish giants Real Madrid are also said to be chasing Haaland’s signature but, according to the MailOnline, it is Pep Guardiola’s side who are leading the race for the Norway International.

If the Citizens manage to get this deal over the line, for Hendrie, it could be game-changing. He told FFC:

“I think he’d be absolutely outrageous at Man City because he plays between the lines of the box, he scores goals and he’s literally ruthless when he’s got a chance. His work ethic is second to none, it really is, and I feel playing in a team of that calibre, with the likes of [Phil] Foden and [Raheem Sterling], the list goes on, I just feel he’ll get so many chances.”

“I feel he’ll do a similar job to what [Sergio] Aguero does if not better because he’s a completely different player to Aguero. But he’s in the box and he likes to score goals and we’ve seen how consistent he’s been. I just feel that he’d certainly fit the bill for Man City for me. I think he’d be an unreal addition to that football squad and I feel they would go on and dominate.”

With Aguero’s contract up in the summer, Manchester City’s interest in Haaland comes as no surprise.

Guardiola may want a replacement and the former Salzburg No.9 would fit the bill perfectly when you look at his goal record. Competition will be fierce but, with their finances and position in European football right now, the Premier League favourites will surely fancy their chances.
