Bell outdoes Stokes in Birmingham win

Ian Bell rarely misses an opportunity to shine when available for his county and his 90 off 65 balls guided Birmingham Bears to a seven-wicket win in their NatWest T20 Blast match at Chester-le-Street. Bell put his poor recent form for England behind him and won the contest with his international colleague Ben Stokes, who scored 40 from 28 balls but then saw three overs disappear for 44.In the windswept battle between the reigning Blast champions and the North Group leaders, Bell gave the Bears the initiative when he drove and pulled successive balls from Stokes for six. That was in the fourth over of their reply to 163 for 7, but they fell behind the rate when Paul Collingwood’s gentle floaters yielded only six runs in his first two overs. Needing 95 off the last 10, William Porterfield stepped on the gas by driving Collingwood over long-on then Bell twice cut Scott Borthwick wide of backward point. There was no let-up and when Stokes returned for the 16th over, as Bell straight drove two fours and guided two more to third man either side of a high full toss. Stokes had already had one warning for a full toss above waist height but this was deemed a slower ball and he was allowed to complete the over, which cost 21.Bell departed in the next over when he hit a short ball from John Hastings to mid-off, but the stand of 96 had left only 16 needed off three overs. Laurie Evans fell lbw to an Usman Arshad yorker, but Porterfield’s unbeaten 41 completed the task with five balls to spare.Durham were put in and had made only 6 when Phil Mustard fell in the third over, tamely pulling Oliver Hannon-Dalby to midwicket.Calum MacLeod survived a leading edge straight back to Recordo Gordon on nine to make 41 off 27 balls. The acceleration began when Boyd Rankin came on for the sixth over. Two of Rankin’s first three balls were short enough for Mark Stoneman to pull and, although he top-edged them, both flew high to fine leg, for four and six. MacLeod also cut a four as the over cost 15.But Stoneman departed for 18, lbw to a yorker from Gordon to bring in Stokes, who pulled the offspin of Ateeq Javid for six two overs later. With Jeetan Patel at the other end, both batsmen proved very adept at finding the gap between long-on and deep mid-wicket as the total reached 82 at the halfway point. But the momentum stalled as MacLeod drove Javid to long-on then Collingwood was run out for 4, sent back at the non-striker’s end and beaten by Porterfield’s direct hit from backward point.Stokes gave himself room to swing through a leg-stump ball from Rankin and hit it for a straight six, but the Bears’ gamble in leaving Javid on paid dividends when he had Stokes lbw for 40 attempting a reverse sweep.Hannon-Dalby came back for the 18th over in preference to Rikki Clarke and his first ball was driven for a straight six by Hastings as 14 came off the over. Hastings made 21 off 12 balls before driving to extra cover in the final over then Gordon Muchall straight-drove his only boundary in an unbeaten 30 off 20 balls.

Mashrafe hopes to ride on ODI form

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza hopes that their ODI form can rub off on the solitary T20 against Pakistan on Friday

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur23-Apr-2015Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza hopes that their ODI form can rub off on the solitary T20 against Pakistan on Friday. However, Bangladesh are still some way away from becoming a highly-regarded T20 side, which Mashrafe feels Pakistan are.Bangladesh’s eleven wins in this format have been spread over nine years. Although they qualified for the main competition of the World T20 last year, they were humiliated by Hong Kong in the qualifying stage and lost all their matches in the main round. Their only match in the format since the World T20 last year was washed out, while the BCB last hosted a domestic T20 tournament in December 2013.Mashrafe said that Bangladesh’s lack of experience in T20s is a major hindrance. He said that they lacked a big hitter down the order while Shakib Al Hasan, inarguably Bangladesh’s most sought-after T20 player, needs helping hands in the bowling department.”We can hope for a win tomorrow especially seeing how our batsmen and bowlers are doing their job,” Mashrafe said. “But if we are looking to raise a genuine T20 team, we have to get rid of our shortcomings. We need an extraordinary hitter at No 7 or 8. We need more good bowlers to work along with Shakib.”T20 has always been difficult for us. We don’t play enough except Shakib. Still we are very confident because the boys are in good touch. We haven’t played many matches, neither have we won many against top sides. But I still feel we are equals. If we play like we did in the ODI series, we can win the game.”Mashrafe said that Bangladesh are unable to produce good T20 players because four-day and one-day cricket are given more emphasis in the domestic arena. He said that talent alone is giving him the confidence that they can beat Pakistan on Friday.”Skill is not a problem because everyone tries to play their natural game. The problem is that we hardly play T20s even at domestic level. We mostly play four-day or one-day cricket, so there is lack of practice. You cannot prepare for T20s as well as you do for Tests and ODIs. We don’t have those extraordinary T20 specialists.”Many of our players like to play shots while we have bowlers like Rubel (Hossain) and Taskin (Ahmed). But we have to rest Rubel for the Test series. If we play more T20s, we can be a better team. We have the ability. At the moment we haven’t reached a higher level.”Mashrafe said that Sabbir Rahman is possibly the best hitter in their current line-up while the best batsmen of the ODI series, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Soumya Sarkar will be handy in T20s.”Sabbir is a good striker of the ball. Soumya, Tamim and Mushfiqur, despite his size, can play shots. Shakib is there. The problem is that in ODIs and Tests you have time to get set. You can’t take more than five-six balls to get set (in T20).”Lack of match practice is a huge factor. Experience in this format matters. If everyone can play their natural game, we will have a chance. The top four has to do well, at least one of them, if you look at the format’s structure.”Mashrafe said that he wants to use only six batsmen. Anything extra is a negative move, he felt. He has placed a lot of trust instead on the fast bowlers, who he thinks will be able to make the difference.”All T20 teams have six batsmen, but playing eight batsmen is quite a negative move. T20 is also a bowler’s game, since they hold the key to winning matches. I don’t think we need a spare batsman. But it all depends on our confidence and performers. Playing three pace bowlers is the right decision. We have to keep believing in them.”Mashrafe agreed that Bangladesh remain some way behind Pakistan in T20s. But he is still counting on his form batsmen and bowlers to pull the rug from below the visitors, who have lost a tour match and all three ODIs.”Shahid Afridi was right [in saying they are a stronger T20 side]. They are playing T20s for a long time, some like Afridi and (Sohail) Tanvir have played in excess of 100 T20s. It would be great if we can perform in the field, and beat their experience.”

