SPFL: Celtic predicted XI vs Livingston

Celtic return to domestic action this weekend with a few scars after a dramatic night for the Hoops in Europe a few days ago.

The Bhoys were exceptional in the final third as they scored three times against one of the most dominant teams in La Liga on Thursday night. However, the opposition’s quality against Celtic eventually told when Real Betis won the game 4-3.

Ange Postecoglou’s side travelled to Spain with an injury-hit squad but the Australian should have a few faces back when they face Livingston on Sunday afternoon.

It’s a game they should be winning but how will they line up? Here’s what we’re predicting…

We are tipping Celtic to make three changes from the side which lost to Betis in the Europa League.

The first change is on the flanks, where Liel Abada comes back into the team at the expense of Adam Montgomery.

Abada missed the clash in Seville due to religious reasons but is all set to play this weekend and should take the Scottish teenager’s place in the team.

A further alteration is in the middle of the park where Postecoglou is optimistic about Callum McGregor’s chances of returning.

He didn’t play on Thursday night because of a small knock but the £20k-per-week earner has now seemingly recovered and should come in for Ismaila Soro.

The Ivorian was withdrawn early last time out after a number of tackles saw him fortunate not to be red-carded. Therefore, McGregor’s return should be a welcome boost.

The final change is in defence, where Carl Starfelt is axed after an increasing number of dodgy performances. Stephen Welsh returns to partner Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Postecoglou is likely to resist the temptation of moving Josip Juranovic to his favoured role at right-back.

Anthony Ralston did score against Betis but was woeful from a defensive point of view. However, he should have an easier ride against Livingston, and after his impressive start to the season, he plays again.

Albian Ajeti keeps his place in attack with Kyogo Furuhashi still ruled out through injury. The Swiss striker has been in good form, with three goals in his last two outings.

Sheff Wed fans hail Bailey Peacock-Farrell

A number of Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been hailing goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, following his penalty save for Northern Ireland.

The Owls have made a positive start to their League One campaign, even though losing away to Morecambe last weekend was disappointing.

There has been much to admire about Darren Moore’s side and Peacock-Farrell has undoubtedly been one of the brightest additions to the squad.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

He arrived on loan from Burnley during the summer transfer window and immediately impressed, making one spectacular penalty save in the win at Rotherham United.

It appears as though Peacock-Farrell is equally influential at international level, however, with the 24-year-old also keeping out a spot-kick in Northern Ireland’s 4-1 win away to Lithuania on Thursday night.

Charlie Patino: Arsenal’s next Smith Rowe?

Arsenal’s huge investment into revolutionalising their Hale End academy set-up is starting to pay serious dividends and for many of their up-and-coming prospects, the pathway into the first-team has never been better.

And that’s because manager Mikel Arteta dishes out regular opportunities to those that impress him in the youth system.

For a long time, the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere were the only success stories from within but under the Spaniard, who has even donned the Gunners shirt himself, we’re seeing more and more homegrown players make the cut.

Both Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe are now a crucial part of Arteta’s senior squad – but who is likely to follow in their footsteps? We’ve seen plenty of names be given game time throughout pre-season thus far, including Jack Henry-Francis and Omari Hutchinson.

However, Arsenal may have their next Smith Rowe already lying in wait.

“Of all the years I’ve been scouting, he’s the best kid I’ve ever seen,” is how Gunners talent-spotter Brian Stapleton describes 17-year-old gem Charlie Patino to Goal.com.

He has now been tipped to become the ‘next Phil Foden’, a player that Arteta had a big influence on during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

Despite not turning 18 until September, Patino is expected to play a major role for Arsenal’s U23 side as a left-footed midfielder primarily operating as a no.8.

Although, his future could lie in that advanced midfield role, according to Nick Ames in the Guardian.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-arsenal-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Arsenal news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

It’s also believed that there is a plan in place for him to become part of the senior set-up in due course, rather than sending him out on loan, which only speaks volumes on his ability and potentially how highly Arteta rates him.

“It was clear Charlie was a special talent,” claimed former head of recruitment Steve Morrow.

Patino even cites Arteta as a player he looked up to as a child, alongside fellow Spaniards Santi Cazorla and the aforementioned Fabregas.

“Sean O’Connor discovered Jack Wilshere and he said to me that Charlie is the best player who has ever walked through the doors at Hale End,” added Stapleton. “The kid has got so much potential, but he’s not there yet.”

We’ve seen how quickly someone like Smith Rowe has established himself in North London. He was only on loan to Championship outfit Huddersfield Town in 2020 and now he’s donning the famous no.10 shirt, having signed a five-year contract extension.

Patino certainly looks like he could be the next big thing to emerge from the impressive Hale End academy. The 17-year-old can make great strides this season.