SL thrash Afghanistan by 68 runs to take gold

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDespite being dismissed for 133, Sri Lanka fought back and routed Afghanistan by 68 runs to take the gold medal at the Asian Games in Incheon. After Lahiru Thirimanne’s fifty steered the innings, Sri Lanka’s bowlers made sure the Afghanistan batsmen never got comfortable in the chase and eventually dismissed them for 65.Opting to bat, Sri Lanka were set for a big score and had reached 78 for 1 after 10 overs. But Afghanistan removed both set batsmen – Dinesh Chandimal for 33 and Thirimanne for 57 – and did not let any partnership flourish thereon. Not a single boundary was struck after Thirimanne’s dismissal and Afghanistan collected the last seven wickets for only 33 runs, bowling Sri Lanka out with five balls to spare. Mohammad Nabi led the way for his bowlers, contributing with 4 for 18.Afghanistan had a good chance of beating Sri Lanka but failed to get going in the chase. Isuru Udana struck twice in the fourth over and Chaturanga de Silva struck in the next to leave the score at 20 for 3. The other bowlers also closed in on the batsmen, all of them picking at least one wicket. The score soon became 36 for 5 and the remaining five wickets managed to put together 29 more runs. Only three Afghanistan batsmen reached double figures as the team settled for a silver medal. In the third-place playoff, Bangladesh beat Hong Kong by 27 runs after scoring 162 for 6. Shakib Al Hasan’s 46 and Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 21-ball 35 set up a challenging score for Hong Kong, who managed 135 for 7 on the back of top-scorer Mark Chapman’s 38. Two of Hong Kong’s top four batsmen fell for ducks which threw them off track early in the chase and Arafat Sunny picked up three wickets for 22 runs to help them win the bronze medal.