Umpire Benson calls for HotSpot in review system

Mark Benson feels the review system could be improved with the use of HotSpot © AFP

The review of umpiring decisions, being trialled in the series, has already generated a lot of attention and did so again on Saturday, when a confident appeal by India for an lbw against Thilan Samaraweera was turned down initially by the on-field umpire and then on review.Samaraweera was struck on the pad by a ball from Anil Kumble but it appeared as if he might have got an inside edge. However, replays showed ball hitting pad before bat, and it appeared as though the ball would have gone on to hit the middle stump three-fourths of the way up. The decision, though, was upheld and Samaraweera, then on 5, went on to score 35.Mark Benson was the on-field umpire involved in that decision, and he admitted it had been a hard day at work. “It has been a tough day for the umpires; there have been three decisions overturned but in the end of the day the correct decision has been made and we have to live with it,” he told broadcaster Ten Sports after the day’s play. “It’s not easy with all these bat-pads and these mystery spinners (read Ajantha Mendis). It’s a trial and the review system has got to be for the obvious mistakes. It can only be for good if we get rid of the obvious mistake”There were seven review calls made by both teams on Saturday. Benson and Rudi Koertzen were the two on-field umpires, with Billy Doctrove standing as the third umpire. Benson had a few suggestions for improving the system.”The review system needs to get the HotSpot in,” he said. Benson also said perhaps the review should check if the entire ball pitched outside the line of leg stump in case of leg-before decisions, instead of looking at percentages. Currently, the rule states that more than 50% of the ball must pitch in line with the leg stump, whereas for the impact of the ball on pad, as long as a part of the ball is in line with the stumps the batsman can be given out.The present review system uses the Virtual Eye technology, which maps where the ball pitched and the point where it hit the pad, and predicts where the ball will hit the stumps (though this is not available to the third umpire due to doubts over its accuracy). However, the system produced a gaffe when it failed to detect a deflection from Virender Sehwag’s front pad onto the back pad in India’s second innings at the SSC, and showed the impact of the ball in line with where it hit the back pad, but at a distance from the stumps where his front pad was. Third umpire Rudi Koertzen too failed to point out the glaring error to the on-field umpire.Sri Lanka have had the better of the review system so far in the series, with captain Mahela Jayawardene particularly making some superb calls in the field on the first day of the Test, with lbw shouts against Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir, initially given not-out by the on-field umpire, were upheld on review. Trevor Bayliss, the Sri Lanka coach, was for the system. “We’ve had a number decisions turned around in our favour. The other way of looking at it is sitting here and complaining about seven or eight wrong ones,” he said on Saturday. “In fact we had those turned around. I think it’s doing its job. There are one or two areas that have to be cleaned up a little bit. But from our point of view we are reasonably happy the way it has gone.”Bayliss felt the review system would balance the contest between bat and ball. “Everyone says the game is a batsman’s game. I think the review system might be a little bit of a comeback for the bowlers. There will be more outs than not outs. All the bowlers should be pretty happy that the review system is in place.”

Wolves eye Khvicha Kvaratskhelia swoop

If you consider the huge amount of spending Wolves undertook last summer, this year has been relatively quiet in comparison.

The Old Gold have kept hold of their best players and added Trincao to their ranks, a player who should earn the admiration of supporters quite quickly.

What’s the word?

Another player who could catch the imagination quickly is Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

According to his agent, Mamuka Jugheli, Wolves are one of a number of teams interested in securing his services before the window shuts at the end of the month.

Speaking to Sportall, he said: “Khvicha is wanted by almost every team in the English Premier League, for example, Everton, Brighton and Wolves, but one thing is interest and the other is a real offer.

“Apart from Inter from Italy, Kvaratskhelia is also wanted by Juventus. There’s the interest of Atalanta, Napoli and Lazio. The initiative is shown by at least five clubs of the German Bundesliga.”

The Rubin Kazan winger is valued at £16.2m via Transfermarkt.

The next Traore

Kvaratskhelia may not be a household name but he looks like an exceptional player, someone who could take the Premier League by storm with his remarkable trickery and dribbling.

He only found the net on four occasions last term but was incredibly creative, providing his teammates with eight assists in the Russian top-flight.

Furthermore, no player in the entire division completed more successful dribbles than the 20-year-old last season.

The Georgia international managed a whopping 78 at a rate of 3.4 per game. That tally is even better in World Cup qualifying with Kvaratskhelia managing five dribbles per match.

Described as a player with “crazy technique” by Russian coach Denis Bushuev, he also compared the youngster to two of the trickiest wingers we’ve seen in recent history.

“He is from the same constellation of players as Ribery or Robben,” Bushuev admitted.

On that evidence, it’s clear to see who he’s most comparable to at Wolves; Adama Traore.

Like the Rubin Kazan attacker, the Spaniard is an incredible dribbler who is capable of taking down even the sternest of defences.

In 2020/21, no player in the Premier League made more dribbles than Traore who registered a jaw-dropping 153 at 4.1 per outing.

Capable of playing on the left, Kvaratskhelia would provide Pedro Neto with some reliable competition. Combine that with his incredible ball skills and you’d have a fine signing.