Shahzad, Siddle crumble Northants

ScorecardRiki Wessels blazed 158 to begin Notts perfect day•Getty Images

Northamptonshire’s first taste of Division One cricket in a decade is rapidly turning sour. Given 76 overs in which to secure a draw in a badly rain-affected match, they instead crashed to 151 all out in 49.2 overs, a third defeat in four following last season’s euphoric campaign, when they combined promotion with victory in the Friends Life t20.Peter Siddle, the Australian fast bowler, took 4 for 61 and Ajmal Shahzad 4 for 46 as Nottinghamshire picked up their second win of the season to climb to fourth in the early table.Effectively half of the first three days had been lost to the weather and Nottinghamshire began the final day only 11 runs ahead at 259 for 5 in their first innings but a whirlwind 158 off 152 balls by Riki Wessels allowed them to declare with full batting points, a lead of 161 and two sessions plus 30 minutes in which to test Northamptonshire’s resolve. The visitors failed miserably and David Ripley, Northamptonshire’s director of cricket, was left to reflect that his side must learn lessons quickly to bridge the gap between the divisions.”We dominated with the bat at times last year and we’ve now got to earn the right to do that,” he said. “We need to invest more time in getting in because 30s and 40s are not going to win you matches. In the second innings today, there were a lot of batsmen who got starts but we never built any partnerships.”There is a gap in quality. There are sides, like Nottinghamshire, Sussex, Durham and Somerset who have cemented their position in the first division and the challenge for us is to become one of those sides because we want to be playing against these kind of opponents every week.”The big difference is in the back-up seamers. As one quality bowler comes off another one comes on, and you don’t get many overs off. That’s something we have to try to adjust to but we have to do it a bit quicker because we are four games in now.”But I think we have enough quality to compete in this division and we’re just not able to show it at the moment. In this match we have had our moments but have not been able to capitalise as Notts did. They got a foothold in the game today and ruthlessly hammered home their advantage.”Their foothold came from Wessels, 78 overnight – having been dropped, to Northamptonshire’s lasting regret, on just 22 – and it was after completing a 124-ball hundred that he really opened up, blasting his next 50 runs off just 20 deliveries. He had spectators in the Fox Road stand ducking for cover with a series of meaty leg-side blows, including one run of five sixes in the space of seven balls faced from the Pavilion End, four in five balls off Hall and one off Mohammad Azharullah, before showing he could also clear the longer boundary with a clip over midwicket for his eighth maximum when Maurice Chambers came on at the Radcliffe Road end.Ajmal Shahzad aided the cause with 36 off 25 balls and the two added 107 in just 51 deliveries before Wessels at last found a fielder, at wide long-on, prompting the declaration.Northamptonshire reached lunch only one down but after Stephen Peters, the captain and their best hope of plotting a path to survival, fell into a trap set by Siddle and flicked a ball off his legs straight to Andre Adams at short square leg, the innings followed a depressingly familiar pattern. Two more wickets in Siddle’s spell reduced them to 62 for 4. Adams held a return catch off a leading edge to remove Rob Newton, Siddle caught Ben Duckett, also off his own bowling, before Shahzad removed Hall – the man who had let Wessels off the hook at first slip on Tuesday – via a catch at the wicket as the South African followed one that swung away.Shahzad matched Siddle in claiming four wickets in the innings, taking out David Murphy’s middle stump and trapping Maurice Chambers in front, either side of another caught and bowled, popped back by Steven Crook to Samit Patel off a full toss.Things can only get better, Northamptonshire will hope. The start of the new NatWest T20 will be seen as a chance to rekindle form. Ian Butler, the New Zealand seamer who signed after three previous deals for overseas players fell through, will make his county debut in their T20 opener against Yorkshire at Headingley and face Middlesex in the Championship at Wantage Road on Sunday.

'Wasn't expecting such a big amount' – Karthik

Dinesh Karthik, who was the second-biggest buy in the IPL auction, said he was not expecting to attract such a big bid

Vishal Dikshit12-Feb-2014

After a prolific season with Mumbai Indians last year, Dinesh Karthik is back with Delhi Daredevils•BCCI

When his name went under the hammer for the IPL auction, Dinesh Karthik was sitting a few kilometers away, in the dressing room at the Chinnaswamy stadium, feeling disappointed with himself. He had just played on to a delivery from Vinay Kumar and walked back for 27, following a first-innings score of 91 in the Irani Cup match against Karnataka. His Rest of India team were on their way to a heavy defeat.Minutes later, someone in the dressing room yelled out that Karthik had been sold for Rs. 12.50 crore ($2.08 million) to Delhi Daredevils.”Somebody in the dressing room was just screaming that I went for such a price so that’s how I heard,” Karthik told ESPNcricinfo. “Very happy, definitely very happy and I wasn’t expecting such a big amount. Actually, I came to know a bit later as we didn’t have access to television in the dressing room.”Karthik attracted the second-highest bid on the first day of the auction, behind Yuvraj Singh’s Rs 14 crore ($2.33 million) bid from Royal Challengers Bangalore. Last year, playing for the victorious Mumbai Indians, Karthik amassed 510 runs with two fifties at a strike-rate of 124.08 and featured in all the 19 matches Mumbai played. Kings XI Punjab had bought him in the 2011 auction for $900,000, and he had moved to Mumbai in a pre-auction transfer in 2012, in exchange for Rajagopal Sathish, for an undisclosed sum. Now, Karthik is back in Delhi, for whom he had played for the first three seasons, but as part of a completely new Daredevils squad that features another marquee player, Kevin Pietersen.”I’m happy I’m back in Delhi but definitely I had a great time in Mumbai,” Karthik said. “I’ll miss the franchise, I had a great time there.”I think it will be wonderful. He [Pietersen] is a legend so it’s going to be great to share the dressing room with him and he’ll have a lot of things and inputs to say and It’ll be great to play with him.”Even though Karthik will be pleased with the big contract, not being part of India’s World T20 squad will have been a letdown, especially since he had been named among the 30 probables. But Karthik said he would continue to try and do well in whatever matches he plays.”I think I just missed the bus so there’s nothing else to it,” he said. “I just need to perform better and get back to the team. If I do well in IPL, it will be a good thing to happen. At the same time it’s important I score runs even in domestic cricket and everywhere else I play. I’ve got a few matches to come now and I’ll try and do the best in those series and take it from there.”

Desgaste?
